On the aftermarket the exhaust and emission leader Dinex has put itself in a unique position specifically within type approvals with major investments and resources. The first approval was obtained in the beginning of 2020, and since there has been a rapid development. And Dinex is first with the introduction of all Type Approved Euro 6 emission systems.

On the type approval listing Dinex have just over 50 parts approved with 55% of those DPFs (Diesel Particulate Filter), and the rest split pretty evenly between DOC (Diesel Oxidation Catalysts) and SCR (Selective Catalyst Reduction).

Non approved spareparts on the independent aftermarket can cause increase engine loads, higher fuel consumption and damaging downstream components.

Dinex has been in ongoing dialogue with authorities all over Europe, when it comes to regulations, fines and illegal products.

But in spite of the work and big costs concerning type approval and other producers on the aftermarket not having these approvals, Dinex don’t regret the comprehensive approval-work.

In an exclusive interview for IN!SIDE, Alexander Gruzdev, CEO of the international market intelligence company Gruzdev-Analyze, discusses the development of the electric vehicle market, and suggests why, for the next few years, its growth could be stuck in the slow lane. Alexander’s company is based in California, one of the United States’ most ‘electrified’ states.

The EV car parc will inevitably get bigger as the trend towards sustainability and greener living, partly driven by legislation, gathers momentum. However, your research shows there could be some bumps along the road?

Yes, one obvious key factor is the cost of batteries.

Since 2010 the cost of a battery for an EV has decreased by nearly ten times. However, you cannot overlook the fact that lithium, which is used for the battery, is significantly increasing in price.

In addition, its reserves in the world are limited; lithium is available in only a few countries. And, this material is in demand not only to produce automotive batteries but also for the production of batteries widely used in a variety of industries.

According to Bloomberg estimates, lithium has risen in price by 446% over the past year. And according to analysts, this year the demand for this material will increase by 40%, and the cost growth will continue.

The increase in raw material prices cannot be effectively compensated by reducing battery production costs. Therefore, in general, this factor negatively affects the dynamics of sales of electric vehicles.

EVs cost more than ‘ordinary’ cars, but there are incentives to switch. Will these be enough?

Currently, the cost of electric vehicles exceeds the cost of ‘ordinary’ cars, so governments need to act. As the experience of some European countries shows, the sales of such cars directly depend on the effectiveness of implementing programs aimed at stimulating demand for electric vehicles.

Thanks to such programs, the buyer can get an electric car at a more attractive price than a car with a conventional internal combustion engine.

However, considering the increase in the cost of lithium and other raw materials, it can be predicted that, in the future, automakers will not be able to hold down the prices for EVs. Therefore, electric cars will become more expensive. This will require expanding governmental programs aimed at ‘sponsoring’ such sales.

Remember that earlier, many governments announced their intention to completely abandon ‘conventional’ cars by the end of this decade and switch to electric vehicles. However, there are concerns that even before this deadline - and in European countries, this should happen in 2025-2027 - the industry will face a significant shortage of lithium.

As a result, a situation may arise that stated goals for the transition to eco-friendly transport will not be possible.

How is the infrastructure of charging stations developing? What is the position in the USA? This issue was relevant at the global level 3-5 years ago. Currently, the development of charging station infrastructure is no longer a major problem. In large cities where many electric vehicles are concentrated, many office parking lots and shopping malls have charging points.

In the USA, the infrastructure issue is also not acute since most of the population lives in private homes, where they can charge their electric car.However, even if the infrastructure issue is mainly solved, the problem with electricity generation is still acute.

For example, in the summer in California, where electric cars are widespread, there are frequent power outages during the period when people actively use air conditioners.

All this leads us to the second factor that can start to slow down the development of the electric car market — the increase in the cost of ownership.

We are already used to the fact that an electric car is more profitable in terms of cost of ownership than an ICE car.

But it is worth recognizing that the wear of some essential components of an electric vehicle, such as pads and tires, occurs more intensively, which means it requires more frequent replacement and increases maintenance costs. For the moment, the difference in ownership cost is just about 10-15% and continues to decrease.

In such conditions, it will be possible to ensure the necessary growth rates of sales of electric vehicles only under pressure from the governments, like making EVs the only legal cars. An alternative possibility is that countries will postpone the transition to electric transport or expand the vehicles allowed for use due to hybrids or plug-in hybrids.

So how will these factors affect the field of aftersales service of electric vehicles?

It is evident that even though sales of electric cars are growing, they still occupy an insignificant share in the INSIDE EDITION 27 • MARCH 2022

The Coolant Control Hub:

The revolution for thermal management in electric vehicles HELLA has implemented an advanced valve concept based on its high level of system expertise in the areas of fluidics, engines, electronics and software, as well as its interfaces with the cooling- and refrigerant system and its many years of know-how in high-performance electric pumps and actuators. Compact, Lightweight Direct-Drive System to Make In-Wheel Electric Vehicles Closer to a Production Reality Hitachi, Ltd. and Hitachi Astemo, Ltd. have jointly announced the development a compact, lightweight direct-drive system for the increasingly popular EV segment, which combines the motor, inverter and brake into a single unit (Fig. 1). This enables the installation of the entire system into the wheel, thus moving the world one step closer to a zero-emissions society.

The new motor transmits the high drive force necessary to run an EV directly to the wheels and its lightweight design and world-class 2.5 kW/kg power density significantly limit the weight increase traditionally associated with in-wheel units. Moreover, adopting an in-wheel unit does not require a substantial change to the existing configuration of the suspension and other components. Driveshafts and other indirect mechanisms have been eliminated, allowing motor power to be applied directly to EV operation. This reduces energy loss by 30 percent and increases the range on a single charge compared to existing EVs.

Hitachi and Hitachi Astemo will continue research into practical implementation of the technology, which enables more expansive interior and battery installation spaces. In addition to the vehicle control technology it has been developing, Hitachi Astemo will apply the new direct-drive system to its already-extensive, global EV product lineup.

How are you, as a company, reacting to the current developments of the “electrical evolution?”

The bilstein group has been in the mobility business for a long time - longer than the automotive sector has existed - and we have always adapted to new situations to provide what the market requires and create business opportunities.

How do you guarantee the right parts will be in range at all times?

Giving rapid attention to article research on the latest new vehicle releases creates our ‘Fast to Market’ approach. Early identification of OE references provides either an instant connection to an existing article, or triggers a data alert in our product development tools for prioritised new product introductions. INTELLIGENT CHASSIS SYSTEMS: PIONEERING INNOVATIONS FOR AUTONOMOUS MOBILITY Schaeffler is steadily expanding its involvement in autonomous mobility based on intelligent chassis systems. On which technologies do you focus?

Within the last months, Schaeffler has presented a variety of technologies that will pave the way for autonomous driving. Today, I’ll present you three of them. First, our Space Drive 3 Add-ON, which is ready for production. Space Drive transmits driving and steering commands to the vehicle wheels via purely electronic signals, opening the way for autonomous driving. The technology has been proven in the field, with more than a billion accident-free kilometers and is undergoing fine-tuning under extreme conditions in motorsports. Now, the latest generation, Space Drive 3 Add-ON, is ready for small-volume production.

The Space Drive system is triple redundant for maximum safety and meets the exacting functional safety requirements of ISO 26262.

You mentioned a variety of technologies that will pave the way for autonomous driving. What other innovations can we look forward to?

Schaeffler has recently unveiled its force-feedback hand wheel actuator (HWA), a mechatronic solution that replaces the conventional steering wheel and mechanical steering column. This reduces the amount of space required for the steering system and opens up completely new possibilities for the design of cab interiors – such as the ability to stow the wheel in the center console when in (semi-)autonomous driving mode. The system can further suppress undesirable feedback, such as vibrations from uneven road surfaces, and supports variable steering gear ratios, enabling new driving dynamics functions.

Last but not least: Which third new system can we expect?

Schaeffler’s rolling chassis, a modular vehicle platform, which will enable new, driverless mobility solutions for passenger and freight transport. Its flexible architecture supports a broad array of steering and drive variants to suit customer requirements – everything from single electric axles in combination with central steering to implementations incorporating four Schaeffler corner modules. Each one allows a steering angle of up to 90 degrees and comprises a wheel hub motor and a wheel suspension system incorporating air suspension that enables the vehicle to “kneel” for greater ease of access. In addition, it contains an actuator for electromechanical steering and a brake mechanism.

WE NEED TO BE JUST THAT: INNOVATIVE AND SUSTAINABLE The terms "sustainability" and "innovation" have been used inflationarily for some years now. However, if we look at the climate targets that politicians have set themselves, one thing becomes clear: In order to make Germany and Europe greenhouse gas neutral in 2045, we need to be just that: innovative and sustainable.

A transformation is currently taking place in many areas. One of the biggest transformations is taking place in the mobility sector. The automotive industry in particular, with its manufacturers and numerous small, medium and large suppliers, is facing unprecedented challenges. The end of the classic combustion engine has been decided.

From 2035, only electric cars will be allowed to be registered.

The traffic turnaround has been heralded - and that's a good thing. However, there are several problems that we are still ignoring. In theory, the plans sound great, but in practice, the project resembles a mammoth task for two reasons.

For many supplier companies in particular, which have so far manufactured components exclusively for gasoline or diesel engines, the business model is changing completely. Anyone who has still not

taken steps in this direction today will no longer be a participant in the market in a few years, that much is certain.

Until a few years ago, my company was also almost completely dependent on the classic combustion engine. For example, we are the world market leader in cylinder-head gaskets. Unfortunately, this component is no longer needed in e-cars. It is a discontinued model. This is a pity for us, because the cylinder-head gasket has made ElringKlinger famous. Fortunately, however, this does not get us into trouble because we positioned ourselves in the direction of sustainable mobility more than two decades ago.

ElringKlinger has been active in the field of fuel cells for a good 20 years. We can manufacture com-

plete stacks as well as components. A fuel cell stack consists of a specific quantity of bipolar plates.

The finishing and machining processes, such as stamping, embossing and surface finishing, are similar to those used for cylinder-head gaskets and that's how we ultimately came to fuel cells back then. We successfully transferred our knowhow and have continued to research and develop over all these years.

With our joint venture with Plastic Omnium, EKPO Fuel Cell Technologies, we are now driving forward the development and large-scale production of fuel cell stacks for CO2-neutral mobility.

The company is a full-range supplier of fuel cell stacks and components used in cars, light commercial vehicles, trucks, buses and rail and marine applications.

We need the fuel cell if we are to achieve our climate targets. The technology for this comes from us companies. However, the whole thing is doomed to failure if the right framework conditions are not set by policymakers. I therefore expect openness to technology and rapid expansion of the necessary infrastructure. We must finally step on the gas here - otherwise Germany will lose its leading position in the automotive sector in a few years' time. And none of us can want that.

FLUID THINKING Changing requirements in lubricant and coolant technologies have led to a versatile, multipurpose solution The drive toward electrification is impacting every single area of drivetrain development, and lubrication is no exception. In the case of TotalEnergies, the company has been developing a range of dedicated EV fluids, under the brand Quartz EV-Drive MP, able to act as both a transmission lubricant and motor coolant. Hakim El Bahi, a research engineer who specializes in electric and transmission fluids at TotalEnergies, summarizes the challenge of creating such a versatile fluid: “It’s the art of formulation, of balancing properties that sometimes may sound contradictory. It is a new concept.” There are many benefits to a multirole approach to cooling and lubrication, from both a mechanical and electrical efficiency perspective. “With most EVs currently on the market, the motors are cooled indirectly, using a water jacket,” notes El Bahi. This approach has

its limitations when it comes to removing heat from hot spots within the motor; increasingly an issue as manufacturers push smaller motors to higher performance levels. El Bahi highlights the reasons behind this trend toward more power-dense, higher RPM motors. “You can increase the torque or you can increase the speed, but if you do want to increase the torque you have to increase the size of your machine. So, instead of increasing the torque, manufacturers increase the speed. But by increasing the speed you’re increasing heat loss and with that come problems in cooling. ”The answer lies in being able to feed the coolant directly to areas such as the motor windings; using the transmission fluid, which is a dielectric, seemed an ideal solution. As El Bahi outlines, “If you can put the coolant in direct contact with the hot spots of the e-motor, you can

increase the heat extraction. “We thought, let’s use the transmission fluid. It is a dielectric fluid so you can send it to the motor without any fear of short circuits or electrical damage. Now, the fluid is not only a lubricant, it is a coolant as well. That is why we are shifting the vocabulary from lubricants to fluids.

Multiple choice The result is a fluid that is fully capable of lubricating transmission gears and bearings, and electric motor bearings – which, in some vehicle applications, would traditionally rely on dielectric greases – as well as cooling the motor windings. Friction reduction in the electric motor and transmission, combined with greater cooling potential for the motor – enabling higher power outputs to be achieved – will ultimately lead to an increase in overall vehicle efficiency and thus range. Of course, creating a fluid that can meet these opposing requirements to the correct standards was not easy. Considerations such as the heat capacity of the fluid, its viscosity, wear reduction properties and compatibility with the various components it meets all had to be balanced. Of course, every manufacturer will have its own specific motor and transmission architectures, each requiring a different cooling and lubrication strategy. El Bahi explains that there is scope for customization of the latest product: “The idea with Quartz EV Fluid was to design a kind of platform because we know the direction of trends in electric vehicles for lubrication and cooling purposes. However, when working with OEMs, we can start with this platform and design a tailor-made solution, because each will have their own specific requirements.” It is efforts such as TotalEnergies’ that will drive the efficiency of next-generation EVs, and the company is already looking at areas in addition to motors and transmissions where its EV Fluids can be deployed.

The acceptance of e-vehicles has increased significantly in recent months thanks to new government regulations and incentives, a more sophisticated battery technology, and an attractive range of new vehicle models. This will also change the aftermarket, as Markus Schmitt, Head of Service and Network Passenger Cars at ZF Aftermarket.

How would you describe the transformation?

Working on electrified cars is now part of everyday life in automotive workshops. Many technicians have fortunately already acquired the necessary qualifications - for example at ZF Aftermarket.

Service on e-vehicles may only be performed by personnel who have been specially trained for this purpose: We offer training for all levels of high-voltage competence, up to and including the ability to carry out work on live components.

At least a level 1 high-voltage qualification is required for work on high-voltage systems. In this area, ZF Aftermarket offers both pure online training and training based on the blended learning approach, consisting of classroom and online training.

How do you make the workshops fit for e-mobility?

The workshops need to have an integral understanding of the entire system, and strong partners by their side to secure their long-term success. ZF is such a strong partner working as the technology leader in driveline and chassis technology as well as active and passive safety. With our training offer, we are taking workshops a decisive step further towards Next Generation Mobility and future technologies. The different functions in a workshop also require different knowledge. Just two examples: We have a new basic training to become a "Vehicle Electrics Expert" which includes knowledge of control technology, data communication as well as sensors and actuators and their testing.

In addition, we developed a training "Fit for e-mobility as a manager". The workshop owner does not actually carry out the work himself, but he needs to know the most important information on handling e-vehicles, necessary safety measures, qualifications, and equipment.

What product offers do you have in the area of e-mobility?

ZF and CATL signed a strategic partnership agreement. How do you rate that from your point of view as Global Head of Service?

We are proud to complement our aftermarket competencies with those of one of the world's leaders in new energy. Together with CATL we will bring the global footprint and leading service solutions of ZF Aftermarket further into play. Just one example for the already started collaboration: CATL will provide ZF with comprehensive battery training know-how, which will be combined with ZF’s DGUV high voltage training to enhance the competitiveness of its training programs.

Would you recommend such kinds of partnerships also for workshops?

We are entering into a new era where collaboration will be key to success. This is also valid for workshops. Collaboration across different fields of expertise will become growingly important to face this increased complexity. This can be on a local level – for example with the local insurance agent.

In my role as Head of Network Passenger Cars, I also know how important a workshop concept is as a strong partner. With workshop concept like ZF

To be fair, e-mobility does not yet play a decisive role in today’s aftermarket and I don’t expect any fundamental changes over the next few years. Plus, we are already well prepared for the filtrati-

on needs of future mobility solutions, as we are in the advantageous position of being able to transfer our decades of experience in filtration to the requirements of new systems. What about filtration within E-mobility?

Whether powered by combustion engines in the past or battery-electric, fuel cell or synthetic fuels in the future, our filtration solutions are an important step on the way to cleaner mobility. And one thing is certain: cleaner mobility also requires

MAINTENANCE OF BRAKING SYSTEMS IN NEW-GENERATION CARS Today, electric and hybrid vehicles use regenerative braking in addition to traditional dissipative braking, resulting in less use of the friction brake than a car with a combustion engine.

However, regenerative braking has its own applicability, which depends on the total battery capacity and the battery capacity available at the time of use. In general, for Mild Hybrid and Full Hybrid cars, regenerative braking has very little influence on the use of conventional brakes due to the reduced battery capacity; while it has a moderate influence on plug-in cars and an important influence on electric cars.

In addition, cars with high regenerative braking, i.e. electric and plug-in cars, can make the most of their characteristics in driving situations where acceleration/slowing down

(city driving) or uphill/downhill (mountain driving) prevail. In addition, regenerative braking cannot generate the same braking power as dissipative (frictional) braking. Therefore, not only in emergency braking, but also in other modes of use, dissipative braking is always necessary for electric cars.

Today, most hybrid and electric cars use carry-over braking systems from equivalent conventional models. This means that, particularly for electric cars, these braking systems are oversized for normal car use and the actuation components will wear very little.

However, three key points should be highlighted. In electric and hybrid cars, weight reduction is a key factor, because it allows the car's range, one of the most critical points, to be increased.

Moreover, car manufacturers, together with brake system manufacturers, are revising the design standards for these braking systems. This is done, among other things, to be able to lighten the braking system and consequently the car, increasing its driving range. However, the maximum performance of the dissipative braking system must be maintained, which must be able to function optimally even without regenerative braking.

Finally, with regard to the replacement of braking components of electric cars, one of the main causes will be deterioration, that can be caused by oxidation due to lack of use. A factor that seems to be particularly relevant in countries with harsher and rainier climates.

Manufacturers are reacting by trying to develop technological solutions suitable for this type of vehicle. In particular, the most important solutions concern: lightness, reduce of noise and residual torque, corrosion and friction material.

The lightweight design of discs, brake pads and calipers makes it possible to reduce the weight of unsprung masses, thereby reducing consumption. For an electric vehicle, this means, above all, greater autonomy.

Brake noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) are key parameters for modern cars, especially in the premium segment of the market. Even more so in a quiet vehicle like an electric car, where brake noise is not allowed.

In an electric vehicle, residual torque has a much greater influence than in a standard car, as it affects the vehicle's energy balance, reducing its range.

As the braking system is used less frequently, special care is needed to prevent excessive corrosion of brake discs and pads.

The friction material must guarantee a high and stable coefficient, even if the braking system has undergone long periods of inactivity.

Putting all these characteristics together, it is clear that the brakes must be developed specifically for electric vehicles, with very good possibilities for innovation in relation to corrosion prevention, friction materials and lightness.

As far as maintenance is concerned, it is very important to check for corrosion and possible deterioration of the components. The proper functioning of the brake caliper and the possible replacement of deteriorated components must be carried out promptly so as not to compromise the operation and safety of the system.

Intelligent, connected, safe: The Future of Brakes Brake systems are becoming increasingly intelligent so they can meet the future needs of a modern E/E vehicle architecture. Continental, one of the largest original equipment manufacturers worldwide, actively shapes the future of tomorrows brake systems. Its aftermarket brand ATE supplies the independent aftermarket with premium brake products and services.

Brakes are the single most important element of active driving safety. So far, they have primarily been mechanical systems with vacuum brake boosters and hydraulic power transmission from the brake pedal to the wheel brake. Electronic safety systems, such as the anti-lock brake system, ensure that the brakes proactively contribute to the driving safety in borderline situations even without driver intervention. In addition, brakes must now also contribute to vehicle efficiency by helping to prevent CO2 emissions or even particulate emissions during friction braking.

With more functions added, the vehicle architecture became a complex network of dozens of dedicated Electronic Control Units (ECUs). However, to realize a modern E/E architecture, single functions such as the anti-lock brake system need to be integrated in a more centralized structure, in which there is one high performance computer responsible per domain (e.g. infotainment, Driving Assistance). This architectural revolution of motion control has already begun – one recent example: Continental has supplied VW’s e-car ID.3 with the world’s first mass-produced high-performance server for cars.

Brake-by-wire technology An important development for brake systems in terms of assisted and automated driving functions as well as the electrification of vehicles is the switch from hydraulic to electromechanical

actuation (brake-by-wire). The first existing electrohydraulic brake-by-wire brake system named MK C1 by Continental went in production in 2016. The MK C1 as well as its successor, the MK C2, build up brake pressure faster than any conventional hydraulic system and do not require any brake booster or vacuum pump. While the brake feeling is simulated for the driver, dosage of the maximum braking power does not depend on the force in the foot. In case of an emergency braking, the actual braking request comes from the automation or an assistance system and takes instant action.. Furthermore, in 80 percent of deceleration situations in electric or hybrid cars, recuperative braking can help to recharge the battery while the pedal feels completely normal to the driver.

Eliminating the hydraulic system step by step The MK C1 by Continental was only the first step towards a true brake-by-wire technology operating the rear axle wheel brakes electromechanically. In theory, if all four wheel brakes are actuated electromechanically (“dry”), this could entirely eliminate the hydraulic system. The current focus on pressure generation and modulation with appropriate control intelligence would then no longer be necessary. As this is a future scenario on how the brake system can be designed in the future, there is still some time until true brake-by wire technology and the elimination of the hydraulic system become relevant for daily business in the workshops.

Looking at the global electric car parc, the development is enormous. And of course, this number is only growing. Although electric vehicles do not have a combustion engine, they still require cooling parts to cool the battery and power electronics. And since they are all equipped with an air conditioning system, they all need the required A/C parts. The aftermarket for these vehicles is also growing. NRF also proves to be a leading supplier in this specific segment.

Cooling of the battery and power electronics In an electric vehicle, the cooling system is regulating the temperature of the battery pack and some of the electronics. The coolant is circulated through batteries and some of the electronics, using an electric pump. This cooling system contains a radiator for the heat transfer. Next to a radiator, these vehicles are also equipped with

a radiator fan. When the vehicle isn’t moving, the radiator fan provides the additional airflow which is needed to prevent overheating.

A/C system in electric cars Like normal modern engine powered cars, electric cars also have an air conditioning system. In traditional vehicles, the engine provides the power for the HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) system. At electric cars, they use electricity.

Electricity is used to power the compressor for example. For the heater often an electric heater is used. Because these parts are electrically powered, the vehicle range will reduce when the AC system is operating.

Eric Schuler: We see two major revolutions that will be having an outstanding impact on our aftermarket business: vehicle electrification and digitalisation.

Indeed, today, automotive is experiencing a radical shift towards electric vehicles. With CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) regulations becoming more global, with an increasing number of cities and states banning diesel cars in the next few years, with China imposing quotas of 40% purely electric vehicles by 2030, and with car makers significantly developing their EV offer (there are already more than 200 electric models available in 2021), we are seeing a drastic shift in the vehicle sales mix going from less than 5% for EV worldwide in 2020 to an estimated 68% by 2030.

Michel Forissier: Valeo is N°1 worldwide for electrical systems. One car out of every 3 on the planet is equipped with a Valeo solution. THE ROLE OF 12 VOLT BATTERIES IN ELECTRIC VEHICLES

Dr. Rosenkranz, as Vice President Industry and Governmental Relations EMEA at Clarios, you probably know everything there is about battery technology. Can you tell us, why modern electric or hybrid electric vehicles also have a 12 Volt lead-acid battery on board? We were under the impression that the high voltage lithiumion battery would power the car.

The high-voltage Li-Ion battery powers the drivetrain and the propulsion system, but not the whole car and it’s electrical power net. The internal electrical 14V power net system with its comfort and critical safety features is powered mainly by the 12 Volt battery, also known as an auxiliary battery.

It works as a secondary power source for

the vehicle electrical system and ensures that an electric vehicle maintains its functionality during driving but also during key-off overnight parking when the high-voltage battery is disconnected from the drive train.

Can you give us an example?

Of course. First off, it does not perform a starter function, but it supplies the onboard computer, which ultimately controls the high-voltage battery. If the 12 Volt battery is discharged, the on-board computer cannot start up. Thus, the frequency converter is not activated and starting is impossible.

The 12 Volt battery also serves as a buffer to create redundancy for functional safety aspects. In the event of a failure of the high-voltage propulsion lithium-ion battery,

the auxiliary battery takes over and powers the safety features of the vehicle to enable the car to safely pull over. For example, power steering and brake boosting must work at all times to maintain manoeuvrability.

Finally, auxiliary batteries are also essential for a vehicle’s comfort features such as radio, sound systems, and even the interior light, which may also prove crucial in an emergency. All these factors call for a reliable, high-performance power supply.

But why use lead-acid technology?

Isn't Lithium-ion superior?

Lithium-ion technology is often considered the successor of lead-acid when it comes to battery technology. However, it is not as inherently robust as other rechargeable technologies and requires continuous monitoring. Lithium-ion cells need protection from being overcharged and deep discharge.

Special protection circuitry is mandatory to maintain the voltage within safety limits.

Additionally, the cell temperature distribution must be controlled by either passive or active cooling systems. Overall, it is a very sophisticated technology.

Lead-acid batteries, on the other hand, are known to be both reliable and affordable.

Their wide operational temperature window intrinsically enhances the operational robustness of the entire system. The safety record of lead-acid batteries makes them invaluable for Europe’s future low-emission mobility sector.

Lifecycle analysis of a vehicle’s environmental impact shows that lead-acid has a lower impact compared to other technologies: From a production and supply standpoint, lead-acid batteries are domestically produced in Europe for all target markets. This independence from global supply structures is due to the established and well-maintained recycling industry, where almost 80% of material in a new VARTA lead-acid battery comes from recycling. This is one of the leading examples of a circular economy in Europe.

Overall, it is safe to say that the unique benefits of lead-acid technology will be important to meet growing consumer expectations for safety, comfort, and connectivity.

ELECTRIFICATION IS HERE AND HERE TO STAY Things are going to look a whole lot different.

We can argue when it will start impacting our business, but for sure it will.

An internal combustion engine (ICE) has about 2000 moving parts, an electric car has less than 50 moving components! Car maintenance services will become much less frequent, and most will just make sure all is o.k.

This means that many of the product we are currently selling, will slowly fade away or will be consumed much less. We cannot fight these trends. Nothing we can do to stop them or stall them. But there is a lot we can do once we acknowledge it's coming soon.

It's now the time to ack! There are endless ways to act. I will just put few of them just to show you, you can do it and move forward.

Workshops are stuck. Not prepared for the new age. They will need training. You must use Nexus Academy to position yourself as the one who helped them most in the transition.

Many new "car maker" will arise, whether Chinese or European, most of which do not have logistics, nor a garage network. Build and enforced your NexusAuto Garage concept, you could become those car makers service-provider, both as a garage network,logistics and also on a technical level.

An Electric car must have a Charging Station.

Find a partner to cooperate with. Charging stations will be needed at every household, naturally, but also at every workshop. Charging cable comes with it. Start selling it. EV Batteries will become a major product category. Start being involved in it, think of EV battery maintenance, replacing cells will become big volumes.

Let's not forget that we are currently all about parts…do not forget to position yourself as the best option for EV parts. Make an inquiry with all your suppliers, which parts they have for EVs, start informing the market, position yourself as the TOP EV supplier.

No doubt things will be much more digital. Digital Services will start emerging and we need to start implementing them. Start-up world and new initiative are all around us. Use Mobilion Ventures and adopt at least one start up that would match your business, your contacts or your close circles.

Dare to go to places you never were in, software, digital, it all comes to bringing value to your customers and to your customer's customers.

Schaeffler’s rolling chassis, a modular vehicle platform, will enable new, driverless mobility solutions for passenger and freight transport. Its flexible architecture supports a broad array of steering and drive variants to suit customer requirements – everything from single electric axles in combination with central steering to implementations incorporating four Schaeffler corner modules. Each one allows a steering angle of up to 90 degrees and comprises a wheel hub motor and a wheel suspension system incorporating air suspension that enables the vehicle to “kneel” for greater ease of access. In addition it contains an actuator for electromechanical steering and a brake mechanism.

HWA opens up completely new possibilities Schaeffler has recently unveiled its force-feedback handwheel actuator (HWA), a mechatronic solution that replaces the conventional steering wheel and mechanical steering column. This reduces the amount of space required for the steering system and opens up completely new possibilities for the design of cab interiors – such as the ability to stow the wheel in the center console when in (semi-)autonomous driving mode. The system can further suppress undesirable feedback, such as vibrations from uneven road surfaces, and supports variable steering gear ratios, enabling new driving dynamics functions.

In recent surveys, Delphi Technologies Aftermarket asked customers around the world what

they perceived as their biggest challenge when it comes to electrified vehicles. A third* were concerned about keeping up with the latest technology and when we look back to the past we can begin to understand why.

Gasoline Port Fuel Injection (PFI) was followed by the introduction of Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI), diesel injection saw the advent of high performance, common rail (CR) technology. Hydraulic power steering systems were superseded by electronic power steering (EPS) technology, all these innovations were incremental in nature and therefore easier for workshops to embrace the shifting tech, bit-by-bit.

However, the adaptation to electrification is taking workshops in new into unfamiliar territory.

The latter integrates speed and position sensors that are already equipping ABS/ESP systems, as well as the electric motors of hybrid or 100% electric vehicles of the Group's clients. These very same sensors will enable embedded diagnostics and predictive maintenance on vehicles in the future.

From the outset, NTN has always focused on the mechanical and energy performance of its products. The Group brings innovative solutions to this new challenge of electrification. For example, it has developed specific hybrid ceramic ball

bearings for electric geared motors, along with two new generation 3 wheel-bearings that meet the specific charging and space constraints of electric vehicles: • A lighter, bi tapered bearing module to help counteract the increased weight of the batteries on the axle.

• A particularly compact double-row ball bearing module with an associated transmission seal. This enables a saving of almost 35 mm on each wheel, reducing the axial space requirement and facilitating the installation of the motor, its gearbox, and equipment within a very tight space. The turning radius is also significantly improved.
