Monotype Plantin

has been designed with modern printing processes in mind: it was made for the Monotype machine, which achieved initial popularity in Europe. (35/34 pt.) Strenghts and features This strength and colour of the Monotype Plantin typeface is also helpful when used in display and carving sizes. Its colour made Monotype Plantin also more suitable for magazines and periodicals, rather than books. To adapt it even more to this kind of operation, the x-height of Robert Granjon’s type was exaggerated in Monotype Plantin as well. Legibility in small sizes, including as small as 6-point, should be ensured. To achieve this, the serifs were strongly bracketed and several letters rationalized. for instance, counters of a and e were enlarged. Eventually, Monotype Plantin was supposed to retain the spirit of a classical historical model. Classic old-face text design was preserved in the structure. However, the final design was more comparable to a Clarendon than to a 16-century Garamond. (8/9,5 pt.)


Plantin

Historical background Plantin is a family of text typefaces created by Monotype in 1913. Their namesake, Christophe Plantin (Christoffel Plantijn in Dutch), was born in France during the year 1520. In 1549, he moved to Antwerp, located in presentday Belgium. There he began printing in 1555. For a brief time, he also worked at the University of Leiden, in the Netherlands. Typefaces used in Christophe Plantin’s books inspired future typographic developments. In 1913, the English Monotype Corporation’s manager Frank Hinman Pierpont directed the Plantin revival. Based on 16th century specimens from the Plantin-Moretus Museum in Antwerp, specifically a type cut by Robert Granjon and a separate cursive Italic, the “Plantin” typeface was conceived. Plantin was drawn for use in mechanical typesetting on the international publishing markets. Plantin, and the historical models that inspired it, are old-style typefaces in the French manner, but with x-height that are larger than those found in Claude Garamond’s work.

The company Monotype Imaging Holdings is a Delaware corporation based in Woburn, Massachusetts and specializing in typesetting and typeface design (type foundry) as well as text and imaging solutions for use with consumer electronics devices. Monotype Imaging Holdings is the owner of Monotype Imaging Inc., Linotype, International Typeface Corporation, among others. Monotype Imaging Holdings and its predecessors and subsidiaries have been responsible for many developments in printing technology—in particular the Monotype machine, which was the first fully mechanical typesetter, and the Linotype machine—and the design and production of typefaces in the 19th and 20th centuries. Monotype Imaging’s subsidiaries are the owners of some of the most widely used typeface designs, including Helvetica, ITC Franklin Gothic, ITC Avant Garde, and Optima.

Plantin would go on to influence another Monotype design, Times New Roman. Stanley Morison and Victor Larent used Plantin as a reference during that typeface’s cutting. Like Garamond, Plantin is exceptionally legible and makes a classic, elegant impression. Plantin is indeed a remarkably accommodating type face. The firm modelling of the strokes and the serifs in the letters make the mass appearance stronger than usual; the absence of thin elements ensures a good result on coated papers; and the compact structure of the letters, without loss of size makes Plantin one of the economical faces in use. In short, it is essentially an all-purpose face, excellent for periodical or jobbing work, and very effective in many sorts of book and magazine publishing. Plantin’s Bold weight was especially optimized to provide ample contrast: bulkiness was avoided by introducing a slight sharpening to the forms of the typeface’s serifs.

In 1913, only eight months after the start of production of the typeface, the Monotype Plantin Series 110 was ready for the market. The typeface Monotype Plantin is named after the printer, Christopher Plantin. Monotype Plantin is a typeface that demonstrates a non-logical sequence of proportions throughout its various sizes. Whereas Pierpont is today known as Monotype Plantin’s designer, the actual design can be contributed to Fritz Stelzer, Pierpont’s assistant and successor, who was the literal man guiding the team. In 1913, only eight months after the start of production of the typeface, the Monotype Plantin Series 110 was ready for the market. The typeface Monotype Plantin is named after the printer, Christopher Plantin. Two separate units built the Monotype machine: the keyboard is used to enter the text to be printed. From there, perforated tape in the form of a paper spool is created, and is later inserted in the hot-metal composition system. Using the instructions of the perforated tape, and based on a grid
