Welcome to Las Vegas By Bill Schafer Las Vegas Gay Guide Publisher The face of Las Vegas dining has been changing for some time now and casino buffets have changed dramatically. No longer is the $2.95 buffet king. Las Vegas visitors are seeking – and finding – a higher quality dining experience. With prices ranging to $85 per person, our visitors are experiencing a level of excellence never before found in the gaming capitol. With offerings as exceptional as game, pâtés, lobster, crab and sweet and savory crêpes the casinos are enticing diners to their tables. Some buffets

are even offering quality beer and wine for the price. And brunches are offering better quality sparkling wines and Champagne – no longer the $3 bottles of yesterday. But the casinos are offering a full range of buffets – something to fit every budget and level of quality expected by our guests. In this issue we’re exploring the “premium” buffets and Sunday brunches. If you’re in the market for something less exotic, those buffets are certainly available, too. We hope you enjoy our buffets while visiting Las Vegas and we know, after exploring all our city has to offer, you’ll be back repeatedly. On page 12 of this issue you’ll find a map of the Arts District. This is a downtown area of Las

Vegas which has exploded with activity in the past couple of years. In this urban environment you’ll find galleries and antique shops, thrift stores and furniture vendors, bars and restaurants. A major event in the Arts District is First Friday. This street fair attracts thousands of pedestrians on the first Friday of each month. If you’re visiting early in the month, you’ll want to put this on your gay agenda. The event now encompasses more than 20 city blocks with five blocks closed to vehicular traffic to create a pedestrian area for the outdoor festivities. While in Las Vegas have fun, drink responsibly, gamble intelligently and play safely.

The Buffet at Aria: all-you-can-eat gourmet; panoramic view of pool deck While visiting The Buffet at ARIA, located on the Promenade Level near the skylight sculpture by Antony Gormley, guests encounter another contemporary spin on a standard – all-you-can-eat gourmet food. The delectable array of beef, game, fresh seafood, vegetables and fruit, along with French desserts from the pâtisserie of world-renowned Pastry Chef Jean-Philippe Maury, unequivocally rewrites the definition of the Las Vegas buffet. In tandem with the food, the décor by Lewis.Tsurumaki.Lewis Architects transforms typical cafeteria-drab into a 25,000-square-foot haven flooded with natural light from panoramic windows that overlook ARIA’s pool deck. A cloud-like ceiling of undulating fabric aligns itself along a series of bamboo-clad booths, simultaneously creating intimate dining shelters and maximizing the amplitude of both space and spectacular views. A glass-tiled wall wraps around from the venue’s exterior to frame the gourmet presentations at the buffet.
