Ways to Perfect Your Oatmeal Oatmeal is one of those things that you love or you hate. Some people can eat it every morning and never get tired of it while others take one look at the goopy substance, and run in the other direction. Oatmeal is a humble food, comprised of mainly oats, water or milk, and a pinch of salt. I am one of the traditional oatmeal lovers of the world, but sometimes I feel that I need a little bit more to wake me up in the mornings. If you feel the same, or are just looking for a chance to bring more pizzazz to your breakfast, here are our go-to tips and tricks on how to spice up your morning meal.

Feel like banana bread?

Want something tropical? Slice mango and pineapple (or defrost frozen chunks from Trader Joe’s) Prepare oatmeal with coconut water instead of milk or regular water Top oatmeal with mango and pineapple

Mash 1 ripened banana (substitute blueberries for “blueberry muffin” oatmeal) Prepare oatmeal as usual, but BEFORE putting it into the microwave, add mashed banana Cook oatmeal Top with cinnamon, nutmeg, honey, and granola for an extra crunch

Are you a chocolate lover? Prepare oatmeal with chocolate milk or just milk and cocoa powder Top with berries, peanut butter, more chocolate, or any combination of the three!

That was a typical reaction to work I was reporting at the time on teenage sleep patterns and their effect on performance at school. Six years on, there is growing acceptance that the structure of the academic day needs to take account of adolescent sleep patterns. The latest school to adopt a later start time is the UCL Academy in London; others are considering following suit.

The amount of sleep teenagers get varies between countries, geographic region, and social class, but all studies show they are going to bed later and not getting as much sleep as they need because of early school starts.

So what are the facts about teenage slumber, and how should society adjust to these needs? The biology of human sleep timing, like that of other mammals, changes as we age. This has been shown in many studies. As puberty begins, bedtimes and waking times get later. This trend continues until 19.5 years in women and 21 in men. Then it reverses. At 55 we wake at about the

Your Mind

10 Ways to Wake Up with a Smile Live. Laugh. Be Happy. 1.

Don’t start with profundities. When I began my Happiness Project, I realized pretty quickly that, rather than jumping in with lengthy daily meditation or answering deep questions of self-identity, I should start with the basics, like going to sleep at a decent hour and not letting myself get too hungry. Science backs this up; these two factors have a big impact on happiness.

2.

Do let the sun go down on anger. I had always scrupulously aired every irritation as soon as possible, to make sure I vented all bad feelings before bedtime. Studies show, however, that the notion of anger catharsis is poppycock. Expressing anger related to minor, fleeting annoyances just amplifies bad feelings, while not expressing anger often allows it to dissipate.

3.

Fake it till you feel it. Feelings follow actions. If I’m feeling low, I deliberately act cheery, and I find myself actually feeling happier. If I’m feeling angry at someone, I do something thoughtful for her and my feelings toward her soften. This strategy is uncannily effective.

4. Realize that anything worth doing is worth doing

7. Don’t insist on the best. There are two types of decision makers. Satisficers (yes, satisficers) make a decision once their criteria are met. When they find the hotel or the pasta sauce that has the qualities they want, they’re satisfied. Maximizers want to make the best possible decision. Even if they see a bicycle or a backpack

8. Exercise to boost energy. I knew, intellectually, that this

worked, but how often have I told myself, “I’m just too tired to go to the gym”? Exercise is one of the most dependable mood-boosters. Even a 10-minute walk can brighten my outlook.

9.

Stop nagging. I knew my nagging wasn’t working particularly well, but I figured that if I stopped, my husband would never do a thing around the house. Wrong. If anything, more work got done. Plus, I got a surprisingly big happiness boost from quitting nagging. I hadn’t realized how shrewish and angry I had felt

10. Take action. Some people assume happiness is mostly

a matter of inborn temperament: You’re born an Eeyore or a Tigger, and that’s that. Although it’s true that genetics play a big role, about 40 percent of your happiness level is within your control. Taking time to reflect, and making conscious steps to make your life

badly. Challenge and novelty are key elements of happiness. The brain is stimulated by surprise, and successfully dealing with an unexpected situation gives a

5. Don’t treat the blues with a “treat.” Often the

things I choose as “treats” aren’t good for me. The pleasure lasts a minute, but then feelings of guilt and loss of control and other negative consequences deepen the

6. Buy some happiness. Our basic psychological

needs include feeling loved, secure, and good at what we do. You also want to have a sense of control. Money doesn’t automatically fill these requirements, but it sure can help. I’ve learned to look for ways to spend money to stay in closer contact with my family and friends; to

This isTrish.

A powerful, though-provoking, talented, driven, and enthusuaiastic fashion goddess.. Whose worked with celebrities like Selena Gomez and Sara Bareilles on their outfits for the VMA’s and the AMA’s. And she’s only 18. s been fun, I’m not going to lie. During the past three weeks in Toronto, you’ve never had to wonder what you’re going to talk about at a party. Restaurants have had fun coming up with crack burgers and Ford desserts and other Ford-themed comestibles of all kinds. (To turn any food item “Ford-themed” simply dust it with powdered sugar.) I’ve already bought myself a “Probably in One of my Drunken Stupors” t-shirts; they were sold out of “I’ve got more than enough to eat at home.” Tomorrow, the front page story of the Star will have the following lede: Mayor Rob Ford’s habit of doing drugs with gang members led to him being targeted in an apparent extortion plot related to the crack cocaine video and possibly a series of photographs of him in compromising situations, newly released police documents say. I mean, how much better can the morning paper get? The whole of the Ford story has been pretty damn fascinating. The comedians’ take on his story has been extensive and often hilarious. But today, all the comedy came to a sudden end. It’s too bad. But I just can’t laugh about Rob Ford anymore. The latest revelations about Rob Ford aren’t as overtly scandalous as the ones that came before. They would, of course, have sunk any other elected official in the world, but when a man has admitted to smoking crack and then spoken in Jade // v.1 // 20

The Jade Girl of the Month is not only awesome just like you, but is hand picked and chosen by readers! This month, we searched through our emails sifted tweet by tweet until we found someone who embodied everything you are. Cool, hip, fashionable and driven. Our girl is taking the fashion world by storm, and she’s only 18! public about eating his wife’s pussy, he doesn’t have a whole lot of shameful surprises left to offer. The new police reports claim that he was doing heroin. So what? At least heroin just makes you nod off. Which is better than this.

One day I walked into my mothers scrap closet, took out a bunch of fabrics and made a jacket. I used tape. I used glue, I played with the needle for a bit but I couldn’t get it to work, so i used staples. I just kind of made things happen. The best advice I can give, is if you really want to do something, just do it.

Then there was the news that the mayor of the city stayed in a wellknown crack house from one in the morning to six, and then went out to a city event to clean up a park where he declared, in a deeply exhausted voice, These last two facts are starting to press in on the Rob Ford story. Why the Police have not arrested the mayor at this point is a matter of some speculation. Is their evidence less than perfect? Are they worried they can’t make a charge stick? Or are they waiting to press a more serious crime? I assume that the police

chief was as surprised as anybody that the mayor chose not to resign after having the existence of a crack-smoking tape confirmed by the police. But that doesn’t alter the truth that we now have a genuine gangster in office. And it also doesn’t alter the fact that the police had no problem arresting 44 people, mostly Somali, in Operation Traveller in June. The reason I can’t laugh about Rob Ford anymore is that he has become a threat to the basic assumptions that allow politics to function. If this guy isn’t in jail, why bother having police at all? Why not just round up poor people whenever powerful people get the urge? The least we can do, it seem to me, is let everyone currently serving a sentence for drug use out of prison. Otherwise, the whole system is pure hypocrisy. Rob Ford is a threat to the still scared idea of equality under the law. Not even Will Ferrell could make that funny. As the social media manager for Teen Vogue, a lot of people tell me I have their “dream job.” I’m flattered, of course, but honestly, it’s my dream job too! Tweeting (and Facebooking, and Instagramming, etc.) for the magazine is awesome, but before I was pulling the strings behind @TeenVogue, I got my start wearing a decidedly smaller pair of heels. Although you might not remember Barbie and Ken’s breakup in 2004 (they kept it pretty quiet), you may recall their epic reunion in February of 2011—I cer-

tainly do. I was a graduate student in New York, pursuing a degree in media and popular culture, when the cute and creative campaign caught my eye. From billboards to blogs (and even my favorite cupcake place), it seemed like my childhood companion was suddenly everywhere. Looking for a way to translate my somewhat unconventional degree into a career, I quickly turned to the internet to find out everything I could about Barbie and Ken’s highly visible new romance. Some easy searching led me to a blog post about the campaign, posted by a member of Barbie’s social media team (of course she has one!). I sent an email to the writer, explaining how much I loved the campaign and inquiring about internship opportunities with her company. Shortly thereafter, I found myself interviewing for a position at the digital agency that managed the many facets of Barbie and Ken’s “roman-tech” courtship, centered around the aptly URL’ed website BarbieAndKen.com. I started interning in March, and was hired full-time upon graduating that sprisummer internship apost-grad internship you’re after and you reach out early enough, the company may contact you about entry-level positions that open up while you’re finishing school. Dream big, think small. Although Barbie is a global icon, the digital agency where I worked had less than 50 employees when I started! The projects I worked on there were much more interesting than my responsibilities as an intern at larger companies. I Jade // v1 // 21

One of her friends found herself effectively exiled from their circle for six months because her parents dawdled in upgrading her to an iPhone. Without it, she had no access to the iMessage group chat, where it seemed all their shared plans were being made. “She wasn’t in the group chat, so we stopped being friends with her,” Casey says. “Not because we didn’t like her, but we just weren’t in contact with her.” On a recent Thursday, Casey and her friends are up texting on iMessage until midnight, then they pick up again around 7 a.m., when they wake for school. Yahoo has in its sights young people with disposable income, still-evolving spending habits and a willingness to devote virtually unlimited amounts of time to staring at a screen. In short, Yahoo is trying to gain access to people like Casey. The typical teen girl will send and receive 165 text messages in a day, according to a 2012 report by the Pew Research Center. Casey’s texting continues even when she and her friends are together. “We’ll be sitting on a couch next to each other, texting each other,” she notes. “We text in the same room. It’s weird, I don’t know why.” As we chat in her lime-and-lavender painted room, surrounded by soccer trophies and a framed collage of Justin Bieber photos, Casey alternates between checking her phone, which buzzes incessantly with a steady stream of texts, freshing her Instagram. Like many of her friends, Casey has a tendency to embrace social media sites, then suddenly drop them. Skype, Formspring and WhatsApp: All three have suffered this fate. Casey still uses Snapchat, but less than she did last year, and in the span of three months, she’s joined, quit, and rejoined Twitter. She’s collected banished apps into a folder on her phone labeled “Stuff Nobody Likes.” And she’s thought about deleting her Facebook account because she checks it so

“I’ll wake up in the morning and go on Facebook just … because,” Casey says. “It’s not like I want to or I don’t. I just go on it. I’m, like, forced to. I don’t know why. I need to. Facebook takes up my whole life.” Inseparable from her iPhone, but apt to tire of the sites she uses it to access, Casey at once personifies why much of the technology world has become obsessed with capturing the attention of people her age, and why those efforts risk turning into expensive debacles. That teens’ friendships and relationships will play out online is certain. But which site will host that social intrigue is constantly up for grabs. Casey’s habits underscore a new reality for this networked generation: Social networks -- and the gadgets they run on -- aren’t a distraction from real life, but a crucial extension of it. Not including those sent in the private, one-on-one chats Casey also kept going during the day.

You’re too young to fall in love and other fallacies Your Questions Am I too young to fall in love What is love? Can I fall out of love? How do I know if I’m in love? Does being in love mean I have to be in a relaionship

The Answers ESQ: You’re a busy man — My Morning Jacket’s sixth record, a live concert film the night of its release, a full tour, plus festivals, and now you’ve got this solo album. Which sounds like the most interesting part of it all, actually. JIM JAMES: Yeah, it’s coming along. It’s been one of those things where — are you familiar with the Sly and the Family Stone album, There’s a Riot Going On? ESQ: Sure. With the red, white, and black American flag.

JJ: I read that he just rented a house somewhere and made the album casually, as he was doing other things. He was in his house

Jade // v.1 // 26

Something tells me you were doing a little more than smoking a cigar and singing. I imagine you were playing one or two or twelve different instruments, too. ESQ:

JJ: [Laughs] Yeah, I just wanted to do something fun, just play whenever I wanted to and just play everything I felt — all different kinds of instruments, messing around with everything. ESQ: Nice. So now that you’ve done another album with the group, and something on your own, would you ever consider doing a collaboration along the lines of Monsters of Folk? Where has that gone since we last talked to you and Conor Oberst and M. Ward about it here in New York? You guys still keep in touch about all

that? JJ: Yeah, we keep in touch all the time. That sort of thing is all a matter of time, because everybody’s so busy. I’m sure when the stars align hopefully ESQ: So, back to Circuital. You were recently in town here, celebrating the band’s canon by playing one of one of your records live, in chronological order, each night for a week. Where

you in love?

JJ: For me it represents patience. We just feel, as a band, very calm right now, very peaceful. I don’t want to say it’s a reaction against the modern way of life and the speed of technology and stuff, but in some ways it is. I feel like we just wanted to make a record that was concise but patient within itself — not in a hurry to go anywhere. It does move along from track to track. Some people I’ve spoken to describe it as “a grower.” But others are excited that the first single is fucking seven minutes and twenty-seven seconds long. Are you ever worried when you slow down a beat, that mass audiences will have trouble keeping up? Or are you even worried about mass audiences at this point, given your fanbase? ESQ:

JJ: The old rule is always the same: Every time you put out a record, somebody hates it and somebody loves it. That’s pretty much out of your control. We just had so much fun doing it. I look at it and smile every time I think about it.

If you can call sweating your way through an abandoned gymnasium fun, I guess. But that’s good that you’re not too worried about where it goes beyond what you can do. I was talking to Wayne Coyne the other day about the Flaming Lips and they’ve gdo? ESQ:

JJ: The live recording is definitely a way for a song to grow. I’m just such a fan of an album, you know? I feel like releasing one song at a time and all that — for me the world’s going to split it all up into tracks anyway the world

the love note I wrote him in the 7th grade. MMT Today, it’s been over ten years since I was a bag boy at a local grocery store. On Sunday mornings I held the front door open for our customers and greeted them. One particular older woman loved me for it. She actually told me on several occasions that one day I would make a lovely husband. This afternoon, I walked into that grocery store holding my wife’s hand and the same old woman was on her way out. She held the door for us, winked and said, “I told you so.” MMT Today, my wife and I sat down and watched the same movie at the same time. Despite being 9,000+ miles apart overseas on active duty, I felt like she was sitting right by me and I suddenly didn’t feel so alone. MMT Today, it’s been five years since I adopted a puppy from a high kill shelter that had no time left. Since then I have developed a moderate case of a neurological disease that causes seizures. Believe it or not, the dog is able to detect my seizures before I know. She starts barking hysterically, and keys me into my episode before it starts. So today she is my service dog. The life I saved is saving me every day MMT. Today, it’s been 28 years since a firefighter saved my life when he rescued me from a burning condo build-

Today, my dad came home with roses for my mom and I. “What are these for I asked?” He said that several of his coworkers were complaining about their wives and children today. He realized how lucky he was that after 20 years of marriage, and raising a daughter for the last 17 years, he still had nothing to complain about. MMT

Today, when I asked my grandfather for some relationship advice, he said, “Honestly, the moment I stopped trying to find the right woman, and started trying to become the right man, your grandmother walked up to me and said, ‘Hello.’” MMT Today, it’s been 10 years since I told my best friend Diego that I wouldn’t be able to attend the prom with him because my family was struggling to make ends meet and couldn’t afford to buy me a ticket or a dress. Diego ended up buying me a dress and a ticket, and helping my folks out with money by helping my dad, who had been unemployed for six months, find a good job. Ten years, a marriage, and one kid later, Diego still MMT. Today, on our 50th wedding anniversary, my husband took out an old envelope and handed me back

Turn that Closet into Cash with a Working Girls App Looks like sell-your-own-fashion app Poshmark has been keeping some bigname celebrity investors tucked away in its pocket. Unlike your startup, Poshmark didn’t want to yell names like major fashion icon and reality star Rachel Zoe; Madonna manager Guy Oseary; or actor and investor Ashton Kutcher (who all contributed to Poshmark’s second round of funding) from the roof tops. Because that’s just cheesy, and Poshmark wanted to prove itself outside the fame.
