The federally funded program places people age 55 and older in volunteer jobs at human service agencies. This area program is sponsored by the Community Action Committee of Danbury and receives additional funding from the United Way and the State of Connecticut Department of Social Services, and the Corporation for National and Community Service. This club sponsors dances in the Edmond Town Hall gym at 8 pm on the first and third Fridays of each month (except July and August). Salvation Army, Newtown Service Unit Dick Sturdevant, chairperson; Marie Sturdevant, secretary; and Peg Forbell, treasurer. The local service unit of the Salvation Army meets six times a year in the Social Services office at Town Hall South. The Salvation Army in Newtown provides food and clothing for people, and provides other emergency services when necessary. It operates a community food pantry in the Social Services office at Town Hall South, and provides medical and dental assistance for children and senior citizens. It provides fuel to citizens in need under Operation Fuel. The group’s annual meeting takes place in October. New members always welcome. Sandy Hook Arts Center for Kids Sandy Hook Arts Center for Kids (SHACK), is a nonprofit healing arts center with the mission of providing the community with a safe haven to explore therapeutic and educational classes, sessions and workshops in art, music and theatre.
