ART
Mike Ricketts So It Goes 20 Mar – 2 May Concerned with specific spaces and histories, Mike Ricketts develops projects that explore the uncertainties and paradoxes of contemporary public space. By asking questions, following unlikely leads and making propositions, Ricketts often runs into such bureaucratic structures as those associated with urban regulation and planning. The day-to-day operation of such structures, both at their fringes and in everyday scenarios, forms the subject and location of his work. This exhibition is rooted in an exploration of the post-war history of Princesshay, Exeter’s main retail centre. Originally constructed by the City Council following the Luftwaffe’s Baedeker air raids of 1942, Princesshay has since been redeveloped by a large commercial property company. After an extended period of exploring and researching this area’s history, collecting stories and meeting those working at this intersection between public and private space, Ricketts presents a series of new works including sculpture, video and various appropriated artefacts.

Paul Carter Hotel Swallows the Workers 15 May - 4 Jul Paul Carter’s sculptural assemblages and immersive installations appear to exist somewhere between an activity of careful and obsessive collage and chaotic, incidental drifts of urban detritus and utilitarian construction materials. Responding to aspects of architectural space and the built environment, the artist’s urgent, functional re-ordering exists in a state of constant contradiction, dereliction and construction. His work is often conceived under the unifying idea that everywhere is a kind of hotel, a place of exchange in which we are both the guests and the workers. Whether considering domestic, commercial or industrial spaces; luxurious splendour or low-rent dereliction, Carter suggests that all architectures are transitory constructs, acting as a functional service provision within our lives. paulcarter-art.com

Germany, Denmark, UK, Norway, Sweden, 2014, 114 mins, Dir. Espen Sandberg, Joachim Rønning
Mon 27 Apr, 7.30pm, £5
A gripping re-telling of Norwegian ethnographer Thor Heyerdahl’s 1947 adventure across the Pacific Ocean on a balsa wood raft. This astonishing mission, which lasted 101 days, set out to prove his unpopular theory that the South Sea Islands could have been settled by ancient South Americans from thousands of miles to the east. Shipwrecks, sharks, storms and fears of water challenge the crew throughout their journey, but the stubborn determination of Heyerdahl wills them to battle through. A remake of the famous 1951 Academy awardwinning documentary of the expedition, this film is the first piece of Norwegian cinema to be nominated for both an Oscar and a Golden Globe.
USA/Japan, 2014, Dir. David Zellner
Layered with reflective comment upon moviewatching and popular culture, this indie film presents an eccentric tale of discovery, adventure and obsession. A jaded Japanese woman discovers a hidden copy of Fargo (1996) on VHS, believing it to be a treasure map indicating the location of a large case of money. Set to a Sundance award winning score Kumiko leaves Tokyo for the icy landscapes of North Dakota to track down the mythical treasure.

New neighbour Fred reveals her sensitive side and turbulent past as they fall in love against the backdrop of 1960’s Manhattan.

Director Vallee (Dallas Buyers Club) unpicks this real-life, heart-wrenching narrative via flashbacks and visually engaging montages, to devastating effect.
The Theory of Everything (12A) Mon 29 Jun, 7.30pm, £5
When Sarah (a young Sarah Connolly) accidently wishes her baby brother away, she becomes embroiled in a magical rescue mission through the Goblin King’s (Bowie) maze of mystical creatures. Join a post-screening debate to discuss Henson’s fantastical worlds, the imaginative creations of the films legendary puppet-maker Brian Froud and the film’s impact on a whole generation.
Le Jour Se Lève Mon 11 May, 7.30pm, £5 France, 1939, Dir. Marcel Carné
Celebrating its 75th anniversary last year, Le Jour se Lève demonstrates the best of 1930’s French poetic realism. Effectively evoking the heavy pre-war foreboding of France at the time, the film follows Francois (Jean Gabin, La Grande Illusion), a desperate killer who barricades himself in his apartment, wanted by armed police for murder. A discussion of French cinema after the film will explore the turbulent release and re-release of the film and its socio-political pre-war context. We’ll also be delving into other famous French titles, looking at visual styles and directorial successes throughout the ages.
UK, 2014,123 mins, Dir. James Marsh
Featuring a Golden Globe-winning performance from Eddie Redmayne as astrophysicist Stephen Hawking, one of the world’s greatest living minds.
Twelve Monkeys
After falling in love with fellow Cambridge student Jane Wilde, Hawking is diagnosed with motor neurone disease at just 21 years old. Despite this earth-shattering news, Hawking, supported tirelessly by Jane, embarks on his most ambitious scientific work – A Brief History of Time. Directed by Man on Wire’s James Marsh, this biopic presents an affective story of love, science, life and determination in the face of tragedy.
USA, 129 mins, 1995, Dir. Terry Gilliam
‘An inspiring look at an extraordinary life’ EMPIRE
Mon 8 Jun, 7.30pm, £5 Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt star in Gilliam’s intense dystopian science fiction nightmare, a world where a lethal, unknown and uncontainable virus has already wiped out 5 billion people. James Cole (Willis) is sent back in time to nip the plague in the bud, where his frantic warnings of the future get him imprisoned in a psychiatric facility. Referencing La Jetee, the experimental short film that inspired Twelve Monkeys, the post-screening discussion will focus on the stylistic approaches employed by Gilliam as well as themes of time travel, crime, morality and disease.
