A truly lovely place for spiritual refreshment.”

Welcome It is my pleasure to introduce the 2018 programme of events and extend to you, on behalf of all trustees, staff and volunteers, our warmest greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 2017 has been a busy year for the House; we have been greatly encouraged seeing transformations in people’s lives through their visit to one of our retreats, events or courses. We have also received encouraging words and testimonies from groups who have stayed at Nicholaston House, which confirms God is at work and continues to bless in so many ways. During 2016/17 our team structure has evolved as team members take up new roles within the House. Together we are working towards the future of Nicholaston House and an ambitious development programme which will enable us to enlarge our tent and increase our offering to those who seek peace, rest, fellowship and encouragement on their journey of faith. We have welcomed new staff and volunteers – together we look forward to what God has in store for the future work of Nicholaston House and the part we all play in this. As a

team we look forward to serving all who visit us, God willing, in the year to come. Please pray for the team and work of the House, remembering especially that many who work and serve do so out of a sense of calling to God’s work, often sacrificially. Please consider standing with us as a partner as we journey together - see page 13 for details about how you can stand with us. Please follow our news by signing up to our e-newsletter via our website, or by following us on Twitter and Facebook, where regular postings and features keep our friends and guests informed about latest news, availability and offers. We hope to see you soon and look forward to welcoming you to Nicholaston House. Every blessing,

The Celtic Chapel endorses the vision of the House. Completed in March 2010, it is built in medieval style and is available for private and corporate worship. The Garden is part of the Quiet Garden Movement and also one of a few places in Wales with a wild bird garden, having equipment for viewing from the conservatory. Water cascades down to the lily pond with the flowers adding colour and beauty. Seats are strategically placed to capture the view of the garden, countryside and coast. A small ‘Hermitage’ may be used for personal prayer and quiet times. Step outside and wander onto open moorland with its purple heather and golden gorse, and view the Gower ponies grazing on the gently sloping hillside. A leisurely walk to the cliff-top takes you to a beautiful view of Three Cliffs Bay come and see for yourself!

I deeply appreciated the calm, peaceful and friendly atmosphere and it all helped my anxiety enormously.

About Us Nicholaston House is Swansea City Mission and Educational Trust’s main charitable operation, having purchased the House in 1998 thereby establishing a Christian Retreat and Conference Centre overlooking Oxwich Bay. The focus of Nicholaston House is to be a centre for healing and restoration channelled through various retreats and courses, and to facilitate Christian groups for conferences and away days. We want guests to have the best in the Christian residential experience and to that end we: V see people as the priority and desire to treat our guests with friendliness, respect and courtesy; V strive towards high standards of hygiene, safety, maintenance and access in accordance with current legal requirements; and V aim to deal speedily and responsibly with any queries that may arise.

In this place I will give peace” – words which have blessed so many people as they step inside the porch at Nicholaston House. Go through the door and look up to see the words emblazoned on the wall of the stairs - the words from Psalm 8 written to glorify God in His majesty. The mural is the work of a small group of ladies, led by Viv Lewis, who have enjoyed creating this wall hanging; the inspiration for the mural was a God-given vision to a visiting member of the prayer ministry team, of the House being a place of blessing. As people stay and receive from God, blessing flows from the House and touches other people’s lives so that the effect of God’s love becomes immense, like an ocean. How great is the God we adore.

I met God for the first time in years – I heard Him speak so clearly and wonderfully.”

Statement of Faith We believe in:

The sovereignty and grace of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit in creation, providence, revelation and final judgement. The Divine inspiration of the Holy Scriptures and its consequent entire trustworthiness and supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct. The universal sinfulness and guilt of fallen man making him subject to God’s wrath and condemnation. The substitutionary sacrifice of the incarnate Son of God as the sole and sufficient ground of the redemption from the guilt and power of sin and from its eternal consequences. The justification of the sinner saved by the grace of God through faith in Christ crucified and risen from the dead. The illuminating, regenerating, indwelling and sanctifying work of God the Holy Spirit. The priesthood of all believers who the universal Church, the Body of which Christ is the Head and which is committed by His command to the proclamation of the Gospel throughout the world. The expectation of the personal, visible return of the Lord Jesus Christ in power and glory.

I love the peace of the House and the time to rest and listen to God.”

Nicholaston House: th 20 Anniversary Followers of Jesus are urged to ‘grow up into Christ Jesus’, which the Christian Retreat and Conference Centre called Nicholaston House seeks to implement. Prompted by, we believe, God’s direction to seek a residential centre as a place of healing to augment the ongoing Christian counselling in Swansea, in October 1998 Swansea City Mission purchased an eleven-bedroom hotel on Gower, the peninsula west of the town. This required substantial work and refurbishment, much of which was carried out voluntarily by Christians from local churches. The House has superb views over Oxwich Bay, with easy access to walk onto Cefn Bryn. Over twenty years Nicholaston has developed to offer a range of activities such as prayer ministry retreats, church away days, art and walking weeks, silent retreats, and courses to help overcome eating disorders, with bed and breakfast and half-board accommodation available at other times.

The Future After a number of years of preparing and presenting plans for the development of Nicholaston House, in January 2017 written confirmation was received granting full planning permission to expand and develop the facilities. Please join us on this journey and partner with us. We have an opportunity to be part of something wonderful together as we see the Lord unfold His plan. Some said that we would never have planning permission for such a development in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty - we have. The Lord has gone before us; let us follow Him into this expansive and exciting future, and see what else He would do.

Warm and loving staff; good food; clean rooms.

Eating Disorder Recovery Courses OED (Overcoming Eating Disorders) courses were set up by Helena Wilkinson and Nikki Cole over 20 years ago while they were running Kainos Trust, which merged in 2014 with Swansea City Mission. The unique approach and setting of Nicholaston House, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, has resulted in many transformed lives; a number of those who have made a full recovery are now on team as volunteers. Significant factors include: V a homely non-clinical setting V an accepting and safe environment V an experienced team offering insight and personal input V teaching which addresses the physical, emotional and spiritual V testimonies to prove that full recovery is possible V the use of creative tools to aid emotional expression V involvement with animals including equine-assisted therapy

Course information Courses (limited to 8 delegates) are open to those with an eating disorder or chaotic eating patterns who want to address their issues. Prior to attending, a phone call will be arranged and once accepted you will be sent some exercises to complete. Completing an OED ‘foundations’ course is a pre-requisite to applying for either the ‘transitions’ or ‘connections’ course. To get the most out of the courses it is important to have a support structure in place at home and ideally be in therapy. OED foundations - looks at the role of eating disorders, thought patterns, what stops change, keeping safe, identity and worth. OED transitions - looks at unmet needs, the wounded heart, shame, stress, anxiety, loneliness, defence mechanisms and building blocks to emotional heath. OED connections - looks at the roles we play, communication, assertiveness, resilience, decision-making, boundaries and healthy relationships. Each course will also address relationship with food, goal-setting and spiritual freedom.
