BETWEEN LAND AND SEA DUNKERQUE, FRANCE

Diploma Project - 2009 Course director : Didier REBOIS

What come first, buildings or urban spaces? In the central harbour areas of Dunkerque, planning starts with the spaces, only later are the buildings added. The urban space and city life are the star!ng point for a development for the benefit of the ci!zens

DUNKERQUE

The project is about the crea!on of both permanent and flexible public spaces network that connects built space, water and green areas. This network will be able to receive a series of building typologies and the necessary programmes in order to create a real extension of the town centre. SITE

The project focuses on the process rather than the form, trying to define a structure and a set of rules on which the town will set up in the future.

Jan Gehl, Aalborg, Danmark, 2007 - URBAN REALM STRATEGY

The harbour areas will be reconquered in the short term by the ci!zens through an approach of progressive urbanisa!on. Ephemeral interven!ons will let them appropriate the new free spaces, while a medium-long term development temporality is also established. PUBLIC SPACES

A series of building typologies are gradually inserted into the grid. Their volume and loca!on are defined in order to develop a variety of building scales, to interact with the environment and the exis!ng built context.

The Fructose Park makes the connec!on between the central town areas and the suburbs and enhances the exis!ng green areas and the canal basin. The Docks Road goes across the site and connects it to the central train sta!on. The Fructose Square is the centre of the new quarter and the waterfront is lined with shops, restaurants and cafes. On the ! p of the pier a high-rise building look out to the sea and its base offers a large esplanade that can be directly reached from the town centre.

USES In order to develop an a"rac!ve town centre extension different programs are mixed together. Among these are: the mul!-ar!s!c pla#orm Fructose around the SugarHalle, an university and research campus next to the park, an offices concentra!on on the main boulevard and a series of public facili!es inside the park. Different kinds of housing are planned all over the area.

DUNES - INHABITING THE NATURE MADRID, SPAIN

School Project - 2008

Course director : Andrés ATELA

Madrid

Rio Manzanares requalifica!on area

PROJECT SITE

The project site is part of the great urban requailifica!on of the Rio Manzanares by Garrido Ga do & West est 8 (2006). ( 006).

A CRITICAL APPROACH The Manzanares River has been isolated for years because of the construc!on of a motorway on its sides. Today the motorway is being buried and the riverbanks are going to be re-appropriated by the ci!zens of Madrid. Garrido & West8 won the compe!!on but their project doesn’t exploit the whole poten!al of this site and ignores many zones. This project tries to fill that void focusing on a par!cular sequence of the Rio, where the Vicente Calderon Stadium is being demolished, leaving to the city a large place with an enormous poten!al.

22

METHODS: SYNTHETIC TABLE (Original size : 150 x 250 cm) This is a tool that enables to collect gradually the main informa!on about the site by different points of view in order to obtain an exhaus!ve analysis and, in the same !me, to develop graphically and synthe!cally a strong project strategy.

DUNES The project plan refers to the natural course shape of the Manzanares River and to the context topography. The public space is the connec!ng element between the many ac!vi!es and between the two sides of the river. The mixture of different environments creates a highquality space for ci!zens and gives a strong iden!ty to this place.

ABSTRACTION The aim of this exercise is to explore the geometric characteris!cs and spa!al poten!als of the cube. This cube has a side length 9 m, the context is generic, the func!ons are extremely simple: ar!st studio, exposi!on space, sleeping room. Everything is subordinated to a purely formal game of solid/void elements and to the richness of the interior spaces.

As private commission by property developer and as a"empt of revitalising the very center of Paris, an unusually-shaped building smoothly adjusts to the context, offering in$mate courtyards that are differently connected to the public space. Floors progressively shrink from the ground to the top, developing large variety of flat typologies and crea$ng long balconies all around the building with impressive views on the Seine historic riversides. The project develops different modes of living (collec#ve, semicollec#ve) and quality common spaces, with a low budget and on a complex shape site.
