NORTHERN vs AUCKLAND QBE STADIUM FT3 21 OCTOBER 7:30PM

MATCH DAY PROGRAMME PRINTED BY:

WELCOME Nearly 12 months ago, Northern lifted the National Women’s League trophy after an exciting final in Christchurch. Now the team are back, and are looking to mount a strong challenge to retain the title. The campaign started last week with a trip to Palmerston North to face Central, a tricky first encounter for a new look Northern who only have six returning members from last years squad. Central started the match strongly applying pressure to an experienced Northern back-line featuring Women’s Knockout Cup hero Tessa Berger and Northland FC’s influential Nicole Stratford, who needed to draw on all their experience to see Northern through the first half. The second half saw a more dominant Northern side pin Central into their own half and expose multiple opportunities in and around the home teams penalty area. Thanks to goals from Kate Loye, Liz Milne and Katie Rood, Northern took home a 0 - 3 win and a crucial three points. Considering seven players made their Northern debut on Sunday the team gelled as well as can be expected and in the second half we were able to control large parts of the game and kick on to get the three points. After a challenging match against Mainland, Auckland will be needing a victory to ensure they are in with a chance of making the finals. Looking ahead to the Battle of the Bridge, we are expecting a real tough challenge from Auckland and with the U-17 players returning from their World Cup in Jordan they are likely to be a stronger side. But it will be a game that both myself and the girls are really looking forward to. Thank you for your support and we hope you enjoy the game! - Chris Acott
