bat detectors

Batdetectors Detecting Bats Bats produce ultrasonic calls that are inaudible to the human ear in order to navigate their environment, socialise and hunt prey. Echolocation calls bounce off objects and the reflected sounds are detected by the bats highly sensitive hearing. This allows them to build up a picture of their surroundings. Bat detectors convert bats ultrasonic sounds into audible sounds and so these devices allow the detection of bats flying in an area. The sounds converted in the bat detector can be listened to via the detectors speaker or headphones and can be a fascinating range of ticks, clicks, warbles, and trills.

Which bat is it? There are over 1000 species of bat worldwide, with 17 species breeding in Britain. Each bat species echolocates within a specific ultrasonic frequency range, and the ‘peak’ frequency, combined with the distinctive type of sound each species makes (eg. trills or clicks) allow the identification of species using bat detectors. A number of guides include audio CD recordings of typical bat calls and these can be useful aids to identification for a beginner.

How to choose your bat detector? The number of bat detectors on the market has increased greatly over the last few years and choosing the appropriate bat detector can be difficult. Your choice will probably be determined by your answers to two questions – why you want the detector and how much you want to pay for it. Most people using bat detectors fall into one of two groups, those who are simply interested in bats because they are fascinating creatures, and those involved in professional or academic bat surveys. Heterodyne and/or frequency division detectors are frequently used by both groups whilst the more expensive time expansion detectors are more normally used only by professional bat workers. See below for a brief description of each technology, the ‘bat detector basics’ box for other criteria you may find useful when buying a new detector and the ‘bat detectors for professional surveys’ box if you are a bat worker or interested in professional survey work.

Heterodyne detectors • The least expensive detectors • Very good for beginners • T he best for immediate identification of bats in the field A heterodyne detector mixes the bat sound with an ultrasonic signal made in the detector, then filters this sound to produce the difference between the two ultrasounds. The sound produced is audible to the human ear.

Tune into the frequency used by each bat species (rather like tuning in to a radio station). All heterodyne bat detectors are tuneable within the range 20–120kHz, appropriate for all European bat species. A backlight on the dial allows you to read the frequency more easily in the dark. Some detectors have a digital LCD display, which makes the determination of frequencies easier.

Case design If the controls are on the side of the detector rather than the top it is easier to operate with one hand. Weight is also an issue, particularly if you are carrying an audio recording device, torch and other equipment.

Loudspeaker Most detectors have a built-in speaker though you will probably want to use headphones at least some of the time.

Headphone socket Plug in headphones so you can listen without disturbance.

Microphone This picks up the ultrasonic calls, so the type and quality of the microphone determines in part how sensitive the bat detector is.

Audio output socket Plug in a digital recorder, minidisc, tape or DAT recorder and record the bat calls. The detector divides the incoming frequency (usually by 10) to give an audible output. For example, 50kHz (inaudible) is output at 5kHz (audible). You can record the sounds and use the recordings with sound analysis software.

Time expansion detectors • The more expensive detectors roadband recording – all • B frequencies are detected • P roduces higher quality recordings/sonograms A time expansion detector digitally records the ultrasonic call and then plays it back at a slower rate which gives an audible output.

Frequency division detectors

Recording bat calls

• Generally mid-price

Most detectors can be directly attached to audio recording devices such as minidisc, Mp3 or other digital recorders including many smartphones. Some detectors now have inbuilt recording facilities allowing you to record onto a digital memory card without additional equipment.

• S ounds can be recorded and analysed, but you can also listen to real-time calls in the field as with a heterodyne detector

2

Frequency dial

You can record to minidisc, Mp3, or other digital recorders, provided the detector has an audio output socket (most do), but the recordings cannot be used with sound analysis software.

• Ideal research detector

Buyers GUIDE

Bat Detector Basics

You can record the timeexpanded sounds and use sound analysis software with the recordings. Time expansion detectors record digitally and at a slower speed; consequently, the recording is higher quality than with a frequency division detector, so you can make a more detailed analysis of the sound.

• Detects all frequencies at once

THE

Bat Detectors for Professional Surveys Professional bat workers typically undertake two types of survey – transects and longer term passive monitoring. A number of new advanced detectors specifically aimed at this market have been developed over the last few years. Advanced detectors for transect work (including Wildlife Acoustics’ EM3, the Anabat SD2, the Batbox Griffin, the Elekon Batlogger, and several of the Pettersson detectors) typically record digitally using time expansion and/or frequency division and often also have a heterodyne function to enable immediate identification in the field. Many also include a GPS option that automatically geolocates any bat calls recorded during a transect. The addition of a suitable external battery, leads, and additional weatherproofing can be used to ‘convert’ some of these detectors into longer term passive monitoring units. However, several purpose built passive monitoring systems available have been developed including the Wildlife Acoustics SM2BAT+ and the EcoObs Batcorder. These units have superior weatherproofing and can be left in the field recording bat calls over weeks or even months.

WildlifeAcoustics Professional Bat Detectors from the USA NEW Song Meter SM2BAT+ • Ideal for passive monitoring • Records WAC and ZCA files • Enhanced waterproofing • Omnidirectional microphone

The Song Meter SM2BAT+ is the latest addition to Wildlife Acoustics range of high quality sound recorders. Developed in response to customer feedback, the SM2BAT+ replaces and improves on the SM2 mono (384kHz) and SM2 stereo (192kHz) with the option to record at 192 or 384kHz. Consequently, European customers will no longer have to worry about whether or not they are likely to encounter lesser horseshoe bats (mono 384kHz) but will retain the ability to record bats, birds, frogs and other wildlife via a second microphone positioned up to 100 meters away (stereo 192kHz). The SM2BAT+ now includes the option to record in Wildlife Acoustics WAC format or in ZCA format meaning that users will either be able to quickly and easily analyse files in Analook using the ZCA format files or analyse in detail the amplitude and harmonic details of the original bat signal by recording in WAC format. In addition the SM2BAT+ has enhanced waterproofing to help protect the internal circuit boards when programming the unit in the field. The SM2BAT+ can be easily programmed on your computer or directly on the SM2BAT+ to record on simple time-of-day schedules or to implement the most complex monitoring protocols, even scheduling recordings relative to local sunrise, sunset and twilight. Filenames are time stamped and include a programmable prefix to uniquely identify recordings made from each Song Meter. While making recordings, the SM2 also logs the internal temperature sensor and external sensor port every five minutes to a text file. Four SD/SDHC/SDIO card slots for high capacity storage or future capabilities like GPS, Bluetooth and WiFi. With four 32GB cards you can expect to have storage space for 8 months continuous recording! Four D-size batteries record up to 240 hours spread out through months at a time. Field tests indicate you can expect 9–10 days of recordings based on 12 hours per night using normal good quality batteries. This can be extended by using a solar panel or external battery pack. SM2 External Temperature Sensor

The SM2 microphone cables can be used to extend the microphone so that it can be sited away from the main SM2 recorder. We recommend you do not use more than 100 metres of cable (if you exceed 100 metres you would require a boosting amplifier to maintain signal quality).

An external temperature sensor for use with all SM2 packages. The stainless steel sensor comes with 10 metres of cable and plugs directly into the SM2. It features solder/heatshrink on the thermistor and a precision resistor. The sensor can be used to measure water or soil temperature. It can also be used to measure air temperature if not left in direct sunlight. The accuracy of the sensor is generally better than +/- 2° Celsius.

SM2 power adaptor This SM2 power adaptor is suitable for use with any of the SM2 Terrestrial Acoustic or Bat Ultrasonic packages. The power adaptor includes cables and voltage regulator with reverse current protection, housed in a weaterproof box. It can be used to connect 12V batteries to the SM2 for extended deployment times.

• Never miss another bat!

• Integrated temperature logger • Integrated GPS • Time Expansion The Batlogger is an extremely versatile tool for both scientists and bat workers alike and includes a sophisticated bat detector / recorder and powerful yet user friendly call analysis software package. Ultrasonic calls (range: 10–150 kHz) are recorded in 16-bit full spectrum to retain details of the amplitude and harmonic structure of the original bat signal that are lost with many other recorders. The Batlogger also records the GPS coordinates (via an integrated GPS receiver), and environmental temperature at the time of recording. Different recording settings (scheduled, permanent, or instant), and different trigger thresholds (for call identification) can be set up. The Batlogger comes in a sturdy foam-padded carrying case, and includes a 4GB Kingston SDHC-card (loaded into the device), and a charger. As this device is made by a Swiss manufacturer, please note that this charger has a type C Europlug (CEE 7/16) power plug). Recordings are saved on a SDHC-card. The free BatExplorer Software allows you to manage BATLOGGER recordings easily and quickly. You can listen to the recordings, expanded in time and thus in the audible range. Filter and sort to find the relevant data. Import, export and backup features simplify the handling of a large number of recordings. Thanks to the BATLOGGER’s integrated GPS you can also see where calls were recorded. Analysis is easy with BatExplorer because the software automatically detects bat calls and displays them. Customizable spectrogram with zoom and measuring aids facilitate manual species identification whilst BatExplorer also includes computer-aided identification of species with the help of the integrated bat species library (European species). With Elekon’s Batscanner detecting bat calls is easier than ever – you just turn on the device and listen. The Batscanner sits comfortably in your hand, is lightweight, and small enough to take with you wherever you go. The ultrasonic sounds are automatically transformed into the audible range, without the need for any adjustments – the mixing frequency is determined and readjusted automatically by the call frequency of the bats. The peak frequency is displayed immediately after even a brief fly by so species are not missed simply because the wrong frequency was selected. The Batscanner features excellent audio performance. The heterodyne converter is digitally driven, giving it a clear sound and only minimal noise. The built-in loudspeaker has been optimized to avoid feedback loops and connected to a headset so that a single user can concentrate better on the bat calls. There is also an intelligent automatic noise reduction function that removes noise created by crickets and clothing but preserves the low frequency calls of bat like the noctule. Code

BAT DETECTORS

EcoObs

German design with automated call analysis Batcorder • Automated call analysis using EcoObs software • Ideal for long-term passive monitoring • Robust weatherproof case

The batcorder is optimized for passive monitoring of bat activity. It is easily deployed and has a long runtime of up to ten nights (longer deployments are possible using external batteries / power sources). With an omnidirectional microphone and excellent signal-to-noise ratio the Batcorder produces high quality full-spectrum recordings of bat calls and even distinguishes bat calls from other sound sources in real-time (online signal analysis). These features allow the automated analysis of recordings, one of the key features of the Batcorder and an essential tool for passive monitoring due to the large numbers of recordings produced. Calls are recorded digitally as call sequences. Thus, bat calls can easily be sampled automatically at nearly every possible location. Bush crickets and other sounds (e.g. wind, water, rustling leaves) are under most circumstances not recorded at all. Each batcorder and its microphone are calibrated for a fixed sensitivity so that

Batcorder software • bcAdmin bcAdmin is the main application for managing and analysing Batcorder recordings. It stores information on recordings, sessions and locations in a database for further evaluation. It is designed to complement the batcorder but works with other recordings as well. bcAdmin implements the analysis of bat call sequences and stores measurements in special files for identification with batIdent (the free software that provides a reference library of over 70,000 bat calls and counting). Bat activity can easily be displayed in tables or graphs generated by bcAdmin.

the comparison of activity recorded at different locations and with different detectors is possible. Sound recordings are written as raw audio files. These files can be read with any sound software that is capable of opening raw files, including Batsound. Recordings are stored onto an SDHC card, with the Batcorder sampling sound at 500 kHz with 16 Bit amplitude resolution. Thus, it uses 1 MB of memory per second of sound recording. An SDHC card of 16 GB of memory allows you to store around 15,000 typical bat recordings (each with approximately one second of duration). This is sufficient for activity sampling of 5 to 20 consecutive nights at most ground based locations. When recording on wind turbines, recordings of more than 30 days usually fit onto a 16GB SDHC card. The batcorder is optimized for autonomous usage and its casing is IP65 weatherproof. Through intelligent algorithms and low-power consuming parts, the batcorder reaches run-times of up to 100 hours with the supplied, external NiMH battery pack (6V / 2.7 Ah). This typically resembles 6 to 10 nights of usage in Auto + Timer mode. Code

Batcorder software Batcorder software, is only available for Macs, with no Windows version planned. We recommend buying a mini-Mac (available from many computer retailers – shop around for a good deal!), but any Mac will do providing it is a Mac OSX 10.5 or newer. Whilst this is an extra up-front expenditure, the time savings from using the automated analysis software will recoup any initial outlays very quickly.

• bcAnalyze bcAnalyze supplements the Batcorder system and offers manual analysis of recordings. As in other such applications you can view the oscillogram, spectrum and sonogram of your sound files. Measurements from bcAdmin are plotted above the sound wave or get overlaid over the sonogram. This allows you to manually confirm batIdent results or analyse recordings from other systems. bcAnalyze features one of the fastest sonogram displays available. You can quickly browse calls by pressing the tab key to select the next call. Selected sound can be quickly transformed into a sonogram or spectrum display by simply highlighting the desired segment.

10

• batIdent batIdent is the freely available software that complements bcAdmin for automated species identification of echolocation calls of European bats. Advanced statistical methods allow the automated identification of 27 species from 11 genera, with some species in the form of groups (e.g. Plecotus). The call library used in the analysis features more than 77000 individual signals. batIdent performs a single call analysis in a multi step process. Unknown or incorrectly measured signals are rejected. Calls that are not well defined are assigned to a lower group level. The results and assignment probabilities for the calls of a sequence

are used to extract up to three species per recording. With test calls a positive classification rate of 85% was achieved. Random sequences recorded under suboptimal circumstances will not always reach such high separation, but batIdent has proven itself in daily practice for many users. Species information from calls is typically derived in less than a second. Code

Additional accessories for Batcorder

Batcorder Microphone

Batcorder Box Extension The Batcorder Box Extension provides a reliable solution for long term monitoring projects such as those used for wind farms or extended monitoring of roosts. The Batcorder is housed within a robust plastic box. The microphone is installed in the box cover and additionally protected by a foam ring. The Batcorder Box Extension contains a microphone test capacity to detect deviances from calibrated sensitivity. If the microphone is damaged by rain or dirt, the control module will report this via SMS. The box can also be locked with a padlock providing security for the Batcorder inside. At the end of each recording interval (night), the box also sends a detailed status update to a nominated mobile phone. This message contains the number of recordings made that night, overall number of recordings, memory capacity of the SDHC card, microphone sensitivity as well as other error messages such as an empty battery. All you need is a standard SIM card, which you can install yourself. A prerequisite is reasonably good mobile coverage at the location (this can be checked prior to installation on a normal mobile phone). A control module allows connection of 6V to 17V batteries. The set comes with a 6V/ 12 Ah lead-gel rechargeable battery (normal runtime is about 20 days). This can be recharged using 6V solar panels (optional). Thus, the maximum runtime of the Batcorder is limited only by the SDHC card’s capacity. Usually you can expect a 32GB SDHC card to last two to three months at a site with ‘average’ activity.

Optional Solar Panel The solar panel recharges the Batcorder after each night of recording (therefore deployment time will only be limited by the capacity of the SDHC card). However, if there is a prolonged spell of cloudy weather, and the Batcorder is not recharged properly, the user will receive an SMS text message notifying them of a low battery. Code

Acoustic Monitoring on Wind Turbines The nacelle (gondola) of a wind turbine is not an ideal location for acoustic sampling. Extreme weather conditions put a lot of strain on microphones and may lead to loss of sensitivity. Strong electromagnetic fields and acoustic noises may temporarily exist and lead to large numbers of erroneous recordings without bat activity. Prolonged monitoring of more than a year (as demanded by some authorities) can place a lot of strain on equipment. By placing your Batcorder in an Extension Box on the bottom of the nacelle you can minimise exposure to harsh weather. The SMS update texts will keep you informed of the status of the equipment and the boundary microphone is specifically designed to maintain the high levels of recording quality necessary for automatic call analysis. You can probably expect to get 1 or 2 non-bat recordings a night due to acoustic noises generated by the turbine. On nights with strong winds this may rise to 20 recordings (and very rarely, this may get as high as 100 recordings). However, the Batcorder software will filter out these calls when conducting its automatic analysis.

Batcorder Wind Turbine Extension Kit Tried and tested at countless wind farm developments across Europe the Batcorder wind turbine extension kit enables the user to undertake accurate bat surveys on wind turbines using a Batcorder. The extension kit comes with a special plastic disc in which a boundary microphone is embedded. This disc is specifically developed for the Batcorder and replaces the standard microphone. The disc is inserted directly into the turbine nacelle (gondola) through a hole with a diameter of 10cm. Power to the Batcorder and microphone is controlled by a separate control module. While the Batcorder is turned off (daytime) the module is connected to the power line within the wind turbine nacelle (110–240 Volt), which charges the lead-acid gel battery for the Batcorder. When the Batcorder turns on, the module disconnects from the main nacelle power line. The Batcorder and module now run on power from the lead-gel battery. The Batcorder is galvanically isolated from the power line to eliminate noise from the power line. The battery set up means that Batcorders can be left unattended for three months at a time. If the main power of the nacelle is switched off, the Batcorder can still run for a couple of nights on the lead-gel battery. To ensure that the Batcorder continues to function over long deployments, the control module can send progress reports via text message. Just before sampling is stopped, the control module sends a status message via SMS to any selected cell phone number. That way you always stay informed on recording count, memory status and other information. It can also report problems with the power supply and microphone. The microphone disc (that sits flush with the exterior of the nacelle) has an inbuilt loudspeaker. This emits a sound that is used to check the microphone is working correctly. In order to receive updates, you need to install a SIM card and ensure that you have network coverage at the turbine site.

Installation and Usage From existing customer feedback, the Batcorder system seems to work equally well on all turbine designs. Originally the extension kit was designed for use on Enercon turbines, but has now been used on a variety of turbines including Vestas turbines from mid-1980s. If in doubt, we recommend conducting a test run before large scale deployments. Installation of the Batcorder and wind turbine extension kit should be carried out by the certified technicians of the turbine producer or operator. Code Price net Inc. VAT

Was £189.99, now only £164.99

• Detachable Screen

(inc VAT)

• 9mm camera head The Explorer digital endoscope camera is the bat workers best friend. The screen can be detached from the endoscope whilst in operation and footage can still be viewed on the screen. One person can be balancing precariously up a ladder checking roosts whilst the rest of the group views the footage from the safety of the ground! With an effective range of over 10 metres, the screen and endoscope do not even have to be near each other. The Explorer is lightweight and easily operated with one hand. There is an AV port for video output to any computer or monitor which also has an AV port. At one metre in length, the endoscope can be used to look inside a variety of boxes, burrows, nests and other crevices. The adjustable lighting level can help to minimise disturbance to animals. The camera has an IP67 waterproof rating allowing you to investigate under the water. The tip of the endoscope is just 9mm in diameter with two LEDs providing adjustable lighting for the camera. The TFT-LCD colour screen is 4.7 by 3.5cm (effective pixels: 480 x 240). The screen has a rechargeable Li-battery and a mains charger is included. The endoscope takes 4 × AA batteries. This gives over 17 hours of continuous use when not used wirelessly. The Explorer comes with three camera attachments (mirror, hook and magnet), mains charger and a heavy duty carry case. Code
