Headmistress Joy is the infallible sign of the presence of God. – Rev. Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, S.J. Dear Alumnae, Families, and Friends of Sacred Heart, As you read through this edition of Très Bien and look at the photographs of life at Newton Country Day School, you see the joy that Pierre Teilhard de Chardin wisely identified as an infallible indication of the presence of God. Each day the halls of the school fill with the sounds of the girls excitedly sharing their delight in discovery and in being together. Whether it is engaging in research; rehearsing for the fall musical, Mary Poppins; or competing in athletics, it is joy that characterizes the background music at 785 Centre Street.

After nearly three years of restrictions, the school has resumed the traditions dear to the heart of our girls. The impact of social distancing, quarantine, and Zoom classes continues to have an effect. It is clear that Goal V, personal growth in an atmosphere of wise freedom, is the appropriate focus for the transition to post-pandemic learning.

Responding to the challenge to improve mental and physical wellness, Newton has developed a curriculum designed to bolster resilience in each student. The support of our donors makes it possible for the school to continue to respond to the everevolving needs of the girls.

An outstanding example of this generosity is the establishment of the Sheehan Scholars

by Maureen Cortelli Sheehan’51 and her husband Jerry. We are deeply grateful to Maureen and Jerry for this transformative gift that provides tuition assistance for members of the Class of 2026. They, like all of our benefactors and friends, make it possible for the school to continue to carry out the vision of Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat; to make known the love of the heart of Jesus.

May the wellspring of the heart of Jesus continue to inspire our teachers, girls and families!

Campus Highlights: In the Classroom and Beyond Faith and Service PRAYING FOR PEACE In March, Elizabeth Kudinova ’22 shared a personal story with the greater NCDS community in a letter.

I’m Elizabeth Kudinova, and I’m a senior at NCDS. My parents immigrated to the United States from Ukraine in 2001, but the rest of my family is in Ukraine right now, sheltering in Kiev’s subway stations, bomb shelters, and basements while bullets and bombs rain outside.

My uncles, godfathers, and my parents’ best friends from childhood have all picked up arms and been deployed to protect their homeland; to protect democracy. Here in America, all my family can do is constantly watch the news, call and worry, and show our support and spread awareness from four thousand miles away. I want to thank everyone who was able to attend Thursday’s information session about the crisis. It means a lot to know that you want to learn more about the issue. I also wanted to personally thank everyone who has reached out, offered their thoughts and prayers, and asked for more resources on the issue.

Goal III states that schools of the Sacred Heart commit themselves to educate to a social awareness which impels action. I am glad to see Goal III come to life in our school community this past week. I want to continue to encourage everyone to learn about the conflict, the history behind it, and the global impact it makes. Please continue to pray for everyone affected by this war. Pray for peace in this time of great turmoil, and ask God to protect the people of Ukraine and keep them strong.

I would like to invite participants to make a monetary donation to support relief efforts for those impacted by the war. Donations can be made in the form of cash or check written out to Newton Country Day School for the Ukrainian Relief Fund. Donations will be given to an organization that provides emergency medical supplies and humanitarian relief to the Ukrainian people affected by the war.

I want to thank Mairin Williams ’25 and the rest of the ninth grade for organizing the medical supplies drive. I hope that we can join together as a school community to support our brothers and sisters defending democracy abroad and continue to live out Goal III.

In April, the community received the following update: Our community spiritually responded to the needs of the Ukrainian people through prayers and vigils. We have donated medical supplies and raised $8,700 in aid. The General Council of the Society of the Sacred Heart, based in Rome, established a fund to support initiatives that assist victims.

Specifically, our Religious of the Sacred Heart in Poland and Hungary are currently supporting refugees from the Ukraine. In our broken and blessed world, we join in prayer for peace and stability, and we unite our efforts in working for justice.

In November, the Upper School Service Committee focused on food insecurity, running a food drive for Catholic Charities. Members of the committee also volunteered at the Catholic Charities food pantry, where they helped assemble over 500 bags of food to be distributed to residents.

The Parents’ Association Service Committee continued its effort to carry on Sacred Heart Goal IV, the building of community as a Christian value, by dedicating the Thanksgiving service project to community-based, non-profit organizations that focus on supporting women as head of households. Newton families donated gift cards, worth over $14,000, from Shaw’s, Roche Brothers, Target, Market Basket, and Village Market, to Boston area nonprofits, including Julie’s Family Learning Program and St. Mary’s Center for Women and Children. 200 families received money for a Thanksgiving meal because of the generosity of NCDS families.

In honor of Veterans’ Day, Middle and Upper School students wrote more than 300 letters to veterans thanking them for their service. The letters of gratitude were delivered to local VA hospitals and organizations.

In December, Upper School girls created 50 “outreach kits” for the Pine Street Inn containing common toiletries, hand

warmers, snacks, and dental products for those living in Boston without housing.

Advisory groups also collected gift cards and made Christmas cards to distribute to families at Harbor Point. The Middle School collected gifts for the Spirit of Sharing drive for St. Patrick’s Parish in Lawrence. Items included warm clothes, toys, games, and arts and crafts.

Blind 5K and Walk for Independence.

Their team placed first and raised $1,500.

The Environmental Committee held a self-care sale with proceeds benefiting Under The Mango Tree, an organization that helps maintain the quality of life and habitats in rural India.

The Upper School Service committee raised money for Sacred Heart Schools in Uganda through t-shirt sales.

Grade 5 students with books for More Than Words

Grade 5 organized a book drive to benefit More Than Words, a nonprofit that empowers youth who are in the foster care system, court involved, homeless, or out of school to take charge of their lives by taking charge of a business. Their efforts contributed over 400 books. During the school year, Middle School students also raised money for NEADS World Class Service Dogs, MSPCA-Angell, and Perkins School for the Blind.

AGAPE LATTE BRINGS COMMUNITY TOGETHER IN FAITH Agape Latte, a faith and storytelling series in which adults share stories from their own experience of faith and spirituality, invites Upper School students to an evening of community building through faith.

The inaugural event of the year featured a talk by English teacher Ryan Murphy, and a performance of “Slipping Through My Fingers” by ABBA, sung by Maria Musto ’22, Rebecca Simon ’22, Lily Deal ’23, and Sophia He ’23. Assistant Head of Upper School Kate Spelman spoke at the second event.

“The goal of Agape Latte is to bring people together in faith and cultivate our community through storytelling about personal faith and spiritual journeys,” said Agape Latte co-heads Elizabeth Ascione ’22 and Liza Hayes ’22. “Especially after Très Bien Magazine 5

many COVID-filled years, we wanted it to feel inviting and welcoming to everyone and were so happy with the turnout.

We were also excited to have our guest speakers deliver powerful and love-filled talks. It is important for Agape to be at Newton because it is a chance for everyone to see how faith can impact our everyday lives and highlights that personal faith journeys can be different.”

Proceeds from merchandise and food sales from the evenings were donated to Hearth, a non-profit organization in Boston dedicated to ending elderly homelessness.

SACRED HEART NETWORK Sister Rogers and Newton Country Day School were delighted to host the annual Membership Conference of the Sacred Heart Network of North America last

April. Over 80 Heads of School and Board Chairs traveled from 20 states and two countries to convene in Newton.

After a three-year hiatus, this community joyfully reunited to recommit themselves to the mission of Sacred Heart education.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion NCDS CELEBRATES HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH

proud to be from a Hispanic Country and be able to share my roots with my peers.”

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Newton Country Day showcased the contributions of the Hispanic community in the form of presentations, displays, and art.

Additional recognitions included a collaborative display of personal accounts of Hispanic Heritage put together by OLAS and members of the Middle School Latinx affinity group. The project was an opportunity for the Middle and Upper School affinity group members to collaborate for the first time in creating a celebration together.

In an email to the Newton community, Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Ursula August noted that the month, “...is an opportunity to celebrate the history, lives, experiences, challenges, and accomplishments of people of Latin American origin, and the contributions of the Hispanic community to the United States.” August also shared a list of National Hispanic Heritage Month exhibits and resources for students, faculty, and staff to view both online and in-person.

Professor and author Jennifer De Leon led assemblies for the Middle and Upper School as part of our celebrations.

“Hearing from Jennifer De Leon was so affirming that everywhere girls are being able to see themselves more reflected in society and how incredible it is to have people that look like us and are like us be the role models we aspire to be!” shared OLAS (Organization of Latin American Students) co-head Kiki Ferreira ’22. “Not only is Hispanic Heritage Month a time to celebrate where we have come from, but to celebrate the influence of many other Latin country cultures,” added OLAS co-head Valerie Peck ’22. “I am extremely 6 Fall 2022

In May, Middle and Upper School students participated in Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month celebrations, led by the Asian Students in America (ASIA) affinity group. Activities included Chinese jump rope, henna tattoos, and yo-yos.

In observance of the Lunar New Year, girls learned about the holiday’s traditions, practiced calligraphy, and created paper flowers. The Upper School gathering offered activity stations with trivia about the holiday, information about the animals of the Chinese Zodiac, how to use chopsticks, and calligraphy. During their Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion assembly, Middle School girls commemorated the day with help from Ms. Yu’s Chinese class, which created an informative video about Lunar New Year with instructions on how to construct Chinese paper flowers.

Kaelea Severino ’24 and Alexandra Fernand ’22 led a discussion with local filmmaker Darrus Sands about his film “Voices on King 2022: Reflections on Black Boston.” The Upper School watched the film ahead of his visit.

As a part of Black History month celebrations, Grade 8 students presented quilt squares that celebrated the diversity of the Black experience in the United States through the lens of individuals and their contributions to history.

It was a banner year for Newton Country Day in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, earning the third highest total number of writing awards in Massachusetts with 50. The awards were given to 30 different writers, marking the most writing awards NCDS has received in a single year. Newton students previously received nine writing awards in 2020 and 28 in 2021. Gold Keys were earned in Poetry, Short Story, and Humor, as well as in the highly prestigious categories of Novel Writing and Senior Portfolio.

Out of Newton’s 50 Scholastic Writing awards, 8 Gold Key winners advanced to the National competition, where two NCDS students earned additional regional and national awards. Genevieve Jobson’s ’22 Novel Climb the Night was selected as the Best 12th Grade Novel in New England, Georgia Brucato’s ’22 Senior Writing Portfolio “The Factors” earned a national Silver Medal, and English Department Chair Evan Adair won a national Outstanding Educator award for his dedication, commitment, and guidance.

For the annual poetry competition, students were asked to write an original poem using the theme “Voices.” Poets were recognized for their unique perspectives, insights, and language.

“The submissions varied wildly in style and content, but each poem illuminated an important aspect of our shared human existence,” commented Adair. “The entries offered unique perspectives, keen insights, and strikingly beautiful language. We are extremely proud of all the participants.”

Madeleine Kim ’28 was selected as one of the 45 winners of the NASA “Power to Explore Challenge,” a national essay competition for K–12 students featuring the enabling power of radioisotopes.

Contestants were challenged to explore how NASA has powered some of its most famous missions across the solar system while sharing their own unique “super” powers.

The ‘Power to Explore Challenge’ was an exciting opportunity for our students to learn about current space exploration endeavors and to highlight the quality that the students each embody that will help them achieve their lifelong goal.”

“Hennessey and Schlichtmann presented their project to a panel of judges and answered questions for 30 minutes with courage and confidence,” commented Director of the Independent Research Program Dr. Sarah Webster. “We are so proud to have them represent our school, and the Commonwealth, at such a prestigious event!”

Athletics No one could have predicted how Newton’s athletic teams would fare at the start of the 2021–22 school year.

Some athletes had not competed in their sport in two years, some had only practiced their indoor sport outside the previous year, and others had yet to see how their classmates from the last two years were as teammates.

“I do not think any of us (the girls and the coaches) realized how much we missed working and being together until we had the opportunity to compete again in all of our sports last year,” said Director of Athletics and Varsity Field Hockey coach Kimberly Southall. “We had no idea what it 10 Fall 2022

would be like, as some of our girls had not played a sport in a year and a half.

“Our successes in the fall and the energy from our first Homecoming in two years were great ways to kick off the year,” Southall continued. “We had sophomores and juniors who had never played on an Upper School team before. Last year was the first regular spring sports season we had in three years. The achievements we had cannot be overlooked and are a testament to our girls; especially the senior class, and the captains.”

The successes Southall refers to began when her Varsity Field Hockey team was crowned the Eastern Independent League (EIL) Champions and had an

undefeated regular season. The squad clinched the #1 seed in the NEPSAC (New England Preparatory School Athletic Council) Class C Tournament — beating an athletic New Hampton in the quarter final, and defeating EIL rival Pingree in double overtime to advance to the finals against another EIL competitor, the Winsor School.

NCDS beat Winsor twice during the regular season, but came up short in the NEPSAC championship game, losing 1–2. Jane Bresnahan ’23 was named EIL Player of the Year and Southall earned an additional league honor as EIL Coach of the Year.

Around Campus

FALL Varsity Soccer advanced to the semi-finals of the EIL Tournament. For the first time in 10 seasons, the team earned a spot in the New England Tournament.

Varsity Volleyball was the EIL Tournament champion. The team earned the #5 seed in the New England Tournament, where it defeated Kingswood Oxford in the first round of play.

At the Wickham Park Invitational, with 140 runners competing, every Varsity Cross Country runner earned a medal. The team finished the season at EILs as the fastest team Newton has ever had, placing second.

NCDS also finished 8th out of 16 division II schools at New England’s.

Three Varsity crew boats competed in the Head of the Charles Regatta, including the youngest 8+ boat in the event.

WINTER Varsity Basketball’s record of 10–7 marked the most wins the team has recorded in a decade and the second consecutive winning season. NCDS placed third in the EIL and qualified for the EIL Tournament. In the semi-finals, the team upset #2 Pingree to play in the EIL tournament championship game for the first time in 17 years. The team was ranked in New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) top 10 in Class A for the month of February.

Varsity Dance placed first at the Starquest Competition in the category of Novice Level, Large Group and at the Believe Talent Competition in Beginner Large Group for lyrical dance and second in jazz.

Middle School A basketball had an undefeated season with a record of 15–0.

“As a rower, the 2021–22 athletic seasons were exciting because the team was back in boats instead of using rowing machines on land,” said Crew captain Elizabeth McDougall ’23. “Being able to race on the water tightened our team bond. I love being able to gather at the boathouse with the team after school and spend time together. My favorite race was the Head of the Charles, where people from all over the country gathered to watch us row for the first time since 2020 because of the pandemic.”

“Spectators are the backbone of sporting events, so seeing parents and our peers out on the course cheering after an abbreviated season with strict spectating rules was special,” said Cross Country captain Delaney Woolbert ’23. “I am so thankful that my teammates and I can compete regularly again. Events like Homecoming, which are brought to life by cheering crowds, help us bond as a team, motivating us to strive for growth throughout the season.”

“As a new student at NCDS last year, athletics helped me feel like part of the community,” commented Grace Grant ’26. “Between bagels on long bus rides, team dinners at Bertucci’s, and rainy Monday soccer practices in the Sunken Garden, sports made me feel like I belonged at Newton Country Day. Throughout the season I learned so much from my coaches while still having tons of fun. Having teammates supporting me from the bench and fans cheering us on at games took away unneeded stress and added feelings of accomplishment.”

“Being able to compete with my teammates was a great way to start off my first year at NCDS,” added Sophie Tournet ’26. “After the previous restrictions, playing in front of fans and against other schools reminded me how much I enjoy sports. I loved getting to bond with my teammates and playing for such amazing coaches.”

“Sports have always been a big part of my life and being able to play again at NCDS meant the world to me,” said Nina Devito ’27 “Whether it was a tough practice or the biggest win of the season, I will never take for granted being able to step out onto the court/ field with my teammates.”

“When I think of NCDS athletics in the last year, the two words that

come to mind are spirit and heart,” said Soccer, Basketball, and Golf captain Jillian Mulvey ’23. “Given the circumstances, our coaches and athletes excelled on and off the fields and courts. Each player gave it their absolute all every single day. Playing in front of crowds made this past year of sports competitive, lively, and one I will never forget.”

“A year ago teams were practicing on outdoor courts and dancing in the parking lot, surrounded by snow,” recalled Southall. “We are impressed with how the teams came together and all of the success they had. Athletics is an important part of educating the whole child. How fortunate we are to have these opportunities again for our girls.”

Congè After not having a full, all-school, in-person Congè for two years, NCDS held the Congè Met Gala fashion show on April 6. Teams were tasked with designing and making their best Met Gala looks out of the limited supplies they received. The Reardon Family Gymnasium in the Martin Center acted as our Metropolitan Museum of Art as girls in Grades 5–12 were cheered on by their classmates as they walked the runway.

“It was exciting to perform in front of an audience because no one in my grade had the chance to perform at NCDS before,” said Marquisha Spencer ’27. “Last year everybody had the chance to experience what it was like to be a part of a show together with dancing, singing, and more. Although it took a long time, it was worth it to see how everything fit together after never being able to have the Celebration of the Arts experience.”

In 2021–22, Newton’s singers, dancers, and visual artists were able to share their talents live for the first time since Winter 2019. The Sweeney-Husson Theatre housed two musicals: the Upper School’s presentation of Footloose, and the Middle School performance of Matilda, Jr. In December, Middle and Upper School Advent Vespers found a new home in our Chapel. While the performers and families were masked due to the COVID-19 protocols at the time, the beloved Liturgy of the Advent season was back. The Festival of the Arts (Upper School) and the Celebration of the Arts (Middle School) showcased the many talents of our artists in The Sweeney-Husson Theatre, the Chapel, and Barat Commons in the spring.

“Inviting the greater NCDS community to enjoy the students’ visual art and performances in person was incredibly exciting,” said Chair of Performing and 18 Fall 2022

Fine Arts Melissa Davenport P’29. “You engage with a piece of artwork in a different way when you see it in person rather than if you view it through a screen.

Being able to perform live helped the girls remember how integral the performing arts are to Goal IV. What we do in order to prepare our girls for performance, and the act of performing itself, is transformative. It aids them in discovering entirely new things about themselves.”

Middle and Upper School students agreed with all of Davenport’s sentiments, as they reflected on what performing lives means to them.

“Being back on stage felt like a breath of fresh air and added to the collection of routines allowing us to settle back into ‘normal,’” commented dancer Sophia Beaver ’25. “I will never forget the broad smile on my face and my tingling excitement as the curtain went up for the first time in a long time. and transporting them to another world.

Whatever the outcome of a show is, I want the audience to walk out of the theater feeling something. Most people think that to act, you have to put on a mask of make-believe and cover yourself up. When in reality, acting is about exposing yourself and getting deep into your emotions. It’s about the most vulnerable state one can be in. I loved meeting and working with my castmates, (majority in younger grades), who quickly became close friends of mine. All of the creative ideas that went into the show made it magical, and I am truly grateful to have been in it.”

“To perform in front of the school community last year was both exciting and challenging,” added Sophia He ’23.

“Performing is not just a one-time occasion but a lifestyle. It allows me to see not only myself but also my classmates who are on stage with me in a new light.

Performing together with a team always makes the bonds of our community stronger. However, because I had not been back on stage for a while, I had to start from zero in terms of getting used to performing in front of a live audience instead of the mirror in my room. The situation forced me to be vulnerable, but I also left the stage feeling stronger.

Though the past few years have presented many obstacles, they have also evoked in me more respect for the art of performing as a whole and gratitude for being able to partake in its power.”

The Class of 2022 Graduates

Newton Country Day’s 142nd Graduation Ceremony was held in the Sunken Garden on Thursday, June 9. The rain stopped just in time for the families of the 66 graduates of the Class of 2022 gathered under the tent to celebrate the resilience and hard work of the senior class.

After the procession into the tent, Headmistress Sister Barbara Rogers welcomed everyone before introducing Class President Grace Connelly ’22. Connelly gave the Invocation before the Mary Quinlan Salutatory Address was delivered by Bridget Baker ’22.

“Over the past four years, we have become accustomed to definitions changing, evolving as the world around us shifted,” said Baker. “We have pivoted, adapted, and adjusted in the face of new challenges. But we did not let these challenges, from physical distance to modified retreats, define us as a class. Rather than be limited by what we thought was supposed to happen, we learned that how we responded to obstacles made all the difference. We are not a class that can be solely defined by our unusual sophomore and junior years. We are instead a class that persevered through online classes and masked smiles; we can be celebrated for the qualities we have developed and the character we have built in response to these unforeseen times.

“What will characterize us as individuals moving forward? For each one of us, our journey will be different. But as the Five Goals of the Sacred Heart have taught us, the lessons of faith, determination, compassion, community, and introspection will aid us as we strive to make the world just a little bit of a better place,” Baker concluded.

66 members of the Class of 2022 received diplomas, academic prizes, and Sacred Heart awards. They follow a 142-year tradition of Sacred Heart education in Boston.

Former Chair of the Performing Arts Department John Sullivan then addressed the crowd, delivering the Graduation Address and offering advice for the graduates.

“As you begin to think about your future, here is my list of things which I think are of utmost importance for happiness and success: be kind, have a good sense of humor, make wise decisions, learn from your mistakes, be curious and passionate, be empathetic, learn the importance of being a good listener,” offered Sullivan.

“Be a champion for social justice. Think both locally and globally and commit to causes that will affect change. Do what you love, both in your personal life and your professional life. Write your own story, not the story others have for you. People will have opinions about what you should do with your life, but remember that you are the author of your own story. Trust your instincts and listen to your inner voice.

Your happiness will depend on it. With a nod to Robert Frost, if your story means that you will choose the road less traveled, good for you. Dare to be different. The world needs your courage and resolve.”

After the conferring of the diplomas, Alice Husson Prize recipient Ashley Folz ’22 took the stage to thank the faculty and staff. Folz gave extra praise to the faculty’s ability to teach, and be creative, both over Zoom and in-person classes.

“There has never been a moment when the NCDS faculty haven’t given it their all, even with the pandemic,” Folz stated. “Although many Zoom classes were spent trying not to laugh at the jokes in the chat or one of my classmates’ virtual backgrounds, all of my teachers worked hard to make our classes as engaging as ever. Many of my teachers used this opportunity to have fun dress up days or host an interesting guest speaker that we would not have been able to meet with otherwise.

“To all of our teachers, you are valued and appreciated, and although it may not seem like it at times, we are always listening to the wisdom and knowledge you give us so selflessly.”

After the distribution of prizes, Rebecca Simen ’22 delivered the Janet Erskine Stuart Valedictory Address. While echoing the challenges of the Class of 2022’s sophomore and junior years as a result of COVID-19, Simen also acknowledged how overcoming adversity led to a tightknit class of seniors.

“Senior year, we were given the task of picking up the pieces, and I’ll be the first to say we did not take that responsibility lightly,” Simen began. “We had an amazing time at Blue-Silver Induction, Halloween, and other events. We formed communities in our affinity groups, sports teams, arts, and committees.

Guided by our amazing student leaders, the Class of ’22 rebuilt this school into a community that’s stronger than ever.

“When I look back on my experience at NCDS, I’m pretty sure I won’t reminisce about Zoom classes or my report card.

We overcame one of the largest challenges life could have thrown at us. We will inevitably face many more challenges in our futures, but I’m confident that the amazing education we’ve received from NCDS will enable us to meet our obstacles head-on and change the world in doing so. This class is powerful, and I’m so excited to see all of you thrive.”

After the Sacred Heart Goal Awards were distributed, Chair of the Board of Trustees Maura T. Murphy ’99 delivered the closing prayer. Families then joined their graduates for photos and celebration as they were welcomed into our alumnae community.

Upper School Change in Leadership In a letter to the community in April, Sister Rogers announced exciting leadership changes in the Upper School for the 2022–23 school year.

Dear Families, The girls have returned from the celebration of Easter full of enthusiasm and energy for the last quarter of the academic year. As we plan for next year, I want to let you know about several changes in the Upper School.

Mrs. Kathleen Scully Hodges has, for many years, had dual roles in her capacity as Assistant Head of School and Head of the Upper School. Mrs. Scully Hodges will become the Associate Head of School with a broad portfolio for ensuring the continued fidelity to the mission as laid out in the Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart Schools.

The role of Assistant Head of School will be assumed by Ms. Nicole Noel to serve as a strategic thought partner for the Heads of School and the Administrative Team. Ms. Noel will convene and collaborate with the school’s key leaders as well as foster initiatives of the national and international Network of Sacred Heart Schools.

Stepping into the role of Head of Upper School is Ms. Melissa Bleakney-Dalton. A key responsibility of the Upper School Head is supporting the professional growth of colleagues through mentoring

and professional development. The Upper School Head maintains and develops Newton Country Day’s dynamic learning environment while fostering communication with parents.

Moving into the role of Assistant Head of Upper School, Ms. Katherine Spelman will work with the Head of the Upper School and grade level Deans to oversee programs that deepen the sense of belonging and engagement for each student in the Upper School.

I have great confidence in each of these talented women who, along with the Director of Academic Logistics, Mrs. Martha Haddad; Middle School Head Dr. Deborah Tully; and Assistant Middle School Head Ms. Catherine Barber, join me in giving life to the vision of Saint Madeleine Sophie to make known the love of the heart of Jesus.

Liza Hayes ’22 A Reading from the Gospel according to John: Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot.

They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?”

“They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.” At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus.

He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?”

Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.”

Jesus said to her, “Mary.”

She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”).

Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them that he had said these things to her.

When I was younger, my family drives to Rockport were no walk in the park. My twin brothers and I enjoyed throwing things, bouncing up and down, and playing the occasional game (usually “I’m thinking of an animal,” which tended to get very heated). At a certain point, the three of us would simultaneously ask the one question that made my father’s face glow red with anger: “Are we there yet?”

As the years have passed, I have come to understand why this question brought my dad so much irritation. First off, it’s annoying, but most importantly, I was missing the joy of the journey, of getting there. It was easy to complain and misbehave and argue, and miss the fun of traveling somewhere with the people I loved most. I can’t help but connect this lesson to my time at NCDS. Often, it felt like I was asking the same things: When’s the next long weekend? When’s class over? When can I go home?

I would rush through the motions of each day, hoping to maintain my routine, keep my grades up, and properly care for myself, all while worrying about my future and keeping my eyes glued on the clock.

We were both truly present in that moment — free from worry, free from responsibility, free from stress, free from time — I allowed myself to simply be present with him.

In today’s Gospel, Mary Magdalene is weeping, worried, anxious, and devastated over the death of Jesus so much that she can’t see that He is actually right in front of her.

How many of us can relate to that? After Mary realizes that it was Jesus, she exclaims, “Teacher!” Over the past four years at NCDS, I have been lucky enough to have teachers who have reminded me to stay present, and not miss the journey.

As you may have heard, senior fall is not easy. I found myself trapped in an endless cycle of long school days,

sports, college applications, hours of work, and not enough sleep. One day I was walking in the hallway and saw Mr. Peach, who was my college advisor and English teacher last year. He said hi, smiled, and said that we should catch up. Whenever I saw Mr. Peach after that, we kept agreeing that we needed to meet. With my busy schedule, I struggled to set aside any free time. Finally, I decided I could sacrifice a free period so we could spend some time together. We sat in the two, comfortable chairs outside of Ms. Hodges’s office and talked for a while. It was a lovely conversation about my plan for college, creative writing, my life, his life, and a poem he wrote. The poem was about his granddaughter, who was playing outside and picked up a frog. While she held the frog in her palm, Mr. Peach was overcome by a strong feeling of protection for her. While he was talking about it, his eyes shimmered and there was a look of utmost love on his face. He then read me the poem (which was quite good) and then we realized we had spent the whole period together. We said our goodbyes and I left for my next class. As I was walking away, I realized that taking the time to talk with Mr. Peach was the happiest I had been all week. We were both truly present in that moment–free from worry, free from responsibility, free from stress, free from time — I allowed myself to simply be present with him. I truly reflected on this — why was it so hard for me to set time aside to enjoy myself? Since when had I become so obsessed with time?

Just like Mary, why couldn’t I see what was right in front of me? That moment shifted my perspective on my week and my overall school year for the better.

As I stand here, I remember all of the cramming for tests, sports practices, Vespers, congès, early morning homework, homecomings, class meetings, retreats, bus rides, and last minute coffee runs. At the time, maybe I didn’t see the full beauty in all of those moments, just like those trips to Rockport with my family. However, like Mary in the Gospel, I’m glad that my eyes have opened.

I urge you all to cherish every moment, the good and the ugly, and to not miss the journey. I know it’s tempting to ask “are we there yet?” But trust me, you’ll get there.

When tasked to write a poem about a voice, One first asks if theirs has any presence.

Be it influential, diminishing, or muted by their choice, If it’s just a bunch of sounds then really what’s the difference?

One might wonder if their voice even matters in the first place, Do your words hold any worth or are you too righteous to lie?

They conclude that they have nothing to their name except their face.

What good is there for voices that don’t know not to cry?

If struggling, they’ll listen close to all who earned success, Yearning for an easy way to make their voice a movement.

But if it’s hard, or if it’s meant for someone trained for this, Then how are they expected to see any improvement?

And if they’re shy or if they’re soft or if they lack a will What good would come from putting them in front of us to lead?

The gentler ones are stepping stones for loud ready to kill, What better than the quiet as a mop for their misdeeds?

And when it’s time for you to claw and scramble for the win, You sit and wait and wonder if your voice is strong enough.

But when you’re judged on poems about a voice within, They’ll judge you not on presence, but on your lack thereof.

I paint in every color for every color that she may choose to be.

I paint in hopes that she will hear my voice, reflect, and realize it is her own.

I paint pictures so that she can see the words create a mirror— one that will heal her.

I hope that she too will witness the words on the page turn to colors.

GREEN LENS

ZAPOMNI NI - REMEMBER US DOBRE DOSHŬL U DOMA

by Robin Hall ’22 Making the familiar two hour journey, from the city, through the mountains, and then to the place where my mom calls home. Finally turning onto familiar streets, recognizing apartments, the shops, the elementary school and then finally making a right turn onto Rila Drive. Before we even pull up to the apartment I see my grandpa, whom I call Dyado, wearing his familiar shapka and shuffling down the driveway waving his arms to greet us. We pull up, put the car in park, and the long awaited moment of homecoming arrives. Dyado comes around to each door, opening it for us, taking our hands and pulling us into a warm embrace.

He helps lug the enormous suitcases from the truck and then finally says the American phrase he practiced before we arrived. “Welcome home, family!” I walk over and give him yet another hug, then say “Zdravei Dyado! Kak si?” My Bulgarian comes right back to me like it never left. Immediately recognizing the voice of my grandparents, I’m taken back to every summer with time spent in their little flat surrounded by their exuberance as they have waited all year for these couple weeks they get to spend with us.

Dyado The familiar scent of Irish Spring floods my nose as I go to embrace him. Warm sweater, corduroys, slippers, and a hat. The hug always followed with “Obicham te tolkova mnogo” or when wanting to practice his English, “I love you so much.”

Always offering shokolad or bon bons, pulling them out of the cabinet as if they are crown jewels. Coming over to cover me with a blanket while watching television and always making sure I’ve had enough to eat. Remembering the joyous laughter and squeals caused by him bouncing my sister and me on his knees, exclaiming “konche, konche!” and clicking like a fast running horse. The kindest and most thoughtful of souls, making sure everyone else is warm, full, and happy before thinking of himself.

Baba Waiting upstairs for us to come home. She greets us with her warm smile, a hug, and a kiss on each cheek. Outside on a walk, holding her small, soft hand, slowing my pace to match her small strides. Sitting around the table listening to the folk music streaming on the television with her softly singing along to her favorite songs.

She looks for her reading glasses and pen before settling down to complete the daily crossword puzzle in the newspaper. Then picking up her latest knitting project, teaching me patiently as I go along with her. Getting up to start dinner, a long labor of love, always homemade and delicious.

Gotvene Baba starts by getting the ingredients out on the counter and then delegating tasks to my sister and me. She often does the washing and peeling, letting my sister and I do the fun parts like cutting and mixing. We stand the three of us like an assembly line. Baba in front of the sink washing the tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers. My sister next to her peeling the vegetables, and finally me cutting them into pieces in a mythodic rhythm. The low hum of the folk music streaming from the TV surrounds the kitchen while we engage in lively conversation. Baba asking us about our lives back at home, our school, friends, and hopes for the future. As we continue cooking she takes charge, asking my sister and I to grab various ingredients and

tools from around the kitchen, testing our Bulgarian vocabulary all the while.

While cooking she gives off little slivers of wisdom, how to perfectly prepare banitsa or better chop the vegetables for shopska. This time is filled with laughter and conversation that bonds us together and leaves us with memories to cherish for the next year.

Ramka na Kartina Each morning when I wake up I lift my head off the pillow and look up at the bookshelf in front of me. I look straight to the top shelf where I see a picture of myself, as a little girl, and my grandparents. I read the familiar writing that says “Dear Robin, Baba and Dyado love you infinitely! Be healthy and happy. Listen to Mama and Daddy! We love you beautiful child! Remember us!” This picture frame didn’t mean as much to me a few years ago. I still remember the day my grandpa made it for me, crafting the picture frame with the note and the pictures on their last visit to the United States, before they became too old to fly the long journey. That was long ago, I was young and naive and didn’t realize what this picture fram actually meant.

I looked at the words, “Remember us” and thought little of their significance, thinking that my grandpa was exaggerating when he wrote this and wondering why I would have to remember them if I got to see them every summer. Now the meaning has changed. From being a daily reminder of my grandparents living far away in Bulgaria, to being a daily reminder of my grandparents even farther away in heaven. Now I look at those words and remember the beautiful memories I formed with them both while they were still here, and am stung with the sadness in knowing I never got to say goodbye. If only I got to say the words one more time, obicham te tolkova mnogo Dyado y Baba.

FROM GENEVIEVE JOBSON’S ’22 NOVEL CLIMB THE NIGHT Sandrine was like a summer reed, the way she moved. And she had deep brown eyes shaded by a reddish-brown fringe. Hélène thought she’d never seen such soulful eyes. Sandrine took their group of fugitives, including Hélène, Delphine, and Gabriel, and led them out of the inn, towards the river.

“Don’t mess up,” she told them bluntly.

“If I have to leave you, I will.” Hélène remembered those eyes, though; she’d put money on Sandrine being a secret martyr.

They loaded into a small rowboat.

Delphine had to actually lay on top of Hélène, who could feel the mucky water seeping into her pinafore and some unpleasant pond scum plastered to her leg.

Several times during the journey Hélène experienced the horrible sensation of feeling like the boat would tip her out, sending her crashing into the water like a dead fish. Once docked on the opposite bank, Hélène prepared to shift Delphine off her, but before she could move a muscle, Sandrine froze.

Even though Hélène could only see Sandrine’s black outline, her posture instructed her to remain still and quiet.

Sandrine motioned that they should all remain in place, lying like sardines in the rowboat. She herself then got into the water under the shadow of the boat and remained perfectly still.

Flashlights flicked through the tall grass behind the bank. Hélène listened carefully for dogs, but did not hear any.

If she had, she might have tried to swim back to where they came from. Those in the boat hardly breathed. Who were the flashlight-wielders looking for? How close would they come?

For a quarter of an hour, the searchers combed through the meadow, while Hélène and her companions remained on the verge of nervous collapse. All Hélène could do was turn her head to the left and catch Gabriel’s eye.

Eventually though, the searchers seemed to give up. Sandrine still made them stay where they were for another hour, just to make sure the searchers were truly gone. “It’s a technique. If they can’t find you, they pretend to leave, wait for you to come out, and then nab you,” she explained.

When Sandrine gave the all-clear, Hélène stumbled out of the boat clumsily, having long lost feeling in her limbs from Delphine laying on her. She barely noticed the craggy mountains obscuring portions of the endlessly starry sky. Sandrine led them through the meadow, along a dirt path, across what seemed like part of a farm, and along another dirt path to a small stone house buried beneath the shadows of the foothills. They huddled outside the door. “We wanted to get you into the mountains tonight, but that damn search took so long, you won’t be able to reach the next safehouse in time. You’ll have to stay here until tomorrow night.”

She knocked delicately on the roughhewn wooden door. A gray-haired woman opened it a sliver. She recognized Sandrine and ushered them in.

Once they were all in and the woman had bolted the door, Sandrine introduced her. “Philomène.” Philomène licked her lips and nodded gravely.

“They’ll have to stay in the basement,” she said, kicking open a trap door and descending down a ladder. The others followed. Before he went down, Gabriel went over to Sandrine. “What about Pierre?”

“He’s staying somewhere else tonight,” she said.

“Why wasn’t he the one to lead us here?

Seems awfully complicated for you to do it.”

Sandrine gave a short laugh. “Because he’s more valuable than me. He’s the one who actually knows the mountains.” She gestured for him to climb down the ladder.

Down in the basement it was cool.

Philomène handed down a bucket to serve as a toilet, and another filled with water, and then finally passed down a loaf of bread before shutting the trap door and plunging them into complete darkness.

Hélène fell asleep almost immediately.

When she woke, there was no way to tell whether it was daytime, but she felt rested and optimistic enough to assume that it was. She found herself slumped near Gabriel, who was also awake. Delphine still lay sprawled, fast asleep, nearby.

She inched closer to Gabriel. “Do you know what time it is?” she asked.

“No,” he whispered softly.

Gabriel’s voice cut through the darkness on butterfly wings: “She’s your sister?”

“Yes,” Hélène whispered back. “We had to leave our other sister behind, though. Half-sister, actually. Madeleine.

She’s protected. She’s not half-Jewish, like us.”

“Tell me about her,” he said simply.

And so she did. She told him about how Madeleine was willowy, with auburn hair that burnt down her back, how she would often wear it in a braid with a ribbon. How the tail of her braid used to curl up at the ends. How she would sit for hours when Hélène and Delphine were small, letting them create atrocious hairstyles with her hair. She told him that Madeleine was reserved, but witty once you got to know her. Much like herself. That she was vibrant, but already wilting when they said goodbye. Hélène cleared her throat to continue; how on the night they left, Madeleine stood in the garden and held them close, kissing their hair like she had when they were younger. She wore a sad smile like a sash and waved. But down the lane, Hélène looked back and saw her hunched on the garden bench, like a widow. And Hélène felt a surge of something terrible.

That would be the last time she’d ever see her, she thought, the older sister who might not be strong enough.

OPENING CHAPTER FROM GEORGIA BRUCATO ’22’S NOVEL SOMETHING OLD, NEW, AND FORGOTTEN Present Day: London, UK I look around my perfectly groomed garden as I sit on the deck chair that Henry built for me: it’s quite a lovely day, seeing as though we don’t get many of those in London, especially this time of the year. The sun pokes out from its hiding spot behind a cloud, welcoming me to a new morning, a new beginning perhaps. Fitting…seeing as though it is my wedding day, after all… oh what a bittersweet feeling. The breeze catches and swallows me in its warm arms for a brief moment. I sip on my lukewarm coffee, pushing off time, as I hear the noisy bustle of my mother and friends running around the house preparing for the long and dreadful day ahead.

Back to reality, I think to myself.

I push myself off of the deck chair with effort, I must add, that I had so comfortably perched myself in, and wander back into the chaos of the kitchen. Pots and pans are everywhere.

Dried eggs are stuck to the pans and coffee mugs are still half full in the sink. Ugh, what a mess I’ll be left to deal with per usual. Henry most definitely will not be happy with me.

You should clean up,” he laughs, “And you didn’t tell me you were wearing that dress… I liked the other one much better.”

After noticing my expression he adds, “You still look lovely though!”

As I step away from his embrace, the necklace slips out of my clammy hands and onto the hardwood floor, pearls breaking off the string.

“I’m sorry. I promise I’ll be ready soon, just let me clean up this mess,” I say, holding in the tears that threaten to burst.

Henry walks to the door, “Ok, just please be ready soon. My parents are flipping out… they’ve been waiting for you for nearly two hours now.”

As I hear the door close behind him and his footsteps walk away, I think to myself. Why do I feel this way? Shouldn’t I be happier?

I bend over to pick up the pearls and am almost done when I notice that one has slipped into that crack in the wood floor where someone has turned up the corner of white carpet. I force my fingers in to raise the loose plank of wooden floor, and that’s when I see it… for the first time in years. The box of letters that he wrote me ages ago. Oh, I was so young… so in love.

“Isla, my dear, you haven’t even changed yet?” My mother laments as she notices me still comfortably wearing my pajama set. “You look like death. Come here and have some tea, my love, and we will start on your makeup…God knows you need it…oh my! Look at those under eyes, just horrific!”

Once makeup and hair are done and I drink the three herbal teas my mother forces down my throat, claiming they will give me some sort of superpower, I go to my room and put on the lacey white dress embroidered with silk flowers and the dainty gold jewelry. I turn to close my bedroom door as the first teardrop begins to gradually fall down my caked face of foundation, a couple of shades darker than my skin.

I can’t even cry… all my makeup will come off. Mother will have an absolute fit!

I hadn’t known how truly dreadful this day would be. But it’s time. I’ve put it off as long as possible. We’ve been engaged for over four years. I must get over my memories.

I wipe my tears with the back of my hand and open my jewelry box on the bedstand reaching for Great Grandmother’s beautiful pearl necklace.

The door opens forcefully and a voice shouts, “Isla dear, your mother just notified me that you haven’t even changed yet!

What could you possibly be doing?” Henry barges through the door, raising his voice as he nears me.

That’s when he notices the tears.

“Wow! You have most definitely seen better days, my dear.

ALUMNA SPOTLIGHT

Meghan Carroll McMahon ’00 In the fall, Meghan Carroll McMahon ’00 began her ninth year as Principal of Urban Assembly School for the Performing Arts (UASPA). A high school in Harlem, N.Y., UASPA draws 300 students from all five boroughs of New York City. The school’s enrollment is open to all students who have a serious interest in the performing arts, an aspect of the mission that deeply resonated with McMahon from the very beginning.

“The reason I was drawn to UASPA is that it is a small public performing arts school founded on the idea that all students should have access to a rigorous academic and artistic curriculum, regardless of prior experience or access,” said McMahon. “As such, we do not screen, test, or audition any of our students. We aim to sustain a college and career preparatory curriculum that infuses the performing arts into all areas of academics.”

A committed classical dancer while at NCDS, McMahon remembers the tremendous psychological and emotional benefits of an environment that promoted artistic expression along with intellectual engagement. “I see the arts as a transformative means of tapping into expression, creativity, confidence-building, and self awareness — all elemental to the building of community,” she noted.

McMahon completed her undergraduate studies at the College of the Holy Cross, where the Jesuit theme of accompaniment is culturally ubiquitous. McMahon knows that valuing each person’s lived experience is a building block of community. “As a white woman, leading a school with a very diverse staff and 100% Black and Hispanic or Latinx students, I am aware that my racial identity is not reflective of our school community, and therefore it is essential that decisions are made with the input of all stakeholders (students, faculty, families, community) and never on my own,” she said.

“My own identity and background can play a role in my own biases and lens for decision making. I believe deeply in the power of diversity and collaborative decision making.”

In between earning her Master’s degree at Tufts University and moving to New York City, McMahon returned to NCDS to teach social studies and dance for one year in the Middle School. “In my teaching year at NCDS, I was so fortunate to teach alongside Mrs. Berkman and Mrs. Hassinger, who both had a major influence on me,” said McMahon. “As a new teacher at NCDS, I was provided invaluable lessons about writing authentic, engaging, and rigorous curriculum and observing strong pedagogy.”

Mission-oriented and naturally relational, McMahon has been committed to UASPA since its inception in 2006. She was the very first hire made by founding principal Fia Davis. “Fia hired me as the founding Social Studies and Dance teacher in 2006,” explained McMahon “She mentored me as a new teacher, and I became the Assistant Principal in 2010. I took over for her in 2014 when she moved onto another principalship and later became a Superintendent in New York City’s Department of Education.”

Reflecting on why she found a home at UASPA, McMahon said, “I have always been drawn to Sacred Heart Goal III. NCDS, and my family, fostered in me a social awareness which impels to action. I recognize the stark difference and inequities that exist among various types of educational settings and opportunities. The reality is that we have the power to change these injustices!”

The motto of UASPA is “Education Equals Options.” Accelerating the emancipatory power of education is a theme for many NCDS alumnae in the education industry, and one that McMahon clearly keeps at the heart of her pedagogy, noting, “Education is a powerful tool one can use to carve for herself a brand new path.”

Over 200 years ago in a small Parisian suburb, in a country on the cusp of revolution, a young girl imagined for herself a life where she would be free.

Society of the Sacred Heart foundress Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat was educated in secret by her brother because “Education Equals Options,” to quote UASPA’s motto. McMahon is not surprised that her alma mater and the school she leads are founded on similar ethos. McMahon recalled that she first read Nelson Mandela’s Long Walk to Freedom in an NCDS History seminar on the leader, who wrote “education is the great engine of personal development.” Of the class, McMahon said “It transformed me.”

Traditionally, UASPA’s graduation ceremony includes the singing of “The Star-Spangled Banner” by a rising senior.

In 2020, after the killing of George Floyd, and with emphatic support from classmates, Liana Morales — the selected rising senior — requested that the school instead approve “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing,” known as the Black national anthem. McMahon and her staff, including the school’s Race Equity Team, supported and approved the change, as was reported in the Wall Street Journal in June 2020.

The news-making program change was of course not the only pivot the school made that year. At that time the epicenter of the United States’ COVID-19 outbreak, New York City bore the terrifying brunt of the pandemic’s first wave of mass illness and casualties. McMahon recalls that time with reverence, “There was a lot of personal loss among our faculty, staff, and students.

Many people lost family members.”

Amid the devastating sadness and the persisting unknowns, McMahon and her staff had to somehow shift their performing arts school to a remote module almost overnight. “One Friday we had a pajama day on campus and then by Sunday night the governor had closed the schools,” McMahon recalls. “We took the next week to obtain Zoom accounts and learn how to use them; to open Google Classroom accounts for each student and learn how to use them; to gather contact information, create schedules, empty all of our computer carts and partner with organizations to mail technology to our students. The work was endless, but we did it.”

That time is simultaneously a blur and an imprint in McMahon’s mind.

From that new beginning, McMahon developed a theme of sorts for the “unprecedented” times: extend grace.

“We realized that on different days people would be in different spaces — in their minds, in their hearts. The idea of extending grace was paramount to us as educators and as people.”

McMahon and her team spent countless hours recording instructional lessons and prioritized live time for “check-ins” to help preserve social and emotional wellbeing. “The one regular, daily live class that remained completely unchanged in the schedule was Advisory. It was too important to alter or omit.”

By the fall of 2020, students had the option of attending UASPA in-person or remotely. 75% of the enrollment chose to remain remote. Critical masses of faculty and staff obtained medical accommodation status, meaning that they would also be teaching and working remotely. “For months we sustained an exhausting hybrid model where some students and teachers were in person, and many were remote,” McMahon explained. “An in-person student could sit in a classroom taught by a remote teacher, joined by peers who were also in the classroom and others via Zoom.”

A dizzying time, devoid of the anchoring nature of personal contact, the hybrid class year finally came to an end, and in the fall of 2021 McMahon was able to open her school for full in-person attendance. With this return came a multitude of feelings. “There was a lot of anxiety afoot last year. With so much loss in our community, people were understandably nervous about coming back. Added to that was the unavoidable learning loss we had to address.”

Preternaturally organized, McMahon decided to get some metrics on her side. To measure the academic loss, she administered assessments to all students, the results of which formed the basis of very specific interventions. “In the process of coming back together, we wanted to continue to extend grace, but we also needed to resume academic and classroom expectations and ensure that solid learning was happening,” said McMahon. “We created a variety of interventions, from traditional literacy periods to small group instruction and even one on one time.”

With the newest of academic years now solidly underway, McMahon can perhaps begin to reflect on the challenges of the pandemic era of education. But McMahon is not the looking-back type. “We are thinking forward about how to refine the curriculum in a way that personally engages each and every student,” she said.

“It is so important for students to see themselves in the curriculum, because then they will ask the deeper question, which leads to yet another question. Then we are off and running, building and feeding intellectual curiosity.”

ALUMNA SPOTLIGHT

Pherooz Karani ’91 The International Montessori School of Prague (IMSP) includes in its mission statement a commitment to empowering students to become “confident, compassionate and engaged citizens of the world.” If this confidence-forward, globally minded mission language is familiar, it is not a coincidence. IMPS Head of School Pherooz Karani ’91 has been at the helm of her school for a dozen years, leading her community through tremendous growth while reflecting and drawing on her NCDS experience.

“I have NCDS to thank for the work I do now. My Hesed program opened my eyes to working with children,” said Karani. “For Hesed, I worked in a women’s shelter and spent a lot of time with the children. I felt like I was doing something very useful and meaningful. Sister Nelson in particular was a firecracker who opened my eyes to so much injustice in this world. She had such a central role in making me the activist that I am today. She introduced me to Howard Zinn, and it’s been non stop since then!”

Karani draws on all of her NCDS role models as she leads her school in Prague. “[Mrs. Mignone]! She was forever a role model for compassion and gentleness and I think about that a lot when I’m trying to balance being firm and clear but also being understanding.”

Karani’s path in teaching and school administration has taken her from Boston to New York, London, Florida, and now to Prague, the European country that sustained the most COVID-related school closings over the past two years.

“Switching to remote learning in an environment where so much of our pedagogical approach is hands-on and small group activities presented unique challenges,” said Karani. “[With toddlers and young children in the program], the struggle was significant. We were not in the position to refund families because we value our faculty, and we need to pay them.”

Karani knows exactly what it means to be on faculty at a Montessori school, as she was at Montessori Educare School in Newton for over 10 years. “Working with 25 three to six year old children was exhausting, and by 2005 I was feeling rather burnt out,” she explained. “My head of school offered me a position as her assistant, and she deeply involved me on the administrative side of things. I fell in love with the work.

I loved bringing order to things and engaging in long-term planning. I felt like I was still serving children in a meaningful way, which is my purpose and passion in life.

After that year, the school offered me a job as Director of Admissions.”

Karani’s move to admissions in 2010 proved helpful later in her career.“The first eight years at IMPS I was really driving admissions and placement along with my Head of School duties,” she said. Part of stabilizing the enrollment was crystallizing the mission of the school. An English-language, international Montessori school, IMPS had the benefit of offering much, but it lacked a focal mission, which Karani knew would ground the institution. “When I came on, we began our transition from being known primarily as an international, or English-language school, into a specifically Montessori school.”

Karani engaged an entrepreneurial spirit within herself, rallied colleagues, built coalitions, and began the work of rebranding, along with re-educating the current students and prospects.

With characteristic humility, Karani explained, “Don’t misunderstand — I wasn’t some savior who came in and changed our school single-handedly — we all did it together. It was hard, and we lost some community members along the way, but in six years we doubled the size of our enrollment.”

With a clearer identity, strong enrollment, and committed faculty, the now-steady IMPS ship sailed into the COVID-19 storm head-on. “This may sound crazy, but we were kind of prepared for it,” recalled Karani. “I remember in January 2020 reading something in the news about the virus and it made me nervous. At our next faculty meeting, days after reading that piece, I asked our teachers to start thinking about remote learning for our students. So when we got our first school closure, we pivoted to remote learning the very next day.”

Remote learning in an early educational setting presents its own set of challenges.

Karani noted that while they were quick to offer online learning, the process of refining those offerings was on-going.

“We figured out what didn’t work and what did work. We even had closures last fall, and by then we were a well-oiled machine. That said, it was never easy or smooth, and all children suffer through remote learning.”

For Karani and her staff, of the many missing connections caused by COVID, some of the hardest were losing the day to day interactions with the children in school. In fact, Karani had developed a practice of engaging with students as much as possible, despite her administrative identity. “The only way to combat missing the kids in the classroom was to intentionally develop relationships with students. I learned that from Sister Rogers,” Karani explained. “One of the things I appreciated most about her is

that she always greeted us by name and would stop to ask us questions about what we were doing and what we were interested in. That is a model for me as Head of School, and I did not have that experience in any of my previous schools, or even at university. Her model behavior has stuck with me all this time.”

Karani hoped to return to more day to day contact with students as the new school year gets underway. Coming together for in-person learning for the first time since closures last year, Karani and her colleagues noticed that many young students had to be reacclimated to classroom expectations. “We are focused on the whole child and have social, emotional, and moral expectations; those skills were rusty. There was a lot of petty fighting because the kids forgot how to be respectful. In first grade and older, we were teaching a lot of conflict resolution.”

Eternally optimistic, Karani believes there may be a silver lining to COVID when it comes to distilling the values of early education. “At the beginning of COVID, it felt like people were talking about childrens’ social and emotional development. I hope we continue to look at children for their whole being. I think this is especially true in America, where we are often so focused on academics and test scores.

The heart of the matter is the child, and children are the hope for the future.

It’s up to us to nurture the tremendous potential of each one.”

As Karani planned for a new school year, she anticipated more of what a return to in-person learning brought this past year: joy. “In-person learning and events catalyzed so much joy,” she said Très Bien Magazine 45

Elizabeth White ’09 Public health as an applied science is animated by a commitment to service. The former cannot exist without the latter. “Scientists who serve” could be an apt motto for these individuals, one of whom is Elizabeth (Lizzie) White ’09. Currently in the first of a two-year fellowship at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), White is an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer. Her path to epidemiology and her passion for service came together throughout her educational experiences.

“I’ve always loved science, but I knew I didn’t want to do bench science,” reflected White. “I wasn’t particularly interested in medical school. Years before the pandemic, I realized that epidemiology and public health would be my path.”

White spent time in Central America while in college at Washington University in St. Louis. “I majored in biology and minored in public health. The service I engaged in while in Honduras helped convince me that I wanted to go into public health as a career,” said White. “I volunteered with a sustainable development organization. We helped build public health infrastructure in families’ homes (cement floors, eco-friendly stoves, latrines, and wash stations) and provided health education for school-aged children. My experiences in Honduras were my first exposure to global health work, and the most important lesson I carry with me to this day is the importance of partnerships.”

As if putting an exclamation point on the discernment process that goes into finding a career, White spent her first year after college in Jacksonville, Fla. volunteering with AmeriCorps. She worked at a YMCA doing community outreach and health education, serving mostly senior citizens. In Honduras and in AmeriCorps, White learned the value of collaboration. “It’s essential to value local knowledge and ensure that community members are involved in all stages of any program or research project,” explained White.

In March 2020, White approached the conclusion of her PhD program at Yale University School of Medicine, where she studied the Epidemiology of Microbial diseases. When the COVID-19 pandemic suddenly prohibited in-person learning, White had mostly entered the independent research phase of her studies.

“On one hand, I was lucky in the sense that I had passed all of the academic requirements that remote learning hindered,” she said. “However it was also extremely difficult, because my research depended on my return to Uganda, and that important trip was delayed for almost two years.”

Drawn to the front lines of applied science, White is comfortable in the “weeds” of a public health situation, motivated by a desire to help scale best practices in order to have a bigger impact on society. “The subject of my dissertation was tuberculosis (TB) in Uganda and how patient and health system traits affect the quality of TB care,” explained White.

Extraordinarily data-driven, White quantified the impact of interventions on patient outcomes, analyzed and evaluated data systems in order to improve them. “I loved working in Uganda,” she said. “When I was finally able to return for my third trip in 2021, I partnered with Ugandan social scientists there, and we visited clinics in the Kampala area, meeting with their directors and staff. We learned so much

about how they managed their data and where the challenges were in their processes,” recalled White.

White stayed in Uganda for two months working on her dissertation.

She also took herself on a few field trips. “We have three Sacred Heart Schools in Uganda,” White noted, “and I was thrilled to visit each one.” White spent a lot of time at the Kangole Girls’ Senior Secondary School in Moroto.

“I volunteered at Kangole Girls’ for two weeks and got really involved in the Science Club. I made a connection with a student who was about to compete in the national science fair, and that was incredibly special and motivational to me.”

Recently assigned to CDC’s Influenza Division at its Atlanta, Georgia headquarters, White will engage in data-driven projects about vaccine effectiveness, novel flu surveillance, and international work. Referencing the emergence and reemergence of monkeypox and polio, White knows that CDC will deploy its officers to address these and other public health threats — a challenge for which she is ready. “CDC is always reminding us of its pledge to the American people. That really resonates with me.”

White needn’t seek out a Sacred Heart School in order to reconnect with the Society’s Goals. The Sacred Heart mission is something she carries with her.

“I will never forget reading Mountains Beyond Mountains for the first time in 11th grade religion class,” recalled White. “The book is about Partners in Health founder Dr. Paul Farmer, and it was my first exposure to public health in the context of service, which was incredibly inspiring to me.” The public health-service seed was well planted in 11th grade, and White’s academic achievement and contributions to her communities continue to grow.

White feels at home in a professional community that runs into the burning buildings of global health crises. “When COVID unfolded in the United States, everyone in my epidemiology world just sprang into action,” she recalled.

“Whether it was launching public health responses or accelerating research, the call to action did not go unanswered.”

Perfectly suited to her CDC fellowship, White is part of a highly selective training program called the Epidemic Intelligence Service — a training ground for post doctoral students drawn to front lines of applied epidemiology.

Reunion 2022 Reunion 2022 was held on Saturday, May 7. After two years of connecting virtually, it was a particular joy to welcome 11 classes back to campus to reminisce and celebrate. During the Reunion reception, alumnae toured the school, pausing at rooms that have over the years served as places of learning, counsel, reflection, and slumber. Members of the Classes of 1971 and 1972 joined together for a 50th-year celebration, recounting the stories and traditions of Sacred Heart life.

Current and former teachers spanning all reunion classes celebrated this community of rigorous intellect, compassion, and joyful traditions.

“It was such a treat to attend our 50th/51st Reunion,” said Joannie Jaxtimer ’71. “Being on campus, after a number of years, brought with it a flood of lovely memories. It was so special to reacquaint myself with our beautiful building and grounds, and gathering with a small group of classmates was a wonderful and joyous occasion.”

Events Young Alumnae and Parents Goûter On June 1st, Newton Country Day welcomed back members from the Classes of 2019, 2020 and 2021 and their parents for a goûter.

Abby Coburn ’20 worked with the Development Office to reunite the alumnae and parents on campus after a long absence.

Cape Cod On Thursday, August 4, Former Trustee and past parent Nancy Gibson and her husband Craig Gibson P’06’16 graciously opened their home in Woods Hole, Mass. for a reception. There is not much news from the Class of 1951.

I (Penny Kickham Reilly) guess no news at this time of our lives is not so bad. I did talk to Addie O’Keefe McMurrer last fall, and she was the same.

Plans to see Betty Curtin Crowley in Scituate did not happen, but she is a busy lady. Peggy Knapp Galvin, who lived away from the Northeast for years, died recently and was buried in Scituate with Betty singing at her funeral. It is a small world! Our Class President, Bea Sullivan McDevitt, is still in New Hampshire but has moved to a Senior Living Facility.

Her family is near, so all is well.

Elia Capone Marnik writes, “In October, I attended the Voice of the Faithful gathering, to hear one of VOTF’s best friend and colleague, Guest Speaker, Prof. Thomas H. Groome, Ed.D., discuss Putting Jesus at the Heart of Keeping the Faith and Changing Church.

It was an opportunity to see old friends and meet new ones, to share stories of our experiences over the past two decades.”

Spoke with Sheila Maloney, and all is well with her. She sees Maureen Cortelli Sheehan and Mary Chisolm Sullivan. Maureen and her husband Jerry live in Duxbury, Mass. Mary lives in Falmouth, surrounded by her very large family with two new great grandchildren She is as active as ever. I am the same. Miss old friends and family but cherish two new ones, great grandchildren Thamas and Jack, with another boy due in September. Stay well and all the best.

Class of 1958 Carolyn Slocum writes, “Just returned from Israel and Jordan. So nice to travel again. Busy catching up with family — four children, nine grandchildren and two great grandsons. They are spread all over the US and Europe. Life is good in Carefree, AZ. Hope to make our next reunion.”

Class of 1963 Connie Murphy Hughes writes, “So happy to be getting back to seeing some friends after these past couple of years. We go to every game that our grandchildren play unless it is out of state. There are now six of them and the older ones are at Holy Cross, Boston College, two in high school, and one in middle school, and this year we added my son’s baby. It keeps us busy.”

Class of 1966 Sue Costello Bryan writes, “Last year was a tough year, due to losing Chris Sweetser and Sr. Mary Davin. Hopefully everyone is doing well despite these ‘medically strange times.’ Carl and I have settled into living in Manchester, Vermont about 10 minutes from our son Reid, his wife Kim and their two wonderful daughters Willa (17) and Nell (15). Both girls play Varsity Soccer, so we see a great many games! During the winter we ski and work on the house. Through Carl’s architecture training, we have taken down walls, moved a stairway and completely redone the kitchen family room spaces. During the warmer months, we play golf and fly fish in the beautiful rivers and streams that are in abundance here. Retirement is great, but I still truly miss being part of a school.”

Constance (Connie) White Arnold writes, “I graduated with a terrific class of girls, many of whom became lifelong friends. I’m an avid gardener, and because of my obsession with flowers, I became a floral designer. My current passion is pastel painting! My husband and I are in the cranberry growing business in Carver, and we are a part of the Ocean Spray Co-op. Those who love cranberry juice may just be drinking juice made with some of our very own berries! I lost my beautiful wonderful brother, Justin, who was just 61, to ALS in May. He was a prince and lived his last year since diagnosis without a complaint but with great dignity, sweetness and strength. Wishing everyone happiness and good health!”

Paola Tocci writes, “My big and exciting news is that I have attained dual citizenship with Italy, along with my son, Peter. My daughter Piera will soon apply.

It was a very hard, long process, but it was also transformative for me. I lived in Sicily for 10 months, having never been there before. My family is not from there either, so it was a real adventure!

The lawyers who were handling this for me mentioned Sicily would be an easier, faster place to obtain citizenship. Faster than the USA, yes; easier, no. All in all it was an unforgettable experience. So I am now onto a new chapter in my life.”

Class of 1971 Joanne Jaxtimer writes, “This has been a year of moves, milestones, and magical moments! We sold our home of 25 years and moved to a condo (which we would highly recommend). Took two cycling trips — one along the Maryland Shore followed by a more ambitious ride through Bryce Canyon and Zion — great fun. Attended our 50th/51st class reunion celebration with a small group of classmates — a wonderful and joyous occasion. Finally realized a long-planned trip to Ecuador, where we celebrated our 36th anniversary and our son Michael’s 28th birthday — absolutely magical. In addition to a visit to the Galápagos Islands that far exceeded our wildest imaginations for their beauty, we reconnected with the foster family who cared for our son while we were processing his adoption. We were so moved by their genuine love and embrace and delighted that Michael could experience his Ecuadorian roots and know another Mamita, Papito and sister Mia. So many blessings!”

Class of 1982 Ana Adela Chavez writes, “Hello everyone. I tried to get my visa on time to be able to be there with you all.

Unfortunately, it appears that either it was lost somewhere between Washington, D.C. and Mexico City, or it will not be renewed for whatever reason. Sorry! I will be thinking of you all and reminiscing about old times and adventures.”

Class of 1985 Laurie Sullivan O’Rourke and her husband Bill retired from their many years of teaching and have moved to Hobe Sound, Florida. They love the warm weather and relaxed lifestyle.

Cynthia Recchia Graff’s husband Jeff retired as a Lieutenant of the Revere Police Department. Cynthia and her sister Julia Recchia Bisconti ’88 continue to run Claremont Insurance Agency, but Cynthia is looking forward to enjoying her husband’s retirement.

Cynthia and Laurie met up at Marco Island in May to celebrate Cynthia’s 26th wedding anniversary.

Class of 1987 Heidi Ross Bouchard writes, “This is my 25th year teaching in Vermont public schools. I enjoy my current position as a middle school special educator. Teaching students through the pandemic has allowed for much needed innovation in our schools. I have begun leading educational travel trips for high school students as a way to show my daughters Europe. My oldest daughter now accompanies me on the trips as a chaperone!”

In honor of Melissa Hirshson’s 25th anniversary as handbell director at Christ Church Cambridge, an anthem was commissioned for her. Come hear the world premiere in the fall! She also just celebrated her 15th anniversary at Zoll Medical, Chelmsford, as a technical writer.

Libby Kavanagh Berke is back living in Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico. She had a great visit from Tracey Geran Honan and her husband Matt in November.

Hello from the Class of 1988! We have a few updates to report, including news from world travelers, a proud mom, and a hometown hero!

Renata Merino lives in Chicago with her two children, ages 13 and 15. Over the past four years she has transitioned from serial entrepreneur to venture capital investor. She has been advising founders and working with various venture funds and accelerators. She has run a female founder community, Blazin’ Babes, over the past seven years, helping women launch and scale startups and plans to launch nationally.

She recently launched a video podcast called “True North,” focused on overcoming adversity and pursuing our purpose and plans to enter the speaking circuit as a national speaker.

She is currently writing a book.

Kelly Murphy graduated from Columbia University with a Master’s of Business Administration in 2022.

Suzanne Rheault Stewart is excited to report that her daughter Lexi will be attending MIT (just like her mom!) in the fall and her son just got elected student body president of Montgomery Bell Academy. Suzanne writes, “Other than kid news, Ken and I got invited to attend yacht week in Croatia in July. If anyone is traveling to Nashville, be sure to contact me.”

Shannon Holmes Donahue has been an elementary school nurse for nine years and was named a “Hometown Hero” for her work during the pandemic. Shannon states, “It has been rough, so this was an honor that I am quite proud of.” Shannon, thanks for all you do!!

Liz Devin West recently accepted a position as Vice President, Head of Channel Marketing for MissionSquare Retirement in Washington, D.C. And for all our classmates currently serving in their local governments, health advocacy roles, or on the front lines during this pandemic (teachers, nurses, first responders), please know that the Class of 1988 is praying for you and grateful for all you have done.

Class of 2001 After living in Brooklyn, NY, for many years, Ndidi Menkiti and her husband, Jenard, are moving to Washington, D.C. with their two kids, Nnamdi (3) and Ngozi (11 months). Ndidi will continue to practice labor and employment law for the United States Department of Labor. They welcome visitors and are excited to finally have space to host!

After two stints in Europe, Amanda Russo moved back to the United States and is living in Washington, DC. She ran Media Content for the World Economic Forum, advising CEOs, heads of state, and policymakers. Now, she is the Director of Communications at the Crypto Council for Innovation and helping leaders navigate innovation, regulation and choppy international markets.

Class of 2004 Kate Herlihy writes, “I was thrilled to project manage the U.S. Pavilion at the 59th Venice Biennale this year.

Working with the ICA/Boston and artist Simone Leigh to realize her visionary installation in Venice was a career highlight. I am looking forward to starting as Director of Exhibition at the ICA/Boston in June 2022.”

Class of 1989 In September 2022, Christa Kelleher marked 15 years at UMass Boston’s Center for Women in Politics and Public Policy as the Research and Policy Director, with current projects focused on early care and education policy analysis and municipal initiatives related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism. She looks forward to serving as a lay minister at First Parish Unitarian Universalist of Arlington Massachusetts in the fall.

Class of 2005 Meaghan Doherty Myers writes, “My family is stationed in Riga, Latvia from 2021–2024 (my husband is active-duty military), and I recently became the first breast milk donor here in the country. During the pandemic, after my first daughter was born, I started donating breast milk to help support premature babies, and it became a bit of a passion project of mine. Very best to you and all the NCDS family from Eastern Europe.”

Class of 2006 Catherine Sullivan writes, “I am the Assistant Director of the Natick Community Organic Farm. Please come visit! We are a working farm, open to the public 365 days a year and offer yearround youth programming focused on agriculture and livestock. In addition to serving 25,000+ visitors per year from 25+ Massachusetts communities, we have veggie, meat, and flower CSAs, and a bustling seasonal market stand. Class of 2009 Keiani Gomes writes, “Proud to say I finished my Master’s Degree in Occupational Therapy at Salem State University in August 2021 and passed my NBCOT certification exam in May 2022. Working for Baycove early intervention. Thanks for preparing me for my future, NCDS.”

Class of 2010 Nicky Hatton Nickerson and Tessa Pulaski ran the 2022 Boston Marathon. Tessa fundraised and ran on behalf of the Multiple Myeloma Foundation in memory of her aunt Daria Donnelly. Nicky fundraised and ran on behalf of Samaritans Boston in memory of her father, Gary Hatton.

Together they raised over $60,000!

Alessia Hughes writes, “In February 2022, I self-published a collection of poetry entitled Falling Out of Love through Amazon. The book consists of 80 poems, some of which were written while I was a student at NCDS in Creative Writing classes.”

Class of 2013 Elizabeth Greene earned her J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. She will begin her legal career in the Corporate Group of Simpson, Thacher & Bartlett’s New York office.

Kate Kimball moved from Boston to Los Angeles in October 2021.

NEW BOARD MEMBERS Christopher Busby P’23’26’29 Christopher Busby P’23’26’29 is a Managing Director at Great Hill Partners. He joined Great Hill in 2000. Previously he was an analyst in the Investment Banking Division of JP Morgan and an associate at GCC Investments.

Busby earned his BA from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He has served on a variety of for-profit boards with a specific focus on software investments, as well as non-profit boards such as Learning Prep School.

He and his wife Rachel live with their three daughters in Needham, Mass.

Peter Folan P’27 Dr. Peter Folan P’27 has been President of Catholic Memorial School since 2014. Previously, he was an administrator and lecturer at Boston College for six years and worked as an administrator, teacher, and coach at Belmont Hill School for seven years. Folan also teaches in Merrimack College’s Catholic School Leadership program. He earned his undergraduate degree in English and his Master’s degree in Education from Boston College, a Doctorate in Higher Education Management from UPenn, and a certificate in strategic perspectives in nonprofit management from Harvard Business School. Folan serves as a Trustee of the Fessenden School and is a Corporator of Cambridge Savings Bank. He and his wife Karlyn live in Belmont with their two children and golden retriever.

Dear Alumnae, Parents, and Friends, On behalf of my fellow Trustees, thank you for your generosity to the School and for entrusting your daughters to us. It is our hope that each girl feels the great love that we and God have for her. As an alumna of Newton Country Day School, I know that the Goals build a strong foundation in each and every student. Our mission is empowering and enduring!

We are pleased to report that your remarkable commitment to the School raised more than $1.8M for the Annual Fund, including $600K from the Très Bien Auction. We congratulate our families from the Class of 2022 who contributed $275K to the Senior Family Fund.

We are grateful for the blessings that abound in our community: the devotion of parents and alumnae; the outstanding work of talented teachers and staff; and the curiosity of our students. Our community continues to flourish through the efforts of all its members.

Sustaining the School’s excellence for future generations of promising girls remains our driving goal. It is almost unbelievable that our little girls are now women in college. For all of us, our homes and daily rituals will change, whether you are less one child or now an empty nester. One thing is certain, NCDS has provided an excellent foundation of courage and confidence for our daughters to take along to college and beyond.

Though their high school experience was interrupted and challenged at times, the faculty and staff did an amazing job keeping the girls in the classroom as much as possible. The Class of 2022 leaves behind a quieter area for events, classes, study groups and conferences, with the gift of a new glass enclosure for the Blue Room.

— St. Madeleine Sophie Barat In 1880, the leadership of St. Madeleine Sophie Barat and the pioneering spirit of St. Rose Philippine Duchesne touched Boston and its surrounding communities with the dedication of a new Sacred Heart School, the 20th to be opened in the United States. The inaugural class of eight girls were the fortunate beneficiaries of Philippine’s bold vision of bringing Sacred Heart education to the New World.

Today, Newton Country Day School continues to prepare young women to lead lives of courage and confidence by enabling them to respond generously, competently, and responsibly to the demands of their lives and to the needs of others in their communities and across the globe.

The Founders’ Society of Newton Country Day School was established to acknowledge individuals who share Philippine’s spirit and vision for the future. TRÈS BIEN AUCTION Congratulations to the 2022 Très Bien Auction Co-Chairs Amy MacDougall P’24, Julie Mulvey P’23,’19, and Grace White P’24, as well as our many volunteers. They celebrated the tradition of “Blue Silver” on Saturday, March 5 in Newton Country Day’s Kathleen R. Martin Center. Guests were dazzled as they entered the space that had been transformed into an enchanting blue and silver wonderland envisioned by the talented and creative leadership team.

The committee embraced Goal IV, the building of community, throughout the planning for this annual event. The spirit of community radiated throughout the room as parents renewed friendships and made new ones. It was a wonderful representation of Goal IV in action!

The Silent Auction offered a wine pull and exciting raffles in addition to an incredible selection of items: tickets for sporting events at Boston’s iconic Fenway Park, Beach Cruisers, outdoor games and, believe it or not, a classic telephone booth, to name a few. The Live Auction included concert tickets, a progressive dinner and dancing at South Boston’s premier restaurants and nightclub, one of a kind faculty art, exotic vacations to Greece’s romantic Mykonos and Brazil’s magical island of Florianopolis.

An energetic crowd actively bid on the most sought-after items of the evening — US Open tickets hosted this year at The Country Club in Brookline.

The School was blessed to have alumnae Elizabeth Gallagher ’99 and Sophia Gaines ’20 address the community about their experience as students and the importance of supporting our school so that an excellent Sacred Heart education is offered to future generations. This year’s Funda-Need raised $150,000, which will provide tuition assistance for deserving young girls. The Très Bien Auction was a huge success, raising more than $450,000.
