GENERAL DON’T FORGET THE LITTLE GUYS!

LITTER BOX TRAINING Yes, bunnies can be trained to use a litter box. This makes having a house bunny much tidier and they’ll appreciate the chance to keep their living space clean. Choose a pine pellet litter or a recycled newspaper litter as other types are not safe for bunnies. Put the box near their food and water and they’ll get the hang of it soon enough!

BUNNY CARE TIPS

NUTRITION A nice mix of hay, vegetables, pellets, as well as fresh water will make your rabbit healthy and happy. The main part of a bunny’s diet should be fresh timothy, oat, or grass hay – all day, every day. You can supplement this with a small amount of bunny pellets and fresh veggies. Fruit is okay, but only as a special treat.

Most people visit New Westminster’s Animal Shelter looking to adopt a cat or dog. But we also have many wonderful bunnies for adoption. Bunnies can make great pets if you treat them like family and provide them with the proper care. If you are interested in adopting a bunny (or two!), visit the New Westminster Animal Shelter at: www.newwestshelter.petfinder.com.

HOUSING Bunnies can live free-roam in a bunny-proofed room or they can be contained within a puppy pen or a large cage. If a bunny is contained, their space should always be large enough so they can hop around and they should be let out of their pen for at least a few hours every day for exercise. Choose a quiet (but not isolated) area for your bunny. BUNNY-PROOFING YOUR HOME Rabbits need to chew to prevent their teeth from overgrowing. Don’t leave anything you don’t want chewed up within their reach and make sure to cover electrical wires to prevent injuries. ENRICHMENT Just like other pets, bunnies need stuff to do so they don’t get bored or destructive. Provide appropriate chewing toys, cardboard boxes to hide in and chew, and tunnels to run through. 82

Its name changed through the years: the Provincial Lunatic Asylum (1878); the Provincial Hospital for the Insane (1883); Woodlands School (1950) and Woodlands (1974). The original two-storey 28-room asylum opened in 1878, with thirteen people transported from Victoria to be housed in this institution. After three months, the Mainland Guardian’s August 1878 edition described it as a “dungeon”: “windows very high up in the walls and guarded with heavy iron bars - sufficient... to disorder the brains of sane persons.” With the opening of a new wing on the north side in 1884-85, window sills were finally lowered to allow patients to see outside.

In 1895, architect George W. Grant added a three-storey addition to the asylum’s front entrance where the medical superintendent, George Bodington and his family moved in mid-September. They had five bedrooms, a dining room, a drawing room, a bathroom, kitchen and other amenities. In the post-war period, parents of children in Woodlands advocated that their family members would do better in smaller, community-based supported home settings. In 1986, the first buildings began closing; by 1996 all of Woodlands closed. Onni bought the site seven years later, which was rezoned for high-density residential and its name changed to Victoria Hill.

The Centre Block, where George Bodington once lived, was the only part to survive after four fires in 2008. It was demolished on October 18, 2011. In early 2017, a new interpretive garden will be unveiled on the site of the original building, as part of the new multi-family project there. Based on community consultation with former residents, heritage advocates, and current Victoria Hill neighbours, the garden is a contemplative area to learn about this part of New Westminster’s history.
