Three States of Mind: Self-Images

Nick Petranic Sign + Symbol Spring 2013

Objective

Goals

Students first shoot a series of photographic self-images that clearly portray radical distinct expressions or states of mind. Students will also research historical or contemporary portraits that clearly expressed differentiated states of being. Students then select three of their own self images and produce three simplified figurative picture marks using black and white vector art produced Adobe Illustrator. Students will carefully consider semiotic evaluation criteria developed by AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Arts) that include semantic, syntactic and pragmatic components.

Students will understand the methodology of designing a unified set of figurative picture marks that clearly expressed three clearly differentiated facial expressions or states of mind. Evaluation includes evidence of a clear understanding of simplification and graphic clarity. Projects will be evaluated on basic semiotic principles that included semantic, syntactic and pragmatic dimensions used in professional practice.

Research When beginning to research portraits I found myself in looking at varying mediums of portraits. One thing they all had in common was strong expressions and some what exaggerated features.

Name + Mission Institute of Modern Painting Mission Our institution educates visitors about modern painting styles, trends, and history by means of tours, art appreciation classes, and visiting artists.

Core Values We hope to inspire and educate the public by making modern paintings accessible to all.

Research When we began this project we set out to define the five major styles that would embody the Institute of Modern Painting. After much research and consideration we decided to base our five sub-marks on Impressionism, Surrealism, Cubism, Abstract Expressionism, and Pop Art. These five art styles represent the variety of new approaches to artwork, and experimentation that occured during the Modern Art movement. We needed unify these five, vastly different styles into a group of marks that could work well together as a single unit. We decided to focus on well-known or highly significant portraits from each style which also accomplishes the task of "giving a face" to each style.

Process Main Mark Tracings When we began thinking about our main mark we knew that we wanted it to be comprised of our five other marks. We began thinking about distorting our designs as if they were actually paintings hanging upon different walls. From there, we started to wonder what it would be like if we created our main mark to actually represent the Institute of Modern Painting itself and drew inspiration from the architect Frank Gehry whose works are not only examples of ingenious architecture, but also fine examples of modern sculpture. Logotypes Initials and Numbers

Nick Petranic Spring 2013

Objective

Goals

Students investigate company and organizational brands that make use of trademarks designed with letterforms, initials, numbers or combinations of these. No pictures or images will be used for this project. Students will sort their acquired trademarks into the following categories; technology, culture, entertainment, environment and energy.

Students will demonstrate a clear understanding of typographic trademarks based on carefully written mission and core values statements. They will be evaluated on the alignment between mission, core values and typographic appropriateness. Students will also understand and demonstrate a mastery of color identity and technical specifications as used in professional practice.

Students then name and design 5 new company or organizational names by firstwriting mission and core value statements. After the naming process is completed students then design 5 logotypes and positioning statements using only typography.

connected feeling. I also wanted to highlight the “ed” portion of “Connected”. Reminding the viewer of Connected’s most important core value: education.

it was clear the logotype would be more successful if a stencil type face were used.

Mission Statement + Core Values Mission Beetle Kill Laboratories researches and develops solutions to fight beetle kill locally in the Rocky Mountains and nationally reducing forest decay, and fires.

Beetle Kill Laboratories

Core Values Research focused on natural solutions Develop long term solutions with practicality in mind Reducing forrest decay, fires and the over population of the Mountain Pine Beetle

Sean Finch + Nick Petranic Spring 2013

Research

Research The beetle itself is good for nature, because they attack the older trees in the forest and naturally thin out the forests of North America and British Columbia. Although with warming temperatures the beetles are over populating and staying alive through seasons that originally they weren’t able to without going dormant. They have moved now to attacking trees both young and old. As the forest decay from these beetles there is dead lumber throughout the forests waiting to catch a spark which can be even more devastating to our forest than these bettles

Mountain Pine Beetle Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Arthropoda Class: Insecta Order: Coleptrea Family:Curculionidae Subfamily: Scolytinae Genus: Dendroctonus Binomial Name: Dendroctonus Ponderosae Measures: 5mm

Naming When thinking of a name we first looked abstractly. After coming to the conclusion that an abstract name would be ineffective and general. We decided to go a more literal approach and settled on Beetle Kill Laboratories.

Process When coming up with a mark we wanted to keep it literal to keep consistent with the name. We did many variations of the Mountain Pine Beetle but landed on a graphic mark.
