LOCATION

Scarlett housing is designed by Tuomo Siitonen architect SAFA. The buildings are in an excellent location on S채rkiniementie in the Vattuniemi district of Helsinki, only approximately 200 metres from the seashore.These two apartment block lie close to the park on the western edge of the headland.

CONNECTION

OPEN VIEW TO THE SEA

The center of Helsinki can be reached in fifteen minutes and the Westway highway along connects easily with other directions. The new westward Metro line is currently under construction, connecting to Ruoholahti.Ferries to the island is a good services - the island is its own small town in the metropolis Helsinki.

SERVICES The parking lots are on the basement, with direct access to residential areas. The courtyard in the central provides a open, green space with landscape design entities.

The waste management is on the ground floor. There are public saunas with chilling balconies opening to the courtyard. All services are well accessible .

FACADES

INSIDE - OUTSIDE

There is an obvious contrast in the facade material of Scarlett Housing

THE FACADES ALONG THE OUTER EDGE ARE OF IN-SITU RED BRICKWORK, WHILE THE COURTYARD SIDES ARE RENDERED WHITE.

EXISTING BUILDINGS STOCK IN THE NORTH, EAST AND SOUTH SIDES OF THE PLOT. THE OUTSIDE FACADES ARE IN-SITU REDBRICKS. WHILE THE YARD-SIDE WALLS ARE PLASTERED AND WHITE


LIGHT - HEAVY

Balancing the whiteness of the courtyard is the rich red brick of the unassuming outside facades. STREETVIEW ON THE WEST


TYPICAL FLAT LAYOUT

The buildings have 6–7 storeys and four stairwells.

There is a variety of apartment types ranging from one-bedroom apartments of a little over 50 square metres to spacious family apartments of over a hundred square metres. Stairwells are arranged on the side connecting the outside road. These are all accessible from both side in the ground. The four stairwell are separate. The flats are arranged around the four stairwells. The service core ( for sauna, WC and kitchen) stay naturally near the stairblocks. The flats in the middle usually have no open air for WC, while the flats on the side have better layout. Sunlight enters the flats from the the livingroom quarters with glazed balconies. All bedrooms have windows.


FLOORS LAYOUT

THERE IS A ROOF-LEVEL CANOPY LINKING THE TWO BUILDING ENTITY INTO ONE. THE CANOPY ALSO LENDS AN AIR OF SOLIDITY TO THE SEA-FACING ELEVATION. HOWEVER, THE CANOPY SLAB DOES NOT PROVIDE PROTECTION FROM THE RAIN BUT DOES CAST SHADOW, WHICH IS LESS DESIRABLE FOR THE USE OF THE BALCONIES.


OPEN VIEW There are low-lying houses and a park between Scarlett and the shore, and a seaside view from the windows and balconies of the topmost floors. The buildings have been designed so that as many apartments as possible have a seaside view.

THROUGH THE GAP OPENING BETWEEN THE BUILDINGS. THE OPENING UP OF VIEWS ON SUCH A DEEP PLOT IS A FINE ACHIEVEMENT. All the apartments have a sea view towards the west, most

THE STEP SOLUTION FOR THE LAYOUTS ENSURE THAT NO BALCONY BLOCKS THE VIEWS FROM OTHER FLATS.


OPEN VIEWS FROM BALCONIES Scarlett Housing lies in a great location, nearby the seashore. THE MAIN DESIGN IDEA IS TO OPEN ALL THE APARTMENTS TO THIS DIRECTION. The link between the apartments and the balconies is exemplary and allows THE INTERIOR SPACES TO VISUALLY EXTEND OUTWARDS. The balconies are stylish and have a maritime feeling. Their square floor plan gives them a room-like cosiness and makes them easy to furnish. The balcony walls are lined with timber and the glazed side with its balustrades has a nautical character.

HOWEVER, THIS CAUSES TO ANOTHER WEAK POINT. SOME FLATS HAVE AN AWKWARD, ELONGATED LIVING ROOM.

STRUCTURE - MATERIAL THE EXTERIOR WALLS

The exterior walls are load-bearing part of, partly for nonload-bearing thermal insulation with the inner shell by the precast concrete.

PARTITIONS

The walls between the apartments are 180 mm thick reinforced concrete. The walls between apartments and stairwells are 200 mm-thick reinforced concrete walls or concrete chimney elements. Inner walls are plasterboard walls. With humid areas, the walls are water-proof. Most of them are painted in white.

FLOORS, CEILINGS AND ROOF STRUCTURES Floors are betoniontelolaatat bearing structure. Roof load-bearing structure and betoniontelolaatat covered kumibitumikermi. All flats are wooden flooring.

WINDOWS

Housing the windows are mostly in triple-glazed opening. Wood-aluminum windows and frame cladding are enameled aluminum. They are painted in white.
