A TRAVELER’S REVIEW

Sheraton At The Falls, Niagara Falls USA “Awesome Place to Stay” My husband and I stayed a night in December for our honeymoon. We were very pleased with the hotel! It was very clean, everyone was so friendly and helpful, the room was comfy cozy and very nice. It’s in the perfect location with many things to do within walking distance. The casino right across street and TGI Fridays is right inside hotel. It’s also a very kid friendly place with an arcade in it. We would deenitely stay there again.

GETTING ALL

MISTY-EYED

“We’re going on a family adventure to Niagara Falls.” rom the blank stares my kids were giving me, you would think that I was speaking a foreign language. One of them was still wearing her headphones and the other was gazing a little too longingly at his paused video game, so I decided to make my declaration one more time.

“MY CHILDREN WERE TOTALLY TRANSFIXED BY THE VIEW BEFORE THEM.” This time I was met by a storm. “Who goes to the Falls?” “Aren’t we a little old?” “There’s nothing to do there.“ I had a secret weapon though. We weren’t just taking a family trip to Niagara Falls. We were going on the Maid of the Mist. Again, I was met with blank stares but I wasn’t worried. The Maid of the Mist was ranked #1 on U.S. News & World Report’s list of Best Things to Do in Niagara Falls.

Starting from the dock, a very knowledgeable tour guide gave us a brief history of the Falls. It was enlightening and I wanted him to talk more, but soon realized that talking would be a waste of breath. You see, as the boat cruises past the Bridal Veil and American Falls, it veers into the curve of the Horseshoe and the experience dominates your senses. There was the thunder of rushing water crashing on the rocks below. There was the full on mist blasting you in the face sending shivers down your spine. Then there was the sight of the Falls itself. Rising out of the mist like a giant white wall, it towers over you letting you know that no matter how important we think we are as a species, we are little things compared to the true awesomeness of nature. I broke my gaze away for a moment to check in with my kids and was rewarded with an even more beautiful sight; my children were totally transfixed by the view before them. They were immersed in the experience. It was as if their earlier cynicism had been swept away by the rapids and they were kids again—free to be amazed and enchanted by the world around them. When we got back to the dock I asked how they enjoyed it. “It was cool”, was the response, but the gleam in their eyes gave them away. As for me, I got a little misty-eyed. maidofthemist.com

Move Through History on the Erie Canal As you settle in your seat aboard Lockport Locks & Erie Canal Cruises, you’re ready for a leisurely cruise through the Erie Canal. As the boat pulls away from the dock and begins traversing its way through the Locks, you realize you’re actually winding your way through history. Hand dug in the early 1800s to connect the Hudson River to the Niagara River, the Erie Canal was going to be the preeminent engineering feat of the century—but there was one big “if”. The 60-foot rise of the Niagara Escarpment posed a major obstacle to progress. The solution was found in a double set of combined stone locks. Each lock measured 90 by 15 feet and made passage through the Canal possible. This unique two hour cruise includes “locking through” and being raised the 49-foot elevation of the Niagara Escarpment (the same one that creates Niagara Falls) in the only double-set of locks on the Erie Canal. You will pass under bridges that raise straight up, see water cascade over Lockport’s famous “Flight of Five” 1840s locks, and travel through the solid walls of the “rock cut” as your Coast Guard licensed captain describes the architecture, sights and folklore along the way. lockportlocks.com

Spelunking Lockport

For a unique perspective on historic Lockport, take a tour of the Lockport Cave & Underground Boat Ride. Constructed in 1838, you’ll view ruins from the industrial revolution, walk through a water tunnel that was blasted out of solid rock, view stalactites, flow stone, various geological formations and artifacts left behind in the underground caves by the men who built the tunnel in the early days of the Erie Canal. lockportcave.com

POWER TRIP The New York Power Authority (NYPA) is in the midst of a concentrated effort to significantly increase its wattage as a major Niagara USA tourist attraction. They are embarking on renovations that will see all new exhibits which will deliver the historical significance of the Power Authority in a fun and intriguing way. On educational content alone, the Power Authority provides a big jolt to visitors. Step into the Niagara Power Vista, NYPA’s state-of-the-art visitor center, and you quickly discover that you have walked into the birthplace of hydroelectricity. The Niagara Power Vista offers over 50 interactive exhibits to teach students young and old about electricity and how the Power Authority played an important part in the development of the Niagara region. One of the exciting new exhibits making its debut in 2016 will be a motion simulator ride that replicates the journey of a single drop of water through the plant and its subsequent transformation into energy. An interactive kiosk linked to a solar array on the roof provides real-time data and information about solar energy technology. The Electric Lab offers a hair-raising experience with a Van de Graaff. There’s even something for art lovers in the form of a restored seven-foot-tall mural done by American artist Thomas Hart Benton depicting Father Louis Hennepin’s discovery of the Falls in the 17th century. nypa.gov/vc/niagara.htm

In 2016, the New York Power Authority will debut many new interactive exhibits as part of its multi-million dollar renovation.

Open year-round, the New York Power Authority— Niagara Power Vista provides a surge of excitement for each and every visitor. Make sure to put it on your list of must-see places in Niagara USA.

CURIOUS A trip through the looking glass at the Aquarium of Niagara

Just an eight-minute walk from the Falls, you’ll find a different world. One filled with fantastic creatures that you would swear sprung from a child’s imagination. It’s called the Aquarium of Niagara. “I love seeing a child’s eyes light up when he or she finds ‘Nemo’ swimming in our tanks and they realize he does exist.” Gay Molnar has been working at the Aquarium for 20 years now and for the last three has been its Executive Director. She knows that what makes this such a special place for visitors and employees alike is the connection you make with the animals on exhibit. The Aquarium features special interactive programs designed to bring you into their world. Visitors can experience

firsthand what goes into taking care of the animals and can relate with them on a truly personal level. From learning the quirks of a Humboldt penguin to having fun with the always happy-go-lucky seals, you’ll come away from your visit not only with some incredible memories but also a friend or two. “All of our animals have very strong personalities”, says Gay with a twinkle in her eyes. aquariumofniagara.org

Road Trip to Family Fun Riviera Theatre & Performing Arts Center Built in 1926, the historic Riviera Theatre in North Tonawanda was billed as “The Showplace of the Tonawandas.” The first film shown there was “Upstage” starring Norma Shearer and patrons were treated to Fred Meyer accompanying the film on the Riviera’s showpiece organ, the Mighty Wurlitzer. Over the past 80 years, the Riviera has played host to Vaudeville, musicals, and national recording artists, all who have been inspired by the majesty and grandeur of the theatre. rivieratheatre.org

At the Corner of Excitement and Fun No place quite captures the energy of Niagara USA like Old Falls Street. In the heart of Niagara’s entertainment district, there’s always something happening along its three-block stretch. From seasonal vendors to concerts and festivals, Old Falls Street has something for the entire family. fallsstreet.com

Go Round and Round...Through History American history has never been so much fun. Located in North Tonawanda, the Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum is a testament to the wonder of a bygone era. In fact, almost half of the hand carved wooden carousels still working in the U.S. and Canada can trace their origins to the Herschell Carrousel Factory. The museum features two working carousels and the brand new Kiddieland Testing Park Exhibit, making it a must-see for families. carrouselmuseum.org

Landing on Boardwalk Like a true beacon, Olcott’s famous lighthouse, the Olcott Light, illuminates the way to the quaint little hamlet of Olcott Beach, nestled in the Town of Newfane. Winding its way along the picturesque shores of Lake Ontario, the Boardwalk takes you back to when family time was never rushed and always treasured. From locally-owned shops and eateries to unique events like the Olcott Pirate Festival, everything has a distinctive flavor that is unlike anything

else in the region. The crown jewel of the boardwalk is the Olcott Beach Carousel Park featuring a vintage 1928-style Herschell-Spillman, two-row carousel. Round and round it goes, spinning you back to simpler and happier times. Come experience the history while staying in our charming cottages. Whether you’re looking to relax and rejuvenate or discover a brand new adventure, Olcott Beach is a timeless destination. olcott-newfane.com

It’s easy to get lost in history at Old Fort Niagara. It’s more than a history lesson, it’s a lesson in what life was like back then. From recruiting children into the army and having them do drills to actual tradesmen like blacksmiths, coopers and trappers applying their trade, authenticity is the trademark of Old Fort Niagara. It rings true in the words of Executive Director Bob Emerson, “When you go out to the French Castle, you’re touching the same stones they touched in the 18th Century.” Old Fort Niagara is open year-round with interactive programs designed to make the most of each season. In the winter, there are snowshoe patrols while actual battles are re-enacted during the summer months. The rich history of the Fort is etched into every stone and it is a surprising one to say the least. As one visitor told Bob, “I learned more history here than I ever did in 12 years of school.” As easy as it is to get lost in time at the Fort, it’s just as easy to get lost in the view. From the top of the redoubts that stand ever vigilant, you can see far and wide across the land—even to Toronto on a clear day. Come for a couple of hours or for the day; time really has no meaning at Old Fort Niagara. oldfortniagara.org

Digging History: Old Fort Niagara is a rich source for the world of Archaeology. During the past 40 years, over 80,000 artifacts have been uncovered, many of which are on exhibit at the Fort’s Visitor Center. One particular discovery led to the settlement of a debate between historians. It seems there was an argument about how an 18th century British infantryman wore his cap. The debate was settled when they found one in an old latrine at the Fort and concluded from its position how it was worn.

Welcome to Bountiful Niagara

Culinary

Becker Farms

It’s amazing how well everything grows in Niagara USA. The perfect convergence of a Lake Ontario driven climate and the nutrient rich soil of the escarpment makes the region a true bonanza for everything from grapes to winter squash. Becker Farms is a shining example of bountiful Niagara. Established in 1894, this fifth generation farm offers the freshest fruits and vegetables. That delicious freshness takes shape in a delectable array of pies, jams, wine, fudge and more. They even have a working vineyard and brewery on premise adding to the flavor of the region. Becker Farms invites guests to pick their own produce and witness firsthand the bond the family has with the land. In fact, over the past few years Becker Farms has adopted a Field-to-Table approach for all its catered events, serving items picked just for the occasion from Becker Farms or from farms within a 100-mile radius. Needless to say, when you come to Becker Farms, you’ll find that what grows the most is your connection to the land. beckerfarms.com Sanger Farms & Bakery

Another prime example of Niagara’s bounty is Sanger Farms in Youngstown. Whether you are seeking crisp apples, juicy peaches, or sweet strawberries, you are sure to find a tasty selection of fruits and vegetables available year-round. sangerfarm.com

Blackman Homestead Farm

Since 1852 to the present, every generation of Blackman has added innovation to the farm operations, keeping it viable and thriving. Today, the result is a modern agriculture operation with roots entrenched firmly in a rich family heritage. The family welcomes guests to come visit a working farm and indulge in some apple picking. While you’re there, you’ll also find specialty products that are the heart and soul of farmer’s markets all over the region. blackmanhomesteadfarm.com

Niagara ou can feel it in the soil. The dolomitic limestone of the Escarpment. The gravel silts of the Ontario lakeshore.

That, combined with a cool climate and a 200-day growing season, makes Niagara USA perfect for growing vinifera grapes. Similar to the Alsace region of France, European wines like Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Vidal Blanc, and Sauvignon Blanc thrive in the wineries along the Niagara Wine Trail, USA. Located between the Niagara Escarpment and Lake Ontario, along some of the most breathtaking scenery you’ll ever visit, each winery puts its own unique stamp on the wine it produces...and welcomes guests with a warm smile and raised glass. Experienced fishermen tend to get a bit excited when they look at a map of Niagara USA. That’s because the first thing that jumps out at them is the mighty Niagara River connecting two Great Lakes, Ontario and Erie. With an abundance of fertile fishing holes, you can find everything from trophy fish like Pacific salmon and trout, to the always feisty smallmouth bass and musky. Whether you’re a sport or fly fisherman, prefer casting from a boat or shore, there is a spot for every fisherman of all ages and skill levels. In fact, the region is so rich as a freshwater fishery that in 2012, the World Fishing Network voted Olcott Beach as “The Ultimate Fishing Town”.

38

Niagara USA offers world-class fishing opportunities and boasts a long list of freshwater fish available year-round. Take your fishing adventure to Niagara USA and satisfy your urge to enjoy the great outdoors. BEYOND THE FALLS isiting Niagara Falls doesn’t have to end at the Gorge. In Niagara USA, we are nestled in the western part of New York State, a region full of adventure, culture and history. Roam Western New York and explore the many museums, architecturally famous structures, delicious dining options, festivals, and more. Guests often discover there is so much to do they have to leave something to come back to. Photo Credit: Joe Cascio Photo Credit: Joe Cascio

Start south in Ellicottville, N.Y., home to Holiday Valley Resort. Skiing abounds in the winter months, but the other times of year also bring fun activities, shopping and restaurants to please everyone. Stroll the main street and soak up the friendliness of a laidback town. Antiques, a microbrewery, galleries and more are in this charming downtown location. Dance the night away or get some rest to hit the slopes in the morning. Don’t bypass Chautauqua Lake, in the center of a community that comes alive with a unique mix of fine and performing arts, lectures, interfaith worship and programs, and recreational activities. The Chautauqua Institution is a beautiful, historic lakeside village that welcome 100,000 visitors of all ages, every season. Western New York borders two Great Lakes—Erie and Ontario, both offering world-class boating and fishing. At Letchworth State Park, hiking and bike trails connect 600-foot cliffs along a 17-mile gorge. Go whitewater rafting, kayaking or camping, or for an even more memorable experience, take a hot-air balloon ride over this “Grand Canyon of the East.”

68

About 45 minutes from Niagara Falls, USA is Darien Lake, a theme park featuring wild coasters, waterslides and a thrilling tower ride. An action packed pyrotechnics show dazzles at night and don’t miss the popular concert series every summer. Just 20 minutes away from the visitor corridor of Niagara Falls, USA is Buffalo, N.Y., a city experiencing a renaissance in its own right. Art enthusiasts should explore the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, a vibrant museum of contemporary and modern art located in the hip Elmwood Village. Buffalo is a recognized city of architectural treasures. Visit Frank Lloyd Wright’s 1904 masterpiece the Darwin Martin House Complex. It would also be impossible to miss one of Wright’s most beloved designs on the shores of the waterfront. Enjoy the beauty of his only rowing boathouse. A trip to Buffalo wouldn’t be complete without sampling regional specialties at the historic Broadway Market, or wings at the Anchor Bar, home to the original recipe.
