Karl Drais German aristocrat, a minimalist who invented, among other things, the “Dandy Horse” Born Baron Karl Friedrich Christian Ludwig Freiherr Drais Von Sauerbronn in 1785 in Germany, Drais was an extremely accomplished guy, although he died penniless. He studied Architecture, Physics and Mathematics at Heidelberg University. A volcano erupted in Indonesia in 1815, which disrupted all of Europe’s crops and food was scarce for horses. This got his wheels turning. Since necessity is the mother of invention, the Baron designed the first bicycle that was propelled by one’s own feet. The pedal came later. He also invented the first typewriter with keys, a meat grinder and other goodies. He was a French Revolution sympathizer who dropped his Baron title, and “Von”. This cost him in the end. His pension was seized and he was jailed after the effort failed. Today, as much as then, his famous creation is hailed as remarkable.
