FARMERS’ MARKET ////
Benchwarmers Coffee Benchwarmers Coffee & Chocolate was founded with the idea of providing a quality cup of coffee. Something a little better than the burnt swill that some places provided as an answer to a basic black cup of coffee. Adam Kenderdine started out selling another company’s coffee, wanting to open his own café. The more he learned about the coffee business, the more he envisioned Benchwarmers becoming something more. After a few months of hawking the other company’s coffee, he started to tinker in roasting his own coffee beans. In a few short weeks, Adam taught himself everything about coffee roasting, cultivation of coffee and all the processes of coffee. As he roasted beans, Adam researched each farm all those beans came from. He was so intrigued by the history of each farm or cooperative. These people put in such heart and soul in the cultivation of the bean he would roast. This is the reason he doesn’t artificially flavor his coffee. Instead, he prefers to let all those nice nuances shine through. “Each coffee we offer has a story, and I want to do my best to tell that story through roasting and brewing coffee,” says Adam. For instance, the Sumatran coffee they currently offer is from an all female cooperative from a small village on the island of Sumatra. Many of these producers are women who unfortunately lost their husbands in the 2003 civil war. They have persevered in a male-dominated industry to produce this bold cupping coffee. “Then, I did the dumbest thing I could have possibly done, which was to teach myself how to make chocolate,” exclaims Adam. Now he’s not talking about melting down Hershey’s chocolate chips to cover pretzels or caramel. He’s talking about obtaining raw cocoa beans in the same way he approaches coffee. Then Benchwarmers roasts the raw cocoa beans and processes the beans into chocolate bars and other confections.
