In an interdisciplinary group of 5 students, we were charged with placing 7,000 mixed income residents on an urban 30-acre site. Additionally, we set out to incorporate as much agriculture as possible, applying traditional growing methods while adapting new methods to a dense, urban environment.

Responding to a steep slope on a portion of the site, terraced housing allows for an informal feel while optimizing solar exposure. By allowing the character of the site to drive the forms, this design avoids of the homogeneity of earlier subsidized housing communities.

Partnered with an architecture student, our goal was to make the pending closure of the South Park Bridge an opportunity to create a vibrant hub for the South Park community.

Phytoremediation uses the natural power of plants to break down toxins. Mycoremediation is the same process, but using mushrooms. When toxins cannot be broken down, they are absorbed into the plant matter. These plants are then harvested, taking the toxins with them, so they can be disposed of elsewhere or treated in a remediation facility. This process can clean up both soil and water, though it is limited to the surface area and the root zone. It is a slower process than some other remediation strategies, but it is one of the most affordable. Importantly, it is also one of the least invasive techniques, because it does not require any earth moving, heavy machinery, or unsightly facilities.

We created a booklet to help community members understand phytoremediation and other technologies that could be used along the Duwamish corridor.

Duwamish River Studio: South Park, Seattle

With flexible open space on top of the bridge, and newly accessible riverfront below, this design balances the human and ecological needs of the Duwamish River. Where traditional shoreline restoration is not possible, estuary modules are used to re-create intertidal conditions in a highly constructed environment.

In the center of the space, a map lets kids explore their neighborhood in miniature form.

Located on the 2nd-story roof of a new affordable housing community, this design set out to create playful spaces for the many children on site while still allowing adults to gather and relax.

A water feature integrated into a circular seating area creates a relaxed place to socialize.

This design celebrates the African American community who live there, and who were an integral part of the design process. “Pillars of the community” commemorate famous African Americans from Seattle chosen by the residents.

Located on the campus of a high school dorm, this group project aimed to create social spaces that could help relieve some of the stresses of attending high school in a country so recently affected by war.

The design creates diverse pockets of social activity, following a gradient from a modern shelter and entry down to a rain garden and a stone wall inspired by the Croatian vernacular of the countryside.

This Kelsey Creek restoration project included installing large woody debris and large boulders to return the creek’s hydrology to a pre-degradation state. The surrounding area was also restored with native vegetation. I did most of the drafting for the proposed changes while at Natural Systems Design.

Urban Accessories designs, casts, and fabricates a wide variety of cast metal site furnishings, from tree grates to benches and custom plaques. This is one of many cut sheets I produced for them and their clients.

This proposal for the South Park Bridge replacement in Seattle included a new bridge alignment and a rain garden park integrating brick and iron parts of the old drawbridge into the new site. I helped with the drafting while working at HNTB.
