Unique Reading Health System Program Supports Employee Engagement within the Community


nowing that many Reading Health System employees had the desire to become more actively involved in the community, Reading Health System established the Employee Engagement Initiative. This program, launched in March 2012, gives all system employees the chance to participate in one volunteer activity per year during their normal workday. It’s a great way for the employees of Reading Health System to give back to the community and become more engaged with local organizations.

Since the program’s inception, the number of participating employees has more than doubled - from approximately 100 in 2012 to over 250 in 2015. Over the past year, Reading Health System employees have contributed almost 1,000 hours of volunteer time to 13 different community organizations including the Hope Rescue Mission, Berks Encore, Centro Hispano, American Red Cross, Animal Rescue League, Humane Society, Opportunity House and many others.

Whether it’s assisting with prepping and serving food at a local food pantry, painting murals for a community venue, or cleaning up area walking trails, Reading Health System employees are always seeking new opportunities to volunteer throughout Berks County.

Local organizations are grateful for the extra hands they receive to help complete projects and programs, and Reading Health System Employees are inspired to take action and make a difference in their community. This program has encouraged teamwork and relationship building among employees, all while learning more about the wonderful services these organizations provide.
