PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Stacey Pittroff-Barona, CCE, President This Spring has been a powerful reminder of what makes our Industry so special: momentum, meaning, and a shared commitment to moving forward together.

Over the past several weeks, I’ve had the opportunity to attend and participate in these meaningful events: the NICA Spring Board Meeting, the Bar and Restaurant Expo, and Pizza Expo in Las Vegas, as well as the IAFE Zone 4 Spring Meeting in St. Cloud, MN. Each experience brought its own perspective, but together, they told one clear story—our Industry is evolving, and we are evolving with it.

Building Momentum for the Year Ahead Our Spring Board Meeting, held at the Tuscany in Las Vegas—the same home as NICA Marketplace—was a productive and energizing few days, working through a full agenda. While a few joined us via Zoom (and yes, we were all a little jealous of Ryan Long, CCE calling in from Mexico with that great view), the majority of our group was together in person, and that made all the difference. There is something incredibly valuable about being in the same room—sharing ideas, reading the energy, and building connections that simply can’t be replicated through a screen.

Momentum, Meaning & Moving Forward

Over the course of two and a half days, we worked through a full and highly productive agenda and enjoyed a variety of team-building activities.

One of the highlights was our Elevator Speech exercise which closed out the meeting. It brought energy, laughter, and creativity into the room, but more importantly, it helped us sharpen how we communicate who we are and what we do. That clarity matters—not just within our organization, but as we represent NICA across the Industry.

Most importantly, we accomplished significant business for 2026. With early Strategic Planning already underway, we established clear goals, aligned on priorities, and developed a strong focus moving forward. there is a great deal of momentum and excitement about what lies ahead!

Fresh Ideas & Industry Insight While in Las Vegas, several of us also attended the Bar and Restaurant Expo and the International Pizza Expo, both packed with innovation, energy, and new ideas that left us inspired afterwards.

From emerging food trends to equipment and operational efficiencies, these shows gave us a look at where the broader Food Industry is heading. As Concessionaires, it’s important that we stay connected to those trends while continuing to adapt them to our unique environments. It’s not about changing who we are—it’s about evolving how we operate, serve, and grow.

Our time in Las Vegas also allowed us to connect with key partners who were exhibiting there, including Performance Foodservice and Entegra, and continue conversations about how we can bring more value to our members. These relationships matter, and they’re growing stronger!

That night we had live music from Adam Calvert and then a Cornhole Showdown hosted by the Midwest Showmen’s Association. It was a great way to relax and catch up with people.

Those moments matter. Some of the best conversations and opportunities happen outside of meetings.

Monday morning started with a session on public safety with Tiger Schmittendorf. It was a good reminder that safety isn’t just on the Fair, it’s on us too. How we set up, how we operate, and how aware we are all play a role. It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day, but sessions like that make you stop and think.

One of my favorite parts was hearing from the Snow, Stories & Stronger Partnerships “Info Booth Ladies” from the Minnesota State Fair.

There was also a great session from the Stearns History Museum about preserving Fair History. That one felt especially relevant for many of us who have been doing this for generations.

Sharing that story isn’t just nice; it actually adds value to what we do and people connect with it.

By the time the Zone 4 Meeting wrapped up, the biggest thing I took away was pretty simple: we’re all connected in this Industry. As Fairs, Concessionaires, and Vendors, we all rely on each other. And the better we communicate, tell our story, and work together, the stronger we’ll be. Now it’s just about taking those ideas and putting them to work as we head into the season. Even with weather challenges, people showed up, engaged, and contributed. That’s who we are.

These programs are in place as real tools to help reduce costs, improve efficiency, and support long-term success. When people ask, “Why should I join NICA? What do I get?” my first response is usually a list of great tangible savings—discounts on tires, paint, auto parts, car rentals, credit-card processing, and business supplies. I’ve used many of these myself and saved a lot. But over time I’ve come to believe those material savings aren’t the best benefit NICA offers. The real value is the relationships, knowledge, and camaraderie that come from participating in this organization.

My earliest memories are simple: a gathering at the Miami-Dade County Fair, a bowling night at Bird Bowl, and annual meet-ups at the North Carolina State Fair. Those events planted the seed. As I became more involved—joining the East Council and later the Board of Directors— the connections deepened. One standout memory is the West Council’s Casino Night at the Pima County Fair in Tucson, AZ: more than 200 Concessionaires sharing food, fun, and stories. That spirit inspired “I Got It” Night at the Bloomsburg Fair (in partnership with PSSA), which was a tremendous success and looks to be on track for continued growth.

Are You Missing NICA’s Best Benefit?

NICA Gatherings matter for more than entertainment. They create informal classrooms where Concessionaires exchange ideas, troubleshoot problems, and trade hard-won lessons. Conversations over a meal or between shifts have taught me practical ways to run my business better and sparked innovations I might never have found alone. I truly believe I’m not only a more competent business owner but a better person because of these interactions.

We’re also looking for fresh voices and leaders.

If you’ve thought about joining a Regional Council or running for the Board of Directors, take the leap. I was hesitant at first, too. Serving has been one of the best decisions I’ve made—no regrets.

The rewards and dividends, both personal and professional, are well worth the effort.

You might ask, “Why are Regional Councils important?” Here’s my answer and I am sticking to it! They host social gatherings, build leadership, provide idea networking, allow us to have fun, encourage using benefits, create fundraising opportunities, deliver Industry information, address regional and local concerns, foster camaraderie, enhance brand visibility, boost association growth, and improve communication and outreach. Our Gatherings, Meet Ups, and Conventions are truly the front line of our organization when supported by our social and print media. It is where the Membership, Benefits, and Voice in the Industry aspects of our Strategic Plan come to life.

All of this change requires agility, flexibility, institutional knowledge, and faith. As your Executive Director, it has made me think a lot about the dynamics between timeliness and readiness. WE have all said “it’s time, but I ‘m not ready.” Here are two examples: no Fair opens because it is ready, it opens at 11:30 AM, because the ads say it will. A Fair’s opening is driven by time or deadline, not readiness. If you are pregnant and it’s time for the baby to be born, your readiness does not matter and if you are ready and it is not time for the baby to come, you wait. Mostly we are grateful when timeliness and readiness align.

This is kind of my story. When I turned 75 years old, some of the Board Members and I started talking about my retirement, so we

brought Daryl Whicheloe, CCE back to the Board as the Succession Planning Director to begin the process. Then we had several unfortunate events occur that determined that we had to rebuild a staff first. We thought it was my time, but we realized we had to wait because hiring and training a new team became the requirement of timeliness.

Yes, we had readiness in Standard Operating Procedures and some redundancy, but no team of five people is ready to lose three of them in one year. Timing declared that regardless of what happened, the everyday deadlines would not disappear so we had to solve the top priority circumstances, ready or not, first. WE have done that and now are well on our way to company balance and stability.

I am ready to retire. I will be 79 years old this year and I am having a fabulous time serving NICA, I have some projects I want to finish, and I want to have more time for me while I am still healthy. I plan to participate fully in the 5th Annual NICA Marketplace in 2026 and be present at the NICA Business EXPO in 2027. The Succession Committee is working on the timing, and the staff and I are working on the readiness. For now, there are questions to answer, training to design, and plans to make so as to have a smooth transition.

I believe readiness and timeliness will align perfectly together for all of us and it is our job to communicate how that will happen. We have been working together for over 20 years and you have made me a believer in “Together We Can!” Make it happen professionally and joyfully. ▲

Trent Wilkes, CCE CCE Earned in 2025 My biggest philosophy is I take care of those who take care of me and I help those who help me. While I make sure my expectations are very clear from day one, I strive to maintain a work environment that is comfortable and hopefully enjoyable for my employees. I find that I can retain quality employees who look forward to coming to work everyday and return season after season. I strive to make sure they are well compensated for their hard work efforts as well as making sure they have comfortable accommodations outside of the Concession Trailer. Anytime they use the phrase “working for you,” I always correct them with “you are helping me.” I feel like my own business philosophy is very much in alignment with NICA: “We’re All in This Together,” and “Together We Can!” ▲

Workers want a boss who values their input and struggles. You may not change anything right away but asking them about their work experience shows that you care about them working for you in the years to come. GETTING TO KNOW YOUR Regional Council Members This month, we had the privilege to interview one of East Council Member Robert Groscurth, from Tampa, FL. His responses are below: What is your business and what do you sell?

At Super Dog, we specialize in Footlong Corndogs utilizing my grandfathers home made batter recipe from 75 years ago. Over the years we have added our renowned 18-inch Mega Corn Dog for the novelty of Fairgoers across North America.

What is your annual route?

Florida State Fair, Pasco County Fair, Florida Strawberry Festival, Wisconsin State Fair, Minnesota State Fair, The Eastern States Exposition (Big E), and South Carolina State Fair.

How and why did you become a Concessionaire?

I am the Third Generation running Super Dog. We have been in business for over 75 years, I began full time on the road taking over from my father (Rusty) in 2021. I was more or less born into the Industry and fell in love with it while growing up, between helping on the weekends at Fairs and working with my father in our shop after school. I am excited to be working along side many of our Industries’ leaders and pioneers. I am continuously learning new things and love being able to continue my family’s legacy.

My mother (Norine) continues as Acting Secretary / Treasurer from our home in Tampa while my father and I are on the road. My twin brother (Russell) has a career in medical software and takes vacation time to assist us at some of our larger events.

What do you enjoy most about the Industry?

I love the freedom and flexibility this lifestyle provides. Being able to produce a good income and have time to enjoy life in the off season.

Since 2017 I believe. My father, Rusty Groscurth, was the one who recruited me.

My father is still active in the business, providing support while on the road and at home.

The use of credit cards and online portals at Fairs has exponentially increased since I started. This is absolutely the way of the future for efficiency and being a younger member of the Industry, I am excited to see how the longer term effects impact our business.

Buster Pruett, National Account Sales Manager, Pepsi Hello NICA Members!

I appreciate this opportunity to tell you a little about myself. My journey into the beverage industry started right out of high school in central New York. I didn’t take the traditional college route—I went straight into the workforce, building pallets for delivery trucks at a beer distributor in Syracuse. From there I moved into sales, gaining firsthand experience in the Beverage business and learning how the Industry operates from the ground up.

In 2008, during the economic downturn, I relocated to Florida to help support my father and began searching for new opportunities.

In 2009, I joined PepsiCo as a merchandiser, stocking shelves in stores like Publix, Walmart, and Winn-Dixie. Over the years, I worked my way through a number of roles—sales representative, energy sales specialist, delivery supervisor, safety manager, and sales manager.

Today, I serve as a National Account Sales Manager, where I work with associations like NICA and help support operators across the country in the recreation and retail space.

Outside of work, I enjoy scuba diving, mountain biking, camping, and giving back through community service, with the Youth Crisis Center in Jacksonville and help organize participation in Breast Cancer Awareness events each year.

Supporting others is something that has always been important to me.

One of my primary goals in working with NICA Members is to make the process of working with Pepsi easier and more efficient than it has been in the past. Members often reach out asking how to sign up, how rebates work, or how to connect with their local Pepsi 24 April / May 2026 NICA News

representatives. NICA has done a great job communicating the opportunity, and my focus is on ensuring the backend processes work smoothly so NICA Members receive the support they deserve—whether that involves product access, equipment service, pricing support, or rebate processing.

Another key goal is expanding the value of the program. Historically, rebates have focused primarily on fountain beverages, but many Concessionaires purchase large quantities of bottled and canned products throughout the year. I’m working toward expanding rebate opportunities to include more packaged products—everything from bottled beverages to sports drinks and other Pepsi brands—so NICA Members can benefit from more of the products they already use in their operations.

Even small rebates on bottled and canned beverages can add up over the course of a season and help offset operating costs.

Beyond beverages, I’m also interested in sharing ideas that can help Concessionaires expand their menus and increase revenue. One example that has been gaining popularity in recent years is the “Walking Taco.” This concept uses snack-size chip bags—often Doritos or Fritos—as the base for a portable meal. Vendors can add seasoned meat, lettuce, tomatoes, and other toppings directly into the bag, creating a convenient handheld dish that customers can enjoy while walking through the Fairgrounds.

Ideas like this combine convenience with creativity and are a great fit for the fast-paced environment of Fairs and Festivals. My goal is

to help connect NICA Members with culinary insights and product opportunities that can help them continue innovating their menus.

One of the most valuable experiences for me so far was attending NICA Marketplace. I’ve been around Fairs and Festivals for years, and I thought I had a good understanding of how Concessionaires operate. NICA Marketplace gave me a much deeper appreciation for the complexity of what NICA Members do.

Many Operators travel long routes across multiple states, moving from Fair to Fair throughout the season. They often arrive shortly before an event begins and must set up utilities, equipment, and operations in a very short window before opening the next day.

Learning about those logistical challenges really reinforced how important it is for suppliers like Pepsi to be reliable partners.

If Beverage Service becomes another obstacle during that critical setup time, then we’re not doing our job as partners. My goal is to ensure that working with Pepsi is seamless so Operators can keep their focus on serving their customers.

I also really enjoyed the roundtable discussions and educational sessions at Marketplace. The speed-round conversations gave everyone the opportunity to share ideas and learn from each other, and I found the sessions—ranging from public speaking to Concession Trailer design—both interesting and informative. I’m looking forward to returning again and continuing those conversations.

Members no longer need to submit invoices or paperwork to receive rebates—the reporting is handled digitally. Currently, rebates are reconciled after the end of the program year, with payments typically issued within about 90 days after the close of the year. As we move forward with an updated agreement, there may be improvements to the system and additional opportunities for NICA Members to benefit.

If you walked past the “Getting to Know AI” workshop at the NICA Business Expo this year, you probably noticed something unusual.

People had their phones out. Not scrolling. Taking photos of prompts. Comparing results. If you stepped into the workshop, you could hear Vendors sharing what they were discovering in real time. People leaning against the walls. A few folks poking their heads in from the hallway trying to see what was going on.

Not bad for a session about Artificial Intelligence at a convention built around Corn Dogs, Lemonade, and Deep Fryers!

That moment told me something important.

People in our Industry are curious. Not just about new food ideas or the next big product. But about technology, too. Especially when it might help them run their businesses a little better.

Before going further, I want to say a quick thank you to the volunteers and staff who put the event together. Anyone who has helped organize an event like that knows how much work happens behind the scenes. I appreciate the invitation to share something new with fellow Concessionaires.

Now let’s talk about AI. There is a lot of hype surrounding artificial intelligence right now. Some people make it sound like magic. Others talk about it as if it is something to fear. From what I have seen so far, the truth sits somewhere in the middle.

AI is powerful in a way most people cannot yet imagine. For those of us old enough to remember Nick White, CCE, West Council, providing some popular AI tools in “Getting to Know AI” at the NICA Business Expo

the early days of the internet, it feels a lot like when the first search engines appeared. Suddenly we had instant access to information that once took hours to find.

Today it seems normal. Entire generations have grown up never knowing life without search engines. AI may follow the same path. Someday people will look back and wonder how we ever worked without it.

However, AI is not magic and it is not a replacement for experience. What it is, when used correctly, is a tool. Another one in the toolbox, and possibly the single most powerful one we will see in our lifetime because of its versatility.

Think of it the same way you would think about a calculator or a spreadsheet. It helps organize ideas. It speeds up certain tasks. Sometimes it sparks a new thought you had not considered before. And this is just scratching the surface—it is all of this and more. For Concessionaires, that can actually be pretty useful.

During the workshop, we focused on practical applications. Not theory. Not futuristic predictions.

Just real things Vendors and our Fair Partners can try today. Brainstorming menu ideas. Writing quick social media posts. Organizing prep lists before a Big Fair run. Simple tasks that eat up time when you are already busy preparing for the season.

One thing about AI becomes clear very quickly.

The results you get from AI depend almost entirely on how you ask the question. In the AI world that question is called a “prompt.” The clearer the prompt, the better the response you’ll receive.

To help people get started, we experimented with prompts during the session. I also shared several cheat sheets through the NICA Peer-toPeer Resource Center at www.nicainc.org/peer. If you were not able to attend, here are two examples you can try. They work with any AI platform, whether you are using a free version (like Gemini) or a paid one (like ChatGPT).

Starter Prompt One Try asking an AI this: “Act as an experienced Fair Food Vendor who understands County Fairs and Festivals. Suggest five menu items that could sell well at a Summer Fair. Include one classic comfort food, one deep fried item, and one dessert that appeals to families.”

This type of prompt gives the AI context. You are telling it who to think like and what kind of ideas you are looking for.

Starter Prompt Two Here is another useful one: “Act as a marketing assistant for a Vendor booth. Write a short social media post announcing that our booth will be at the upcoming Fair. Make the tone friendly, exciting, and focused on families attending the Fair.”

What you get back will not always be perfect.

That is normal. Think of it as a starting point. You adjust it. Add your own voice. Make it yours. Add a little more detail to your prompts and the results usually improve. If not, try again!

One of the best moments happened about halfway through the session. People started showing each other what they were getting back from the prompts. Someone would say, “Look at this!” and pass their phone to the person next to them. Before long, the room turned into a small idea exchange. That is something our Industry has always done well. “Together We Can!” is not just a motto on a banner. It reflects how Concessionaires have operated for generations. We share ideas. We compare notes. We help each other solve problems.

When one of us learns something new and passes it along, everyone benefits.

At the end of the day, we all have the same goal. Deliver the best possible Fair Experience for the Guests walking through those gates. Great food helps. Good service helps. A little innovation now and then does not hurt either. Tools like AI are simply another way to support that process and help us keep raising the bar for the Fair Experience.

Technology will continue to evolve, just like every other tool our Industry has adopted over the years. What will not change is the strength of Concessionaires and our Partners in the Industry, learning from one another and sharing what works.

If your Fair, Association, or Event is exploring how tools like AI can support Vendors and Small Businesses, I am always happy to continue the conversation. The “Getting to Know AI” workshop showed just how quickly people can start using these tools once they see them in action. ▲

Changing Tastes With AI Another AI-related highlight from the NICA Business Expo was from “Changing Tastes of the Fair Guest,” where Beth Buckley, Florida State Fair, shared a series of “Before” and “After” images of Fair Food. She shared, “We’re leveraging the power of AI to enhance the visual quality of our food photography, ensuring every new menu item looks its absolute best. Our goal is to achieve a consistent, high-quality aesthetic without altering the authentic appearance of our Vendors’ creations.” As she put it, it is “subtle refinement, not reinvention,” which included high-quality details, optimized depth of field, cohesive backgrounds, and natural lighting. Her team guides the AI with a clear prompt designed to maintain realism while achieving their desired quality: “Create an image of the following food item shot on a camera, with natural daylight. Realistic photo grain, strong depth of field, food photography, hyper realistic. Place it on a red, white, and blue plaid mat with a plain white background.”

Supporting the Next Generation Lynann Hudson, Director of Agribusiness, Florida State Fair NICA has always talked about supporting their local community. Since their main office is in Central Florida, it so happens that their community includes the Florida State Fair!

The Youth Livestock And Agriculture Programs at the Florida State Fair are designed to give young exhibitors meaningful opportunities to learn, grow, and succeed. One way we support this is through a grant program available to Florida State Fair Youth Livestock Exhibitors who are 14 years old and younger.

Support from partners like NICA plays an important role in making this program possible.

The grant provides designated funds toward the purchase of a registered animal, including Beef and Dairy Cattle ($400), Dairy and Boer Goats ($250), Sheep ($250), and Poultry and Rabbits ($50). This gives exhibitors the opportunity to expand their herd and possibly purchase a purebred animal to show in future events.

Agriculture programs help students develop life skills such as confidence, adaptability, and time management, while also building a strong foundation in science, business, and leadership.

These experiences prepare students not only for agricultural careers, but for success in any postsecondary pathway or profession.

When an organization like NICA supports a young exhibitor’s project animal, it is not just funding an animal—it is investing in a student’s education, character development, and future. This support helps shape confident, capable young people who understand both the responsibilities

and the rewards of agriculture. It means the world to our exhibitors, and they truly appreciate the encouragement and support.

We have absolutely seen how programs like this can influence students’ future plans. Because these exhibitors are younger than 14 years old, this program gives them time to learn, grow, and better understand the opportunities available to them.

Beyond the competition itself, they take away reallife lessons in responsibility, commitment, integrity, problem-solving, and confidence.

Partnerships like the one we share with NICA strengthen the foundation that allows our programs to remain accessible, educational, and impactful year after year. NICA’s participation shows students and their families that they are supported, and that what they are learning will stay with them long after the Fair is over.

Concessionaires also play a very meaningful role in this process. Their participation helps sustain the Florida State Fair and supports the experiences that allow youth to learn, grow, and build a lasting connection to agriculture. It also echoes their commitment at Fairs across the country, supporting programs just like this!

Looking ahead, my hope is that youth agriculture programs at the Florida State Fair continue to grow in both access and impact, giving every student the chance to learn, lead, and succeed beyond the Fair. By investing, mentoring, and staying involved, organizations and individuals in the Fair Industry can continue creating opportunities that help young exhibitors thrive.

I want NICA Members to know that their support reaches far beyond a single project or Fair Season. It means more to these exhibitors than you may ever realize. Having someone believe in them and encourage them to pursue their goals and dreams is truly priceless. Thank you! ▲

Travel Safety Tips

Preparing for Roadcheck & Beyond As Fair Season ramps up across the country, thousands of miles will be traveled by NICA Members hauling Food Trailers, Games, Rides, Merchandise, Supplies, and Equipment from one event to the next. While the excitement of opening day is always rewarding, the journey between spots is just as important as the event itself. Safe travel practices help protect your crew, your equipment, your business, and everyone sharing the road with you.

One of the largest safety initiatives each year is the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) International Roadcheck, taking place this year from May 12–14, 2026. During this 72-hour inspection event, certified inspectors throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico conduct thousands of roadside inspections on commercial vehicles and drivers.

What Is International Roadcheck?

Often referred to as the “DOT Blitz,” International Roadcheck is an annual enforcement and education campaign designed to improve commercial vehicle safety. Inspectors perform the North American Standard Level I Inspection—a detailed 37-step process examining both the vehicle and the driver.

Vehicles that pass inspection without critical violations may receive a CVSA decal valid for up to three months. However, vehicles or drivers with serious violations can be placed out of service immediately until issues are corrected.

What’s the Focus in 2026?

Each year, CVSA highlights specific focus areas.

For 2026, inspectors will pay attention to: • •

ELD tampering or falsification Cargo securement issues

Inspectors will carefully review records of duty status, looking for false entries, improper personal conveyance use, or manipulated Electronic Logging Device (ELD) data. On the vehicle side, they will examine tiedowns, straps, chains, load balance, and other cargo securement methods to ensure loads are safely contained during transport.

For Concessionaires and Commercial Exhibitors, cargo securement is especially important. Whether hauling refrigerated product, fryers, game stock, tents, retail inventory, or support equipment, improperly secured cargo can create dangerous roadway hazards and costly delays. Although it may not affect every driver, you are also encouarged to be informed on the regulations for hours-of-service on your route.

What Was Found in the Last Roadcheck The 2025 International Roadcheck results revealed that inspectors conducted more than 56,000 inspections across North America.

Of those inspections: • • • •

10,064 vehicles were placed out of service 3,342 drivers were placed out of service Vehicle out-of-service rate: 17.9% Driver out-of-service rate: 5.9%

Brake-related violations remained the leading issue, accounting for more than 24% of vehicle out-of-service violations. Tire problems were also among the most common concerns inspectors discovered at over 21%.

On the driver side, hours-of-service violations, false logs, suspended licenses, and missing medical documentation were frequently cited.

The message is simple: many roadside issues are preventable with regular maintenance and preparation.

Pre-Trip Safety Tips for the Fair Industry Road safety is about far more than simply passing an inspection. A strong safety routine helps reduce breakdowns, avoid downtime, protect schedules, and keep everyone safer throughout the season. Before heading to your next spot, consider these important travel safety reminders.

Inspect Tires Thoroughly Check tread depth, tire pressure, sidewalls, valve stems, and lug nuts before every major move. Tire failures remain one of the most common roadside violations and can quickly create dangerous situations.

Pay Close Attention to Brakes Listen for unusual sounds, inspect brake lines and chambers, and address any warning signs immediately. Brake violations continue to top the out-of-service list year after year.

Verify Lights and Signals Take a few extra minutes to test brake lights, turn signals, flashers, marker lights, and reflectors.

Lighting issues are easy to overlook but commonly cited during inspections.

Secure Cargo Properly Use appropriate tiedowns and confirm that all equipment, stock, tanks, generators, and loose items are properly secured before travel. Recheck loads periodically throughout long trips, especially after rough roads or weather.

Keep Documentation Organized Drivers should have current licenses, medical cards, registrations, insurance paperwork, permits, and ELD records readily accessible. Organized paperwork can help inspections move more smoothly and reduce stress roadside.

Review Hours of Service Carefully Fatigue remains one of the greatest hazards on the road. Make sure logs are accurate, drivers are rested, and schedules allow adequate time for safe travel between events.

Build Extra Time Into Your Route One of the biggest challenges during Fair season is tight scheduling. Leaving additional travel time helps reduce speeding, rushed decisions, and driver fatigue. Arriving safely is always more important than arriving a little earlier.

Safety Beyond Roadcheck While International Roadcheck only lasts three days, safe operating practices matter every day of the season. Long hours, changing weather, unfamiliar routes, late-night tear-downs, and quick turnarounds can all create additional stress for Fair Industry operators.

Creating a culture of safety within your operation helps protect your family, employees, and livelihood. Small habits—daily inspections, proper rest, regular maintenance, and good communication—often make the biggest difference over the course of a long season.

Monica Passfield, Monica Passfield Concession When I boarded the plane for Las Vegas to attend the NICA Marketplace Conference, I honestly had no idea what to expect. I’d been fortunate enough to be selected as a First-Timer Convention Scholarship Recipient, recommended by my Aunt Carmel Dyer, and attend the event.

While I knew it would be valuable, I didn’t realize just how passionate, and genuinely welcoming this community would be.

From the moment I arrived at registration, it was clear that NICA is more than just a conference, it’s a community of people who truly love what they do. Check-in was seamless, smiles, conversation, hugs, and laughing were everywhere, and there was a sense of shared purpose in those attending.

The opening session set the tone for the entire event. The current leadership team delivered a heartfelt welcome that was equal parts professional and personal. They didn’t just talk about NICA as an organization; they recognized the people behind it which included the Concessionaires, Suppliers, Partners, and Members who make these events possible.

time, ideas, and hard work to support the Industry. As a First-Time Attendee, that acknowledgement made me feel like I wasn’t just a guest, I was joining a community.

One of the standout sessions for me was on using AI for business presence and customer generation. I went in curious, knowing I already use AI and ChatGPT regularly at work, but I’d never considered the concepts they introduced.

It completely shifted my thinking. The presenter broke AI down into simple, practical tools, and I left genuinely excited about how I can apply them moving forward, which is exactly what you hope to get from a conference.

More importantly, all the content across the three days was genuinely relevant to how we run our businesses. Every topic was grounded in the realities of Fair Life, with speakers sharing real stories, real numbers, and practical lessons, not theories. The Panels, Roundtables, and Open Discussions were what I enjoyed most, giving us the chance to learn directly from each other.

More than any single session or speaker, what stayed with me was the passion. Everyone I met, from long time Concessionaires to Fair Managers, and fellow First-Time Attendees all spoke with a genuine love for the Industry. It reminded me why we work those long hours and do what we do, and how important it is to keep learning and growing a business and as a person, and it left me energized.

Overall, the experience gave me new ideas and practical tools I’ve already started using, which is the true measure of a valuable conference.

For anyone considering attending the next NICA Marketplace, especially if you’re wondering whether it’s worth the time and travel, my advice is to go. Whether you’re just starting out, evolving your business or looking for fresh inspiration, NICA offers a blend of community, learning, and practical insight that’s hard to find elsewhere.

the NICA Marketplace convention in Las Vegas.

I was nominated as a First-Time Attendee by my Aunt Carmel Dyer, who I have worked with my whole life, and I was grateful to be able to come along with my Sister Monica. Even after working in the Industry for so long, this conference was something completely new for me and I’m really glad I got to experience it.

I attended a lot of sessions over the three days. Not all were directly relevant to what I do, but I still learned something in every one of them.

It was good to hear from different speakers, see how other people run their businesses during Fair Season, and meet people who share the same passion for this work.

One of the highlights for me was the NICA Marketplace Trade Show. It was impressive to see so many Industry Partners showcasing the latest products, equipment and ideas. What I found most interesting was meeting suppliers we’ve used for more than a decade, and learning what’s changing in the Industry.

Overall, I thought the conference was great.

It gave me new insights, new connections, and a better understanding of other Fairs and how other Concessionaires think and operate. I’m thankful I had the chance to attend, and especially to experience it with family by my side. Thank you NICA for supporting my attendance and I look forward to 2026. ▲

She received the $4,000 NICA 25th Anniversary Scholarship and is continuing her postgraduate education at the University of Pittsburgh to earn her Master of Science Degree. Ashton shared, “I’m currently pursuing my Master’s in SpeechLanguage Pathology at the University of Pittsburgh.

This scholarship has been an incredible help in reducing financial stress and allowing me to focus on my education and community involvement.

Because of this support, I’m participating in LEND, or Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disorders, volunteering for the Future Healthcare Providers Program, where we introduce students to careers in rehabilitation, and engaging in research, helping me shape my thesis and prepare me to be the best clinician that I can be.

Springtime Gatherings As Winter gave way to longer days, blooming Fair Routes, and the first scents of Kettle Corn in the air, the 2026 Fair Season begins to take shape across the country. Springtime in the Fair Industry is more than just a change in weather—it’s a time of renewal, reunion, and momentum. Even before the calendar officially turned to Spring, NICA Members were already on the road, reconnecting after the off-season, welcoming new faces, and laying the groundwork for the busy months ahead.

These early-season gatherings embody this year’s theme, “Making Connections,” reminding us that every handshake, shared meal, and shared laugh helps strengthen the foundation of our Industry.

Bingo at the California Mid-Winter Fair Kicking off the season, the NICA Pizza Party at the California Mid-Winter Fair on March 12, 2026, brought together a close-knit group of approximately 20 attendees—including Fair Gigi Horowitz, CCE, West Council, was our Bingo Caller

Staff—for an evening centered on connection and camaraderie. In a relaxed and welcoming setting, NICA Members and guests had the opportunity to play bingo, reconnect, share stories, and enjoy pizza together during the early days of the season.

With leadership support from West Council’s Ryan Long, CCE and Gigi Horowitz, CCE, Donna Ruhm, Council Coordinator, and volunteers like Lisa Porcelli, Snax Shack, and David Silvestri, Fun Time Foods. the gathering featured a full slate of engaging activities. Gigi kept the energy high as she led Bingo and guided attendees through door prizes, a 50/50 drawing, and a lively quiz. Generous contributions from Colleen Helm, Helm & Sons— including patriotic decorations, food, beverages, and gift cards—helped create a festive atmosphere.

That shared effort was one of the most memorable aspects of the event, reinforcing the teamwork and resilience that define every NICA Gathering.

Guests enjoyed a Continental Breakfast featuring the always-popular cinnamon rolls from Alexis and Jeff Parkhurst, Old West Cinnamon Rolls, along with fruit, coffee, and juice. The morning also included networking, casual conversations, and a series of prize giveaways, including Vendor-donated items and a 50/50 that added a little extra excitement to the event.

The Breakfast Gathering was organized with the support of dedicated West Council and Commercial Council members and volunteers, including Albert Valadez, Alan and Nathalie Harrington, Alexis Parkhurst, Buffy Altman, and Denise Warner, among others. Eric Wofford, Yuma County Fair Manager, also gave a brief greeting to the attendees, thanking them for their participation in this year’s Fair. “Together We Can!”

Even with the wind, the Yuma County Fair Breakfast Gathering stood as a strong reminder that it’s not about perfect conditions—it’s about people coming together, supporting one another, and continuing to make lasting connections across the Industry.

Fun & Games at the Pima County Fair By mid-April, the energy of the season was in full swing at the Pima County Fair, where 170 attendees gathered on April 14, 2026 at the Cantina, for a lively and unforgettable Pima County Fair Game Night. The late-night setting only added to the excitement, as NICA Members and Industry friends came together in a vibrant, high-energy atmosphere designed for both fun and connection, and a bingo and dining tent adjacent to the Cantina contributed greatly to the evening’s success!

The evening was supported by a strong team of NICA Leadership, including the West Council’s Rodney Fazackerley, CCE, Alan Harrington, and Albert Valadez, and Past Presidents Kim Barr, CCE, Dominic Palmieri, CCE, and Jay Wells, CCE, along with Jacqueline Bradbury, CCE, Past Director. The evening offered a wide range of activities that kept the crowd engaged from start to finish, including

Bingo, which drew more than 120 players with over 15 winners, and both Casual Poker and the High Stakes Texas Hold’em Poker Tournament, attracting over 30 players alone. After an exciting few hours, the tournament culminated in Rodney Fazackerley, CCE, West Council, securing his third consecutive championship title with Chris Miladelaroca, MK Food and Beverage, who came in second. Great job everyone!

Door prizes, a Grand Prize Scooter, won by Ann Perry, and a spirited prize auction led by Dominic Palmeri, CCE, Past President, clearing the table of prizes and prizes he acquired on the spot.
