Summer Term 2010 Wednesdays – 28 April – 14 July 2010 (except 2nd June) Closing date for applications: 26 March 2010 All sessions will run from 1pm – 4pm at Dewsbury Health Centre. The cost is £210 which includes the photocopiable resource and accreditation fees. Once staff have attended this course they are eligible to attend any of the specialist Elklan courses. This year we are running the following 5/6 week specialist courses: Unclear speech Autistic Spectrum Disorder All courses are accredited (upon successful completion of a portfolio) and credits can be accumulated towards a “Certificate in Speech and Language Support”. It is advisable to book early as places are limited and will be allocated on a “first come, first served” basis. Please note this is the only time that this course is being run this academic year. This course will provide opportunities for you to develop knowledge and practical ideas to promote the communication skills of all secondary school children, but particularly those with speech and language difficulties.
Introduction to course and portfolios What is communication?
Memory and learning
It provides some theoretical knowledge and ideas for practical activities.
Learning styles and motivation
All participants will resource manual.
Understanding words and sentences
The course is accredited through the Open College Network. To gain accreditation (which is optional) it is necessary to compile a portfolio. This involves some time per week reflecting on course sessions and preparing and implementing activities within your setting.

Promoting effective communication & social skills 1. Includes emotional literacy
Promoting effective communication and social skills 2. Includes ASD
Articulation, phonological awareness and spelling
Linking it all together
Other learners will be asked to complete short home tasks to supplement their learning.
