THE MOVEMENT OF A NARRATIVE BETWEEN ARCHITECTURE AND FILM

Provided with a site in the historic district of Cincinnati, we were to develop a proposal for a new film institute. I devised a concept with the two undulating roofs which are meant to create a narration of film; the narration between protagonist and antagonist. I also wanted to manipulate daylighting strategies by using a skylight anad atrium while also paying respect to the historic nature of OTR with a brick facade.

We were challenged to develop our drawing techniques and design through the use of plans and sections. This became an excercise of light and spacial values and how those begin to form a relationship.

DAAP / STUDIO / SPRING 2016 THE LACK OF GOOD SENSE; FOOLISHNESS

013

NLP

A collaborative project within studios to design, develop, and construct a structure that was free of program but still prompted human interaction. Our design was meant to engage with nearby constructions on the site. We added rope between boards to create a texture that prompts the act of sitting to create a moment of rest in our design.

Given the challenge of a narrow site, we were to develop lighting strategies that would bring natural light down into the building. I also wanted to challenge the idea of garden as entry and so I created a large garden that runs through the length of my building. I wanted to force those that enter the house to interact with the garden and to continue to interact with the garden as you move through it. I used a skylight to bring light down into the garden through the use of an atrium, which also allows you to see down into the garden, regardless of where you are in the house.

THE SCIENCE OR ART OF CONSTRUCTION

Tectonics is the ar t of construction and how it can be used as a basis for design. I began by looking at how columns and beams come together and what that joint then means to architecture. I developed a motif that can be see throughout my tectonic system. These joints also begin to create por tals of space as you move through the promenade that was developed by my tectonic system.

As we progressed in developing our tectonic systems, we were then challenged to develop these into an enclosed space that still spoke to the languages of our tectonic systems. My program was to develop a visitor center for Trammel Fossil Park, located in Sharonville, Ohio. I understood that learning about this site and the fossils found on it as being the most impor tant aspect of this project. I wanted to create a gallery in the visitor center that allowed you to look out over the hillside as you were learning about it.

My primary repsonsibilities during my internship with SCB in San Francisco were documenting the individual unit elevations and plans, vertical circulation, conducting light studies, while also cleaning up the Revit model. I was also responsible for curating presentation documents and boards for different community hearing meetings with the City of Oakland, which is located in Northern California. I also would retouch renderings as needed and was responsible for creating schedules for doors, parking spaces, and typical units in the project.
