Wes ield, LLC partnered with the World Trade Center Development and the oﬃces of San ago Calatrava to design the interior retail spaces located in the Transporta on Hub - Calatrava’s Oculus. Wes ield purchased retail square footage and will be leasing spaces to tenants such Coach, Victoria’s Secret and Banana Republic. Grand opening expected in 2015. Working as a part of the Wes ield Tenant Coordina on Department and Design Team, I was responsible for assis ng the Na onal Director of Development with design presenta ons and proposed storefronts. Design presenta ons were made to Senior Management Team, both in the design and leasing department at the U.S. corporate oﬃce located in Los Angeles. My par cipa on as a Designer included research for inspira onal storefront concepts, signage exposure and overall design possibili es that integrate with the “wings” of the Calatrava hub design; as part of the team, I worked in organizing design presenta ons boards, 3-Dimensional models and design concepts for storefronts. Metreon Shopping Center Wes ield, LLC San Francisco, CA
Located in the heart of San Francisco oďŹ€ 4th Street, the Metreon Shopping Center is Wes ieldâ€™s new Northwest construc on project. To contrast the tradi onal San Francisco Center just down the street, Metreon takes a more modern approach with a full height glass facade surrounding the park. The concept incorporated in the common area space and food court is to generate open spaces that unite the public for meals and social events. Coordina ng daily with the Wes ield leasing agent, I worked in providing tenants with the op mal space for their business; reconfiguring layouts and storefronts, material selec on and design presenta ons. My weekly responsibili es included managing and upda ng Wes ieldâ€™s Development Plans, Merchandising Plans, Expira on Plans and Lease Plans for Metreon as well as all other Northwest malls. Dave Residence Michael Marquez Architects, Inc. Beverly Hills, CA Taking full advantage of the breathtaking 270 degree view of Los Angeles, this brand new custom home loves to entertain while s ll providing privacy. The nucleus houses the common areas, allowing the bedrooms to emancipate and expand to the corners of the lot. By pivo ng the floor plan, we create separa on and in macy in a home composed mainly of glass. The massing elements of the house are the main features of the architectural composi on. These same elements are reintroduced throughout the house in other key design components, such as the kitchen island, the master bedroom fireplace and the floa ng bathtub in the master bathroom. The result is an edgy modern home that allows for the open floor plan to be indica ve of comfortable yet fully entertainment-driven residence. My role of Project Manager included mee ng and coordina ng with client and subcontractors; preparing client and Architectural Review Board presenta ons; submi ng and reviewing Building Department drawings; genera ng and overseeing construc on documents; answering RFIâ€™s; and performing construc on administra on. In the 1GA studio I explored the possibility of creating a project that consisted of mul ple greenhouses supplying vegetables and spices to the restaurant inside. The idea was that everything on the menu was grown on site, not only serving fresh produce to the customers, but also to those in the urban surroundings. The program for 1GB studio was a library that houses graphic novels. In my design, I incorporated the park located on the site as a fundamental part of the overall design. Our ac ons have immediate and precise reac ons and architecture is no diﬀerent; as I move through my architectural educa on and consequently through my career, I aspire to produce well-planned architecture that extends the rela onship between building and landscape. That means to minimize the damage involved in construc ng a project as well as exploring possibili es of sustainability. I believe there are many sustainable op ons emerging in architecture, but surely not enough. Also, many architects today are either unaware of the possible design ideas or simply chose not to take them into considera on. I plan on pushing the envelope on what exists today as well as exploring sustainability that is yet to be discovered.

Graphic Novel Library New York City, NY
Taking advantage of the fun, jovial and dynamic no ons associated with graphics novels, my goal was to stay close to the cartoon-like feel and represent it as a dynamic and engaging building. Previous architects have explored the idea of architecture as a comic strip, but I wanted to further that no on and create a project that spa alized the graphic novel taking it from two dimensions into three. The result was a dialogue between an explosive form and tradi onal geometry that speak to each other in opposi on. The Cartesian form that houses the imagery in graphics becomes the stage for my administra on building. The explosive form that wraps the text in novels is now translated as the main floor plate. It is then shi ed and rotated in order to generate the volume that holds the library, stacks and archive. Por ons of the spikes are made of glass allowing for the guest to get a peek of the exterior while moving through the space. By eleva ng a por on of the building, the grass is free to flow underneath, leaving most of the site unscathed. The landscape follows a moirĂŠ pa ern that emulates the s pples of the graphic novel and serves as a play zone for those outside the library. The pa ern then con nues in the form of a mesh on the exterior of my administra on building crea ng an image on the faĂ§ade of the building as the entrance to the library.
This is intended to be a fun, dynamic building that allows people to gather outside or enjoy exploring the world of graphic novels. Coincidently, a project designed in NYC a year later won a Young Architectâ€™s Award for a design that strangely resembled my first year graphic novel project. Hmm...

Concert Hall Miami, Fl The juxtaposi on of tension and compression both ver cally and horizontally is explored within this project. The program called for three theaters ranging from 400 people to 2,000 people sea ng. The three theaters, each with an independent type, are stacked vercally and open in opposi on from one another. The floor plates then grow from within, causing the external envelope to stretch to its extreme. This is translated into the interior via a so plas c skin that engulfs the main circula on. Although its surroundings are seemingly unrestricted, the program within follows strict guidelines similar to that of a machine-like form. The material explora on was a main driver in the project, allowing for explora on of tex le and plas c materials. The project was selected as one of the most recognized in the class and therefore developed into Design Development drawings in the following semesterâ€™s DD class. In this project, I partnered with classmate Paige Chambers, working closely from design concept to execu on. Together we explored materials and its opposi on to the rigid interior. Execu on was divided for eďŹƒciency and learning purposes. She was mainly responsible for floor plans while my focus was on sec ons drawings and their respec ve renders.

Mul -Family Housing Chicago, Il
World popula on is expected to reach ten (10) billion by the year 2050. Designing eﬃcient mul -family housing to accommodate the popula on growth is crucial to the success of architecture and urban planning. Located just east of Millenium Park, the project focuses on maximizing space efficiently by interlocking apartment units. I generated a “B-B-A-C-A-B-B” pa ern that allows for pa ern repe on and the possibility of modular architecture that can expand based on the availability of space and number of units needed. The units range from 600 sf for a single to 1,200 sf for a two bedroom. The variaon in sizes caters to a demographic that ranges from individuals to families. The concept plays on the no on that structural members are usually seen as rigid and Cartesian while the architecture is normally the free form. Here that process is reversed, having the apartment units remain rectangular while the steel structure shines as the curvilinear and flowing forms. These are intended to serve as support as well as a playground for children to climb and explore. The project focused heavily on research and zoning codes for mul -family development. This allowed for addi onal knowledge on city requirements for common areas, unit sizes, aﬀordable units among other planning and zoning codes for housing development projects.

U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon Compe on Irvine, CA SCI-Arc and Caltech partnered to compete as one of the twenty (20) selected schools in the U.S. Department of Energy sponsored Solar Decathlon. Together, we designed and physically built a one-of-its-kind, solar-powered net-zero home that will enable residents to change the configura on of their living environment based on preferences, presen ng homeowners with a house uniquely suited for their needs. The project D.A.L.E. (Dynamic Augmented Living Environment) proposes a completely new approach to sustainability and includes many other engineering and design breakthroughs that ensure its energy usage is op mized. At 600 square feet, DALE is a micro house with an unprecedented flexible interior allowing it to transform into a home three mes its size, demonstra ng not only size variability, but also breakthrough advances in programma c flexibility. Its two independent modules sit on a rail system that provides the op on to expand and contract the home in order to react to climate changes, as well as take into account lifestyle needs. When the modules are spaced apart, a mid- yard is created that expands the living space and allows occupants to take advantage of California’s sublime climate. DALE’s sliding overhangs are covered in a PV array and allow for addi onal configura ons providing shading and privacy where needed. When an expansive living space is not needed, or when the night climate becomes cold, DALE’s modules come together, seal and require minimal energy to power the home, maximizing eﬃciency with a small footprint. The home also produces more energy than it consumes, so that it can exist oﬀ the grid. In addi on to being a part of the interior team designing the kitchen, I was assigned the Public Rela ons Manager on the project. My role includes organizing and managing media events, cul va ng rela onships with magazine and newspaper editors, presenta ons, sponsorship and fundraising. Communica ons is one of the ten contests in the Decathlon with the main purpose of educa ng and promo ng solar energy. Sharing the informa on about sustainable building is crucial to the compe on as well as to the future of building.
