ON the COVER Enter the 21st Century by way of the 18th, at 826 Boston Post Road, Madison, Connecticut

S uch is the magical sensation one experiences the moment they cross the threshold of this once one and a half story residence; originally built around

1789 by Benjamin Bradley Wilcox. While many romantic details remain, as is the case with many historic houses in Madison, 826 Boston Post Road has grown and changed over the years. In fact, it has grown to embrace an expanded main residence, three individual buildings, including two residences offering it's caretakers over 7,300 square feet of comfortable living space on a majestic 1.72 acre estate within walking distance of beaches and Town amenities. In fact, you can't get too much closer to either without living directly on the Town Green or shoreline. While the main residence has been completely and lovingly renovated / restored with great respect for the home’s rich history by its current caretakers; preserved are many of the home’s decorative elements, rich and features that demonstrate the Federal period origins of the house. Prime among these are the fireplace surround in the northeast room of the first floor and the bake oven located outside the cooking hearth in the home’s original kitchen, now the dining room.

The floor plan is open and welcoming; boasting large rooms and great public space that transitions comfortably from room to room. The restoration of the original portion of the residence is stunning; featuring gleaming hardwood floors, high ceilings, multiple fireplaces and preserved delicate detail. The East Room now serves as a sitting room that opens to both a large 23x14 formal dining room with fireplace and to a completely enclosed 30 x 7 sunporch; perfectly suited for a morning cup of coffee or evening cocktail regardless of Mother Nature’s temperament.

The west side of the residence welcomes you with a 30 x16 living room.

The original portion of the home transitions respectfully to a spectacular 19x16 granite kitchen featuring top of the line appliances, oversized center island, cherry cabinets and oak floors. The kitchen is complimented by a 23x17 informal dining area, too large to call an eat-in kitchen. Outdoor dining is accommodated by a 42x37 covered deck with elevated fire pit for those chilly evenings. Adjacent to the kitchen is the family room with entry to two of the residences five garage bays.

The massive master bedroom suite is comprised of a 19x19 bedroom, spacious master bath, 20x14 walk in closet, and 18x25 sitting room. The hallway opens to the residence’s original 4 bedrooms; including a Jack and Jill configuration and two additional full baths. There is a 40x23 finished attic that once served as the Town’s dance hall. The Estate also features a 2,280 square foot guest house complete with 39x35 game room, highlighted by an enormous walk-in fireplace, kitchen area, and bar. Upstairs features an Inlaw apartment complete with kitchen and full bath. In between the two buildings is a separate three car garage complete with workshop and potting shed. $2,890,000 826 Boston Post Road in Madison truly is a masterpiece combining respect for the estate’s rich history with all the comforts expected in today’s marketplace of an estate of this magnitude.

Add Charm, Whimsy, Humor and History to Your Seaside Decor with a Little Coastal Connecticut “Clutter”

This comical postcard was mailed on July 21, 1907 from Madison, Connecticut to Winooski, Vermont. It is postmarked again in Burlington, Vermont on July 22, 1907. It was printed at “The Art Store” by Frank H. DeMars in Winsted, CT whom was also a photographer. His story in itself is fascinating, which may be garnered by the little information that is stamped on the postcard. Peg Giles found her grandfather’s negatives in an attic in 2006 and has scanned and posted 5000 images online at including a fantastic story about him and the extraordinary legacy that he left to his family and history buffs of Connecticut. The postcard was discovered on eBay.

eBay is flooded with vintage coastal Connecticut postcards where sentimental value may be recovered for just a few dollars. The Library of Congress is another wonderful source to score complimentary copies of vintage postcards and photographs of tremendous quality that may be reproduced for walls, pillows, lampshades, old luggage, laminated rugs and anything you can think of when your creative inner soul is hankering for an outlet. Remember decoupage? Scour your local antique shops filled with postcard gems that will be enjoyed by generations to come. “Hands Across the Sea”dated 1909
