Christian author gives presentation D r. P a u l Maier, second vice president of the Luthera n Chu rchMissouri Synod, former profe s sor of ancient history at Western Michigan UniPaul versity and auMaier thor, visited Chaska last weekend. Maier gave presentations on how Christianity compares to other world religions. Maier said he wanted to show Christians “how beautifully grounded their own faith is.” Besides preaching at St. John’s, Maier also spoke to students at Mayer Lutheran High School. He said one of the questions he received was “What if someone attacks this

particular belief, how do you answer?” Maier was invited by St. John’s Lutheran Church par i shioner Nat h a n Mes s er. Messer is a new member of the Lutheran Laymen’s League, and said he arranged Maier’s visit to help renew local interest in the organization. Maier is the author of 18 nonfiction and historical fiction books on Christian topics, including “Skeleton in God’s Closet,” a religious fiction bestseller now in its 24th printing. His latest book, “The Constantine Codex,” was published this year.

The Ebenezer church has invited The River Church to join them, according to a press release from Pastor Rob Mapstone. The River Church had met at the Chaska Rex Cinema on Walnut Street for the past two years. The River will conduct its worship service at 9:30 a.m. and Ebenezer wi l l meet at 11:30 a.m., according to Mapstone. Noe Lara is pastor at Ebenezer.

ministry experience, according to a Westbrook press release. A core group of about 100 members met for several months leading up to the September launch. “By receiving all that God wants to give us, and giving his blessings away, we will create a caring community where all can belong, become like Christ and be a blessing to the world,” states the Westbrook vision. “This mission stays true to the concept that people are the church; a community of people living life connected to each other, sharing in relationships, serving those in need and encouraging each other to love God. Having a specific church building is not necessary in order for a church to be born because a church plant brings people together with a common goal,” the Westbrook press release stated. “Westbrook recognized early on, there are many strong churches in the Chaska area,

and wanted to be careful that Westbrook is not seen as competition to them. Instead, the church wants to collaborate and meet the needs of the community – spiritually and practically; like partnering with local organizations, such as Love INC. It is Westbrook’s primary goal to reach people who do not yet have a church home,” the release stated. Besides church services, its programs will include a children and youth ministry and community outreach. The church, will ultimately operate independently, but is now being aided by Westwood Community Church in Chanhassen, which in turn had been founded 16 years ago by Wooddale Church of Eden Prairie. Westbrook will hold Sunday services at Clover Ridge, 114000 Hundertmark Road, at 9:15 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. For more info, call (952) 856-2298 or visit www. westbrookonline.org.

Area native Pfc. Aaron Rasmussen, 22, earned the title “U.S. Marine” upon graduating from Marine Corps recruit training in San Diego on Aug. 12, 2011. Rasmussen faced the physically and mentally rigorous challenges, packed into the 13 weeks of Marine Corps boot camp. The training was designed to enhance raw talent and to create the morale and discipline required of all Marines. During recruit training, Rasmussen joined others from across the country to undertake the quest to be among the world’s military elite. He learned timehonored military customs and courtesies and mastered closeorder drill. The demanding physical fitness regimen placed Rasmussen in the best shape of his life. The training honed vital military skills such as marksmanship, first-aid, martial arts and leadership. Following approximately 10 days of leave, Rasmussen will attend school to learn his occupational specialty. Then Rasmussen will report to his fi rst duty station to gain further knowledge and experience serving with a Marine Corps unit. Rasmussen is a 2008 graduate of Chaska High School.
