Live Auction, and a torchlight snowmobile mascaraed parade are just a few highlighted items listed on the agenda for the weekend (see the Ride-In section of this SnoTraveler for more information). There is truly something for everyone to do at this event. Just spending time with old friends, meeting new friends, supporting your club’s efforts for fundraising for Camp Sno-Mo, or coming to meet some of the families that Camp Sno-Mo has serviced over the years are all good reasons to become a part of this event. For 45 years, NHSA and Easter Seals Camp Sno-Mo have been partnered and for this, we all should be proud of all the efforts that have kept this bond strong and vibrant! Over $3 million raised in 45 years and for this I thank and applaud all the member

clubs, businesses, and volunteers that spend hours hosting spaghetti feeds, turkey suppers, poker runs, silent auctions, raffles, dances, car washes, recycling, and all the other creative fundraising ideas in efforts to raise money to support Camp Sno-Mo. The smiles that Camp Sno-Mo creates on each and every camper’s face are worth every effort we put forth in raising funds. Thank you for all that you do to allow Easter Seal’s children to experience this special place – Camp Sno-Mo! Enjoy winter to the fullest – get out and adventure into the winter wonderland of snowmobiling, visit new areas in the state, explore the Tri-State reciprocity weekend, take advantage of what the industry has to offer! tart your engines – full steam ahead – the winter season is upon us and it is time to get out and take advantage of all that winter and the snowmobile industry has to offer you! Registrations and NHSA membership numbers are surpassing last year’s numbers, so I know that many of you are already out riding the trails. Mother Nature is trying to cooperate – a little rain and a little thaw interrupted the nice base the trails had – but with a little snow dance, the weather seems to be

Vermont – get out and ride the trails safely, lawfully and respectfully. Positive snowmobile activity represented both by numbers of participants and safety to travelers and the trail system during this weekend will support the efforts the agencies have put forth to provide this program to the industry and will promote the program to aid in ensuring longevity. A HUGE celebration is just around the corner for all of you to consider attending: The 45th NHSA Easter Seals RideIn for Camp Sno-Mo! The Ride-In committee is finalizing their preparations for this big celebration which is taking place in Gorham, New Hampshire at the Town & Country from February 3 – February 5. With the Mardi Gras theme of “Let the Good Times Roll,” there are lots of fun activities for everyone at this event – a FIREWORKS display, an adult “costumed” scavenger hunt, a children’s “trinket” treasure hunt, a hypnotic night of comedy, a silent auction, a “Biddin’ it Up”

turning the temps back down, the precipitation is steering away from rain and becoming beautiful white snowflakes again, piling the trails with the snow paths again for our winter travels on snowmobiles. This is the year, if you have not already participated in the past years, to become an explorer and take advantage of a phenomenal opportunity that Fish & Game, Bureau of Trails, legislatures, and the state associations have teamed together to provide to snowmobilers. January 27 – 29 is Tri-State reciprocity weekend – this is a three day open weekend that all snowmobiles legally registered in New Hampshire, Maine or Vermont will be able to operate in the three reciprocal states. All state laws and rules apply regarding the operation of snowmobiles and must be adhered to. Be sure to reference the snowmobiling rules for the states prior to your travels. Support the efforts that the organizations have put forth to make this opportunity available to the snowmobilers of New Hampshire, Maine and

AS THE SNOW FALLS, REGISTRATIONS RISE – According to Fish and Game Major John Wimsatt, the early snow we've seen statewide this season is really having a positive impact on snowmobile registrations with numbers for the year so far topping 20,000. "For the entire winter last year, we sold 22,880 snowmobile registrations, so we have essentially already hit that mark by the end of December! We have been selling over 1,000 per day all week statewide," said Wimsatt at the end of December. The New Hampshire Snowmobile Association office in Tilton is a registration agent, which simply means that we sell snowmobile registrations on behalf of Fish & Game who regulates those sales. As such, we've seen a steady stream of people coming into the office over the past few weeks and it's been a busy and exciting time. Fish & Game maintains a list of registration agents across the state (and beyond! Did you know there are registration agents in Massachusetts and Connecticut?). Visit http:// www.wildlife.state.nh.us/ohrv/agents.html for a complete list of registration agents.

Last month, NHSA published graphics similar to these that were intended to show you how the registration monies you pay for snowmobiling in the state of New Hampshire help support the sport of snowmobiling. Although they were accurate in the breakdowns, they failed to include a $2 electronic registration fee, which inadvertently caused some confusion. Here are the updated graphics. Thank you for your support of snowmobiling in New Hampshire.

016 ended on a great note with the arrival of a foot or more of snow in most parts of the state. Snowmobile registration sales have been very good this early in the riding season. Hopefully, 2017 will bring a riding season for the record books. The start of a new year also brings another legislative session. I have not seen all of the bill proposals yet, but I do know that there will be several related to OHRVs. Some may have an impact on snowmobile activities. We will be actively involved in this process providing input to legislators regarding law enforcement,

safety, education and operation of the registry. As many of you know, there have been concerns raised regarding club incentive membership procedures. There have also been inquiries regarding the legal interpretation of existing rules and procedures. OHRV registration agents have experienced some confusion and difficulty when trying to verify proof of a valid NHSA affiliated club membership. Varied membership applications with differing and sometimes conflicting information, along with agents and registrants not fully familiar with the new online membership voucher procedures have resulted in many questions directed to our registration office. To address these concerns, I held meetings with NHSA staff and our staff during the first week of January to identify short and long term solutions. There are numerous factors to consider that impact the clubs, NHSA, and the registry here at Fish and Game

Headquarters. My immediate focus and responsibility is to streamline and expedite the process by which registration agents verify proof of a valid paid club membership. This needs to be done in a manner that is both consistent and auditable. We also need to take into consideration the impact that the procedure has on the registration agent who may be a busy convenience store owner, sporting goods store, snowmobile/ OHRV dealer or a busy town clerk. We will keep you informed as new information becomes available. Please remember that Event Permit applications must be received by my office no later than 30 days prior to the start of the event. There are several administrative steps that we are required to complete to include proper noticing to local and state EMS and law enforcement. Permits received less than 30 days in advance will be denied. In an effort to be fair to all applicants,

please be sure to submit permits timely. Nobody wants to see your event canceled and negatively impact your club’s scheduled event. A big Thank You to the volunteer snowmobile and OHRV safety instructors for all of the classes held this past fall and into 2017. With a strong winter underway, we welcome and encourage clubs to host a class at any time, especially as we near the February school vacation time. Your club is eligible to receive $100 from the department to help defray the cost of the classroom, heat, snacks, supplies, etc. Please contact OHRV Program Assistant Dennis Etchells, Jr. at 603-2713129 to set up a class. If you have never held a class before and need some assistance, we have a few part-time regional coordinators that would be happy to assist you with setting up and running a safety course. Conservation officers have been very busy patrolling the trails

to promote safe and responsible riding. Please keep an eye out for those few whose irresponsible actions damage landowner relations and put this great sport at risk. Illegally modified loud exhaust, unlawful off-trail riding and unsafe speed have no place on our trails. Conservation officers will be out in force to detect and minimize these problems. Important dates to remember this winter include Tri-State Reciprocal Weekend, January 27-29, The Easter Seals RideIn in Gorham/Shelburne and the Lancaster Grand Prix Races will take place the weekend of February 3-5. The Pink Ride in Hollis is February 11 and Snodeo is March 3 and 4. There are dozens of other great events sponsored by local clubs across the state so be sure to get out on the trails this winter and join in the great riding and family friendly activities. Landowner Liability Policy Update

Cyan Magenta Yellow Black

Clubs, and landowners, are aware that we have an insurance policy for all landowners that allow a public snowmobile trail on their property. This policy is used to supplement three laws in New Hampshire that protect landowners today: (1) RSA 212:34 is the Duty of Care law that basically notes that a landowner owes “no duty of care” to keep their lands safe for others to use for recreational activities (unless the landowner charges a fee, or actually does something to try to harm others); (2) RSA 508:14 is our Landowner Liability law and it says that an owner, occupant or lessee of land is not liable for personal injury or property damage to another when they allow people to recreate on their lands (without charge or intentionally trying to harm others); and the one often forgotten about is (3) RSA 215-C:55, II which is the snowmobile Posted Land statute. Section II says that it is recognized that snowmobile operation may be hazardous and, as such, every person that drives or rides a snowmobile accepts, as a matter of law, the inherent dangers of the sport and will not maintain a legal action against landowners, occupants or lessees for any injuries from riding. When you add those three laws together, the landowners that permit public snowmobile trails on their lands are as protected as you can possibly get. But, wait there’s more. Our laws say that they would not be ‘liable’ for damages, but there are no laws that exist that say someone cannot sue someone else for any reason. And often it is the thought of actually being sued that scares land managers the most. In today’s society, we have folks who will sue just for something to

do and in the hopes that the target will settle before going to court where the case would be thrown out. Two additional legal means are in place in New Hampshire to help with this scenario: 1. RSA 212:34 Duty of Care also includes section VI that says IF someone makes a claim against a landowner and they basically knew they would not win but wanted a settlement the court shall order the claimant to pay attorney fees for the landowner if they had to hire one to defend themselves; and 2. The Bureau of Trails buys an annual Landowner Insurance Policy that covers all landowners that provide public snowmobile trails open to New Hampshire riders (we have some lands in Maine and Vermont that are open to New Hampshire sleds and they are covered also). The insurance policy is set up to step in and defend a landowner in the event a suit was filed against them because of the snowmobile trail on their property. It is geared to ensure the no landowner would have to fight for themselves alone and guarantees that we will be there to defend them and stand by their side. This is why the annual landowner lists from clubs is so vital to us. It is that list of landowners that we keep on file here in the office for the insurance company. The most important thing for the club to do for their landowners is make sure we have them in our files and the clubs list (this is why we hound the clubs for it as rabidly as we do). As of January first, our policy holder has changed and we are now back with the Rowley Agency. Rowley was our insurance provider for many years and we are happy to see them back as our provider.

Good Start To the Season This winter’s season started off great, with riding available in Pittsburg on December 10, and a good portion of the state had riding available for the Christmas to New Year holiday week. And, riders took advantage of that early riding. Trails were busy, local trailside businesses were busy and we were off to the races. Well, nature does what she wants, when she wants and she decided to throw us a curveball for midJanuary. The January thaw has hit us pretty well, but riders need to remember that we typically get a

stretch of this weather in January and that February is typically the snowiest month.

Club Grant In Aid Contracts Approved The snowmobile club GIA contracts were approved by Governor and Executive Council on December 7. On average, New Hampshire awards out $1.6 million in grooming funds to clubs to get through the winter. ❄

Go Snowmobiling Campaign Expands its Reach by Ed Klim, International Snowmobile Manufactures Association

he Go Snowmobiling campaign has been a great success. Clubs, Groups, and Associations across North America have held Military Rides, Political Rides, and often just have fun holding snowmobile rides with friends and family alike. Winter is starting strong, and there is still a good bit of winter to come this year. The trails and riding areas in many parts of North America are in phenomenal shape. During this time of year, we are seeing a little bit more daylight and the temperatures are

a little warmer, so the improved temperatures and additional daylight improves our opportunity and riding comfort. The Go Snowmobiling campaign that I have personally participated in highlighted for me the “wow-factor” and the pure enjoyment that people have when they first ride a snowmobile. I have ridden a number of times with first-time snowmobilers and they couldn’t quit talking about how much fun it was and how they couldn’t wait to do it again. Thankfully, I was well prepared for the ride and made sure that my guests were well dressed and comfortable. I have been fortunate enough to also snowmobile with many individuals who have much more experience than myself. I have learned that with a little prior planning and thought, we can shape our friends’ experience in snowmobiling with us which helps determine if snowmobiling wins over another convert. When

you take a friend snowmobiling, remember that your friend may not be experienced. Keep the ride slow, short, and simple. Chances are that your normal ride would seem like a marathon to an uninitiated friend. Don’t show off or push the envelope or challenge your friends to ride beyond their capabilities or their comfort zone. Remember, you are the one who snowmobiles a lot and understands your machine. Let your friend enjoy that first day of snowmobiling. Again, go slow, make it short, make it simple, and remember that it is always a good idea to feed them well. The Go Snowmobiling campaign is also joined with the Safe Riders! Campaign. Remember that we have a 22-minute safety video that can be found on our website at: http://www.snowmobile. org/snowmobile-videos.html or http://www.gosnowmobiling.org/ snowmobiling-resources.html The video is a great tool when introducing a friend to

snowmobiling and will help make the ride more enjoyable for everyone. You should also visit and “Like” our Facebook page before participating in a Go Snowmobiling campaign. Our Facebook page is www.Facebook. com/GoSnowmobiling . When looking at the page you will notice that many snowmobilers are posting pictures and their experiences on the page. We now have close to 10,000 Friends who visit regularly and it is common for snowmobilers to send out informative posts that are forwarded to hundreds and thousands of snowmobile enthusiasts worldwide. There is also a short general survey on our Facebook page, so when you visit the page, consider answering a few simple survey questions. We are constantly surveying snowmobile customers to see how we can better serve you and how we can help you enjoy your snowmobiling activity.

When you consider putting

together a Go Snowmobiling ride, just remember that individuals

who don’t own a snowmobile, based on recent research shows

that on a scale of 1 to 10, they rate their level of interest as a 9. People that you know, who don’t snowmobile, want to snowmobile.

Remember they also want to enjoy snowmobiling for the same reasons you do: a.

b.

To enjoy the scenery

To get outdoors to have

fun with family and friends c.

To go to unique places

that they can’t reach any other way to see amazing sights d.

To have fun in the winter

outdoors and be able to go home

tired and be ready for a good night’s sleep.

So please, go out and have fun,

take a friend snowmobiling, and enjoy this wonderful winter. ❄

WINTER 2017

Powered by Club Memberships Driven by Volunteers by Sheila Beaulieu, Club Support Committee Chair

V

olunteers are often the heart of an organization. When your volunteer force isn’t operating optimally, it doesn’t take long to feel the impact. Your staff, programs, and ultimately your mission can suffer. What do you need volunteers for? Involving new volunteers can bring significant gains to your club including additional support, ideas, enthusiasm and knowledge. There may be many reasons why your club needs more support including to: • Manage and support increasing numbers of members • Reduce the burden on current volunteers • Replace volunteers who are leaving or retiring • Help achieve the club's goals and objectives • Make the club more sustainable • Get more of the local community involved Black

When trying to determine why your club needs more volunteers it is important to be specific. Set out clearly what you need more volunteers for, what are the roles or tasks you need doing and what skills or experience is required. • Sign installers, maintenance, and removers • Permits Coordinators / Entry • Recording and printing minutes for meetings • Equipment operators, maintenance • Event Coordination • Fundraising, Raffle ticket sellers • Trail clearing • And much more How does your organization begin to find the right volunteers? Finding new volunteers to give up their time to help out at your club may feel daunting but it isn't a time consuming or a difficult task. A good place to start is by looking within your club, not at your current volunteers, but at your members and their wider networks. You can find many untapped skills that will be very useful to support the running and development of the club. At the grassroots level, networking in your community with organizations whose members volunteer in groups or individually is worthwhile. The Rotary, 4 Wheeler Club, Equestrian Clubs, Fat Tire Bike Clubs, local Conservation Clubs, local Club Scouts and Girl Scouts, these organizations are just a few examples of the kinds of groups that like to pitch in to make a difference. Through volunteering, you can: • Make new friends and trail companions • Enjoy volunteering as a family activity • Get outdoors for exercise and fresh air • Preserve the sport for future generations • Learn new skills or use your creative talents • Be involved in safety and environmental

programs Keep the cost of trail permits affordable

There will be those that ask, what do snowmobile volunteers do? Throughout the year, volunteers from hometown clubs prepare such necessities as trails, groomers, signage, bridges, staging areas and shelters for the benefit of snowmobilers. Frequently, their task becomes more challenging thanks to storm damage, flooding and other natural events that did damage during the offseason. Clubs also need a hand with office work, including websites, social media, accounting and other administration. What motivates volunteers? Volunteers in snowmobiling come in all shapes, sizes, ages and backgrounds. They have different skills and experiences and not all will be snowmobiling enthusiasts. They also give their time to this sport for different reasons –Others may be local businesses e.g. local plumbers, electricians, accountants, web designers etc. who want to put something back into their local community.

1. Friendship. In an increasingly complex world, VOLUNTEERING for your local snowmobile club provides one of the most basic human needs: the need for friends and fellowship. You will find instant friends in both your own community and throughout our state.

2. Fun VOLUNTEERING is fun! Your club projects are fun; social activities are fun; meeting new riding buddies and service to others is fun.

3. Business Development and Networking. Everyone needs to network. Snowmobile Clubs consist of a cross-section of every business in your community. Our members come from all walks of life. Clubs help one another, and collectively help others.

The above figures are based on an accrual bookkeeping system. These figures show an overview only.

4. Personal Growth and Development. VOLUNTEERING with your local club continues to better one's growth and education in human relations and personal development; motivating and leading others.

5. The Opportunity to Serve. This is perhaps the best reason for becoming a VOLUNTEER; the chance to do something for somebody else, sense the self-fulfillment that comes in the process and the return of that satisfaction to one's own life.

Camp Sno-Mo Update by Robert Kelly, Camp Director

H

In my previous article, I shared that a staff member Rebecca had organized a fundraiser for camp in her home town back in England. This time I wanted to share with you that a current camper, who has attended Camp Sno-Mo for the past seven years, held a fundraiser this fall and donated a percentage of his proceeds to Camp Sno-Mo and his local Special Olympics group. To raise the money, each Halloween Derek creates a haunted house in his back yard which he designs and builds. Derek invites friends and family members to the haunted house. He then donates their admission fees. This past October, Derek raised almost $600 which he split between the two organizations. What an incredible young man! In the photo, you can see Derek (right) with his best friend Sam. After several years away from camp, Sam returned this year for the 12-day session. Derek was thrilled to pick up the friendship where it left off a few years ago. It as an amazing reunion to witness! Camp Sno-Mo truly impacts the lives of all of those involved. What

our campers get to experience during their week or two with us means everything to them. On behalf of our campers, I thank you! Looking forward, the Easter Seals NH and NHSA Ride-In is quickly approaching the first weekend in February at the Town & Country Resort in Gorham, New Hampshire. Please stop by the Camp Sno-Mo booth and say “hello” so I can thank you in person for the commitment you have made to our campers. I’m also happy to answer any question you have about our program. I am so excited for you to meet our new Easter Seals Child Representative Elliot Perry, as well as his parents Carrie and BJ. Elliot was born prematurely at 26-weeks and Easter Seals has been there over the last five years to help him receive the therapy and extra care he needed at school. This kid is dynamite and you will just fall in love with his fabulous personality. Please feel free to introduce yourselves to the Perrys! They are very excited to join us and will be front and center for the NHFG ride on the Saturday. People often ask me what the connection is between NHSA and Easter Seals Camp Sno-Mo. My response is always quite simple. I like to think of it like this . . . Camp Sno-Mo is a place where two of the best seasons Winter (NHSA) and Summer (Camp Sno-Mo) collide and where magic happens. Through the efforts and dedication of some amazing NH neighbors (who love to snowmobile!) and for over 44 years (both past and present) this partnership has grown and thrived. I would really like to express my gratitude and appreciation, to everyone involved with the NHSA and who are and have been so kind, generous and supportive of this wonderful and unique program. We could not do it without all of YOU! Wishing you all a fun and safe, snow-filled season! If you would like to learn more about Camp Sno-Mo or other Easter Seals programs, please contact me at rkelly@eastersealsnh.org. ❄

appy New Year to all! Mother Nature has been generous so far this season, but that meant we had to cancel the final respite weekend of 2016 due to the weather. We know our campers and families look forward to these weekends, but we are always mindful to make sure our campers are safe. Camp is not equipped with a generator in the event of the loss of power, which was another reason for the cancellation. However, each of the families who had planned on joining us were very understanding and thankful for the proactive approach we took in making this difficult decision. They are all looking forward to attending our next respite weekend in March. So, on with the show . . . Online registration opened on January 1 and I’m happy to report that we have received several applications. We are already building our amazing team for next summer! We are very fortunate to have five seasoned staff already confirmed to return and are looking forward to hiring more caring individuals at an overseas camp staffing fair.

NEW HAMPSHIRE

EXPIRES 06-30-2018

The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department (NHFG) along with the New Hampshire Snowmobile Association (NHSA), and Bureau of Trails (BOT) are pleased to partner together to bring a special auction item for any snowmobile enthusiast. During the NHSA Easter Seals Ride-In Live Auction (Saturday February 4th) the opportunity to purchase the lowest registration number in the State of New Hampshire will be auctioned off. All of the proceeds will benefit the Easter Seals of New Hampshire Camp Sno-Mo in Gilmanton Iron Works, NH. The ground rules of the auctioned low digit registration decal are as follows: 1. None of the proceeds of the auctioned registration decals will go to the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, Bureau of Trails or the New Hampshire Snowmobile Association. 2. The highest bidder will be awarded the opportunity to purchase the Low Digit Registration and Decals.

4. The price will be the same cost that it would cost to resister said machine plus the highest bid* 5. The low digit will be issued to the highest bidder after the registration fee is paid at the NHFG Headquarters in Concord.

The Union Leader Awards 1. Oldest Driver 2. Longest Distance Traveled 3. Longest one-way distance within New Hampshire 4. Youngest Driver 5. Youngest Ride-In Driver on a Mini-Sled 6. Club Participation Award

(1) This awards is given to Oldest NHSA member driving a snowmobile to the Ride-In, a minimum of 25 miles, age is the deciding factor. (2) This award is given to a NHSA member driving a snowmobile to the Ride-In from the furthest location away from the Ride-In and driving one-way to the RideIn. One-Way Mileage measured in miles using odometer reading and documented using gas receipts, motel receipts, etc…. Your club and NHSA dues must be current to qualify. (3) This award is given to a NHSA member driving a snowmobile to the Ride-In from the furthest location away from the Ride-In within the State of New Hampshire and driving one-way to the RideIn. One-Way Mileage measured in miles using odometer reading

and documented using gas receipts, motel receipts, etc…. Your club and NHSA dues must be current to qualify. (4) This awards is given to the Youngest person driving a snowmobile to the Ride-in, a minimum of 25 miles, from the furthest location away from the Ride-In and driving one-way to the Ride-In. One-way mileage measured in miles using odometer reading and documented using gas receipts, motel receipts, etc. Age is the deciding factor.

6. The registration will be valid for one year (07/01/2017 to 06/30/2018) 7. At the next year’s NHSA Ride-In following the auction, the Low Digit Decal will be put back up for auction. Unlike other low digits that NHFG manage, this number will not stay with the registrant for more than the said registration year. They may, however, bid for the registration in future years. * If a resident NHSA recognized club member was to be the highest bidder and the bid was $100.00 the cost of the low digit would be: $100.00 + $64.00 = $164.00 ($100.00 to NHSA/ Easter Seals the night of the auction and $64.00 to NHFG at the Concord Headquarters when you register the machine).

(5) Youngest rider driving a MiniSled type snowmobile at the RideIn. Must be UNDER 10 years old. Age is the deciding factor. (6) This award is for the Club with the most registered members attending the Ride-In. Members must be registered in the Hospitality area by 4:00pm on Saturday. No Exceptions! Your Club and NHSA dues must be current to qualify. Please get your forms in on time. If you have any questions or concerns, please ask ahead of time. Don’t wait until afterwards.

Each year, a feature, hot ticket Auction Item at the annual Ride-In event is a special “0” registration plate offered by NH Fish & Game. size groomer can now get in there and do a complete job grooming those trails and it’s certainly a plus to be able to access the Mobil and Irving gas stations, Rossi’s and Subway, and let me not forget my favorite – Dunkin Donuts! Good member turn out for our monthly meetings continue and we look forward to hold a monthly meeting in New Hampton for all our members there. Work parties at the club garage are held as needed and posted on our Facebook page, we threw a track on the Tucker last weekend but it was quickly repaired – thanks guys! I’m writing this today when the temperature rose back up, putting an end to some of the riding in our area, most clubs in central NH are asking folks to stay off the trails till the temperature dips and we get more snow, the upside is we will have a better base once the snow returns and it will. Talking to local dealers, they tell me sled sales are up along with registrations. Here at MTR, we are also seeing an increase in membership, so thank you all for helping to grow our club and our sport. I read all the Facebook forums and one recurring issue is riders going off the marked trail into areas the landowners have not allowed, I’ve read about the outcome being the entire trail being closed down. My point is we have to stay on the trail or like the signs say “stay home” spread the word. Weather reports this weekend call for much lower temps and more snow, so hopefully yesterday and today was our January thaw and we can get back to riding. Take care, get out and ride and enjoy our sport. I have all my sleds registered and try to invite family, friends and coworkers to come up and try the sport I love. We must grow our sport and numbers. We received our permit from The Army Corp of Engineers to hold our annual event at the old Bridge Abutment in Old Hill Village, The Third Annual Bridge Abutment Boogie is set for March 4. Many details will follow on these updates and on our Facebook page. That’s all I have for now – I’m heading out to our monthly club meeting held the first Wednesday on the month. Mountain Meadow Riders Snowmobile Club PO Box 342, Conway, NH 03818 www.mmrsc.net Facebook.com/MMRSCNH By Clem Paquette, President We are excited to announce our new website, www. mountainmeadowriders.com! Check it out and come back often for trail reports, news, and project updates. We have a couple of projects in the planning stages, so our Trail Master will need some help as work on the projects get started. Keep an eye out for great things to be happening with our trail system and see how you can help! During vacation week in December, we had a significant snow fall which resulted in some great riding. Lots of people were in the valley taking advantage of the new snow. Unfortunately, some did not respect the signs letting riders know that the Conway Scenic Railroad was still running trains through the week and therefore the rails were closed

to snowmobiles. Please take note that they allow us to have our trail on their tracks and not abiding by the signage could result in loss of use of private property. We ask all riders to respect the property on which our trails run by staying on the marked trails and making note of any special instructions. As always, even after the 18 or so inches of snow we received the last week in December, the rails could still use more snow at this point. There are plans in the works to take the route off the rails along the Conway Scenic Railroad since it is difficult to get a good base on the rails due to the open areas and blowing snow. We hope this reroute will be done for next year. Our trail maps are here and ready for purchase. You can pick one up at Profile Powersports or visit our website to purchase one online and receive it via mail. We have some new restaurants advertising on our map to support our club. Check out the ads on our maps and be sure to patronize our supporters. Let them know you appreciate their support of snowmobiling! For those who already have a new map might be wondering about the green dotted trail in Conway. It is the proposed connector route to the Beat Notch Trail system. We’ll be updating our website with information on the progress of this project. Our Trail Master would like to thank everyone who volunteered this past year with trail work – putting pallets down, brush cutting, signing, etc. This is work that needs to be done every year to keep our trails in tip top shape and without the help of volunteers our trails would not be in such great condition. We have two new members who completed the Groomer Awareness and Safety training this year and have been added to our roster of drivers. If you see a groomer, show your appreciation, and if you need a map, please hail them down to purchase a one from their stash. Now that is convenient! Don’t forget to purchase your raffle ticket for the 2016 CanAm Outlander! The drawing will be held on February 11th at our annual Bonfire. You do not have to be present to win. have snow! With between 12 and 14 inches that fell just before New Year’s, and another couple of inches on New Year’s Eve, there is finally great riding on our trails. The groomers have been out, working to keep the trails in terrific shape, and our fingers are crossed that we won’t have a January thaw. We are due for a great year of riding. Memberships and registrations have increased dramatically with the arrival of snow. For the most part, people have been joining in the traditional manner by mail or on our club website, but we are also starting to see people joining through NHSA’s system. We are encouraging members to set up an account on the NHSA website to facilitate joining next year and to enable them to access their voucher numbers. Our December meeting was held at Canoe King on Route 16 in Tamworth. After the meeting, members gathered for a great meal at Jake’s on Route 16. Everyone enjoys these “after the meeting dinners” and with all of the great restaurants in our area, there is plenty to explore. Come join us!

Scrub Oak Scramblers PO Box 185, Madison, NH 03849 SOSSC.COM Submitted by Dave George Winter finally made it with an early start and hopefully, at the time of publishing this, we are still enjoying it. Thank you to all the members who joined our club this year. Your dues and donations help keep our trails in tip top shape. The volunteers that step up take it to the next level and make things happen. The year round work of any club is exhausting and more hands makes life easier on the core group. Thank you to our groomer operators and those who are maintaining them and fabricating attachments. Thanks to our volunteers at the clubhouse to keep it going for the season. Meetings are held the third Saturday of every month from October through April at 7 p.m., and an annual dinner in May is to be announced. We do dinner typically at 6 p.m. before the meeting. If you want to see what’s happening or get involved, that is a great place to start. We will be represented at the Easter Seals Ride-in on February 3rd. We will see you there. On February 18th, we will be hosting our winter carnival in the Freedom town forest (weather permitting). That is an event not to miss. Check our website and Facebook page for updates and trail conditions. Happy trails!

Seven Lakes Snowmobile Club PO Box 311, East Wakefield, NH 03830 www.sevenlakessnowmobileclub.com Submitted by Bob Lundgren Happy New Year! I’m sitting here on New Year’s Day contemplating the wisdom of New Year’s resolutions but I think the only one I’ll make is to try to get the “club news” done on time. December started with a lot of promise for a good year after a relatively mild November. We had a few minor snow events that were enough to permit some limited riding until finally on or about Christmas weekend I saw the first machines on the snowcovered Pine River Pond ice. Then we were hit with a rain even with temperatures pushing 50 so that put the end to that. However just before New Year’s weekend we had a significant storm which dumped 16-18” on Wakefield and Ossipee. Our grooming volunteers didn’t waste any time going to work. Even with the amount of snow we received it was fairly dry, so anything without previous cover tended to get spun off. In spite of that, there was some decent riding. The lake ice is still questionable, though Pine River Pond and Belleau’s had lots of traffic, albeit with some relatively minor slush. I just learned that Great East Lake has been ridden, at least on the west side, which is encouraging since that’s always the last to freeze. As always (it seems) that every year brings new issues to keep trail open. This year the major issue was keeping the “Dick Doyle Memorial Trail” open since the Northcoast Railroad had extended the active tracks up to Route 171 in Ossipee so we lost that one mile stretch and even crossing the tracks to get on the East side was not permitted. There has been a strong effort by some dedicated members to find an alternative and at this time there are hopeful signs that a reroute can be found, though probably not this season. Another potential problem was the Corridor 19 crossing at Route 16 where the ACE Hardware and Grainery are located and some construction was blocking the trail. However, just before New Year’s weekend a solution was found, so a re-route marked by snow-fencing was put in place. Another group of club members braved a December Sunday morning’s icy roads to go to the Safety Building (Police and Fire Department) in Sanbornville to participate in the “Secret Santa” gift wrapping. Our treasurer, Cathy

Stump, is the leader of this effort for our club. Sunday, in spite of the weather, 25 people showed up, 90 percentage of which were our members. This effort to provide children of needy families a nice Christmas is sponsored by the local Chamber of Commerce and services about 50 families. A worthwhile cause and thanks to those who participated. It’s also appropriate to give a huge “THANK YOU” to our volunteers. To have a successfully functioning club, we are fortunate in the number of workers we have. There are many things to be done which can easily be unappreciated, such as trail clearing, trail grooming, groomer maintenance, landowner relations, placement of and removal of signs, willingness to assume officer and board positions, arranging and attending meetings and social functions, web page and e-mail communications, map creation and distribution, etc. etc. We have a great group and some of them don’t even ride anymore! At the risk of repeating myself, when you have the chance, please check out our website at “sevenlakessnowmobileclub. com” as well as our Facebook page. Thanks to our members that created and maintain this. We’ll look forward to seeing all the pictures from the upcoming season as well as timely updates for trail conditions and related issues. Don’t forget to join a club – especially ours! Hope you had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Wolfeboro Snowmobile Club PO Box 268, Wolfeboro Falls, NH Submitted by Sue Gaudette, Secretary www.wolfeborosnowmobileclub.com wolfeborosnowmobileclub@gmail.com January has brought the WSC faithful a mix of fortunes; the obvious to the good column – SNOW! It is a welcome sight after last winter, and while we are hoping for more to come, there is a fair covering and we have been able to get the groomers out to pack and roll, we would definitely welcome more white gold. To the not so good column, for the first time, after appreciating years of our generous land owners use of land for our scenic trails without any serious issues; we have had a major section of trail closed by a landowner that is significantly impacting our system. *Part of Corridor 25 from our popular snack shack to the Castle in the Clouds trail is currently closed from the ‘Melvin Trail’ to the Castle in the Clouds.

not saying the trails were perfect, but there was enough snow to put on about 50 miles. I was a little surprised how many sleds we came across during on our trip. One couple I met was even from Massachusetts. The new trail re-routes seemed to be in good shape but be careful as some of them have become a little on the “twisty” side. The new trail we made over Rice Mountain is FANTASTIC. It’s nice not having to ride the road anymore. The new ramp Route 12 crossover at Blackjack crossing is also a nice addition to our trail. You can now easily ride to the edge of the road with lots of visibility in both directions for a much safer crossing. The Christmas Party in December was again a great success. It was nice to see so many there. The Yankee Swap, of course, is the best part of the festivities. Yours truly was lucky enough to draw the #1 spot. That gave me the option of eyeing all of the gifts at the end. I elected to trade in my peppermint vodka for 15 scratch tickets. For those of you that were there, let me say that I slowly scratched off every ticket with much anticipation to only determine at the end that there was not even 1 winner out of the bunch! All of the groomer donation cans are out at our local businesses. Feel free to add a donation to them when visiting these local businesses. Every little bit helps. Jiffy Mart has also donated a new filled propane tank for our new barbeque grill. Thank you Jiffy Mart. Hopefully, all of the members have received the 2016/2017 schedule that was sent out a couple of months ago. As a reminder, our next meetings will be on February 2, 2017 at Great Brook Farm at 7 p.m. and on March 2, 2017 at Pinnacleview at 7 p.m. Please try to attend one of these monthly meetings. We are always looking for new ideas. February 18 will be our Poker Run this year. Don’t miss this fun event. The start time will be at noon and we will end at Great Brook Farm at 5:30 p.m. for a BBQ. Drop off a dish to share earlier in the day. Details will be on the website as the date draws closer. THINK SNOW!

It was a lot of last minute effort by a lot of folks, but we got it done. Thank you to the Trails Bureau and our signing crew! We received a check from the Race Into Winter event. Our thanks to the volunteers who donated their time. We had six members who helped out and they contributed their wages to the club. They were: Chris Hanson, Jessica and Sean Roper, Josh Porter, Ranelle Forgione and Rob Martin. As mentioned last month, we had our Craft Fair on November 26. We have since tallied the proceeds and will send a record amount of $4,400 to the Easter Seals Camp Sno-Mo. Congratulations to Helga Ziegler and her crew of volunteers for their continued efforts toward this worthwhile cause. The Tri State Reciprocal Snowmobile Weekend is scheduled for January 27 through 29. Our annual Turkey Feed is planned for Saturday, January 28. Umbagog Snowmobile Association PO Box 133, Errol NH 03579-0133 www.umbagogsnowmobile.com Submitted by Bill Morin The winter season has started off really well. Extreme cold temperatures have frozen up the trails well and a couple of feet of snow made it so we could start grooming right after December 15, which is over a month earlier than last year. Hopefully the season will continue on this path and we can all make up for the lack of riding last year. Our December club meeting had several items to discuss, some of them having to do with which trails would be open for riding and where the logging operations will be focused on this year. Corser Brook Road will be open for riding this year as well as Greenough Pond Road, giving us much better trail access east of Route 26 most of the logging operations this winter will be focused on west of Route 26 with Signal Mountain Road expected to be closed for most, if not all, of the season. The good thing is

PAGE 21

Millsfield has several alternative logging roads to work with, so the riding will still be available to us in that area. All the groomers have been serviced and are ready to go. Frank and Bobby replaced several of the track studs on the groomers to aid in icy trail conditions. Nice job guys. There were several suggestions at the meeting, one of which was to look at working with the kids snowmobile event being held down south and there were also a couple of suggestions for adding new trails to the system which are being considered. Events for this winter look to be as follows: February 3 – 4, we will have a concession trailer at the Kilkenny Cup in Lancaster; February 11 will be our Poker Run at Log Haven; and March 4 will be the steak feed at the clubhouse. I hope everyone can attend these events since last year some of them got cancelled because of poor snow conditions. I hope everyone gets out on the trail early and often to enjoy the trails we weren’t able to enjoy last year and remember to be safe while you are riding and always ride with a buddy.

White Mountain Ridge Runners PO Box 425, Berlin, NH 03570 www.whitemtridgerunners.com Submitted by Dalton Binette, Club Webmaster Happy New Year from all of us at the White Mt Ridge Runners! As some of you may know, this season is off to a promising start. We have now have over a foot of snow on the ground (early January). We have been out on many successful grooming runs throughout most of our system so far. Water bars and bridge approached are starting to fill in nicely, and with a little more snow we should be in great shape. In addition to grooming, we are also gearing up for our upcoming WMRR Steak Feed which will be held in February at our clubhouse on Jericho Road in Berlin, NH. Stay tuned to our website for updates! In trail news, we are currently dealing with flooding issues on PT108, which leads to downtown Berlin. The trail is passable and currently in marginal condition. We should hopefully have this resolved by the time this update is published. Thanks again for your patience. Otherwise, our trails have been shaping up quite nicely, and we have received some great Continued on page 22

We are very sorry for this news, and are trying to negotiate with the landowner. For now, this trail is not accessible to snowmobilers, nor are the neighbors’ yards for riders to use to attempt to get around this. It will not help our cause to get the trail open if people do not abide by the closure. In fact, you are making it worse! We will update on our FB page and the website if there is any good (or not good) news to report. This is a situation beyond our control, and believe that our club is doing everything possible to get the trail re-opened. Other than that, we remind everyone that the ice has been deemed not safe yet, and it would be very unwise to think differently. Anyone venturing out there will be risking not only themselves but those that would have to go on a rescue mission. Please think twice before you ride the ice. Until next time, enjoy the trails and remember they don’t just ‘appear.’. Give some time to your club to help out. We meet the second Tuesday of the month at the Windrifter Resort at 7 p.m. on South Main Street, Wolfeboro.

Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. at our clubhouse at 241 Jericho Road in Berlin. Meeting reminders will be posted on our website and Facebook. Active members and volunteers are what helps to make this club as successful as it is! We are always open to new ideas and new faces. If you have not already done so, I encourage everyone to join our club. Membership dues help us to fund trail improvement projects and to provide a nice and flat riding surface in and out of the Berlin area. The club can be joined by printing a form online from our website on the Join page and mailing it to us, or online through the NHSA’s portal. Club membership forms are also available at the Jericho Warming Hut and local snowmobile registration stations. Club dues are only $35 a year and allow you to register your snowmobile at the discounted club member rate. All of us at the club wish you a great and safe winter season and hope to see you out on the trails. Stop by the Jericho Warming Hut and sign our guest book while enjoying the panoramic view! Also, be sure to check our Trail Conditions page throughout the season on our website for the latest trail info and conditions! Thanks again for all of your support.

In hope this note finds you all well and out enjoying the early snowfall. The tucker is up and running and has been out grooming Route 11. We had a major bridge that we replaced the weekend before the first big snow storm. Thank you to Dennis, Bob and Lucy for all your work at getting that done. The apple orchard has been staked and

we hope everyone stays inside the staked area. The apple orchard is a key piece of trail and we don’t want anyone running over any of the newly planted trees. Thank you to Ken Hall and Mike Provost for doing that. Dennis and Bob also did the staking in the field by Cass Mill Road. There is a big water hole out behind the Ford’s house on Route 11 and the guys are looking into maybe bridging it, which would mean bring all the materials out by the tucker and leaving them by the trail to fix it either now or in the spring/fall. We also will need to replace the bridge on 151 next year, so we will be looking for some help in the summer. I am sure that all of you have been out getting in all the riding that you can and looking in the Sno-Traveler for fun activities and rides. Don’t forget to send us your photos for the website and Facebook, and we look forward to seeing you on the trail. If you have any questions, then please call me @ 744-5497, and as always THINK SNOW!

Bridgewater Mountain Snowmobile Club PO Box 368, New Hampton, NH 03256 www.bridgewatermtnsmc.org You know what? We haven’t got a lot to say, except that we’re ready. Our volunteers are ready. Our equipment is maintained and ready to work. Our trails are trimmed, bridges are solid, the signs are up, and we’re just waiting for snow -- just like you. LET’S GET READY TO RUMBLLLLLLLLLLE! Like last season, there are three locations to get your BMSC Club Membership: Outdoor Performance, Newfound Grocery, and Ashland Lumber. You can also get your membership the “oldfashioned” way by printing the application off the website and mailing it in. The fastest way is directly at one of the three locations listed earlier. We will always look to earn your membership dues with great grooming and communication of trail conditions throughout the season. We greatly appreciate you being a part of BMSC! Aside from renewing your membership again this year with BMSC, we ask that you kindly support the businesses advertised on our website and the three local businesses located on our trail system that support BMSC: Outdoor Performance, Newfound Grocery, and Bridgewater Inn.

All these business owners ride, support the community and our snowmobile club. Thank you for supporting them too! Our monthly club meetings are at the Ashland Fire Station on the first Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. All are welcome to attend the meetings, hear what’s going on, and meet other members who love snowmobiling and enjoy the trails just like you. All clubs exist because someone volunteers their time. We hope to see you soon!

Lisbon Stump Jumpers P.O. Box 142, Lisbon, NH 03585 www.lisbonstumpjumpers.org Submitted by Joe Ransmeier, Secretary The Lisbon Stump Jumpers would like to take this opportunity to again remind all Sno-Traveler recipients that our annual vintage race will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2017. Racing will start at 10 a.m. The entrance fee will be $5/person, with free admission for children younger than 12 years old. The race will be held at the same location as in past years — a field located North of Lisbon on Route 302 and to the South of the turn onto Rt. 117 and the Salmon Hole Bridge. For purposes of Google Maps or similar applications, the field is located across from Dale’s Auto Body at 961 Route 302, Lisbon, New Hampshire 03585. A few parking spaces with a view of the track will be available for those who need to stay in a car due to disability, age or illness. Hot food and a variety of beverages may be purchased from Chappy’s cook shack. The vintage race is an important fundraiser for the club. Please check out the “Vintage Race” tab on http://lisbonstumpjumpers. org. Despite low temperatures, last year’s race proved to be an excellent event with several highly competitive classes. We look forward to seeing you there! Although the recent snowstorm largely missed Northwest Grafton County, we are hopeful that a resumption of cold weather will bring additional snowfall soon. Much our trail system is open, but early season conditions are present and additional rain or mixed precipitation could prove detrimental.

Lastly, a huge “thank you” to those individuals who have jointed our club (or any other club) this season. Club memberships are still available at the following locations: Du-Ez (Lisbon, NH), Littleton Motorsports (Littleton, NH), Absolute Powersports (Wells River, VT). The Bath Store will also carry memberships once it reopens.

Littleton Off Road Riders, Inc. PO Box 281, Littleton, NH 03561 www.LittletonSnowmobileClub.com Submitted by Michelle Schafer Happy New Year! Littleton sure has enjoyed the early snow fall over the holiday week. We did not get the 15 inches of snow that was promised, but we got enough to open the trails. It was explained to me that Littleton suffers from (what meteorologists describe it as) The Shadow Effect. When a Nor-Easter comes up from the south, the clouds are held back by the mountains, when the weather does get past the mountains, the wind pushes the storm quickly down the valley. So if Littleton received at least eight inches during that storm, Lisbon would have received 12, St Jay VT 15, and on the other side of the mountain in Lincoln, 25 inches or more fell. If a storm comes down from Canada, the clouds will act the same way and Littleton will receive the bulk of the snow. The early snow fall during this holiday season brought out a record amount of tourists to the White Mountains. The day before the storm, Main Street was filled with out-of-state license plates and the grocery stores were sold out of the basics. The day after the storm, Loon Mountain, Cannon and Bretton Woods ski areas sold out before 10 a.m. Imagine how many people that is/or not enjoying the snow. The local sledding hill and the ice skating rink kept kids happy all weekend. Our local dining establishments were jumping and everyone had that Fresh Powder Vibe. It was also the best snowmobile riding of 2016. I must brag, I rode all weekend long. How could I not? Fresh snow, finely groomed, it was paradise. In this New Year, the Littleton Off Road Riders will continue to improve our existing trails while slowly planning new paths. We seek to enlarge several scenic vistas for destination riders or for those who are looking for picnic areas. We are hoping this will be the year we can have that poker run we have been talking so much about. The 2017 plan also

includes many more club rides and events IF the snow sticks around. Keep in touch. Our events are posted on our website www. LittletonSnowmobileClub.com and you can like us on Facebook to get the latest updates. See you on the trails!

Happy New Year!! We hope that you had a wonderful holiday; it was nice to see the snow coming down. Thanks for the snow dances. I hope you will continue through the winter. We had a good time at our Potluck and Yankee Swap. We were even blessed with Marvin Rockes presents. It’s always nice to see him. Lots of trees are down with the fresh snow so when you get out riding, do so with caution. The guys are working hard to get them taking care of. If you still need to register your snowmobile you can do so at Pleasant Valley Store. Stop in and say hi to the new owners, Dan and Beckylynn We are looking forward to the Easter Seals ride in in Gorham this February. If you have not been to that event, you should try to make it. The town of Gorham is welcoming to snowmobilers. We meet the third Friday of the month at Mt. Cardigan Fish and game on Ball Park Rd at 7:30. All are welcome and encouraged to come.

Twin State Trail Busters PO Box 858, Lebanon, NH 03766 Email: twinstatetrailbusters@yahoo.com (The following piece of Club News was inadvertently omitted from the Early Winter issue of Sno-Traveler) The crew has been out tirelessly working on the trails. They were back on Old King's Highway sprucing up the new reroute that was built last year. This included rock picking and ditching to allow for a better water flow away from the trail. Some of the guys were up on Shaker Mountain doing some trimming after the recent snow storm. Trail signing has been completed. A huge "Thank You" goes out to the "Hypertherm Crew." Hypertherm, a Lebanon manufacturing company, encourages its associates to volunteer in the community. We have been extremely fortunate to have a group of associates (riders and non-riders) choose to help us. Coordinated by Trailmaster Roger and President Mark, the associates have helped in all aspects of trail work. Their efforts have been an enormous boost to our trail system. We appreciate Hypertherm's commitment to the community and thank all of the associates for their dedication to our club. Memberships are steadily coming in. As of this writing, over half of our members from last year have renewed. If you haven't

renewed yet, what are you waiting for? The Farmer's Almanac has predicted a good winter, don't let it pass you by. Please "like" us on Facebook for more updated club information. Wishing everyone a Very Merry Christmas and a Safe, Happy, Healthy New Year. (The following submission from Twin Mountain Trail Busters is their submission for the Winter issue of Sno-Traveler.) I hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday season. The snow gods were working pretty steadily there for a while, but seem to have taken a vacation. Let's hope they return soon. We had our Christmas potluck on December 7, along with a needed goods drive for the Haven. Thanks to your generosity, we donated 125 pounds of food, hygiene and laundry items, pet food, etc. A super effort by everyone and much appreciated. Fantastic trail news update, we will be able to continue to use Corridor 5 south from Forward's parking lot across Riverside Drive and up the hill to Route 4. However, the landowner has strong reservations about sleds passing through at night. Please plan your trip accordingly and abide by the 9 p.m. curfew. Ride respectfully — slow, quiet and stay on the trail. We are asking for your continued help with this. We are working in conjunction with the Lyme Pinnacle club and landowners to reopen the Lovejoy Brook trail. It will go from the rail trail, behind the Petro Mart in Enfield into Lyme. It will not be open this year as there is a lot of work to be done. There's the possibility of replacing a bridge, etc. Just a reminder that there is no trailer parking at the old junior high school to access the rail trail. It is now private property. The parking lot at Bakers Crossing (next to Forward's garage) and near the stone bridge in Enfield are the options. Please park in consideration of other trail users. On the rail trail, other users are sometimes not aware that snowmobiles are allowed, despite the signs. It is not unusual to encounter walkers (some with dogs and children), cross country skiers, bikers, mushers etc. Please remember what happens on the trail highly reflects in the public opinion of snowmobilers. They don't see that 99 percent of riders are courteous, slow down, acknowledge and give them room. Thank you! Our meetings are held on the first Wednesday of the month from October to April. Report on Trail Conditions by Jon Blake, Trail Master – We had the Skandic out checking trails today (December 30). Please use caution! There is no base out there. You will find every rock and bump under the snow. The following trails were checked. Little Trail: Clear from end to end. One big open water hole under the power lines. Good amount of snow, it just needs to be groomed. 103 from the Little Trail north: Open water in some sections and a few small trees leaning across the trail, not bad until up behind Lang Road. The logging runs right next to the trail and in some places crosses it. The trail is easily lost at these crossings. The goal was to check the trail all the way to The Pit Stop but there are two big trees down by the pond just south of the Under the Mountain Road crossing. (Note: These were removed and the trail is now open to the Pit Stop). Chase Trail from 103: Logging has taken place all through this section from the junction down to the crossing of 135 at the dam. Please use caution and the trail may be easily confused for a logging road. From 135 back through to Nelson Road is early season conditions. From Nelson Road south to the end of Pine Hill Road, the trail is not passable at this time. Logging two years ago left the land all torn up and this is the first we are seeing it. Options are being looked at. If anyone is available to help clear the trails, 103 is a priority. It is groomed by Connecticut Valley and before they can come through it needs to be cleared. If we can get it cleared and get them through before the rain Tuesday we will be in much better shape than to have the rail fall on unpacked snow. This last storm fizzled and we only saw 6-8" of snow. We should try and make the most of what we got. We really need a good freeze and lots more snow!

The vintage ride, Reciprocity, and Easter Seals weekends are on the agenda in the next few weeks. I hope everyone takes advantage of them and the amazing trails we have here in New Hampshire. It also gives New Hampshire the opportunity to have more visitors. Our club has some local rides that we hope to go on. It's so much fun when we can ride locally spur of the moment! Remember, club meetings are the second Monday of each month at the Parks and Rec Department in Goffstown at 7 p.m. All are welcome to join us! “Keepin’ it under 60"

Andover Snowmobile Club, Inc. PO Box 332, Andover, NH 03216-0332 www.andoversnowmobileclub.com Submitted by Allan Houle We would like to thank everyone that came out in support of our Annual Italian Buffet held the last Saturday in January. This is one of our larger events, along with the multi-item raffle with all proceeds from the raffle going to Camp Easter Seals in Gilmanton, New Hampshire. The groomers have been out as snow conditions allow, it was great to get out and groom in December for a change. Please keep in mind that most of our grooming is done in the late hours to allow the trail to “set-up.” Some other things to remember about grooming, all of our operators are volunteers and do this during their free time. Let’s remember to give them the right of way and move safely off the trail, also, when passing, make sure that you have a safe path. In many cases, the groomer is not in a position to pull over due to trail width. These machines weigh tons along with the drags and require some space to turn and maneuver. Think of it as a tractor trailer driving through the woods. Our next event for February is - ANNUAL HIGHLAND LAKE SNOFEST – Saturday, February 11, 2017 at the Andover Fish and Game Clubhouse in East Andover, N.H. Join us for an antique and vintage snowmobile show along with vintage videos and lots of hot food and drinks. Club meetings are held on the second Monday of the month at the Andover Elementary/Middle School at 7 p.m. All members and guests are invited to attend. You can also find out more about us at andoversnowmobileclub. com or contact us at info@ andoversnowmobileclub.com. We hope that your winter is a safe and you get to ride often, be safe!

Fort Mountain Trailwinders Snowmobile Club PO Box 61, Epsom, NH 03234 fortmountaintrailwinders.snowclubs.com Submitted by Bruce Blye, President As of writing this report, we have all had a taste of winter and finally a WHITE Christmas. I am excited to see the State covered in snow with Grooming and Riding off to a good early start. Our trail system has had a few re-routes, fixed and replaced a few bridges, removed some rocks/ stumps and cut back some trees and brush. The groomer has been serviced, the heating system updated (that was important), and the drag welded up in suspect areas. Trees continue to fall on the trail system, so it is a constant chore to keep up with that. If you are out and about and YOU CAN move obstacle’s in the trail, then please do so. The club does need help with regular trail maintenance. All this maintenance work is done by UNPAID VOLUNTEERS like you and me. Our regular meetings are held the first Thursday of the month at Land Dimensions on Route 4 in Epsom at 7 p.m., and you can ride your sled there! We have several social functions planned like a progressive supper (ride house to house for a meal course then a fire at the end), trailside food sales/cookout, club rides, and club outing to other parts of the state. Come and join us. You can join the club on the ONLINE MEMBERSHIP from the NHSA website, our website, at our meetings and at Bickfords Sport Center. See you on the trails.

Sutton Ridgerunners Snowmobile Club PO Box 453, North Sutton, NH 03260 www.suttonridgerunners.com Good news for snowmobile riding on the Sutton Ridgerunner trails, NH Primary Snowmobile Trail 390 in Sutton is now open for the snowmobile season! This is the area’s main east-to-west

snowmobile trail connecting the Andover trails to the Newbury\ Lake Sunapee trails. Snowmobilers riding Trail 390 can also find gas and food available at The Vernondale Store in North Sutton. Muster Field Farm Museum’s Ice Day is January 29 in North Sutton. This is an annual Muster Field Farm tradition of harvesting blocks of ice from Kezar Lake and storing them in the Ice House up on the farm. The ice blocks are then used in summer months during various farm events. This event makes for a wonderful snowmobiling trip destination. The day begins with a pancake breakfast hosted by the Sutton Historical Society and is held at the First Free Will Baptist Church in North Sutton. After breakfast, you can head over to the lake where volunteers cut the ice blocks and load them onto trailers by an ice block fulcrum so that the ice can be transported to the farm. The day continues at the farm where visitors can learn how the ice is packed in the Ice House to preserve it for summer use. There are homemade soups and desserts available on the Farm in the Ryder Corner School House. In between the day’s activities at the farm and the lake, there is always time to take a scenic snowmobile ride up on King Ridge with views over Kezar Lake and to the eastern peaks. Another ride option is to travel to Winslow State Park on Kearsarge Mountain or to Gage Hill on Black Mountain. Any of these are great local rides from North Sutton. For more information on Ice Day, visit the Muster Field Farm website at www.musterfieldfarm.com ; for the Sutton Ridgerunner trail map, visit our website at www. suttonridgerunners.com. Winter got off to a slow start again this year but, with a good storm after Christmas, we were able to ride. Many thanks to Jeff Peters, our Trailmaster, and his crew of groomer operators for the great job they do grooming the trails. We’re hoping to have several group rides this winter, both long and short, and for all ability and experience levels. Check out our website and Facebook page for details on upcoming events and dates. Thanks to Jon Lavoie for all the work he has done keeping our website up-to-date. The new NHSA online membership program has been very successful and is working great for the Nor’Easters. You can join the club and get your sled registration voucher right from your home computer, phone or tablet by just clicking on the big green box on our website. As of this writing, in early January, our membership is ahead of our best year ever at this time in 2015. Last year, the Pink Ride was again a huge success with a much needed snow storm just before the ride. Nearly 70 riders and 125 people attended the ride and the BBQ cookout afterward. This winter the Pink Ride will be on Saturday, February 11 at Silver Lake State Park with sled lineup starting at 9 a.m. and the ride leaving at 10 a.m. We ride through some of the beautiful scenic Hollis trails for about an hour before returning to Silver Lake for the free BBQ cookout. Derry Pathfinders PO Box 692, Derry, NH 03038 www.derrypathfinders.org I hope everyone had a great Holiday Season. Now that’s over with, LET IT SNOW! Time for everyone to do their best Snow Dance! I do hope this winter brings more snow than last. I am in serious sledding withdrawal. We need a great season. I am looking forward to the Easter Seals Ride-In. If you have never attended this extravaganza, you need to at least once in your life. Whether it is just for riding your sled, or for meeting new people, or my personal favorite – the auction that is held Saturday night, you will have a blast, never mind making new relationships, or seeing the children who benefit from Camp Sno-Mo. It is time well spent. Please, come, enjoy, join the parade! On a personal note, we lost one of the good guys during this season. The past Vice President of Derry Pathfinders, James Degnan passed on after battle with cancer. Jim was as passionate as they come. He absolutely loved to ride. He lived right on the local trail. You will be missed Jim. God Speed.

Southern New Hampshire SnowSlickers 73 Tower Hill Road, Candia, NH By Penny Hampl, Communications Director Wow, the holidays have come and gone already. Wishing everyone a safe and happy new year!! Mother Nature has gotten over last year and gifted us with some snow, not enough in southern New Hampshire to be able to open the gates (as of writing this, but soon). The groomers have been moved to their winter locations. Now for more snow! We have the Clubhouse open on Saturdays (9-2) for memberships and registrations. Or just to stop by for a chat and to warmup. January 7 was our annual safety course. January 21 is our annual Winter Fest. This year we have something new — Comedians. The day starts about 3 p.m. The menu is roasted turkey and the fixings. The two comedians start at 7 p.m. Did you know that the Snowslickers have been grooming Bear Brooke State Park since 1978? We purchase the land on Tower Hill in the 1970’s and built the clubhouse in 1982. There have been many changes and additions to the original building. Check out Golden Eagle Riding Adventures on Facebook or the website goldeneagleridingadventures. weebly.com for group rides. Ray has many scheduled. Think Snow!

Powder Mill Snowmobile Club PO Box 324, New Durham, NH 03855 www.powdermillsnowmobileclub.org Submitted by Ginny Abresch, Secretary I guess all that dancing helped because snow has finally arrived and our trails are up and running. After nearly 13 inches of snow at the end of December, our groomers were out and the trails were in great shape. Many thanks to all those who played a part in getting our trail system going so early this year. Let’s keep hoping that Mother Nature cooperates with the cold weather and a few more snowfalls. It’s gonna be a great season. A reminder that this year our annual Cookout on the Lookout will be on February 11 where we will have hot drinks, food, a bonfire and an amazing winter firework display. The Poker Run is a fun event sponsored by three of our local clubs. This date is still to be determined. Don’t miss Johnson’s Winter Carnival on February 18, trailside at Johnson’s Restaurant in New Durham. Stop by the BBQ pit for some great food and grab some snacks for the trail. See Ray Gamble at our monthly meetings to get the latest club apparel. He has knitted hats, baseball caps and sweatshirts in a variety of colors at a very reasonable price. Apparel will also be sold at the “Cookout on the Lookout” and Johnson’s Winter Carnival later in the season. You can also find us every month at our meetings. This year, we will once again be holding our meetings at the Granite Steak and Grill on Route 11, the second Tuesday of the month. Join us for a buffet dinner and meet up with friends who enjoy the trails as much as you do. Let it snow, Let it snow, Let it snow…

Blow-Me-Down Snow Riders PO Box 221, Cornish Flat, NH 03746 www.blowmedownsnowriders.com Submitted by Gladys Berry As I write this, we’ve been blanketed with at least eight inches of fresh snow, it’s still coming down and more is anticipated this weekend. This is most definitely a good start to the riding season. The club’s annual Holiday Potluck and Yankee Swap was held on December 13. This is by far the most attended meeting/ event of the year, with great food, good conversation and an interesting gift exchange. Over the past couple of months, our club has had no less than three significant trail re-routes. Two out of the three had the potential to shut down the trail system. Due to the diligent work of many, including that of the Trail Administrator, who happens to be my husband John, workarounds were obtained and we’re back in business. For the most part, changes in our trail system are transparent to the many riders who utilize and enjoy our trails, as they should be. I can say however, I now have a much better understanding of what it takes to re-route a trail and all of the leg work required to make it happen. It is certainly no easy task. Steven Wilkie, VicePresident, is coordinating a Poker Run on Saturday, February 11, 2017. Details will be posted on our website, www. blowmedownsnowriders.com and on our Facebook page once they are finalized. I look forward, with anticipation, to a winter that’s filled with abundant snowfall, spectacular riding and the comradery that being an active club member provides. See you on the trails!

It has been a busy fall/early winter for the Blue Mountain Snow Dusters. I am happy to report some of our existing members have re-committed themselves to the club and we have picked up several new members to help out with the various club responsibilities. Maintenance on our 1989 Tucker and two Skandics has been completed. Landowner permission forms have been gathered. Our website has been updated with a new interactive trail map. Trail maintenance is ongoing and we are working on getting our 65 miles of trails signed for the season. I want to thank all of our volunteers and landowners for making it all possible. While there is always more to do, we are definitely moving in the right direction! Our trail maintenance this fall included a new bridge that will allow for a trail re-route through our town recreation fields. Also working with the Springfield club and landowners, we are pleased to report the trail between Grantham and Springfield along route 114 has been re-opened after being closed for the past several years. Thank you to all of the landowners and volunteers who were able to make this happen. This will allow much easier access to the Springfield, Canaan and Lyme trail networks from the Grantham area. Our trails are open! Some of the snow we received during December survived the warm spells to form a decent base. We were able to get out with the Tucker over New Years and groom much of our trail network. It is certainly early season riding, but after not being able to open the trails at all last season, it has been great to get out and see sections of our town that are really only accessible during the snowmobile season. Hopefully Mother Nature will cooperate and give us a good old-fashioned New England snowstorm. Our regular meetings are held the first Tuesday of each month in the lower level of the Grantham Town Hall at 6:30 p.m. Please join us to learn more about the Blue Mountain Snow Dusters. Check out our website and like us on Facebook. Think snow. ❄
