BORN THIS GAY?

Why the nature vs. nurture debate is irrelevant When it comes to gay rights.

ast month, Gallup released some recent polling data that confirmed that Americans are still significantly divided on the nature v. nurture debate. According to the Values and Beliefs poll, despite the best efforts of the contemporary gay rights movement—not to mention Lady Gaga—37 percent of Americans still believe that people become homosexual as a result of their environment and upbringing. If these numbers are right, that means that as support for eqaulity gains unprecedented momentum, a large number of U.S. citizens reject one of the movement’s fundamental tenets. But should that matter? Why do people care so much whether or not gay people were born this way? It’s a question that seldom gets asked. Case in point: When Madonna called the title track from Lady Gaga’s sophomore album Born This Way “reductive” in 2012 and then refused to explain what exactly she meant (“Look it up,” she curtly told ABC’s Cynthia McFadden), most people thought she was talking about the song’s notorious similarities to her own hit, “Express Yourself.” The pervasive assumption was that she’d misspoken, that she’d meant to say “derivative,” that it was a catty gaffe exposing how dismissive she was of Gaga’s work. But I think she said exactly what

she meant. Besides the fact that it’s pretty offensive to assume that a woman doesn’t know what she’s talking about simply because it doesn’t fit into the mass media narrative (“Lady Gaga plagiarizes Madonna!”), it’s extremely short sighted and pretty sexist, to assume that the only thing Madonna could be concerned with is the perceived threat that a younger pop star represents to her. No one at the time seemed to consider that what she might have been calling reductive was actually the philosophy behind “Born This Way.” “It is reductive!” says Suzanna Walters, author of The Tolerance Trap: How God, Genes, and Good Intentions are Sabotaging Gay Equality. Not everyone, she argues, experiences the kind of certainty at such a young age that the“born this way” message implies. “I actually find it disre-

“Mostly, you look for the cause of something because you want to find a cure.” spectful to the depth and complexity of human sexuality,” she says. Despite recent research suggesting the existence of a “gay gene,” Walters also finds the science behind the “born this way” argument dubious. “It’s often based on presumptions about gender that are themselves problematic,” she explains. Biological determinism, she’s quick to point out, has historically been used to justify genocide and the oppression of women. And there aren’t a lot of scientists out there looking for the “straight gene,” which, she says, “should tell us a little bit about the politics of this kind of research. Mostly, you look for the cause of something because you want to find a cure.” Most importantly, however, Walters argues that a position rooted in biological determinism has no place in the fight for civil rights. “You can’t say, ‘Give me my rights because I can’t help myself.’‘Give me my rights because I have a compulsion,’” she insists. “You do it on the basis of ethics, of law, of equality, of your values.”

In other words, if we can all agree that homosexuality is morally and ethically neutral, the question of whether people choose to be gay or are born with that predisposition is politically irrelevant. So why has the contemporary gay rights movement adopted “Born This Way” as its position? The short answer, Walters says, is because it’s an effective strategy. La Bare Shows Skin and Heart

The new documentary explores the club that inspired Magic Mike.

role he takes with the club’s younger dancers warms the heart while also satisfying your fetishized daddy itch. But don’t forget the younger set.The other men of La Bare are criminally sexy, not just for their bodies, but for their carnal passion and skill at what they do. They put on a truly spectacular,Vegas-quality show. You have to be a lot more than a pretty face to make it as a male stripper, and these guys exude expertise. One particular highlight of La Bare is a house call to a supposed bachelorette party. Two of the club’s heartthrobs dress as cowboys and want to make sure the bride-to-be knows how to ride a horse. What ensues is borderline soft-core— definitely enough to make you hot. Lust aside, not all is well in this scantily clad paradise. The film strikes an emotional chord while exploring the murder of one of their own, Ruben “Angelo” Riguero, to whom the film is dedicated. Reflecting on their club brother’s death isn’t the only time these guys show a soft side. In handling their clientele, they adhere to a doctrine of mutual respect; they take what they do very seriously and don’t waste time toying with ladies’minds. Despite what stigmas surrounding the exotic dancing industry imply, these guys have as much heart as they do brawn, and highlighting those traits is where La Bare shines brightest. —Benjamin Lindsay Ian McKellen & Derek Jacobi

Ian McKellen and Derek Jacobi go for the throat as a hilariously catty couple.

here’s something cozily retro about PBS’ latest British import, Vicious, premiering June 29. It’s an old fashion multicamera sitcom at a time when splashy, big budget productions like Doctor Who, Sherlock, and Downton Abbey are pulling in record numbers of viewers for the network. Think Fawlty Towers, Are You Being Served, and Keeping Up Appearances; the kind of laugh track-driven British comedies you might have watched with your grandparents as a kid. Vicious is centered on the dysfunctional

T

oe Manganiello—best known as True Blood’s red-hot werewolf, Alcide Herveaux—gets behind the camera for feature documentary La Bare, opening June 27. La Bare certainly boasts as much sex appeal as HBO’s vamp-tastic series, though the only thing supernatural about it is its smattering of otherworldly torsos and bums. La Bare goes behind the curtain of La Bare Dallas, the world-famous male strip club that inspired Steven Soderbergh’s 2012 indie hit, Magic Mike. The documentary features in-depth interviews with the club’s first-class performers, unveiling a nuanced humanity and camaraderie not immediately apparent in their smoldering stage routines. Manganiello starred in Magic Mike as “Big Dick Richie.”After the gargantuan success of the fictional stripper feature, he was inspired to venture to Dallas to document the real-life stories of Magic Mike’s characters—“who they were, where they lived, how they grew up, who they dated,”Manganiello says in a statement. “What we found was a goldmine.” Within that goldmine is the film and club’s star: Randy “Master Blaster” Ricks, who describes himself as “205 lbs. of twisted steel and sex appeal.” Pushing 60, Ricks is a former competitive bodybuilder who’s been stripping since 1979, and his insight into the industry and the fatherly

relationship between Stuart and Freddie, an older gay couple played by out actors Derek Jacobi and Ian McKellen. The lovebirdsturned-harpies have been together for nearly 50 years. They share a time-ravaged London flat, a catatonic dog, and an aging fag hag named Violet. Jacobi and McKellen spend each episode verbally savaging each other, sniping and bickering with the kind of panache only battle scarred and embittered queens can pull off. They also vie for the attention of their sexy (in a very Welsh kind of way) straight

neighbor, Ash (Iwan Rheon, last seen bathing Alfie Allen’s poor, emasculated Theon Greyjoy on Game of Thrones). As Stuart, Jacobi is the more effete of the pair, delivering his bons mots with fruitier notes, while McKellen’s Freddie is bone dry. Both actors seem to relish their performances, though, and it’s a treat to see them letting loose as these unabashedly catty queens. As Freddie puts it in the premiere,“I never know when I’m going too far, but I’m always glad when I do.” — John Russell

ACH YEAR WE PUT THE CALL OUT for both amateur and professional photographers to submit images that capture the gay experience. It’s a broad premise, obviously, and the photos we receive run the gamut from portraits to slice-of-life candids. This year’s finalists included striking scenes of isolation and alienation (Joe Schmelzer’s photo of a young man in bed staring into the chilly glow of his smartphone; Kreerath Sunittramat’s vision of a casual sexual encounter) as well as moments of cozy domesticity (Richard Vechi’s black and white study of a real live couple’s morning ablutions). Michael Charles Swartz and Jason Russo capture the fun and frivolity of NewYork’s gay nightlife scene, while Rob Ordonez and Davide Laffe give us defiant portraits of people living outside of traditional notions of beauty and gender. We’re also presented with two contrasting images of queer performance: Bryan Cash’s snapshot of a drag show, and Camilo Velez’s silhouetted scene of queens voguing on the Christopher Street pier at sunset. Finally there’s this year’s Pride Photo Contest winner, Argentinian photographer Gastohn Barrios’ ode to trans discrimination, “Fallen Angel.”“The dead body naked symbolizes the deadly social condemnation,”Barrios explains. “It is a sexless body. The red high heels represent their dreams materialized, and the wing drawn on the street shows her as a martyr, a divine creature like all of us. At the same time, it represents the purity of all human beings regardless of their sexual orientation.” N

a Field guide to summer drinking beFore cocktail hour.

he Fourth of July is all about BBQs, beach parties, and other boozy all-day activities. But there’s an art to day drinking, and if you do it wrong you’ll end up just like that messy girl puking on the LIRR. If you do it right, it’s all drunken fun in the sun! Here’s everything you need to know for a day of inebriation. —Mark Dommu

T

Tips For Successful Day Drinking: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly ARIANNA HUFFENSTUFF, DRINKING DRAG QUEEN “Start slow. Plan for a meal. Never play catch up. And end early.”

A Boozy Timeline:

LUCAS CAREY, PERFORMER

DYLAN O’KEEFE, BARTENDER

“Start slamming ’em down early. Avoid food as it takes up valuable alcohol space. Get the liquor in a brown bag or they will arrest you. Avoid friends as they take up valuable drinking time. The nap will plan itself.”

“Plan a lot of gallivanting around the city. Having to pause your drinking to take the subway for 30–40 minutes can help make sure you don’t drink too much too fast.”

Preferably something carb-based: pretzels, crackers, half a bagel. Anything to soak up the booze and keep you from puking.

“This beer tastes like water!”

4:00PM Sobbing at the ATM because you can’t figure out how it works and all you really want is a burrito.

5:00PM A $20 cab ride home? Sure.

SUNGLASSES: They will make it harder for people to tell how wasted you are and give you an air of mystery. Also, summer sunlight hurts when you’re drunk.

SUNBLOCK: There’s nothing worse than getting too drunk to realize how much sun you’re getting and then spending the next day feeling like a boiled lobster.

PAINKILLERS: When you’re hung over by sunset, Extra Strength Tylenol comes in handy.

FOURTH OF JULY FANTASY SATURDAY

JULY 5

FIRE ISLAND

“LET YOUR FANTASY ROME” OUT TO FIRE ISLAND FOR INDEPENDANCE’S 20TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION.

A

Reflections itself is what helps to set IndepenDance apart from the other big Fire Island summer parties. “IndepenDance is still a house party at heart, and probably the only one that remains from what was once a Pines summer tradition,” Scheiner says. “Of course, the sound, lights, and spectacle have grown over the years.” And while a party on this scale could certainly have moved to a commercial venue, Scheiner is happy that it has stayed true to its roots. “It is the vibe that is at once intimate and grand, friends and neighbors, along with new friends and neighbors, gathering to celebrate summer.” “[Twenty years] is a sign of the nature of the community out here in The Pines,” reflects Neary. “A sign that people realize that being able to come to the beach and live in a pretty house on the water and be close to the ocean is a privilege that not everybody has. Parties like this, for me anyway, are a way for people to recognize how lucky they are and that part of having a certain level of privilege is also having a certain level of responsibility to give back to your community, and these guys [Scheiner and Hargis] have taken that charge and run with it. It’s a high priority for them, in the course of their summer, to make this a successful event so that they can give money to the charities, and also make it a fun party for the people who go and have that enhance their experience of Fire Island.”

Each year, the party draws in a huge crowd. The age range spans generations, with 20-something twinks bumping up against hunky middle-aged professionals. Even Fire Island’s older generation, men in their 70s and 80s, can be found at Reflections on July 4th. Guy Smith will be totally transforming the bay house for this year’s event. “We have lots of effects and lighting planned,” he explains. “I am turning the back deck of Reflections into a full-on openair nightclub, with the most massive sound system on Fire Island, smoke effects, lights that shoot all the way to Sayville, and a sexy gladiator visual show by Robert Montenegro in the big picture window over the entrance to the party. The big reveal is at sunset —you don’t want to miss it. David Wright will be decorating the deck as a Roman ruin by day. Just follow the 20 flapping pennants to the party!” This transformation will help set the night’s fantastical mood. Scheiner explains, “The theme is meant to be played with, both in setting the mood and offering a style for costume should anyone be inclined to dress the theme. This year’s theme is gladiators and letting your fantasy ‘Rome.’ It is stepping up the look from Game of Thrones. That should mean lots of sexy costumes with lots of skin.” Here’s hoping that someone comes dressed as a dragon. A sexy one, of course. —MD

The Fire Island dance party and benefit—the longest running on Fire Island—takes place at the iconic bayside house known as “Reflections.” While some may see it as just another Fourth of July party, IndepenDance is much more than that. “It’s also a tradition that started over 20 years ago, when houses on the island actually had parties and they invited neighbors and friends, and over the course of time we’ve added a charitable benefit to it,” notes Scheiner. This year’s IndepenDance will benefit three different charities—The Pines Care Center, which helps to provide staffing for a first-response medical care system for the denizens of the Fire Island Pines; the Anti-Violence Project (AVP), which brings together members of the LGBTQ and HIV-infected communities and their allies to put a stop to violence in all forms; and the Brent Varner Project, which helps artists without health insurance living with HIV/AIDS to gain access to medical services. There’s sure to be plenty of money raised for these organizations with the lineup that this summer’s IndepenDance has in store. Scheiner explains, “Our DJ is the world-renowned Tracy Young, who has over the last several years become the persona and sound identified with our event. Our lighting is by the equally renowned Guy Smith. The co-promoters are Kent Hargis and myself, and the hosts are the Men of Reflections.” One of these men is Gil Neary, the house’s owner, who looks back fondly on IndepenDance’s long history and enjoys the chance to open up his home.“The house is made for parties. That’s pretty much what it was built for, and it’s had some pretty amazing parties,” he says.
