Developed at the center of the school. the library contains loud and quiet spaces depending on the interaction with the multipurpose room. The MPR is accessed from any part of the school and is directly connected to the library. In order to provide the desired quiet paces, the library’s reading and learning area are placed in the two edges of the north-south bars providing separation and views.

Program was placed on both levels but both had direct access to the playground areas. While all were connected to the play areas, the circulation paths were designed to allow for assembly. The paths have seating and gathering spaces that fold from the project’s boundaries. The path gathering areas are shaded as they are located on the north facades. Which also helps the classrooms to receive the maximum amount of natural light.

De-Constructed Education

2

Egalitarian awakening occurs in 2058, a post havoc period where People have learned to adapt to lack of fundamental resources and exchange goods and other forms of man-made energy in a trade system [Group city of the future concept]. Education becomes a product that is traded and thus, a new approach must be taken. As education is gained in movement, the new program dictates how the structure is deconstructed. The facade is transformed and the enclosed cells now offer open collaboration opportunities. Large spaces are carved for trade markets, and the school is reconnected to the city’s transit system.

Egalitarian awakening takes place in 75 years. In this future city growth is driven by need and the development of new system is interdependent and incremental. Systems are informed by natural structures and opportunistic adaptation. This project focuses on education and how it will be taught in the future. No longer are students seated in a top-down classroom. The learning experience is informed from the brain’s neuron system and multiple connections are created. Knowledge is acquired in transition; as these paths are formed existing cells are fragmented and new opportunities emerge. A new interdependent school subversively develops from the confined jail.

Enclosed : Exposed Breaking through the jail walls was informed by three dichotomies Separated : Connected Rigid : Fluid Enclosed : Exposed

The neurons in the brain contain a core and several connection device which link to other neurons. In this manner the brain develops. The neuron structure is developed into the sectional qualities of the deconstructed space. Horizontal and vertical connections are created to attract public transportation as well as pedestrians into the project; access is provided from the LA River and the adjacent streets. The core is then dedicated to the education and living. These programs are separated but visually visible to the public to support the idea of access and opportunity. This project is a prototype system for a network of school with the same philosophy. As need arises abandoned structures develop into a opportunistic schools.

Levels of privacy were explored to allow each unit a private exterior space facing the courtyard as well as shared residence space at the central courtyard. While the façade was defined by a continues plane redefine in order to increase the communal idea. Each unit is therefore not articulated separately, but it is part of a whole. In contrast, each unit’s entrance is defined from the interior spaces of the project. The public is allowed to penetrate the project through the commercial area in the ground floor. A clear path connects pedestrians from the adjacent park into the promenade. In addition, visitors are also invited to the office space on the first floor which connects to the private residential space.

The ground Floor houses the public realm with retail and parking while the third floor is reserved for private interaction of the community.

While the live units are limited to two stories, the live-work units have two levels allocated for workspace and two for living. By dividing the workspace, the second level becomes a separated private workspace while still having a doorway to the street on the ground level.

Two masses intersect to create a core multilayered space in the same way in which Joshua Tree NP represents a transition zone between the Colorado and the Mojave deserts. The multipurpose room incorporates an exhibit space as well as a several climbing walls, including one which is integrated with the vertical circulation paths. The climbers are able to enjoy the views through several opening and resting stops along the wall. But they also become performers to the students in the overlooking classrooms. The project required an analysis of heat, light, water, and orientation to minimize the dependency on natural resources. In order to cool the structure and protect the visitor from direct sun, a perforated shading system which envelopes the structure was developed.

The floor plan is developed according to the sun’s path as well as the adjacent water system. The north is dedicated to public program while the private residence and the laboratories are located at the south. The climbing walls are at the center of the public spaces and have direct views to the national park. The climbers are set at center stage while they are rewarded in views at the different vertical stops.

Due to limited resources, the project was designed with attention to environmental control and sustainable systems. Air circulation, overhangs, and water systems were developed. In addition, in order to increase indoor and outdoor comfort, an enveloping shading system was developed. The skin is composed of special photovoltaic panels which allows for partial light to pass through. The walls and roofs and then shaded in a pattern that varies according to time of day.

The structure was submerged 4 feet in order to create a suitable environment from the researches that inhabit the center, but also to connect the employees to the ground which they are researching. The living area is protected by the skin both from western sun exposure and allows for privacy.
