Personal Statement

Education

Keep tring is my principal on design learning. Since college assignments can’t satisfy me, I start to go ouside to learn. I tried to start a company, organization to share and experience new ideas. Still tring to make all kinds of design, ceramic, carpentry, interaction design...... By doing these works, I hope I can find what is my own design.

About relationship

We catched the image of nest as our topic to make further design.

Early development

In the beginning, we focused on the relationship between people, aiming for making a product to improve it. Conducting brain storming, rough sketch, observation, film watching to make clear the design possibilities. Family was our choice. Every person has a shelter making him or her cozy. After Sketch and Arrangement, we decided to design an object near the gate. Design Spot

In the initial part of our design, we so rely on the text that it becomes a kind of obstacle. This time, we changed the way of thinking—by sketching. It provided us some possible ways for developing following ideas. Then, we arranged these results by writing keywords on post-it, finding it is important to improve the image of nest near the area of gate. If we could design a furniture in front of the door, people could see it upon caming back, making them feel warm and released after a day of hard work. Framily | Industrial design

Texture testing

Once having development on design, we started the experiment on texture. Testing Process

It is sometimes troublesome to start up with emotional design, therefor while we thinking and researching, we also had some experiments. For example, first, we made the image board to show our feeling toward the topic by using picture from photography, product, artwork. After grasping the general ideas, we moved on to the material testing. We tried to combine some materials so that we can fastly understand the limit of combining different materials. We chose a real transparent bottle as the base to match different type of caps, first because the transparent part is hard for us to simulat by computer rendering. Second, the tight combination between cap and bottle is the most basic way to combine two things, understanding the limit of material processing. Framily | Industrial design

Parents are classmates in college. Father is now working in a constructure company, while mother works in post office nearby because of family. Sister leaves family to study college in Taipei. Comparing to young brother, she behaves herself. Brother is in high school now, going to the cram school two times a week,and also joining the guitar club. For him, home is nothing but a place to sleep.

李阿嬤現在帶著兩個就讀高中的孫子同住,他們爸媽在他們六歲時離異,而爸爸現在在中鋼工作,住那邊 的員工宿舍,因此阿嬤就負責照顧他們的工作。

家裡除了爸媽以外有兩個小孩,她跟小她一歲的妹妹。

大樓公寓,外有陽台。

透天厝。家裡一樓以前租給補習班,二樓是客廳和廚房,三樓是臥房,四樓則是神明廳跟琴房。目前一樓沒 有租了,就閒置下來,但有一個桌子,有時會放一些雜物。

爸媽基本上算是開明,但是因為是家中第一個小孩的關係,希望可以完全參與小孩的生活。

李阿罵和孫子相處方式是把他們當朋友,回家就稍微關心一下,今天做了甚麼,有沒有錢等寒暄。就儘管 課業不見得很棒,但是重要的是不要學壞,這樣阿嬤就心滿意足了。

家裡的小孩都在外讀書,一個南一個北,所以只要有一家團聚的機會就會特別珍惜。爸媽對小孩的寵愛是 不用說的,跟妹妹也只差一歲,所以感情也很不錯。

1-1 你回家的經驗如何? 流程是甚麼? 鞋櫃放在門口外,把鞋子放好後就會進房子,通常可以透過鞋子和電視聲得知有沒有人在家,假如有人看 電視的時候,宣玲有時候會把東西丟在客廳,也省不了爸媽一陣murmur,但整體上還算很有紀律的小孩 子。

1-1 你回家的經驗如何? 流程是甚麼? 雖然希望能像是朋友一樣相處,但其實回家就是開始管教它們,像是為甚麼鞋子沒擺好、書包衣服亂丟在 沙發之類的,總會覺得這些事情不應該是再讓阿嬤擔心了吧? 但以鞋子為例,孫子們總是會說,啊就明天 還要穿呀,為什麼要擺那麼好? 而且擺鞋櫃好麻煩之類的,就儘管已經準備了兩個鞋櫃給他們了呢。到了 週末,不免還是會要求他們擺,但孫子們總顯得還是意興闌珊。

1-1 你回家的經驗如何? 流程是甚麼? 回家的時候家裡幾乎都會有人在,所以回家的流程很簡單,在一樓的樓梯間換鞋子,然後到三樓放包包、 換衣服,可能接著洗澡或吃飯。 小時候習慣比較差的時候會把襪子和書包放了丟在客廳,可是因為後來還是要自己拿回房間,所以漸漸 地就比較不會這樣。

典型電梯公寓 0-2 家庭氣氛如何? 她非常不喜歡爸爸,雖然不知道細節,但應該是非常不顧 家庭的壞人。而媽媽由於是家管的關係,生活圈非常小, 很容易聽信最熟識的親信的話,所以就很武斷,但這個可 能只是片面的情況,畢竟也有提到在外讀書時每天都會維 持和家裡得聯繫,應該還是念家的,但因為爸爸的關係就 對家庭顯得不太信任。

全家只有老媽會使用雨衣,因為會騎腳踏車出去買菜,而這個東西通常也是直接放在腳踏車上。因此會放 在家裡的只有雨傘,會在陽台前面附近的木頭地板那邊,其實多少會覺得有點髒,頗為麻煩。 1-3 家人回家的行為大概又如何呢? 沒特別注意欸! 但好像就我習慣差一點 2-1 對於"家裡有人在家",有怎樣的感受和經驗呢? 由於爸媽的工作關係,一週總有幾天他們能夠早點回家,雖然大部分情況下會覺得不錯,但由於爸媽很希 望可以完全了解小孩的生活,因此就覺得相當不自在。

媽媽大概5點多下班就回家了,開門換好鞋子後會先打開樓梯間的燈,到睡前確定沒人會回家了才會關燈 。爸爸大概6點多晚餐前會回到家,然後家人都會把鑰匙掛在二樓門口附近的鑰匙架上,不過她和妹妹的 宿舍鑰匙都會放在自己身上。 早上的話,爸媽會準備好早餐放在餐桌上再出門。因為她跟妹妹住在同一個房間裡面,所以不太會發生早 上起床找不到人的事情。

就是很安心也很開心。

高中的時候和家庭關係蠻僵的,和爸爸感情不好,媽媽常夾在中間甚感猶豫。

爸爸特別注重小孩的教育,只要小孩想要學習,甚麼錢都花得很不手軟;媽媽則是對家庭成員是否溫飽特 別重視,基本上家裡都挺和樂的,彼此之間都已經很習慣互相依賴。

跟媽媽關係很不錯,雖然作息會錯開,但是會透過便利貼來傳遞想要給對方的訊息。

1-1 你回家的經驗如何? 流程是甚麼? 把門打開之後,把鞋子隨便脫在門口後,就把東西丟在房間裡面,再來「洗手」。

1-1 你回家的經驗如何? 流程是甚麼? 最近因為工作的關係,作息時間大概都是從凌晨三點直到 早上十點,回家很晚很晚,家人幾乎都睡了,但回家媽媽 一定就會醒來。但由於擔心小孩的關係,就會不斷提到應 該換工作的至情,對她來說就嘮嘮叨叨,並不是很愉悅的 樣子。

2-1 對於"家裡有人在家",有怎樣的感受和經驗呢? 對她來說,回家是非常非常差的感受,因為爸爸和媽媽對她來說都是相當負面的感覺,整個家庭都對 她是非常不友善的,也因此在大學期間寒暑假都是在台南度過的,不太會回家,當然每天都 會和媽媽 弟弟聊天,但似乎仍對於家庭觀感沒有很好,現在會住在家裡只是一時權宜之計,假如之後存到錢就 會毫不猶豫地搬出去,因此對於家裡的一切似乎也都沒太在意。

1-3 家人回家的行為大概又如何呢? 大致上跟我差不多,晚上比較晚的話就會把鐵捲門關上,如果有人會更晚回家,就會留外面的燈給他。爸 爸會要求自己的東西要自己收好,所以我們家比較不會有東西亂擺,就算有亂擺也不會有人去收,但是隔 天會有人要被念了。

我高中大多比較希望家裡沒有人欸,因為這樣就可以做些見不得人的事情惹^.<。假如希望家裡有人大概 都是肚子餓吧。

1-3 家人回家的行為大概又如何呢? 老爸會特別整理鞋子,大家基本上都會把自己的東西放到自己房間,我們間頗為規律。

就是很放鬆吧!不用再去多想甚麼事情做了甚麼事情沒做,回家就可以好好休息,好像可以把自己交給這 個家一樣。

晚上我樓下就會看有沒有燈亮,但真正關鍵是開鐵門的時候,假如有反鎖就代表沒人了。因為家裡很小, 大家時間也很規律,大概也很容易猜想誰在家。

Layout? 五樓透天 0-2 家庭氣氛如何? 由於爸爸和媽媽要開專藝輸出店,作息時間大概都是凌晨兩三點到早上十點睡覺,工作時間從中午到 近午夜,因此平日要見到小孩機會不太多,據老闆娘說,大概就只有晚上回家裝便當的時候可以簡單 和小孩聊一下天。假日會很認真和小孩在一起,可以的話也會多多出去玩,看來應該是不錯,但是老 闆娘有特別提到該罵的時候就會罵,有一次回家裝便當的時候,在樓下看到整棟就只有二樓燈有亮, 而那邊就是主要婆婆和小孩的生活樓層,很開心蹦蹦跳跳的上去(並呼叫家人的名子)時,發現兒子有點 異樣地躺在床上,心中大概猜到是偷玩電腦被抓到,就直接問他「剛剛是不是有偷玩電腦?」,小孩達 三次沒有,就直接甩巴掌了。她說第一沒開燈殘害勢力,第二說謊話,從那次之後,所有這類事情報 備就和爸爸說就好,而老闆娘有疑問直接找爸爸問。由此可見嬤嬤應該在這個家庭比較是黑臉的腳色 ,而其他長輩都比較疼愛小孩一些。 1-1 你回家的經驗如何? 流程是甚麼? 正常時間回家大多會蹦蹦跳跳的(如0-2),但一般日因為作息時間偏差其實比較沒有機會。 2-1 對於"家裡有人在家",有怎樣的感受和經驗呢? 老闆娘十分在乎家,他在回答這個時候,他一直和他爸媽都有很好的感情,結婚後有一次和爸爸大吵一架 ,第一次掛爸爸電話, 自己當下有點後悔,而在老家的菲傭也有說爸爸當下十分憤怒和難過,因此有好一 陣子完全斷絕了聯絡,直到決定把全家老小一起帶回娘家, 「總不會把全家趕走吧?」回老家時,老爸正好 在外買東西,就直接在老爸快回家的路上奔跑撒嬌,而老爸只說:「回來就好!」算是消弭了一次紛爭。 她和自己父母無話不談,在爸媽離開時也因此不帶有任何遺憾,畢竟生死有數,但她已經把能做的都做完 了,她也是用這種心態經營家庭,因此回家大概就是母愛的發揮了。 2-2 是透過甚麼行為去看"家裡有人在家"呢?

小孩在睡覺前會把書包放在客廳,因此老闆娘在回家後會去看小孩的作業、聯絡簿,批閱完就會擺在桌上 ,假如有甚麼事情會用便利貼在桌子或是簿子上,但留字並不慣例。至於沒有特別留「物品」溝通的習慣( 不過她可能會錯意,以為是指禮物),他說他們家不會用這種方式表達,會直接用言語和肢體互動為主。

媽媽一大早就會出門去運動或是買菜。Maxine則是8點左右要到成大上班,晚上6點多左右會回到家。

For targeting location, hall way was chosen. And then, we were interested to the story happened there from different context of people. Many interviews about special story, experience for people from different career, age, gender, family structure had been conducted. The result showed that care givers and receivers have different feeling and action when they go back and leave home.

Making a hallway furniture with commnication was the target, but form was still need to find. Proposal 2

After a wide development, we decide the form of shoes rack with communication function as the final proposal. Proposal #1 and #2 has same function including message writing, mail and shoes placing. Also, light is crucial for the scenario of coming back home. Framily | Industrial design

To check the usability of proposal #3, we made the cardboard model to check its size. Model detail 22

The design we proposed before had a critical failure: they were not touching. After a lot of sketches and discuss, we came out a new form, proposal #3: the frames and a bench with a light. Each frame had its function so that people could do something with it while they changing their shoes, it was also the reason that we combine a bench in this system. To check the usability of proposal #3, we made the cardboard model to check its size.

The carpentry is one of the tough part through the process of design. From buying and transporting, dealing with carpenters and the postproducing works, it is made by ourselves. Although the industrial thinking have trained us to consider mass producing, we also tried to put some craft techniques into this projects to filled it with more emotion.

1 Mirror Clock It is simply a clock hanging on the wall of hall way or living room at home, making it easier to check the time when around. If there is a need to take a look in the mirror, the clock display will automatically disappear when standing in front of it several seconds.

Other than adsorbing objects, the round magnets are also a key rack. We can learn if our family are at home or not when we put the key in the corresponding colored board.

The bench below provide a place to lay our shoes and put our shoes on. The slim surface is a place we can temporarily put something we carry with us. The lamp on the left side is a photosensitive lamp, it lights up automatically when it is too dark around, and vice versa. We can also turn it into manual mode, and adjust the brughtness of th light. At last the lamp we keep for our familiy member who comes back home late is the last puzzel of Framily.
