This context inspires me to learn more about the planning and structure of spaces in our 30neighborhoods and communities. The numerous ecological, social, and economic principles of sustainable design heavily influence my work. I believe food culture is a key element in the development o f f u t u re s u sta i n a b l e co m m u n i t i e s . Growing up I spent many summers caring for the family garden on our rural acreage outside Marion, Iowa. This experience gave me the opportunity to appreciate homegrown food, to understood how food is grown, where it comes from, and how to prepare it with family and friends.
My appreciation for the design process, craftsmanship, stewardship, and respect for the enviro nment are part o f my philosophy and stem from my hobbies. The future morphology of sustainable co m m u n i t i e s w i l l b e s h a p e d b y t h e collaborative efforts of concerned citizens; taking the initiative to generate awareness for environmental, social, and economic cerncerns in their landscapes.

west side park | West Side Park was part of was an important design project for the city of Dyersville during the 2012 Community Visioning season. The proposed plan for the expansion o f We st S i de Park refle c t s t h e d e s i re of residents to have expanded passive recreational activities, new pocket parks, youth athletic fields, and additional trails. The design includes a disc golf course
situated in a densely vegetated landscape that provides a wide-range of environmental benefits including: stream bank stabilization, improved wildlife habitat, and reduced stormwater-runoff into Bear Creek and the No rth Fork Maquoketa River. The design also provides space for a new citymarket and performance square, public gardens and public edible landscaping which
would provide year round services to the community. During the course of this project I utilized ArcMap 10, AutoCad Civil 3D, SketchUp and the Adobe Suite products to conduct spatial analysis research in the community, create scaled design drawings and models along with illustrative representations of our proposed design solutions.

lyndale plaza | I am proposing a sustainable development p l a n fo r Ro ya l sto n t h at b u i l d s s o c i a l awareness for natural processes in urban areas, increases housing density, encourages t h e u s e o f p u b l i c t ra n s p o r tat i o n a n d provides mixed-used facilities where people can live, work, and play. These activities are oriented around Lyndale Plaza, which will be the backyard and social gathering space for the neighborhood while providing a connection to the new light rail station.

A s p l a n n i n g p ro g r e s s e s fo r t h e n e w Southwest Light Rail Line in Minneapolis, neighborhoods adjacent to the line are being re-envisioned to provide new residents sustainable, livable communities. Royalston is one of these communities; it is located one stop from Target Field, future home of the proposed intermodal Interchange facility. Royalston is expected to become a reverse-commuter and destination stop due to its proximity to downtown Minneapolis.

To the east, Interstate 94 rises high above the neighborhood, casting a shadow of darkness and traffic noise over the adjacent land area. The north side is bound by the Olson Memorial Highway, a major vehicular connector but also a barrier to pedestrians. A large grade change and private property to the east restrict pedestrian access to Target Field and downtown Minneapolis. The southern edge of Royalston is barred by Glenwood Avenue and the BNSF freight rail.

lyndale plaza | Lyndale Plaza layers and weaves together numerous transit modes to provide vehicular transport, promote light-rail ridership, and enhance the walkability of the neighborhood. The space is designed as a connecting space for users passing through during their daily commute; it is also functions as a park or market space and can be used by outdoor vendors, local shops or cafés.
Lyndale Plaza is the centerpiece of the redesigned Roylston neighborhood. It will link Lyndale Market to the new Royalston LRT station on the east edge of the site. The design choreographs a dialogue between the built environment and societies’ perception of nature. The composition juxtaposes two highly engineered landscapes with contrasting material pallets to paint a picture of man’s relationship to nature.
Lyndale Plaza expresses human intervention in the landscape, and recognizes that the landscapes people live in influence their 30' relationship with the city. It is important that the community gathering space celebrates human social interaction in the landscape and recognizes that natural processes shape and support the health of the environment.
university of iowa memorial union plaza | In the summer of 2008 major flooding a f fe c t e d c o m m u n i t i e s u p a n d d o w n waterways in Eastern Iowa. In Iowa City the Iowa River surpassed the 100-year floodplain nearly reaching the 500-year flood marks. This disaster sparked the Iowa Memorial Union Flood Mitigation and Permanent Recovery Project to protect the iconic structure on the University of Iowa Campus. Today the plaza is frequented as a through space for students using the Iowa Memorial Union Pedestrian Bridge that connects the
main campus to the arts campus on the west side of the river. This design preserves access to the lower level of the Iowa Memorial Union, offering outdoor seating near the cafeteria. The walkway through the plaza has been raised to meet the bridge beside the redesigned amphitheater in order to offer additional flood protection to the Iowa Memorial Union. The design of the plaza borrows architectural cues from both the Iowa Advanced Technology Labs building and the Iowa Memorial Union. These cues play against

one another on the ground plane where smooth stone paving flows out from the Technology Labs building beneath the short walls extending through the plaza from the Iowa Memorial Union. Material changes in these surfaces activate the small scale spaces where people may stop to rest. The new walkway slips through the space in a soft curve that hints at the organic movement of people through the space; contrasting the hard-lines of the built landscape which is permeated by the sidewalk passing through large vertical wall-planes.

5 t h S t r e e t G a r d e n s & D e l a w a r e S q u a r e | kansas city, missouri The 5th Street Gardens grew from an understanding of the opportunities and challenges present in the neighboring River Market and Columbus Park communities in Kansas City, Missouri. Our team identified food culture as a foundation for building a healthier, more sustainable community that would provide educational outreach and community support to local residents.
Strengthening relationships between people and the environment encourages sustainable initiatives that build livable communities. Delaware Square and Garrison Square community centers serve as bookends to the 5th Street Gardens edible-public corridor. Together the spaces provide opportunities for members to participate in

The public park, plaza, and gardens are carved from the bluff overlooking the Missouri River. A series of paths and trails are sewn into the orchard, cascading down the face of the bluff and flowing out onto the waterfront. Delaware Square is the perfect place for public gatherings where friends and family celebrate good food, community, and the environment.
Our team of architecture and landscape architecture students collaborated on the design of the outdoor and indoor spaces to ensure a unified concept that could accommodate the needs of visitors, providing areas for passive and active recreation. I contributed detailed site drawings, a grading plan, hybrid-renderings and a hand-built site model to the project. Riverfront Heritage Trail Bridge

a d i f f e r e n t p e r s p e c t i v e | marion, iowa A motorcyclist is more than that individual who knows how to ride a motorcycle, they know how their bike works, how to work on it, and they know their place in the landscape. Motorcycles are an art, a culture, and a way of traveling which is truly unique. The form and function of a motorcycle, like a landscape, are measured by its aesthetic, ergonomic, and quality characteristics. These characteristics are the productive
of complex relationships found between the pieces of the machine. These pieces are formed around specific contours that determine their functional and aesthetic qualities. These principles of motorcycle design have helped to shape my way of reading the landscape and inspired my work as a landscape architect. M u c h l i ke a l a n d s c a p e a r c h i t e c t , a motorcyclist develops a particular awareness
of the world around them when they move through space. Riding a motorcycle through the landscape brings you close to the elements of the environment; the wind, rain, and lay of the land, demand your attention. I find clarity in this movement, and my mind is at ease when I ride through the soft mist on a cool spring evening.
