Our Celtic Chapel endorses the vision of the House. Completed in March 2010, it is built in medieval style and is available for private and corporate worship. Our Garden is part of the Quiet Garden Trust and also one of few places in Wales with a wild bird garden, having equipment for viewing from the conservatory. Water cascades down to the lily pond with the flowers adding colour and beauty. Seats are strategically placed to capture the view of the garden, countryside and coast. A small ‘Hermitage’ may be used for personal prayer and quiet times. Step outside and wander onto open moorland with its purple heather and golden gorse, and view the Gower ponies grazing on the gently sloping hillside. A leisurely walk to the cliff-top takes you to a beautiful view of Three Cliffs Bay - come and see for yourself! Telephone: +44 (0)1792 371 317 to book.

‘ In this place I will give peace ’ – words which have blessed so many people as they step inside the porch at Nicholaston House. Go through the door and look up to see the words emblazoned on the wall of the stairs the words from Psalm 8 written to glorify God in His majesty.   The mural is the work of a small group of ladies, led by Viv Lewis, who have enjoyed creating this wall hanging following the Godgiven vision, to a visiting member of the prayer ministry team, of the House being a place of blessing.   As people stay and receive from God, blessing flows from the house and touches other people’s lives so that the effect of God’s love becomes immense, like an ocean. How great is the God we adore. Telephone: +44 (0)1792 371 317 to book.

Eating Disorder Courses

P

‘ The single most valuable resource in my journey to health ’

Background to Overcoming Eating Disorder (OED) Courses The first OED course was established by Helena Wilkinson, assisted by Nikki Cole, nearly 20 years ago whilst they were running Kainos Trust, a charity for eating disorder sufferers and their carers. In 2004 Kainos Trust merged with Swansea City Mission and the OED courses were developed. This year sees a change in the structure to the courses, in addition to an equine-based course. Course Leader Helena Wilkinson is a writer, trainer, and e q u i n e - f a c i l i t a t e d p s y c h o t h e r a p y practitioner (EFP). She is the author of 11 books, including the bestsellers, ‘Puppet on a String’, an autobiographical account of her fight with, and recovery from, anorexia, and ‘Beyond Chaotic Eating’, a way out of anorexia, bulimia and compulsive eating. Helena has worked with eating disorder sufferers for the last 30 years.

Why Attend an OED Course? We often receive feedback that attending an OED course has brought about significant change in people’s lives not found elsewhere. We believe there are a number of influencing factors: …spending time in an accepting and safe environment, away from home and work pressures; …a dedicated team with decades of experience in eating disorders and related conditions; …a homely, non-clinical setting, in an area of natural beauty; …an ethos throughout the whole House of authentic care and compassion; …insightful teaching which addresses the underlying issues, not just the symptoms; …a strong belief, and testimonies to prove, that full recovery is possible; …the opportunity to address the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects; and …a work underpinned by prayer. Telephone: +44 (0)1792 371 317 to book.

15

‘ Thank you so much for an amazing time at the OED course; I can't quite believe the difference I already feel. After years and years of struggling I'm now able to find a path out of this awful disorder. ’ Structure of OED Courses After completing a Booking Enquiry Form you will be contacted by one of the OED team to arrange a phone/Skype call. This will enable us to find out about your current situation and for you to ask any questions about the course. You will then be advised as to whether we feel OED Stage 1 is  beneficial at this point. After OED Stage 1 you may apply to attend OED Stage 2 and then Stage 3. The same assessment will take place with one of the team prior to acceptance on a course. If you are not ready to progress to the next stage, there is the option to  repeat the previous stage (column 1) or alternatively attend a  Personal Development Weekend and/or a Prayer and Refreshing Week (column 3). OED Stage 1 is for those suffering from an eating disorder (anorexia, bulimia, compulsive eating) who are ready to concentrate on recovery. The course looks at the role of eating disorders and helps individuals to: a) review their relationship with food and; b) understand the root causes and address thought patterns and emotions. Interactive teaching, creativity, equine-facilitated group work, recreational activities and evening reflections are all utilised. The fourth day enables individuals to draw from what they have learnt and formulate a ‘Going Home Plan’.

OED Stage 2 is available to those who have completed Stage 1. In order to cope with the depth and content of the course, individuals need to have made progress physically and emotionally. It is also necessary to have a support structure in place and ideally be in therapy. As in OED Stage 1 interactive teaching, creativity, equine-facilitated group work and evening reflections form an important part of the week. The main areas covered are a) blockages and setbacks to change, b) the role of unmet childhood needs, and c) the spiritual aspect of recovery. To aid the healing process individual prayer ministry appointments feature twice during the course.

OED Stage 3 is available to those who have completed Stages 1 & 2. It largely concentrates on understanding our relationship with others and ourselves and focuses on trust, boundaries, emotions, personality, selfacceptance and self-care. It is a journey of self-development mainly explored through using horses. It is not necessary to have any horse experience and will not involve riding. The teaching and creativity will take place at Nicholaston House whilst the equine work will take place in a nearby village. Telephone: +44 (0)1792 371 317 to book.
