Barnbougle Dunes Bridport, Tasmania Tom Doak & Mike Clayton (2004) 6,148 metres, par-71
GREEN FEE: $99; $130 for an all-day pass CONTACT: (03) 6356 0094; www.barnbougledunes.com.au COMMENT: She is the Mt Everest of Australian public-access golf. Our Usain Bolt. Our “Nessun dorma” or Mona Lisa. Barnbougle Dunes is once again the undisputed No.1 venue in the land for pay-as-you-play golf and it’s difficult to see it being unseated from the summit. (Perhaps its only true threat resides just over the Great Forester River at Lost Farm.) She is moody, vibrant and challenging – volatile in those capricious Bass Strait winds and possessed of multiple personalities. On a calm day this course is imminently conquerable; in foul weather it is downright diabolical. And therein lies the reason we love her so much: you just don’t know which dress Barnbougle Dunes is going to wear, which is also why golfers from around the globe keep coming back.
