We also have an outstanding series of educational and professional training programs and exciting special events (read parties!) to keep you busy for 28 straight days. Stories that challenge, inspire, and entertain from around the globe can be found in the dozens of productions, readings, and concerts. I encourage you to take full advantage of what’s on offer and possibly expand your notion of what makes a fine musical.

Helping New York theaters grow ticket sales and donations through better engagement. Learn more at ovationtix.com

Our compact Festival campus occupies two great blocks of West 42nd Street at five first-class venues: The Acorn Theatre at Theatre Row, The Peter Jay Sharp Theater, Playwrights Horizons Rehearsal Studio, the glorious new Green Room 42 @ YOTEL, and the Castillo Theatre. For the optimal NYMF experience, please visit them all, as well as our Ticket Services and Audience Hub at the sensational Treehaus MiMA complex just a block west of Playwrights Horizons. As always, we’re indebted to more than a thousand writers, directors, designers, managers, actors, and crew who create such exciting new musicals each summer; to the NYMF team that makes it possible to present nearly 200 performances in four weeks; and to our steadfast board, sponsors, and donors who provide essential leadership and funding in an increasingly challenging environment for making art. And to our audience – thank you for gathering with us, enjoy the show, and please remember to vote for your favorite! Sincerely,

Dear Friends,

July 10 - August 6, 2017

Welcome to the 2017 New York Musical Festival (NYMF)! The arts and culture are a vital part of what makes New York the greatest city in the world. They draw millions of visitors to our city each year while enticing others to make a home and pursue their creative work here. They also bring enormous value and meaning to our lives and connect us more strongly as a city. That’s why the City Council and I have been such strong supporters of the arts and culture in our city, and why we’re incredibly grateful to have cultural venues like NYMF right here in our city. Before the music begins, I would like to thank everyone at NYMF for the important work that they continue to do year after year to help ensure that New York remains a place where new musical theater works can be enjoyed and experienced by all. Special thanks as well to all of this year’s performers for sharing their incredible talents with us.

2017 NEW YORK MUSICAL FESTIVAL • JULY 10 - AUGUST 6

THE CITY OF NEW YORK MAYOR’S OFFICE OF MEDIA AND ENTERTAINMENT NEW YORK, NY 10019 Dear Friends,

July 10 - August 6, 2017

Welcome to the 2017 New York Musical Festival! Now in its 14th year, the New York Musical Festival (NYMF) offers New Yorkers a unique festival experience celebrating new works in musical theater. Throughout the year, works are selected for development and staged by collaborative creative teams during the Festival run, representing thoughtful and captivating programming that showcases the increasingly diverse world of musical theater and its growing audience. The Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment proudly supports NYMF, and the work of staff members and partners who continually encourage New York City performing artists and musical talent to expand the bounds of musical theater while providing training and job opportunities within the Off- and Off-Off-Broadway communities. Home to innovative storytellers adding new perspectives to the theater landscape, NYMF helps to advance the collective artistic voices within the City through public performance. Our agency recently announced support of the Roundabout Theatre Company’s Theatrical Workforce Development Program. In partnership with IATSE, this three-year initiative to educate and train a new generation of theater professionals for skilled technical positions is the first of its kind. We are excited that TWDP Fellows will participate in hands-on technical production seminars and events, and attend performances during the Festival that are certain to broaden and enhance their leaning experiences. This summer, in addition to supporting NYMF, our agency is proud to present the second year of ‘Broadway in the Boros,’ bringing free Broadway and Off-Broadway performances to City parks and areas throughout the five boroughs where live performances do not regularly take place. We are constantly working to develop additional support for the theater communities at all levels. Last fall, we announced a series of initiatives aimed at addressing the underrepresentation of women in New York’s entertainment industry, which includes a $5 million grant fund to support film and theater projects by, for, and about women. Visit our website (www.nyc.gov/film) and follow us on Twitter (@madeinny) to discover everything New York City has to offer the creative community. ENJOY THE FESTIVAL! Sincerely,

Julie Menin, Commissioner Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment

From West Side Story to Rent, from Annie to If/ Then, from On the Town to Hamilton, one thing is certain: musicals and New York City go hand in hand. Though song and dance have long played an important role in storytelling, it wasn’t until the turn of the 20th century in New York that libretto, music, and lyrics came together for the first time to form what we know today as the “book musical.” It is clear that even the earliest musicals were shaped and nourished by this city, influenced by the rumble of the subway train and the rattle of the taxis. Even when it is not explicitly stated, New York City is a character in so many of the musicals we love, just as musical theater is part of the identity of New York. In 2004, The New York Musical Theatre Festival was launched to provide a platform for artists to continue to mount exciting new works in the heart of New York’s theater district. The name has changed slightly, but the essence remains the same. NYMF combines a grassroots festival model with a technical framework geared specifically to musicals. The Festival provides or subsidizes all the key components needed to realize a show, from theaters and technical equipment to marketing support and industry and audience outreach, giving independent artists and early-career producers resources and opportunities they couldn’t otherwise access or afford. In 2013, NYMF was honored with a Drama Desk Award that recognized a decade of creating and nurturing new musical theater. Since the first Festival, more than 420 shows have been presented, featuring thousands of artists. The musicals and artists introduced at NYMF have gone on to further successes on and OffBroadway, across the country, and around the globe – reaching millions of theatergoers worldwide.

OUR MISSION

The New York Musical Festival nurtures the creation, production, and public presentation of stylistically, thematically, and culturally diverse new musicals to ensure the future vitality of musical theater.

WRITERS LIVE HERE

By making it possible for dozens of writers each year to professionally realize their shows in three dimensions with top-notch actors, directors, and designers, NYMF gives authors the essential chance to hone their craft, their projects, and their professional networks. NYMF provides individualized attention to its many participants, including the Next Link Project teams who receive dramaturgical support, guidance building creative and production teams, industry networking assistance, and financial subsidies to ensure that their Festival debut is as successful as possible.

ARTISTS LIVE HERE

The Festival introduces artists from around the world to New York’s unparalleled artistic community, bringing together newcomers and established players to cultivate the next generation of musicals. By fostering an active, creative community and giving rise to dozens of productions each season, NYMF provides actors, directors, producers, choreographers, and designers at all stages of their careers opportunities to take creative risks and expand their horizons.

DIVERSITY LIVES HERE

NYMF shows range from the serious to the ridiculous, from conventional musical comedies to challenging avant-garde works, and everything in between. As an audience member, you have a unique opportunity to encounter a variety of subject matter, themes, and styles, created by artists from all different walks of life and performed by some of the most exciting musical theater talent today in an intimate, affordable setting.

YOU LIVE HERE

Whether you’re an author, an actor, or an audience member, by taking part in this month-long celebration, you’re helping to continue New York City’s great legacy of musical theater for years to come. We thank you for your continued support of new musicals, and of the New York Musical Festival. Please sit back, relax, and enjoy the show!

2017 NYMF

2017 NYMF ABOUT NYMF HOW THE LIGHT GETS IN: AN EVENING OF NEW AMERICAN MICRO-MUSICAL WORKS The lively tale of a pirate, his pig, and a quest to find the perfect set of clothes.

This year, NYMF began commissioning select musical theater writing teams to develop micro-musicals (30 minutes or less) inspired by, or in response to, the two text prompts below in an effort to, as writer and critic Maria Popova states, “use songwriting itself as a laboratory for democratic discourse.” See page 30 for more details about the concert. Presented with support from The ASCAP Foundation and Jan Brandt

PROMPTS “Hope locates itself in the premises that we don’t know what will happen and that in the spaciousness of uncertainty is room to act.” —Rebecca Solnit, Hope in the Dark

“However arrogant this might sound, I want to suggest that poets, by which I mean all artists, are finally the only people who know the truth about us. Soldiers don’t. Statesmen don’t. Priests don’t. Union leaders don’t. Only poets.” —James Baldwin, The Artist’s Struggle for Integrity

What inspired or moved you about the Rebecca Solnit and James Baldwin prompts? “The fire we blaze in this generation is a sparked light protected by visionary individuals such as James Baldwin and Rebecca Solnit. Through their life’s work we have a road map to liberation. To be able to work on pieces inspired by Baldwin and Solnit’s words is a continuation of their legacy and love for human transformation.” —Jonathan McCrory, Director “What I resonate with in both of these quotes is the power it reveals about the individual artist to go within his or herself and dig up what may at first seem elusive in these times; hope, love, truth, and turn it into something material, real, present, and healing.” —Zhailon Levingston, Co-Curator

“Solnit’s quote inspired us to tell a story that we have always wanted to tell. She’s basically describing faith: the same faith that allows our main character to sacrifice everything to create a better life for her son. In our piece ILATHI, our main character starts from nothing, putting one foot in front of the other, eventually achieving what seemed impossible when she began.” —Lelund Durond Thompson and Jason Michael Webb “We make decisions based on our benefit for the present but we rarely think about the future. With WATER IS LIFE, we want to bring a light and voice to show how our choices can affect future generations to come.” —Ty Defoe and Tidtaya Sinutoke “OTHERBODY was written to address a looming sense of alienation and survival in what increasingly feels like a new nation. Like Solnit says, we don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow or the next day. There’s no way of anticipating who or how or how much our differences will be used against us in a lifetime. OTHERBODY is an attempt to find the same hope that Solnit locates in a spacious uncertainty. The story acknowledges that woods will burn, but together we can grow a new hope from the ash.” —Nessie Nankivell and Ryan Scott Oliver

2017 NYMF ABOUT NYMF THE NEXT LINK PROJECT A flagship of the Festival, NYMF’s Next Link Project is an innovative writers’ service program open to any writer – produced or unproduced, with or without agency representation. The program receives hundreds of submissions from all over the world each fall, and every script and demo recording is reviewed by numerous members of NYMF’s Reading Committee. A double-blind screening process, designed to ensure that the quality of the work and not the name of the author guides our readers, culminates in a select group of finalists being reviewed by a Grand Jury of leading musical theater artists and producers. Finally, up to ten shows are awarded production spots in the Festival. Once selected, the writing teams embark on an intense development process in preparation for their Festival productions with help from NYMF every step of the way. NYMF offers guidance in many forms, including varied seminars – on fundraising, marketing, producing, and more – led by industry professionals, networking events, dramaturgical support, a $5000 production subsidy, casting assistance, and the immense marketing and industry exposure that comes with appearing at NYMF.

2017 NYMF ABOUT NYMF STUDENT LEADERSHIP PROGRAM The NYMF Student Leadership Program (SLP) provides training and mentoring to students interested in careers in musical theater. NYMF accepts applications each spring from both undergraduate and graduate students, ultimately selecting a group of student leaders. They are assigned roles of producer, director, stage manager, casting director, marketing director, or music director – depending on their areas of interest – under the mentorship and supervision of Festival staff. NYMF provides both a production budget and the Festival’s technical resources to underwrite an original concert devised and assembled by the SLP team. In addition to the students serving on the creative team, the concert is entirely written and performed by their fellow students.

NYMF strives to include students from as many schools as possible in the SLP and gives students the chance to forge meaningful relationships with their peers at other institutions. “New musicals are essential to seeing our art form continue to flourish and impact new audiences. It’s important for artists to support these new works by bringing them to life on stage. In my career, some of the most rewarding endeavors have been those explored alongside the composer, playwright, or director. Their ideas are not only artistic, but often have an important message for the audience — one that can have a great effect on our society. The beauty of theater is that people of different races, ages, genders, and orientations gather together to hear a story. I believe that sharing this experience is an amazing way for all of us to find what we have in common rather than how we differ. New ideas and new musicals bring people to the theater. The more people we bring in, the greater our chances are to find common ground.” —Audra McDonald

“It is our privilege to have Audra McDonald, one of the most iconic and celebrated musical theater performers of her generation, join us as Honorary Chair this summer. As an actress and interpreter of new and classic work — both musical and non-musical alike — she exemplifies the innovative, passionate, and collaborative spirit we feel is essential to the ethos of the Festival. We are deeply proud to have her support for the fourteenth annual New York Musical Festival.” —Rachel Sussman, Producing Artistic Director at the New York Musical Festival AUDRA MCDONALD is unparalleled in the breadth and versatility of her artistry as both a singer and an actress. 2017 NYMF ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

2017 NYMF ABOUT NYMF

JENN COLELLA What impact has your participation in new musicals made on your career? Working on new musicals offers me the opportunity to collaborate in the process of shaping each new piece with the creators. Knowing that playwrights and composers trust me with their “babies” is a privilege that I never take for granted.

Any surprising untold stories or favorite memories from your NYMF experiences? My favorite NYMF experience was playing Pippi, the kleptomaniac stripper with a heart of gold, in The Great American Trailer Park Musical in NYMF’s very first season!!

You’ve been a part of productions, readings, concerts, and events at NYMF since its inception in 2004. What keeps you coming back to NYMF? NYMF is THE place where musicals are born!! I keep coming back because the caliber of artistry is top notch and I learn so much about myself and the craft every single time.

JENN COLELLA is a Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Award winner and Tony Award® nominee for her portrayal of Captain Beverley Bass in the hit Broadway musical Come From Away. Jenn’s additional Broadway credits include Urban Cowboy, High Fidelity, and Hedda Hopper in Chaplin (which premiered in NYMF as Behind the Limelight in 2006). Her off-Broadway credits include Closer Than Ever, Lucky Guy, Beebo Brinker Chronicles, and Slut.

Why do you believe artists should get involved with NYMF? Artists should get involved with NYMF because it’s a truly loving, nurturing, collaborative environment in which you and your artistry can soar to new and exciting heights.
