Niagara USA: the Past.

Get drawn to the edge of history! Niagara Falls State Park, the oldest state park in the nation and host to over eight million visitors a year, is a place not only rich in beauty but also rich in history. Niagara Falls was significant to the Native people thousands of years before the European settlers arrived in 1678 when Father Louis Hennepin as part of the LaSalle Expedition was the first to see and record a description of the Falls. As the country expanded westward, Niagara Falls and the portage was an important passage for travelers and goods and it was a hotbed of activity during the French and Indian War and the War of 1812. In 1860, The Free Niagara Movement with leaders including renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted was the impetus for the larger concept of preserving open space and in 1885 the Niagara Appropriation Bill created the

10

Niagara Reservation, now known as Niagara Falls State Park. Millions have been drawn to the edge of the Falls not only to experience their beauty but to harness their power. In 1896, Nikola Tesla and George Westinghouse created alternating current electricity and up until becoming a state park in 1885, the banks along the rapids and Lower River were littered with industry,

factories and amusement parks. History continues to be made. Nik Wallenda famously walked across the Horseshoe Falls on a tightrope in 2012 and the park is currently undergoing the largest restoration in its history. As we celebrate 130 years of history, we truly hope that you will also create your own special memories and history here as well.

Niagara USA: the Future.

The future looks bright Niagara USA is seeing a renaissance! Tourism is the second largest industry in Niagara County, next to agriculture, and continues to grow. Since 2003, the destination has experienced an increase in hotel occupancy and has seen ground broken on many of the new properties that are planned. Niagara USA also has new product and competitive opportunities that is exposing the county for great potential in the current tourism climate. Most recently, a $150 million redevelopment, part of the Buffalo Billion initiative, will transform the former Rainbow Centre Mall into a year-round destination for visitors. A public-private partnership between New York State, Uniland Development Company and Delaware North Companies is expected to be a project that transforms downtown Niagara Falls and will be a catalyst for guests to extend their stays. “Wonder Falls” Resort will be family-friendly and include a hotel, themed restaurants, an indoor water park and other familyoriented entertainment activities. In addition to new hotels, more products are being offered on the Niagara Wine Trail USA; the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute is now an anchor

on Old Falls Street, and there has been steady growth of the seasonal Lockport Community Market, near the new Lake Effect Artisanal Ice Cream on the banks of the historic Erie Canal. Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls USA has just renovated and expanded by adding an additional 175,000 square feet with 50 new stores including American Eagle, Disney, Kenneth Cole, Swarovski, White House Black Market and many others. This catapults Fashion Outlets into one of the largest outlet malls in the country. Additionally, the Niagara Aerospace Museum, Niagara Jet Adventures, and Smokin Joes Native Center are welcoming guests year-round. The Maid of the Mist is now also setting sail from the site of the former Schoellkopf Power Station.

ice arena. Cornerstone CFCU Arena is changing the face of downtown Lockport for the better. The 93,500 square feet state-of-theart facility hosts two NHL-size rinks with the highest quality ice on the market. The arena is the home of Lockport Express, a Junior A hockey team that plays in the Northern States Hockey League (NA3EHL). Major tournaments are already scheduled in the new downtown arena with many more on the horizon. In addition to the rinks, the facility includes a performance-training center, tenant space, a skate shop, concessions area and a community room to support the 150,000 visitors expected to enter the arena each year. Both rinks are also sled hockey accessible and will be available for programs. Come see the new Niagara USA, log onto niagara-usa.com and plan a visit.

Niagara USA sees eight million visitors every year who want to experience our iconic Wonder of the World, Niagara Falls, located inside Niagara Falls State Park. Niagara Falls State Park is the oldest state park in the United States, designed by famed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. On newly renovated Goat Island, inside Niagara Falls State Park, the Cave of the Winds attraction has welcomed visitors for many decades. UNIQUEFALLS In January 2014 Niagara Falls became a picture postcard when the landscape became a blanket of snow and ice, which coated everything from the railings to the trees. Despite popular belief, Niagara Falls did not completely freeze over but it did become an icy spectacle – receiving worldwide media attention and trending on social media. This arctic blast of cold weather that became known as the weather system “Polar Vortex,” sent temperatures plunging across the United States for one week but visitors were not afraid to take in this once-in-lifetime sight. Feeling the rush of the mighty Niagara Falls, it’s difficult to imagine any force strong enough to stop the thunderous rush of water, yet in 1848 Mother Nature did.

In March of that year the Upper Niagara River (also known as a strait) dried-up when high winds set the ice field of Lake Erie in motion and millions of tons of ice became lodged at the source of the river, blocking the channel completely until finally a shift of forces released it and the weight of the water broke through. The Upper Niagara River experienced an ice jam again in 2014 during the “Polar Vortex,” caused by freezing conditions. The unexpected amounts of ice caused flooding on Grand Island and Cayuga Island in Niagara Falls.

The day they shut off Niagara In 1969 the Army Corps of Engineers dammed the waters of Niagara Falls so they could inspect and fix an erosion issue.

The snow and ice remained past our winter into the spring/early summer allowing visitors to see the effects of this weather phenomenon.

‘To Niag’ra

in a sleeper...

there’s no honeymoon that's cheaper’! “Shuffle off to Buffalo,” 42nd Street

For hundreds of years, couples from around the world have made their way to Niagara Falls to celebrate their love. Niagara Falls earned its title as the “honeymoon Capital of the World” in the early 1800s when some of the more rich and famous began traveling to Western New york. Former Vice President of the United States Aaron Burr’s daughter Theodosia, spent her honeymoon in Niagara Falls in 1801, and in 1804, Jerome Bonaparte, Napoleon’s brother is said to have travelled by stagecoach to honeymoon in Niagara Falls. When the Erie Canal opened in 1825, connecting the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean via the Hudson River, suddenly Niagara Falls was a lot more accessible to many people. Couples were drawn not only to the thundering waters of these magnificent waterfalls but also to Niagara Falls State Park, established in 1885, and its many secluded green areas and paths. Niagara Falls State Park is the oldest state park in the United States and is home to the same breathtaking views of the awe-inspiring waterfalls that lovers have seen for centuries.

Today, many young couples choose to honeymoon here because it’s the spot where their parents or grandparents have enjoyed decades before them. Niagara USA is impressive on so many fronts. At the top of the list are its natural resources.

Kayaking the Erie Canal

Snowshoeing at Wilson Tuscarora State Park

The thundering waters of Niagara Falls, dividing a river above and below, are the connection between two Great Lakes – Erie and Ontario. Throw in the Erie Canal and the area is surrounded by some of the best fishing waters in the world – offering a diverse smorgasbord of species: salmon, trout, bass, muskellunge, pike, perch and so many more. The best thing about these angling opportunities is that they exist year-round! Whether it’s the magnificent scenery of the Lower Niagara River, the tantalizing setting of 18 Mile Creek and Burt Dam or the grandeur of a Lake Ontario sunrise or sunset as you check out big water fishing for salmon and trout – pick and choose where and when to fish with family and friends. There’s a reason that Olcott Beach in Niagara USA was named the Ultimate Fishing Town by the World Fishing Network in 2012 – the fishing adventures offered here are really that good! For derby winning fish, Lake Ontario out of the ports of Youngstown, Wilson or Olcott is the place to be – especially in the spring and summer when salmon and trout

are heavily influenced by the flow of the Niagara River current. The area also offers some excellent shore fishing options in the river or in the smaller tributaries off Lake Ontario. Order a copy of the Greater Niagara Fishing and Outdoor Guide to map out your next angling and/or outdoor experience from niagara-usa.com. You can also call the Niagara County Fishing Hotline at 877-FALLS US for weekly reports on the fishing. Fishing isn’t the only natural resource that outdoors enthusiasts take advantage of. Birders flock to the Niagara River – recognized globally as an Important Bird Area – through all four seasons. Water birds in the system every winter are mindboggling. Nearby Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge is also a huge birding attraction every spring and fall, worth a trip to the “swamps.” Let’s not forget hiking and biking either. The Erie Canal and the Niagara River corridor are both excellent locations for riding a bike, with plans underway to expand and connect the full canal trail from the towpath in Lockport to the Niagara River. Hiking into the Niagara Gorge helps give you a much better appreciation for Niagara Falls as you witness first-hand how Mother Nature has carved out a path into history. Remember power boating, sailing, canoeing and kayaking in Niagara USA. Whether it’s the Erie Canal, the Niagara River or the harbors of Wilson and Olcott, it’s a perfect way to get upclose and personal with our invigorating waters. Niagara USA is an outdoor playground that is second to none!

Cory Schmidt, North American Fishing Club: “Where the Lower Niagara River makes its final fourteen-mile downhill rush from the legendary Falls and into Lake Ontario, this formidable, occasionally terrifying mass of moving water draws an amazing abundance of sport fish. Autumn through winter, waves of magnificent king salmon, pods of bullish brown trout, plus free-ranging steelhead, walleyes and monster muskies create one of the most impressive freshwater fisheries on the planet.” – Oct. 2014, “Niagara Bronze” article North American Fisherman

Mike and Sharon Murphy, owners of the Lockport Locks & Erie Canal Cruises, recently added the “Lockview VI” paddle driven vessel to enhance their attraction. a Navy destroyer, as well as two decks, two restrooms and one fully stocked bar. Still, the most unique feature of the boat are the large paddles. “The renovations we made significantly enhanced the quality of this magnificent vessel and showcase the exquisite paddles that everyone loves to look at during the ride,” Mike Murphy said. Since the Lockview VI began its operation at the attraction last summer, there have been several events held on the Mississippi-style paddle-powered boat. The vessel is available for private charters, weddings and some daily cruises. For more information about the Lockport Locks & Erie Canal Cruises, visit lockportlocks.com or call 716-433-6155.

OurWorld ofWine What’s trending on the Niagara Wine Trail USA

With New york State being named wine region of the year by “Wine enthusiast” magazine in 2014, and as gov. andrew Cuomo continues his support with advancements in legislation, it’s apparent how much the wine industry is starting to impact the Niagara USa region. An all-around American wine, Baco Noir can be found at Midnight Run Wine Cellars located in Ransomville, N.Y. Baco Noir is handpicked by family at their vineyards in Cambria, N.Y. The wine maker Michael Palczynski takes great strides to baby it. Baco Noir is something special on its own as most wine makers use it in a blend. At Midnight Run Wine Cellars you will hear them say “it is made with love!” Baco Noir makes for a nice change of pace as it is lighter in body, fruity, peppery, and acidic. Baco Noir is paired well with grilled lamb or beef ribs barbecued. For a true Baco Noir treat, serve with homemade pizza and Buffalo chicken wings! At Arrowhead Spring Vineyards, the land behind the name has a sacred past. An ancient Native American tool-making site was

discovered in the early 1980s when Rt. 93 (Town Line Rd.) was constructed to what it is today. The University of Buffalo’s Department of Archaeology did a site dig and discovered the remains of a fire-pit that was carbon dated to 2000 B.C. “Arrowhead” honors these ancient craftsmen. “Spring” is because of the number of natural springs of fresh water that weep from the Niagara Escarpment. Walking up to the tasting room at A Gust of Sun Winery & Vineyard, guests won’t miss the famous faces of Cody, Abbey & Jewell. Two of the bottles, Three Westies White and Sweet Westies White are named after the owners’ three dogs. Along those same lines, their Cody, Abbey, & Jewel Cab Franc were each made with different yeast and oak treatments to match the flavor of the

wines with the personalities of the dogs. Their Red, White, & Blue Jazz Trio Three Pack features local artwork with $1 from each three pack donated to WNY Heroes, a local veterans organization. They also donate $1 from every bottle of their Dry and Sweet Diamond wines to Diamonds in the Ruff Animal Rescue in Lockport, N.Y. They actually started making this wine just to help support them. Schulze Vineyards & Winery pours their Thirty Mile Point Niagara, named for Thirty Mile Point Lighthouse in Somerset, N.Y., where owner Ann Schulze’s greatgrandparents were light keepers. For a complete list of award winning Niagara USA wines, visit niagarawinetrail.org/awards. Information about New York State gold medal award wines visit newyorkwines.org/NYGold.

Just a taste!

On the Niagara Wine Trail USA new grape varietals are being grown as unique bottles are corked, and this youthful trail grows stronger roots and expands into 22 wineries in 2015.

Welcome to Western New York. Beyond the Falls.

“Regionally Speaking” Niagara is home to a wonder and much more. Just outside of the county is a region full of adventure, culture, and history. There are exciting things to do and see, from art, to amusement parks, architecture, unique eats, and more. At Letchworth State Park hiking and bike trails connect 600-foot cliffs along a 17-mile gorge. Go whitewater rafting, kayaking or camping, or for an even more memorable experience, take a hotair balloon ride over this “Grand Canyon of the East.” About 45 minutes from Niagara Falls is Darien Lake, a theme park featuring wild coasters, waterslides and a thrilling tower ride. An action packed pyrotechnics show dazzles at night and don’t miss the popular concert series every summer.

Embrace Buffalo’s cultural treasures, including Frank Lloyd Wright’s Darwin Martin House, the Burchfield-Penney Art Center and the Albright-Knox Gallery. Take a stroll through the hip and trendy Elmwood Village, and stop in at one of the many quaint shops or eateries. Visiting June to August? Don’t miss the largest garden tour in the United States – Garden Walk Buffalo, part of the acclaimed National Buffalo Garden Festival, a five-week-long garden party, featuring 14 gorgeous garden tours. A trip to Buffalo wouldn’t be complete without sampling regional specialities at the historic Broadway Market, or wings at the Anchor Bar, home to the original recipe.
