Interim Head of School Dear Alumnae, Family, and Friends of Sacred Heart, One of the hallmarks of a Sacred Heart education is its emphasis on cultivating Courage and Confidence in our students. In this edition of Très Bien, we proudly showcase the inspiring stories of three graduates who exemplify this courage. They have fearlessly pursued their dreams, harnessed their talents, and dedicated themselves to making meaningful contributions to their communities.

The Sacred Heart brand of Courage and Confidence is nurtured through an approach to education that focuses on the development of the whole person. Students are exposed to innovative classroom programs that inspire critical thinking and creativity. They are encouraged to confront the world’s challenges, gaining a firsthand understanding of global issues. Our students interpret and communicate their perspectives through various forms of artistic expression such as the written word, performance, and dance.

A Sacred Heart education is not just about academic, athletic, and artistic growth. It is also a spiritual journey. Our students deepen their relationship with God through prayer, liturgy, and the experience of God’s love within their community. Courage and Confidence abound when students understand how deeply they are loved.

None of this transformative work would be possible without the incredible generosity of our benefactors. Jessica Hooper THE NEW HEAD OF SCHOOL AT NEWTON COUNTRY DAY SCHOOL OF THE SACRED HEART Jessica Hooper is a proven Catholic educator and leader who builds community by making meaningful connections.

A University of San Diego alumna, she initially started her journey as a middle school teacher and expanded her skill set through a Master’s in Educational Administration. Over the years, she has held a multitude of roles within schools, from teaching in the classroom to program development, enrollment management, and advancement. For almost a decade, Jessica served as the Assistant Head of School at the Academy of Our Lady of Peace, a Catholic, all-girls high school sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. Most recently, she has served as President of Nativity Prep in San Diego — an independent, all-scholarship Catholic middle school.

Jessica is a devoted advocate for all-girls education, a committed believer in the transformative power of integrating faith into the academic landscape, and an unyielding optimist in the boundless potential of each individual. The example of Christ’s love, as understood through her Catholic faith, is the foundation of her leadership. Jessica works diligently to foster school cultures that promote and support all students.

Beyond her professional endeavors, Jessica enjoys playing tennis, reading, traveling, and exploring the great outdoors with her family. Alongside her husband, James, she is the proud mother to Clare (age 13, 8th grade), Jack (age 12, 7th grade), and a lively toddler, Charlie (age 4, Pre–K).

Campus Highlights Grade 5 Voyagers Program This fall, Newton Country Day launched the Voyagers Program, which takes Grade 5 students on approximately 15 academic interdisciplinary excursions throughout the school year. Each of the cross-curricular excursions is collaboratively planned by teachers of at least two different academic subjects.

The Voyagers Program is coordinated by the Experiential Education subcommittee of the Future of Learning Group at NCDS, which is headed by Upper School history teacher David Byron. “The Voyagers Program extends students’ learning outside of the classroom by leveraging the tremendous resources of the greater Boston area,” said Byron. “In this first year of the program, we are incredibly excited to work with teachers to plan trips that combine multiple courses into these offcampus excursions.”

The other two members of the Experiential Education subcommittee are Middle School English teacher Emily Horwitz and Catherine Barber, Assistant Head of the Middle School. “The 5th grade is the perfect group to pilot this program, as so many cross-curricular experiences were already built into their coursework,” Barber added. “The Voyagers Program further develops those cross-curricular plans to bring classroom lessons to life.”

Students observed the geometric properties of sculptures and experimented with spatial designs in dance composition at deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum.

Grade 8 Capstone Project

The inaugural excursion combined English and history at the Jackson Homestead and Museum in Newton. “At the Jackson Homestead, we got to actually practice archaeology and dig up the artifacts,” reported Marian Emans ’31. “We found a deer antler that had been used as an awl!”

The second excursion of the school year brought students to the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum in Lincoln to explore Dance and Math. “It was fun to be able to actually see the things we’ve been talking about in class and to interact with the sculptures at the park,” said Kathleen Cullen ’31. “We get to actually experience the real thing instead of just looking at pictures.”

Future excursions include the Boston Symphony Orchestra (Instrumental Music and Religious Studies), the Harvard Natural History Museum (Science and Roots of Language), and Boston’s Freedom Trail (History and Math). Grade 5 students are looking forward to more trips: Coco Baugh ’31 spoke for her class in saying, “We think it’s a fun way to learn new things and review what we learn in class. The world is our classroom!”

Another new program in the Middle School this year is a Capstone Project for Grade 8, an independent study project undertaken solely by each student with mentorship from a faculty member.

Students must propose, plan, and execute a personal project that displays their personal interest in a topic, a mastery of middle school curriculum, and an understanding of the Goals of Sacred Heart schools. The Capstone Project could be a product, a piece of art, a podcast, or a novella, among others. The possibilities are driven by the student’s personal interests. A small sample of the projects in the works right now: Lillie Sitt ’28 is turning her poetry into six songs; Jordan Rich ’28 is producing a Middle School newspaper; Eila Murray ’28 is writing a 30page short story that will be published on Kindle; Noelle Trull ’28 is training her dog Ollie to become a therapy dog; Casandra Ortiz Gonzalez ’28 is making a coloring book to promote mental health wellness; and Emily Schumacher ’28 is creating a video series of strength and flexibility exercises based on her dance background.

In discussing the beginning stages of the Capstone Project, Jordan Rich ’28 shared: “I think the coolest part is that there’s so much brainstorming. You have so many ideas, and there’s just that lightbulb moment of ‘that’s what I want to do.’”

“Something I love about these is that they all have a service component,” said Emily Horwitz, English teacher and Director of the Grade 8 Capstone Project. “It is such a public service to put out art, information, and knowledge into the world. All of these projects are deeply rooted in each individual’s interests and strengths, but are all so generous to the community, and that’s what gives me goosebumps.”

Ignatian Teach-In 2022: Rooted and Renewing In October 2022, six students and two faculty members attended the Ignatian Teach-In in Washington, D.C. Led by the Ignatian Solidarity Network, the annual event is a gathering of students from Catholic high schools and colleges with keynote speakers and breakout sessions intended to inspire young people to explore how to live out their faith in a world marked by injustice. The 2022 event’s theme was Rooted and Renewing and included advocacy topics of climate change and immigration reform.

Religious Studies department chair Mark Potter shared: “It’s completely alive.

NCDS is a beautiful bubble, but we’re part of a larger Church that engages with difficult parts of our world. The event inspires a feeling that we are part of something much bigger, that we can

be part of critical solutions.” Potter noted that for many, the Teach-In is their favorite way to practice their faith. The gathering forges peer-to-peer connections rooted in a shared responsibility to help the disenfranchised.

NCDS students remarked that the most memorable aspect of the TeachIn was bonding with other Sacred Heart students. Nora Donovan ’24 shared: “Two [students I met] were from Convent of the Sacred Heart in New York and Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart in Maryland. It was so great to meet others with shared traditions and experiences.” In years past, NCDS students have met their Sacred Heart “sisters” from Atherton, Miami, New Orleans, New York, and Bethesda.

Farrah Coleman ’24 Awarded the Cindy Lombardo Volunteer Award Every year, the families of Family Promise Metrowest (FPM), a homeless shelter in Natick, award the Cindy Lombardo Volunteer Award to a volunteer who lives out the legacy of Cindy Lombardo and shows commitment to the organization’s mission: to transform the lives of families with children who are homeless by providing shelter, education, and comprehensive support. NCDS student Farrah Coleman ’24 was presented with the 2023 award following her volunteer work as part of her Hesed service project.

FPM families nominated Farrah because she followed the model of warmth and compassion set by Cindy Lombardo, the former lead coordinator of Temple Shir Tikva. Farrah played an integral role in

the organization’s mission during the relaunch of the shelter program, forging deep connections with families over meals and bonding with children through various activities. In an interview with the organization, she described her experience as “creating a second family. Everyone was very warm with each other and there was such a strong community… Volunteering is one of the best experiences I’ve had.”

The FPM staff wrote: “[Farrah was] eager to engage with the people we serve… She left a lasting impression on all those she worked with.”

Honors Global Studies: History and English in Conversation The Honors Global Studies program, now in its fourth year, continues to be a champion of home-grown advanced independent curriculum for the Upper School. The program was co-designed

by Upper School history teacher David Byron and Upper School English teacher Andrew Szilvasy, who noticed in the past that students frequently remarked that history and English classes operated in tandem. This tenth grade program is an interdisciplinary approach to the humanities, enriching students’ understanding of global cultures by combining surveys of modern history and global literature from the French Revolution to the present. Students study major topics in world history, including revolutions on both sides of the Atlantic; imperialism and resistance in Africa, Asia, China, and Japan; World Wars I and II; post-colonialism and the Cold War; and the contemporary world. Simultaneously, the course exposes students to the scope of literary development with a particular emphasis

on non-European voices through a variety of genres: short novels, poems, short stories, plays, and nonfiction pieces, along with supplemental sources in art, music, and material culture.

Every two weeks, the history and English classes combine. Three of these combined class days feature a field trip: one to the Museum of Fine Arts, another to the Peabody-Essex Museum, and the third to the Harvard Art Museums in the spring, furthering the school-wide effort to promote experiential and place-based learning.

“We noticed that the students were talking about the same topics in English and history class,” said Byron, “but they weren’t in conversation with one another. We wanted to make the English curriculum more global while exploring history through a literary lens.” This diversification of the curriculum worked hand-in-hand with a broader effort of the English department. Head of the Upper School Melissa Bleakney-Dalton noted the immense impact of the program,

sharing, “The students realize and feel the deeper engagement and intellectual challenge, and they develop a great deal of self-efficacy. There is great merit in cross-curricular instruction, particularly for girls,” she explained, “and by viewing the content through a lens that’s broader than just one academic discipline, they develop skills that they can apply outside of the classroom.”

Student reception of the program has been positive, as well. Carys Anderson ’24, who participated in the program as a tenth grader, said, “We understood the texts in English class better because we had the context of what was going on at that point in history. For example, we learned about the Enlightenment in history and then learned about Frankenstein in English and how they were related. It was also fun to go on field trips and bond with classmates for half the day. We got close with our peers that way.”

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Justice, and Belonging at Newton Country Day Much, if not all, of the observances and celebrations of cultural heritage that happen throughout the school year are produced and driven by our student-led Affinity Groups. Whether it’s a live presentation at announcements, a visual display in the library or on hallway walls, or a vibrant all-school celebration, students proudly share their cultural traditions with their school community and why these traditions are so important to them.

For Black History Month, award-winning photographer Arielle Gray spoke on a panel for the Upper School with the leaders of Black Student Union, Alexia Ransome ’23, Dezire Ambroise ’24, and Kaelea Severino ’24, presenting her work, which focuses on matrilineal history, storytelling, and the Black experience. Ms. Gray also sat down with Middle School student photography enthusiasts in the library for a vibrant discussion about telling stories through photography. (continued)

In celebration of Women’s History Month, the Upper School met Emme Handy, Senior Advisor to the COO at the Broad Institute and former Chief of Administration and Finance, Chief Financial Officer, and Collector-Treasurer for the City of Boston. In conversation with Student Heads of School, Sophia He ’23 and Isabel Leong ’23, Ms. Handy shared about her path to Courage and Confidence that included awkward teenage phases, college decisions, and dedicating one’s life to the things that matter to you most.

An annual spring event to celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month was presented by two Affinity Groups: Asian Students in America (ASIA) and the Multi-Racial Coalition (MRC). Students enjoyed learning origami and calligraphy, tasting homemade Taiwanese green tea and iced Chai, and writing haikus. The MRC presented their year-long heritage projects: personal photography collages focusing on family and self expression, conveying pride in their multiracial backgrounds.

Other recognitions of cultural holidays during the school year included Indigenous Peoples’ Day, Diwali, International Day of Disabled Persons, International Human Rights Day, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Poverty in America Month, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Lunar New Year, Holocaust Remembrance Day, and Passover.

Faculty Profile: Father Terry Devino A Reflection of Joy FOR CHAPLAIN FR. TERRY DEVINO S.J., SPIRITUAL NOURISHMENT IS BOTH VOCATION AND REWARD

by Laura Kelly The faculty and staff of Newton Country Day are known for being dedicated and supportive, but one individual stands out as the embodiment of welcoming, understanding, and spiritual guidance, regardless of faith or creed: Father Terry Devino S.J., the school’s beloved chaplain. He was initially brought to campus for occasional liturgies and was soon invited to come to campus whenever he could, to be present in the halls and classes and to celebrate the Sacraments. This opportunity was a privilege, he shared, and continues to be to this day. For the community at Newton Country Day, he is a source of hope for those who are struggling, a resource for faith development, and, most importantly, a friend to all.

Father Devino’s vocation was revealed to him in 1987 during a visit to Eastern Point Retreat House, where the spirit of God led him to become a Jesuit. “Vocation,” he shared, “is a lingering sense of something that stretches the heart to the more… it’s about going where you feel drawn, and I was drawn to God.” Since this transformative experience, Father Devino has served as a parish priest, campus minister, hospital chaplain, retreat director, and administrator and Vice President at three different colleges. “Not my doing — but God’s,” he explained.

In 2011, God’s doing led Father Devino to NCDS, where he helps to normalize a spiritual practice for the students. He understands that developing a relationship with a God that can be difficult to understand is often daunting, especially during the formative years of grades 5–12. “It is important for our girls to have a sense of the spirit of God and to understand that they have access to that spiritual place in their lives,” he said. “I help them to access this place within themselves. It doesn’t matter what their religious background is. I never ask.” He recounted when a student attended

Confession and shared that she was not Catholic. He simply smiled and said, “Welcome.”

When encountering Father Devino, it’s clear that you are always bearing witness to his most honest self. His relentless joy is not a facade, but an authentic reflection of the joy he feels within the NCDS community, which he finds distinctly special; it anchors him. “My faith, yes, is an anchor,” he explained, “but faith is only an anchor when it is nourished, so nourishment comes first. And I am nourished by companions.” For him, being a part of the staff at NCDS provides easy nourishment.

“Every day, I see God in every single person I meet. God is everywhere. And when I, at day’s end, fall to my knees to thank God for allowing me to show up and notice, it is then that my faith is formed and nourished.”

Inspiration comes easily serving alongside faculty and staff who are deeply involved in the religious culture of the School. They often share deeply personal reflections at chapel and provide diverse perspectives on how to live a life of faith. “Spiritual guidance is all around us. The girls see and feel it across the board here. So do I. It’s like Saint Madeleine Sophie is in the other room, and the girls talk to her. It’s profound.”

Father Devino prides himself on being “the best salesperson” for NCDS; ask anyone in the community, and they will agree.

“I encounter the Spirit, the Gift, the Grace of NCDS each time I am here, in the ordinary stuff of living, joy, heartache, struggle, reconciliation, and above all, in the companionship of one another in the journey we call life!” he continued, with his signature unwavering joy. “If you really keep your hand to the wall here, you will feel the heartbeat of God.” Très Bien Magazine 9

For the first time in Newton Country Day history, two students were named National Honorable Mentions. Emma Nero ’23 and Delaney Woolbert ’23 are two of only 360 high school students earning this award, selected from more than 3,400 amazing, talented young applicants.

In addition to the student awards, Computer Science teacher Cynthia Erickson received a Massachusetts Affiliate Educator Honorable Mention for playing a pivotal role in encouraging 9th–12th grade students to explore their interest in computing and technology.

COLLEGE BOARD AP® COMPUTER SCIENCE FEMALE DIVERSITY AWARD Newton Country Day earned the College Board AP® Computer

Science Female Diversity Award for achieving high female representation in AP Computer Science A. With the implementation of the Computer Science curriculum, 25% of the Class of 2023 took AP Computer Science A while at NCDS. In the graduating Classes of 2021 and 2022, 12 students took AP Computer Science A. Eleven of those 12 are currently majoring in computer science or in engineering with a strong computer science component.

“Our students quickly realize how computer science is incorporated into any field or interest,” explained Martha Haddad P ʼ22, Chair of the Computer Science department. “For example, if you are a dancer and your costume involves something that lights up, someone has to code that. They see immediate real-life applications. Even taking one course in computer science gives them a better understanding of the opportunities and limitations technology provides.”

Art and Writing SCHOLASTIC ART & WRITING AWARDS It was another impressive year for Newton Country Day in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, earning the fourth highest total number of writing awards in Massachusetts with 48 given to 37 different students, marking the second-most writing awards NCDS has received in a single year.

National Merit Scholarship Program Charlotte Bizup ’23, Jaime Chow ’23, Emma Nero ’23, and Delaney Woolbert ’23 were named Commended Students in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation, which conducts the program, was presented to the students at Upper School assembly. Commended Students

placed among the top 50,000 students who entered the 2023 competition by taking the 2021 PSAT. In addition, Sophia He ’23 was one of 16,000 semifinalists for the National Merit Scholars Program for her outstanding performance.

NCDS Poetry State Silver Key Winner Contest Winner ROOTED A GAZE AT THE SAKURA

My gaze drifts seamlessly towards the glass, Dividing the stoic from my startled state.

I long for shards to break free from the dusty partition, And drown out the exhales of perturbed peers.

Coarse, brittle, sediment filters through Ivy’s hands. The soil, barren of hydration, ridden with fallen petals, is cold to the touch. Ivy rises from her perch among the vegetation, looking over her meek but charming garden. While her independence is a quality she prides herself upon, a ten year old can only do so much on her own. She has been especially innovative this season, her mother shipped off her gardening supplies a few months ago. Sometimes sold, other times stored away, losing such possessions are not a rare occurrence. As expected, no one had thought to tell her, never mind ask her.

I long to fall, like the blossoms from the tree In a lethargic drift from its celestial stem.

How I could doze in the grass, coated with the dew fall, Escape the screeching of a frustrated fossil.

“It’s only early September,” Ivy mumbles, attempting to swallow her concern as it arises in her chest, brewing as a cluster of clouds would before an impending storm. Shifting to inspect her rose bush, Ivy furrows her brows as her eyes trail the discoloration sprouting at the tips of the leaves, corrupting the stem, the stalks, and at last, the rose buds. Its vibrant, rich pigmentation has been drained from its outstretched arms, soaking into the earth below, dissolving down into the world beneath it.

The sakura poses for human consumption, Longing for a gaze as envious as mine To validate its silent toil.

The tree longs for involvement In the tasks fulfilled with sighs.

A glade of trees surrounds the back three sides of the garden. Ivy’s favorite, the magnolia tree, radiates a soft glow. The branches’ earthly scent preserve her memories of a spring breeze, the crisp dew of an April rainfall, the intoxicating scent of a honeybee’s trail of nectar, flowers’ sweet aromas. Only, the tree’s flowers left Ivy in early July, and to her sorrow, the leaves are soon to as well. The roses are not alone in frost’s contamination.

The blossoms long for rest in its branches, A recluse haunted with the perpetual fear, Of enduring the inevitable descent Into the sweaty And cramped Lawn of its people.

Casting a shadow down upon those rooted within, birds soar southward with outstretched feathers, evading winter’s bitter virus. Ivy cranes her head to watch the birds, the distance between them so great Ivy feels as if the ground is slowly absorbing her, pulling her under to dwell with the fallen roses.

Ivy sighs. Behind her, before the entrance to the garden, loom charcoal shutters, wood panels weathered by rain and storm with paint peeling along the perimeter, and a battered screen door, its splinters grasping onto rusted hinges. When she returns inside, her mother waiting at the door will scold her for her foolishness, for the time she wasted playing in the dirt, fixated on trivial matters.

The previous homeowners had left behind the garden. When Ivy first encountered it, her newfound fascination coiled around her heart as a vine winds around the downspout of a house, its leaves gripping to the aluminum surface.

Despite all of her efforts to help the garden brace the freezing wrath of the changing seasons, to shield it from the passage of time, Ivy knows she has failed yet again.

Each year, winter’s ravaging chariot sweeps her back into her home and away from the garden, imprisoning her.

Ivy’s feet drag in the gravel as she approaches the door, lifting her eyes begrudgingly to meet her mother’s glare. Yet all she sees are the dim, flickering lights of the kitchen.

There is no figure waiting to lecture her, to tell her to scrape the mud off of her shoes.

She pushes her way through the threshold, metal screeching as she shoves her shoulder into the screen. Running up the empty stairwell, the shadowed hallways, Ivy firmly closes the door to her room. She will return when warm sunlight floods through her curtains, when the birds chirp so loudly even her mother pays them notice. Until then, she will stay sealed away, awaiting Demeter’s arrival.

Athletics Fall 2022 Season Highlights Varsity Volleyball placed first in the EIL and won the EIL tournament for the second consecutive year. The team earned the #4 seed in the NEPSAC Class B Tournament, where they faced and defeated Middlesex School. Varsity Head Coach Preston Yong was named EIL Coach of the Year, and the team was also honored with the NEPSAC Sportsmanship Award. Emilia Powderly ’25 was named EIL Player of the Year.

Varsity Field Hockey placed second in the EIL and earned the #2 seed in the NEPSAC Class C Tournament, where they defeated league rival Winsor School.

Scoring 63 goals while only giving up 9 goals the entire season, the team gave up the fewest goals in all of New England. Varsity Head Coach and Athletic Director Kimberly Southall was named EIL Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year, and Captain Jane Bresnahan ’23 was named EIL Player of the Year, also for the second year in a row.

As a team, Varsity Soccer scored 46 goals, the fourth most goals scored in 20 years, and allowed only 23 goals, the fourth fewest in 20 years. All 20 players registered either a goal or an assist over the course of the season, and the team earned a spot in the EIL tournament and a bid for the NEPSAC Tournament.

Despite having some runners sidelined, the Varsity Cross Country team placed an impressive third at the EIL Championship meet, defeating seven other schools.

Varsity Crew rowed in the CRI Fall Classic and the Textile River Regatta, and the top experienced athletes raced the Women’s Junior 8+ event at the Head of the Charles.

Winter 2022–23 Season Highlights Varsity Basketball had its third consecutive winning season and placed fourth in the EIL, qualifying for the EIL Tournament for the second year in a row. This marks the second school appearance in the last 10 years.

The Varsity Dance team placed first at the Believe Competition with their contemporary dance and was invited to compete at the national competition. Their jazz dance placed second and received an award for being one of the most entertaining dances. At the Spirit of Dance Awards Competition, their jazz dance placed first, their contemporary dance placed second, and their small group dance placed first in their category.

Varsity Ice Hockey had their first winning season in 12 years and placed third in the EIL. Varsity Squash had a great performance at the NEPSAC Tournament, finishing fourth in Class E.

Spring 2023 Season Highlights Varsity Softball finished 7–5 overall, losing to only 2 EIL teams and coming in at third place in the league.

All four Varsity Crew boats qualified to progress to the New England Interscholastic Rowing Association Championship Regatta (NEIRA).

Varsity Lacrosse finished the regular season seeded third and then beat Winsor 9–8 to place second in the EIL tournament. Alison Vander Vort was named an EIL Co-Coach of the Year.

Varsity Sailing joined Beaver Country Day this year in a cooperative team. The team placed second in the overall Mass Bay League C division. Kaileigh Ferrero ’26 competed in both team regattas and won the Division A at the Donald Greene Regatta in a fleet of 24 boats, aand earned the Most Valuable Athlete award as a skipper.

Middle School Softball celebrated an undefeated season for the fourth season in a row.

Crew Alumnae Dominate on National and International Stages

by Laura Kelly During her sophomore year at NCDS, Megan Lee ’19 decided to leave her ten-year swimming career for rowing.

While on the NCDS team, she was selected to the 2018 CanAmMex Regatta in Mexico City and was recruited for the Duke University crew team. Following graduation, she

represented the United States at the World Rowing Junior Championships in Tokyo as a member of the US Junior National Team in 2019. Megan won the pair at the 2022 US Rowing Under 23 National Team Trials and finished eighth in the pair at the 2022 World Rowing Under 23 Championships.

This summer, she stroked the US women’s eight to gold in an open-water victory at the 2023 World Rowing Under 23 Championships.

Daisy Mazzio-Manson ’16 started to row at age 15 at NCDS. She was recruited by Yale University for her undergraduate career and went on to row at the University of Texas at Austin for her graduate years. Daisy had her first National Team appearance as a member of the 2019 U23 National Team, finishing third in the eight at the 2019 World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Sarasota, Florida.

This September, she competed in the women’s eight at worlds in Belgrade, Serbia, winning silver. By placing in the top five, the boat class qualifies for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

Congé Congé started off with a chorus of jubilant, screaming seniors running through the halls, announcing the annual holiday from classes. Isabel Leong ’23 In Middle School, I loved my mailbox. Whenever a piece of paper or a Hershey’s kiss landed in my mailbox, my mind lit up, and I felt so special. So when a small slip of paper poked out of my mailbox one day in 7th grade, I was giddy. In middle school fashion, the black-and-white image on the paper was blurry and pixelated. On the printout were the words, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.” I thought: “What am I going to do with this?” I took the piece of paper home and left it on a bookshelf next to my desk. I did not give it much thought, but I could not bring myself to throw it away.

Reading this Beatitude for the first time and for a while after, I focused on the word “satisfied.” Satisfied, yes. That is how I want to feel. For many years, if you asked what would bring me a deep sense of satisfaction, I would say good grades, leadership opportunities, and doing well in sports. Yes, those things are important and they HAVE brought me joy and satisfaction.

However, at night after packing my notebooks in my bag or typing the last words of my essay, my eyes would always drift to this small piece of paper on my desk, and I would wonder if this Beatitude was calling me to something deeper.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.

The nine Beatitudes speak to us in different ways and in different volumes. They point us towards a different, more countercultural way of living in the world. The Beatitudes are a compass, from Jesus that shine a light on what God values. The Beatitudes invite us to work for peace, understand the reality of suffering, show mercy, and embody humility. What I was taught to want, the status quo, and my value system is sometimes at odds with the Beatitudes.I have come to realize that to hunger and thirst for righteousness often means being dissatisfied with the world as it is. It is to yearn for what is right, instead of what is easy. This Beatitude calls me to lift up those around me, especially those on the margins, and to dilute my selfish needs in spite of our culture that tells us to do more and want more. This Beatitude calls us to serve the people we love, to create communities where all are welcome, and to work for social justice.

I have come to learn that it is Jesus’ definition of satisfaction, and not the world’s definition, that leads to deeper freedom and growth.

Last year, I applied to be a host of one of my favorite podcasts, Dear Asian Girl. This opportunity pushed me out of my comfort zone, taught me the joy of encounter, and brought me closer to my heart. Dear Asian Girl is a podcast that highlights the personal stories of Asian women from all walks of life and focuses on uplifting and highlighting Asian girls everywhere. I have had the privilege of interviewing authors, professors, and content creators with the mission to amplify the visibility of Asian voices and share personal stories. When listeners started reaching out to me it became clear that I was no longer speaking into the void, but people actually were listening and enjoying what we had to say. Listeners mentioned the relatability of the podcast and gratitude of having a space to be seen and heard. What was once a fun project turned into a meaningful passion. A passion to have honest conversations and to highlight Asian joy and creativity to Asian youth. Dear Asian Girl has given me a group of friends who share similar goals and beliefs, people who hunger and thirst to use their skills and

talents to educate and celebrate others. This experience brought me closer to the invitation that Jesus extended to me on that small slip of paper in 7th grade. Dear Asian Girl showed me how deeply satisfying it is to work on something greater than myself. This fourth Beatitude is not only telling us to go out and bring justice to the world, but also to live with passion and purpose. It helps me to turn my gaze from my own accomplishments and towards the common good, which has brought me closer to God and reshaped my understanding of what true satisfaction is.

For a long time I thought that being called by God looked like a grand angel appearing in front of me or hearing God’s booming voice from a cloud, sending me a formula to be the most righteous, perfect person. I realize now that those fourteen words in my mailbox were a call and they will continue to be a call that centers my life.

The Beatitudes are not a step-by-step wikiHow and there is no one formula that lays out all of the answers, which for me, can be really frustrating. However, the Beatitudes give us something better: they invite us to explore the deepest desires of our hearts, and in doing so, find God. As a senior and soon to be alumna, the deepest desires of my heart are bound to change and evolve, but the blurry and pixelated paper from my mailbox will stay with me, reminding me to hunger, thirst, and work for a world that reflects God’s will, more than my own.

The Class of 2023 Graduates

Newton Country Day’s 143rd Graduation Ceremony was held in the Sunken Garden on Thursday, June 8. A week of gloomy skies cleared for the day as the families of the 52 graduates of the Class of 2023 gathered to celebrate the spirit and accomplishments of the senior class.

After the procession into the tent, Headmistress Sister Barbara Rogers welcomed everyone before introducing Class President Elizabeth McDougall ’23. After McDougall gave the Invocation, Alice Husson Prize recipient Lia Cressotti ’23 took the stage to thank the faculty and staff.

“On behalf of my class, who I know share my sentiment, I would like to thank the teachers and faculty of NCDS for making these strange four years one for the history books,” said Cressotti.

“Mainly, we are thankful that they have impressed on us the importance of taking initiative. The initiative to do our best to succeed. The initiative to speak up for ourselves when we struggle. And, most importantly, the initiative to learn for the sake of learning.”

Graduation speaker Dr. Helen Boucher P ’17 ’22, Dean of Tufts University School of Medicine and Chief Academic Officer of Tufts Medicine, then addressed the crowd, delivering the Graduation Address.

After reflecting on her own connection to the Sacred Heart Network of Schools as a graduate of Sacred Heart Greenwich, as a former teacher at Duchesne Academy in Houston, and as a past parent at NCDS, Dr. Boucher shared some advice with the Class of 2023.

“Keep an open mind,” she said. “You may know what you want to do with your life, and that is wonderful. That said, you are starting on a new journey today — commencement means “the beginning” — you will encounter new people, places, and things that will change your perspective and your life. So be open to saying yes to that class, that team, that activity, or that person who does not look or speak like you. I promise you that you will be amazed at what you find.”

After the conferring of the diplomas, the Mary Quinlan Salutatory Address was delivered by Sophia He ’23.

“I applaud us for the chances that we found, risks that we took, and lessons that we learned, through which we have discovered a better version of ourselves we once deemed impossible,” said He. “It is exactly because of these uncomfortable moments that today’s celebration is so joyful, and it is the strength of character in response that makes the Class of 2023 so successful.”

Following the distribution of prizes, Delaney Woolbert ’23 delivered the

Janet Erskine Stuart Valedictory Address.

Woolbert spoke of the camaraderie of the Class of 2023 while looking to the future.

“Maybe it’s a good thing to not have the future figured out,” said Woolbert. “What I do know is that to whom much is given, much is expected. These next years are an exciting time for us to share the values NCDS has instilled in us and the gifts we have acquired during our time here with a new group of people. We are all stewards of the talents God has given us, and we are called to use these gifts to serve and love one another.

“But at the end of the day, all we can do is our best, and if something turns out in a way we wouldn’t have planned, it will just make for an even better story to share come reunion time.”

After the Sacred Heart Awards were distributed, Chair of the Board of Trustees Maura T. Murphy ’99 delivered the closing prayer. Families then joined their graduates for photos and celebration as they were welcomed into our alumnae community.

Barbara Rogers RSCJ We have been blessed beyond measure to have Sister Barbara Rogers lead our school for the past 34 years. Before her transition to Head Emerita following the 2022–23 school year, Sister Rogers was the last remaining Religious Head of School among the 25 schools in the Sacred Heart Network throughout the United States and Canada. We thank Sister Rogers for her steadfast guidance, love, and faith.

Rockette Science KELTY OBER ’15 DIDN’T SACRIFICE HER ACADEMIC PURSUITS TO CHASE HER DREAMS ALL THE WAY TO RADIO CITY

by Elizabeth Gallagher ’99 Returning to the Newton Country Day School campus in May 2023 was a “surreal and beautiful” experience for Kelty Ober ’15, who taught a dance master class to NCDS dance students as part of her visit. “When I was a student, we had a teeny ballet studio, which was great, but what the girls have now with the Movement Studio in the Wellness Center is truly incredible.”

Melissa Davenport, Chair of the Arts Department and Ober’s former advisor, adds; “Dance is infused into the culture of our school as a language to express oneself, whether it be in a production, during Mass, or at an event such as Congè or Blue Silver Induction. These shared experiences allow each of our students to bond and grow into women of courage and confidence. The dance faculty are so proud of Kelty, and having her come and teach our students was such a special experience for us all.

The stage Ober dances on now is at Radio City Music Hall. For six weeks a year, Ober dances the 90-year-old nostalgia-provoking, celebratory Christmas Spectacular as a Radio City Rockette. Radio City Music Hall was a goal Ober set for herself in NCDS’ 7th grade, and she credits her six years at the school for helping her hone the tools she needed to achieve this goal at a young age.

Achieving balance while also orienting around a specific goal may sound like mutually exclusive pursuits, but Ober’s path proves just the opposite. “I loved that dance could be a big part of my life at NCDS, but that I could deeply engage in other activities, as well.” This included a passion for science, which was something that Ober fully embraced while at NCDS. “I took every science class I could possibly take. I doubled up in my junior and senior years, taking four challenging courses in that discipline in two very busy years.”

This rock-solid foundation in the sciences proved to be foundational for Ober’s college experience. At Marymount Manhattan College on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, Ober majored in Dance with a concentration on Body, Science, and Motion. “I chose Marymount Manhattan because it is one of the top colleges for dance, but I also knew how important it was going to be to diversify my studies.” In addition to her major and concentration, Ober committed to triple minors in Biology, Chemistry, and Neuroscience.

After college graduation, Ober kicked her training and auditioning up into high gear — pun intended. “Rockettes are one of the only dance companies that perform precision dance so there aren’t many studios that teach it and precision dance classes have been hard to find.” Ober scoured the city and honed in on dancer Traci Reszetylo’s Exactitude program, a precision dance training company. What she found with this group was much more than just training. “From NCDS, I learned the importance of community, particularly of a community of goal-oriented, compassionate women. It was so important for me to find a community like that in 44 Fall/Winter 2023

Kelty Ober ’15 returned to campus last spring to teach a dance master class to Middle School students.

New York, and with Exactitude, that is what I have,” said Ober, who now teaches and trains at the studio during the off-season.

In April of 2022, Ober auditioned for the Rockettes. 750 dancers showed up for 84 spots. Ober made the first cut, when the large group was culled to 40.

From there, she was offered a spot in the Rockette’s Conservatory Program, a brand-new endeavor which invites promising dancers to train with the Rockette team for one very intense week. This residential program is fully immersive and, in many cases, leads to rookie spots in the Rockettes for its enrolled dancers.

Several weeks later, Ober’s phone rang.

It was the Rockettes, offering her the job she had worked toward for years. “After so much preparation, work, and waiting, to finally get that call about a goal I had centered for so many years… the feeling was indescribable.” Adds Davenport, “Kelty is a shining example of how a Sacred Heart education gives you the foundation to achieve your dreams.”

From Team Blue to Blueland ENERGETIC AMBITION LEADS NATALIE HENDERSON ’14 TO THE SUSTAINABILITY START-UP

by Elizabeth Gallagher ’99 Natalie Henderson ’14 bores easily. Thankfully, this boredom is coupled with limitless, mission-based ambition. Since 2019, Henderson has applied this formidable combination of attributes to Blueland Inc., an eco-friendly everyday essentials brand that was first in its industry to create and launch dry-formulated cleaning products.

Henderson was one of a core team of six when Blueland launched. It now has more than 40 employees with Henderson as the CEO’s Chief of Staff. “The mission-driven center of Blueland is central to why I continued to do this work for 4 years,” said Henderson. That, and the fact that there quite literally is never a dull moment with a fast-paced start-up. “I love working, and I love being in a job where things are never finished. I also need a greater purpose and to feel connected to what I do,” she added.

Finding that connection, however, took Henderson from coast to coast. “After college, I had no idea what I wanted to do,” reflected Henderson, who graduated from Harvard University, having focused on government and African American studies. “I knew I was generally interested in equity, but not really sure what equity work looked like,” she explained.

Henderson did know that she wanted a change of scenery, so she packed up and moved to Seattle, landing a job as a recruiting coordinator focusing on DEI for a healthcare start-up.

“That big move was helpful, as I realized fairly quickly that I did not enjoy either Seattle or recruiting,” said Henderson with a laugh. “But it’s helpful to cross things off the list — it’s all part of the process.” After a year in Seattle, Henderson moved back to the East Coast. Eager to find a fast-paced job to satiate her work ethic and keep boredom at bay, Henderson focused on the start-up industry. “I applied for marketing jobs at nearly every start-up in Manhattan,” said Henderson. “I knew that if I went to a start-up, I’d get more exposure to all different areas.”

Henderson soon became aware of Blueland, which was in need of help but not hiring full-time staff just yet. “Climate and sustainability really weren’t on my radar at this point, but I was drawn to how devoted Blueland’s founders were to these causes.”

Perhaps there was a subconscious connection to environmental awareness. After all, Henderson was head of the Environmental Committee while a student at NCDS. Starting out on a contract-to-hire basis, Henderson was thrown into the deep end of the pool–her happy place. “Blueland launched three months before I started. We were still working out of an investor’s office at this point. I started out with small tasks and laddered up quite quickly,” she said. Henderson was first tasked with customer experience and, before long, found herself fielding everything from public relations to writing for the company’s blog. “I learned the importance of building relationships with the press; I would write them handwritten notes and send them sample products.”

These skills came in handy when Blueland’s founders appeared on the television show Shark Tank in 2019. “I was part of the team that prepared for the huge influx of orders we expected after this appearance,” she remembered.

Henderson’s role at Blueland continued to grow. At one inflection point in her job growth, she was asked if she wanted to focus on brand or growth marketing. “The truth was, I didn’t want to choose one, so I pitched a role where I would contribute to both, and that is what I do now.”

Now, Henderson is the Chief of Staff for Blueland. When the CEO offered her the job, Henderson was — for a moment — reluctant. “I was excited, but I wasn’t 100% convinced that it was the right time. I thought I needed a little more runway first.” But, Henderson told herself and her CEO that there was no way she was going to pass up this opportunity for growth.

These days, Henderson is busier than ever, requiring that characteristic intensity.

“There are a lot of ways to have fun with one’s intensity; context switching and doing multiple things at once is integral to my personality and my current role.” Making it all worthwhile is the environmental protection mission that is now a part of Henderson’s identity. “I came to Blueland because I needed a job, but I stayed because of the mission, our incredible products, and my belief in doing better for the planet.”

After four years at Blueland, Natalie is leaving her role as Chief of Staff this winter in pursuit of roles in physical product development and innovation.

Courage, Conf idence, and Communication AMANDA RUSSO ’03 JOURNEYS THROUGH INTELLIGENCE COMPANIES ACROSS THE GLOBE

by Elizabeth Gallagher ’99 In her career, Amanda Russo ’03 has journeyed through the world of public relations and communications for think tanks and intelligence companies. Her signature "say yes and figure it out” philosophy has propelled her across the globe as she proliferates the work of thought leaders across various industries such as technology, intelligence, and finance.

“If I didn’t attend NCDS, I wouldn’t be able to do what I do today,” said Russo.

“NCDS’ academic rigor and high expectations changed the game for me and prepared me for my life today, where I am constantly learning on the fly and applying recently acquired knowledge to completely new situations,” she continued.

After graduating from NCDS, Russo double majored in English Literature and Political Science at Boston College. She then moved to London to pursue a Master's program in Conflict Studies at the London School of Economics. Her focus shifted toward the complex realms of terrorism and counterinsurgency, setting the stage for her decade-long adventure in the UK. Russo landed her first job in London at an intelligence company called Exclusive Analysis, engaging in counterterrorism analysis until the company merged with the global giant IHS Markit. “Just before the merger, I was asked to move from analysis to communications,” recalled Russo. “‘Courage and Confidence’ was my yearbook quote, and it guides me in my decisions to this day. I said yes to the communications role and told my manager that as long as they were okay with me learning as I go, I’d be thrilled to dive in.” This shift in roles meant a steep and exciting learning curve for Russo. “I branched out from analyzing terrorism risks and learned so much about other topics.”

Not long after this transition, Russo ran IHS’ PR for the prestigious World Economic Forum Annual Meeting (commonly known as “Davos”), a global gathering of heads of state and influential figures. Russo, then only 26, dove headfirst into this high-stakes role, embracing the whirlwind of activities and interactions with figures such as Sheryl Sandberg and John McCain.

During her first Davos experience, Russo met Fon Mathuros, the Head of the World Economic Forum media team. This marked the beginning of her journey with the WEF, as she was later offered the top communications role at the WEF's new technology policy hub in San Francisco. “The chance to work for a female leader who was a mentor and inspiration to me — I couldn’t pass up that opportunity,” recalls Russo.

Under Russo’s leadership, the WEF’s new tech-policy group sought to bridge the worlds of government, technology, and NGOs to discuss the ethical regulation and design of emerging technologies such as bitcoin and selfdriving cars. “We worked with fifteen countries and grew the operation significantly,” explained Russo, who was quickly promoted and moved to Geneva, Switzerland to run all media content at the Forum.

Russo’s happy place is on a learning curve, so when the Crypto Council for Innovation came calling two years ago, her answer was, as always, “yes, and I'll figure it out.” “The Council is a trade organization that exists to promote innovation; to help think about how to regulate crypto in a way that protects consumers,” said Russo. Once again, Russo finds herself at the intersection of new technology and storytelling through PR. Courage and confidence continue to motivate Russo to push right through the boundaries of her intellectual curiosity, making lifelong learning an end in itself.

Elisabeth Crowley writes: “After 63 years in my wonderfully cozy home, I traded for a condo in Scituate and love not having to worry about plowing the driveway!! I’m still subbing K–5 and this year received my ‘over 30 years’ pin from the town. My fourth great-grandchild will arrive in July and it will be nice to have a baby on the east coast since all the others are west of the Mississippi! Penny Kickham Reilly and I communicate occasionally, and I really wish that we who live locally could get together sometime soon… or at least touch base by email. My best wishes to Sr. Rogers in her retirement. I’m sure she’ll miss Newton. God bless.”

Mary Jane Sullivan writes: “I now live in Albany, NY in the Teresian House Center for the Elderly with about eight other RSCJ. Similar to St. Patrick’s Manor in Framingham and Marian Manor in Boston, it is run by the Carmelite Sisters of the Aged and Infirm. Love to all NCDS Alumnae! Those from my school days and those whom I taught!”

Mathilde Guedes McCoy writes: “I continue to operate my medical billing company in Guilford, CT. No thought of retirement! My two sons, Philip and Brian Mahoney have produced six grandchildren, the joy of my life. My sister, Alicia Guedes Franzosa ’64 lives in Milford, Mass. We keep in close contact with Pat Noonan Cronin ’64 and shall all be together this Thanksgiving.”

Class of 1958 Carolyn Slocum writes: “Peter and I are still going strong. We are doing a 12-day cruise around the Med and then spending time with our granddaughter in Monaco and two weeks in England with our daughter and great-grandson who is 12. Then to Hamilton to see our son and grandsons. Just trying to make up for lost time. Love to all.”

Deirdre Grayce Gavin Hager passed away on April 25, 2023. She was the mother of Kristen G. Hager ’88 and Audrey-Maeve Hager Barker ’94. She was also a Latin teacher at the school.

Pam Tosi Hodgkins writes: “Finally, after two years of moving from my son’s home to senior housing, I’m settled in! So very hard, though, to downsize!

Class of 1970 Lise Aubuchon Letendre writes: “My husband Bill and I are enjoying retirement, summering in Cornelius, North Carolina on Lake Norman and wintering in Naples Florida near Marco Island. In September 2022, Hurricane Ian devastated our beloved Sanibel Island where we raised our three sons. In May 2023 we made the decision to sell our island home and relocate to Naples, but not before we buried my oldest sister, Suzy, who died in her sleep in October at the age of 79. On a brighter note, Bill and I are looking forward to some travel in 2024. We will tour Africa in May and Corsica in September.”

Fairfield and my alma mater, Boston College! I am living in Dover, MA and enjoying a new career in real estate after many years in the media business. I am working in the MetroWest area with an office in Wellesley. Reach out if I can help anyone whose nest is a little small or a little full.

Class of 1990 Candice McDonough writes: “I’m EVP of Communications for Warner Bros Pictures Group. My daughter, Brynne, will be six this summer and has acted in eight movies (three filmed in the Boston area). We live in Charleston, SC and travel to Nantucket in the summer.”

Katie Dunton has been active in theater and choral projects during the past two years, as music director of Legally Blonde at a local high school, performing in Gilbert & Sullivan’s musical comedy Iolanthe at Arlington Friends of the Drama, and singing with the Mystic Chorale. When not involved in creative projects, Katie takes care of her two dogs and two cats, and is training her dog Jenny to become a certified therapy dog. Jenny is a loving and exuberant dog who is looking forward to spreading joy at senior centers and assisted living residences. Family vacations included biannual trips to Provincetown and other favorite New England destinations, and Christmas in Italy in 2021. Katie’s stepson is an engineering student at York College, and her stepdaughter is graduating from Arcadia University in 2024 with a dual degree in public health and international studies. Katie enjoyed attending her 40th class reunion and is looking forward to continuing to connect with classmates in the future.

Renata Merino writes: “Exciting news in my world! Not only have I transitioned from serial entrepreneur to the world of venture capital as an investor and venture capitalist supporting and investing in female founders, I also have entered the motivational speaker circuit with my first TEDx, as well as becoming the first venture capital fashion model! Class of 1993 Karen O’Sullivan was inducted into the U.S. Tennis Association of New England Hall of Fame Class of 2023 and enshrined at a ceremony at the International Hall of Fame in Newport, RI this summer. At Duke University she was a two-year captain, two-time All-American and named All-ACC on three occasions, and helped lead Duke to four straight ACC Championships from 1994–97, a perfect 24–0 ACC regular season ledger and two NCAA Final Four appearances. Following her time at Duke, Karen participated in the Professional Women’s Tour in Europe.

As a New England adult tournament player, she has captained and played for both the Sears and Addie Cups. Karen serves on the USTA National Collegiate Committee and has held numerous volunteer roles including on the USTA National Awards Committee and the USTA New England Board of Directors.

Class of 1992 Jennifer Driscoll Maclachlan has been elected to serve as a Councilor of the American Chemical Society representing the Northeastern Local Section. She will act on issues of importance to all chemical scientists representing her constituency.

Meta Ann Ela (Cushing) started a floral design business in 2020. Meta writes: “Since founding Design Flower Fairy, I have enjoyed working with a range of clients to plan their special event and wedding day flowers.

When I am not busy ‘playing with flowers,’ I am focused on raising my two children. Last summer we visited Boston and spent time going through the NCDS campus. It was a meaningful opportunity for me to share memories from my NCDS days and truly amazing to see how the school has expanded!”

Class of 2004 Liz Riley writes: “In April 2023, I ran the 127th Boston Marathon! I ran for a charity organization, the Boston Bulldogs Running Club, a running club for people who are in recovery or impacted by addiction. I raised $10,000 for the club and trained with 15 other club members. It was an incredible experience, and I loved showing my three daughters that their mother could train and run her first marathon while supporting such an important cause.”

Class of 2005 Martina Durant writes: “I recently started a new role as a Senior Program Manager at Advocates for Human Potential. I work as a consultant, providing training and technical assistance to behavioral health organizations facing workforce development challenges.”

Vivian Jablonski (née Buchanan) and her husband Geoff Jablonski welcomed a baby boy on May 2, 2023, Ollie Kevin Jablonski. Ollie was born at Exeter Hospital in New Hampshire, near their home in Newmarket, New Hampshire.

Mel Cybriwsky Meleney writes: “I graduated from MIT with my Masters in Supply Chain in June. Recently I accepted a job at Boeing in Seattle. My husband, Luke, and I are expecting our first child in March!”

Class of 2011 Sofia Carrera received her PhD in Biopsychology from the University of Michigan. She is now a postdoctoral fellow in Biological Anthropology at Northwestern University, studying the effects of early life adversity on reproduction, health, and aging. In August, she will start a postdoctoral research position at the University of Iowa, studying knot theory.

My company hand-makes climbing walls, climbing holds, and other training tools. A key aspect of this company is to facilitate a more accessible, connected, and diverse community, partnering with nonprofits such as the Adaptive Climbers Festival.”

NEW BOARD MEMBERS Peter Connolly P ’23 ’25 Peter is Group Managing Director, Executive Committee member, and head of North America for Cobepa S.A., an international private equity firm. Prior to joining Cobepa, he worked in the Boston office of Summit Partners (2004–2015) and was previously in the New York offices of Goldman, Sachs & Co. and Deloitte. Peter graduated from the University of Notre Dame and the Stern School of Business at NYU, and he is a past member of the Consultative Board of St. Joseph School in Needham and former coach of many youth soccer and basketball teams. He and his wife Marybeth live in Needham with their three children, including Kate ’23 and Julia ’25.

Jen DeSisto P ’25 ’27 Jen is the Chief Investment Officer of Anchor Capital. Previously, she served as a Portfolio Manager at Fiduciary Trust and at Batterymarch Financial. Jen is a graduate of Carnegie Mellon (BS Industrial Management and Economics) and received her MBA from the Sloan School at MIT. She is also on the board for the Perkins School for the Blind and the Boston CFA Society. Jen and her husband John live in Needham with their three daughters, including Maya ’25 and Katie ’27.

Jill Carlson Gunter ’08 Jill is co-founder and Chief Strategy Officer of Espresso Systems. Previously, Jill worked in venture capital firms in San Francisco and New York and, in earlier days, at Goldman Sachs in fixed income trading. Jill has served on the Board of Friends of Harvard-Radcliffe Rowing for the last several years.

She earned her undergraduate degree at Harvard University, followed by a Master of Science at the University of Oxford.

Cassie Jeremie Ramos ’02 Cassie is a Lead Global Mobility Partner at Biogen. She has been an HR Compliance Legal Advisor and Process Expert for Biogen since 2019, focused on employment–related issues. Previously she worked for Foley & Foley, PC, Publicis Groupe, and Mintz Levin. She taught at Newton Country Day School for two years following her graduation from Boston College. Cassie received a Bachelor of Arts and Sciences from Boston College and a Doctor of Law (JD) degree from Loyola University New Orleans School of Law. She and her husband Robert live in Randolph with their daughter and son.

NEW FOR 2023–24 Timothy Gavin P ’24 ’26 Tim’s career has been mainly focused on software companies in the financial services space. He is now involved with his fourth startup. Tim is a graduate of Xaverian Brothers High School and Boston College. He is involved in numerous boards and community organizations, including Xaverian (Vice-Chair), Weston Boy Scouts, town soccer (coach), the Weston-Wayland Rotary, and the Weston Police Relief Association race committee. Tim lives in Weston with his wife Cara and their 9 children, including Meghan ’24 and Bridget ’26, and runs marathons in his ‘free time.’

Katherine Wallace P ’27 Katy is a design consultant on residential renovation projects. Previously, she was a Vice President in the Private Wealth Management Division of Goldman Sachs and Co. and an analyst for the Head of the Morgan Stanley Private Client Group. Katy received her Bachelor of Arts and Sciences from Georgetown University. She is a member of the Georgetown University College Board of Advisors and an interviewer for the Alumni Admissions program. Katy has consistently volunteered at both her children’s schools and is a current co-chair for the Newton Country Day 2024 auction. She serves on the Wellesley United Soccer Board as Treasurer. Katy and her husband Rob live in Wellesley with their two children, including Lilah ’27.

New Initiatives The Cor Unum Scholarship Fund In June 2023, Newton Country Day School received a transformational gift from a generous alumna and her husband who believe deeply in investing in young women and education.

Sacred Heart education is the continuing story of strong and dedicated women true to the Society’s motto: Cor Unum et Anima Una in Corde Jesu, which means ‘One Heart and One Soul in the Heart of Jesus.’

In the spirit of this motto, the first portion of the gift creates The Cor Unum Scholarship Fund to financially assist students matriculating from Catholic Schools that announced their closure at the end of the 2022–2023 academic year. This incredible gift has made a Sacred Heart education possible for a group of outstanding girls who have drawn on a well of resilience and strength in the face of unexpected turmoil. They have found a new academic home here at NCDS and are a vibrant part of our community.

The second part of this gift has been directed toward the Sacred Heart Endowment Matching Gift Challenge. With this generous donation, we are on our way to reaching this $1.5M Challenge.

The final portion of the gift will help meet the co-curricular needs of our community so every student is able to fully engage in the traditions of a Sacred Heart education.

Through the generosity and vision of a Newton Country Day School family, a new endowment has been established in honor of the legacy and leadership of long-serving Headmistress Sister Rogers.

The Sacred Heart Endowment will support tuition assistance, continuing Sister Rogers’ commitment to a diverse community. Sacred Heart Scholars are girls who will share their gifts and talents and become global citizens of courage and confidence.

The endowment was created in the Spring of 2023 with a $1.5M initial gift, and a challenge to our community to match their giving to raise an additional $1.5M by Sister Rogers’ birthday, May 30, 2024.

When we reach this ambitious goal, the donors will generously contribute an additional $1.5M, bringing the full impact of the Sacred Heart Endowment to a minimum of $4.5M in support of tuition assistance.

In 1880, the leadership of St. Madeleine Sophie Barat and the pioneering spirit of St. Rose Philippine Duchesne touched Boston and its surrounding communities with the dedication of a new Sacred Heart School, the 20th to be opened in the United States. The inaugural class of eight girls would become the fortunate beneficiaries of Philippine’s bold vision of bringing Sacred Heart education to the New World.

Today, Newton Country Day School continues to prepare young women to lead lives of courage and confidence by enabling them to respond generously, competently, and responsibly to the demands of their lives and to the needs of others in their communities and across the globe.

The Founders’ Society of Newton Country Day School was established to acknowledge individuals who share Philippine’s spirit and vision for the future. Members include those who remember the School in their estate plans by means of a bequest or planned gift.

Such gifts will ensure that future generations of Newton Country Day School students receive a transformative Sacred Heart education.

by Elena Loukas P ’05 and Beth Gallagher ’99 The 2023 Très Bien Auction was an incredible success, raising over $425,000 in support of a variety of programmatic and building initiatives. Science Department faculty members Rebecca Sen and Genevieve Fein gave an impassioned presentation about the School’s STEM program and the need for equipment to bring to life the Fund-a-Need’s target — the NCDS Innovation Space.

Alexa Riobueno ’13, currently a doctoral student in Counseling Psychology at Boston College, reflected on the opportunities NCDS provided that nourished her hunger for the sciences and inspired her to explore uncharted territories. Students Catherine Morey ’23, Jill Mulvey ’23, and Carys Riffe ’24, along with Middle School students Alessia Velutini ’27 and Sophia Zaphiris ’27, demonstrated the transformative potential of technology by showcasing their Science Fair projects during the event.

Compounding the excitement generated for the Innovation Space was the action of the Live Auction, featuring Fox 25 Boston’s Vanessa Welch and Kevin Lemanowicz. The duo captivated the audience in auctioning off items such as exotic vacations to breathtaking destinations, exclusive Taylor Swift concert tickets, and the thrill of a White Shark Charter from Cape Cod. The Silent Auction featured an equally thrilling collection of items, including a ski getaway, sports memorabilia, golf outings, and tickets to sporting events, such as premium seating at the US Open Tennis Championship.

Congratulations to the 2023 Très Bien Auction Co-Chairs: Christina Knopp P ’24, Amy MacDougall P ’24 ’29, Katy Wallace P ’27, Kristen Weber P ’28 and their dedicated volunteers.
