Quote of the
Month “The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear.”
-Buddy the Elf
Azleway is an organization with several locations across the state of Texas that aims to provide hope and opportunity to children at-risk and in crisis. According to their website, “Azleway Children’s Services is currently recruiting foster families to help reduce the number of children waiting for placement. Azleway, Inc. is responding to the needs of these children in crisis by expanding our therapeutic foster care program, providing financial support and intensive training for foster parents.” This holiday season our Key Club adopted two at-risk children under the age of ten, one boy and one girl. With help from every member contributing money, we were able to get the majority of the items on the child’s wish list. Hopefully we were able to bring a little joy into their Christmas, and we cannot wait until we can do it again next year!
VALETS This month we had two valets and they were both huge successes. Valets are a great way for us to get our name out in the community; we are able to make coming and
going from an event as smooth as possible. The first valet was on December 12 at the Pineywoods Country Club for the Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital’s Christmas party. The second valet was on December 14 which was for the SFA Gala. This valet is anticipated to be our biggest one of the year, and this year was not any different.
ESL FIELD TRIP At our high school, we have a program that helps student originally from non-English speaking countries adapt to, not only our language, but our way of life. We refer to these students as ESL, or English as a Second Language. The ESL kids come from all over world: Burma, China, Thailand, Mexico, etc. On December 19, our Key Club officers and sponsor were privileged to be able to participate in a very unique experience. Due to the fact that we meet with the ESL kids every Wednesday, we got invited to go on a field trip with them during which they would explore the city of Nacogdoches and things they will probably never get to experience again. We started our day off at Lamp-lite Theatre, a
local place that puts on plays for the community. After we watched “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever,” we headed downtown so the ESL kids could learn more about the history of Nacogdoches and explore the shops. We finished the day up at Shelley’s bakery, where they got to enjoy food like chilled cheese sandwiches, chicken salad, and quiches (which they had never heard of before, let alone eaten.) Personally, this trip was one for the books. It was so humbling and rewarding to be able to interact with them and show them a little piece of Nacogdoches they did not even know existed.
PANCAKE DINNER Our annual pancake dinner will be Friday, January 24, the night of the guys’ home basketball game against Corsicana. Tickets will be $5 for all you can eat pancakes! This is our major fund raiser of the year so members will be required to sell at least 5 tickets. Start thinking of who you want to sell to because we will begin selling on Monday, January 6.
PAINTED N’S Key Club is responsible for selling the new painted N’s to freshman. So if you are a freshman or know a freshman who wants one please contact an officer or Mrs. Ferrell!
UPCOMING Well guys, it is finally 2014 (the year of my graduation) and I could not be more excited! I know some of you seniors may be tempted to start slacking, but don’t get too tempted! Remember, in order to get your cord for graduation, you need 85 hours! Don’t stress, we will have plenty of service opportunities coming up. Our major focus for January is our Pancake Dinner. You can either sell tickets for hours, help at the actual dinner, or both!
SET SAIL HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE! Remember it is never too late to SET SAIL WITH SERVICE!
Are you the sharpest crayon in the box? Just before Christmas, there was an honest politician, a kind lawyer and Santa Claus travelling in a lift of a very posh hotel. Just before the doors opened they all noticed a $5 bill lying on the floor. Which one picked it up?? Know the answer? Get an hour! Contact an officer!
