BRIEF 01. TRANSGRESSIVE FICTION BOARD 1/5 OVERVIEW

The Concept. The basis behind this brief is to promote and inform what Transgressive Fiction is. It is for all of those people who love classic films such as American Pyshco, Fight Club and Requiem for a Dream, and to inform them that they are infact novels. Novels that delve into a whole new world of literacy. I chose novels that became big hits in the film industry, and have decided to re-publish them as part of a collection of novels held by Vintage Publishing, as ‘Vintage Transgressive’. The books are very controversial and deal with many taboo subjects, but often depicts characters feeling confined.

This idea of controversy, has been explored throughout my design although purposefully kept subtle, it is to represent the norms of society.

BRIEF 01. TRANSGRESSIVE FICTION BOARD 2/5 PRODUCT

The Product. I designed on six influential transgressive novels that were made into successful films. Due to the collection I decided to make the designs to a rigid format, the typeface, Goudy Old Style contrasting dramatically with the handwritten scrawled letters integrated in the white, symbolising breaking free of the confinements of society. The colours chosen are there to be bold, and shocking, to go along with the design theme of controversy. Unusual bright colours as novels to attract attention for the designs.

The x’s in the background are there to represent the idea of controversy, explicit nature. Once again kept subtle and not overstating the fact as they are well reknowned works of literacy and not something seedy or cheap, they are well credited novels.

Promoting. Once people have decided to purchase one of these books and if they do not necessarily know what Transgressive Fiction is, I have made it very easy to find out. Doubling up as both a postcard and bookmark, each is different according to the book, and aligns with the design of the book. Each postcard will therefore have part of the book cover design on the front and then the information on what Transgressive Fiction is on the back. This has a different layout of the same information on each postcard, with the only thing that changes is the colour of the title, according to the colour of the book.

Promoting. The collection of books I have designed will be sold and promoted within Waterstone’s, one of the best and only chain bookstores still around. In partnership with Transgressive Fiction, this collection has its own posters which will hang in the shop window and within the actual shop. I have decided to exploit this controversial route which I have been exploring by actually finding quotes from auhtors, publishers, cirtics for example that reprimanded the books. They might either comment in disgust of the book or even rebuke the existence of the novel, due to them being too controversial.

BRIEF 01. TRANSGRESSIVE FICTION BOARD 5/5 PROMOTION

Promoting. To add to the range of promotional material within Waterstone’s branding and retail, I designed this paper bag. The bag will then promote the collection wherever it goes after leaving the shop. I decided to use the same quotes to convey the controversial nature of the books on the bag as I did on the posters. I feel this works well, to get across the idea of the novels. The inside of the bag is covered in the x’s to add quality and consistency within the design. The main brand logos are still featured on the bags to let people know who is involved in the campaign.
