www.newspiritjournal.com Amit Goswami, professor of theoretical nuclear physics, says, “If instead of the two competing world-views of Christianity and scientific materialism that have given us social and political polarization, we heed the message of the latest and most successful theory of science called quantum physics, we could save democracy. We could also find the answer to income disparity and save capitalism, to boot.”

Can Quantum Physics Save Democracy? By Amit Goswami, Ph. D.

Can democracy and capitalism be sustained? The answer is yes, but only if our worldview changes. Currently, there are two competing worldviews. First, there is Christianity. Religious elitism of Christianity, like that of all other religions, is an offshoot of a spiritual elitism whereby one understands and lives by spiritual values such as love and goodness;

in other words, an elitism of moral authority. When people are inspired by the moral authority of spiritual leaders and try to follow them, civilization progresses. In religious elitism, the idea gets corrupted; religious leaders don’t necessarily live by spiritual values any more. They just talk about them and uphold them with borrowed political power. Obviously, civilization suffers with this corruption. The second worldview, scientific materialism, says everything is the movement of

matter in space and time; there is no God, virtue, or sin; all movement is the result of matter and material interactions. If instead of these two competing worldviews of Christianity and scientific materialism — which have given us social and political polarization — we heed the message of the latest and most successful theory of science called quantum physics, we could save democracy. We could also find the answer to income disparity and save capitalism, to boot.

Joyful Relationships – Are They Possible? Noted spiritual teacher Ram Dass is famous for having said, “If you want to see how evolved you are, go visit your family! After years of meditating, walking his spiritual path, and even becoming a wellknown spiritual teacher, visiting his parents would throw him right back into his family of origin issues until he finally healed them. by Krysta Gibson Children, spouses, parents, partners, grandchildren, these family relationships are areas where it can be more difficult to As long as you push behave in an enlightened manner. When you discover the the deepest. Before we know it, we are offmessage they are giving you and act on it, situations will center, saying and doing things that leave us resolve in a most pleasing wondering who is running our brain. way.

Send love, get love. Simple, profound, and not that difficult once you get the hang of it. Give it a try and let me know what happens!

Living The Good Life

Reincarnation, of course, explains a lot of this. Not only do we have current life issues with family members, but frequently we have left-over issues from other lifetimes. Yikes! No wonder our reactions can be so swift and deep. Here is an idea to help. Remember that we are all connected. Your family members – as well as everyone else – are all some part of yourself just as you are a part of them. We are all interconnected. When you can see others this way, it keeps them from being outside yourself. What this enables you to do is to look at their qualities and see how they interact with yours. In most cases, whatever you dislike in someone else is some aspect of yourself that you are disowning. The other person is doing you a favor of showing you this part of yourself. When you welcome this information instead of pushing it away and resenting the other person, you give yourself the gift of insight. When someone, family member or not, pushes your buttons spend some time discovering what is being mirrored to you. Change what needs changing in yourself. Then stand back and watch other people change in response to your changes. It will seem almost miraculous.

A joyful day with other people is one where everyone is able to treat one another with loving respect. This is not an easy thing to accomplish but is worth aiming for. I have found that when I can maintain the consciousness of radiating love to everyone and everything, issues with other people just melt away. Unconditional love is truly an amazing energy that no one can resist. Spend as much of your day consciously radiating unconditional love and see for yourself the difference it will make. Remember: what you send out you get back.

Being in Harmony

see what they are missing.

5. Note how you are eating.

Seven Features of a Cancer-Prevention Diet Continued from Back well-known oncologist in Chicago in which I would interview his patients and their experience of his notso-usual treatment of using extensive nutrition therapy and even guided imagery. I remember being on the phone with these cancer survivors, listening intently to their stories of how they found themselves out of what I call the “cancer labyrinth” not by drugs, but through food and lifestyle changes. As time progressed, I was invited to start giving lectures at a local cancer retreat center in Union, Wash., (www.harmonyhill. org) to help patients with cancer understand more about nutrition. It is so rare to find an idyllic place like Harmony Hill, a meeting ground of cabins, gardens, gathering places, dining hall, and yurt, nestled on a grassy expanse overlooking the Hood Canal, with a mission to improve the lives of people with cancer by offering free weekend retreats. During each retreat, the participants are provided with a sampling of options: organically-grown foods and home-cooked

meals, being in nature and taking leisurely walks, unraveling their stress through foot massages and drumming, engaging in movies and laughter, processing through psychotherapy, and receiving medical information about their cancer. It was almost as though the vision I hoped for from a young age at the foot of my grandmother’s bed had come alive; cancer became a healing journey rather than a strict death sentence. As I always do when I give my talks on cancer, I begin my presentation at Harmony Hill by dedicating it to my grandmother. During the presentation, we talk about the seven key principles of a cancer prevention diet:

Nutrition for Body & Soul by Deanna Minich, PhD, CN, RYT

lean, grass-fed meat that hasn’t been overcooked and to limit portions.

2. Eat the good, essential fats. Cancer is an inflammatory process, so the overall aim should be to balance the too few omega-3 fats in the diet with that of the more inflammation-causing, ubiquitous omega-6 fats. Sources of omega-3s include wild-caught fish, green, leafy vegetables, nuts, and seeds.

3. Avoid high-calorie, low-nutrient foods like junk foods, candy and soft drinks.

1. Reduce the intake of meat and other animal foods. If people choose to eat meat, it is best to select

It’s well-accepted that sugar feeds cancer, so best

to minimize foods that spike blood sugar such as those high in glycemic index, which includes fruits like bananas along with the mainstream variety of “junk” foods.

4. Eat a rainbow assortment of fruits and vegetables. This is perhaps the biggest takeaway from the talk. Eating the rainbow gives us bountiful phytonutrients to ward off inflammation, insulin resistance, and poor response to stress. I like to have people write down their typical food intake and then analyze it for color to

Most of nutrition focuses on what we are eating and not so much how we eat. If you are eating healthy food in a hurry, without mindfulness, you are not getting the full benefit of the meal. Just take your time so your digestion can perform its best, and when your digestion is up to par, everything else seems to work better in the body.

6. Include high-potency antioxidant foods. Examples include crucifers, garlic, turmeric, green tea, berries, tomatoes, and cocoa. One of the latest anti-cancer “superfoods” is microgreens or the tender, nutrient-dense leaflets that you can use to make salads or put into a smoothie. Lately, I’ve been talking about microgreens every time I speak at Harmony Hill, and they took me up on the suggestion and started growing their own Brassica microgreens. You can try growing them on your own or you can now buy them at stores.

7. Choose foods that help your body detoxify and eliminate waste. I’ll never stop chanting the detox mantra. Detoxification is a requirement for everybody on the planet, especially

If you care about your own human health and well-being and have kept up with the current vitamin and supplements advice, you probably know how important proper levels of vitamin D are for us. Makes sense that a proper vitamin D level would be important for our animal friends as well. Turns out, it is. The difference between humans and cats and dogs is that humans can produce vitamin D from sunlight as well as getting it from the food they eat but cats and dogs cannot produce vitamin D from sunlight so their primary source is their diet. If they are eating diets that are either too high or too low in vitamin D content, then there can be

animal friends may be taking contain enzymes that inactivate vitamin D, so that can cause an insufficiency of the vitamin. So how do we know if our animal friends are good with vitamina D? The company I told you about last month, that is doing the great blood testing for cancer in animals, Veterinary Diagnostics Institute (VDI Laboratory Services, www. VDILab.com), has been doing the necessary case studies and is now offering a very affordable vitamin D level blood test for canines. Soon to follow is a feline test. Vitamin D is gaining increased attention for its role in gene regulation and the

maintenance of cellular health. Vitamin D modulates cell growth, neuromuscular and immune function, and reduces inflammation. Studies in both dogs and cats are showing that low stores of vitamin D are associated with a wide range of serious diseases including cancer. New evidence shows a strong link with increasing age and low levels of vitamin D. Since diet is our animal friend’s primary source of vitamin D, it is important to consider what you are feeding them. Recent work has demonstrated that commercial pet food manufacturers have different formulary policies resulting in a wide range of circulating vitamin D in the animals that eat their food. Intestinal absorption may vary from animal to animal so that also can play a role. Homemade diets have extremely wide ranges of vitamin D and can contain too much. Toxicity levels for animals have not been accurately established yet. Based on what we know about humans, however, extremely high levels are required to induce toxicity. Further studies are in progress to examine the role of vitamin D in animals and to better understand absorption and potential toxicity levels. The good news is that the blood test for dogs is now available and any vet can test for you through the VDI Laboratory Services. The test is broken down into deficient, insufficient, and sufficient levels. With results that fall below the sufficient level, supplementation is recommended. As far as lab testing costs run, the charge for this test for dogs is really cheap, only about $20 right now. I imagine the cost to be similar for cats as soon as the test is available, which I am told is any day now. Since the veterinarian drawing the blood and arranging for the test will add on additional charges, if you want to test your animal friends, unless they have a current health issue, you may want to wait until you take them in for something else like an annual physical exam. I am still working on grasping the working concept of this new device. Ever heard of nano technology for flea prevention? Okay,

that’s not what it is but kinda seems like it and sounded cool to me. I am talking about the Pet Protector Disc. The disc is attached to the collar that your animal friend wears. This product, using a combination of electromagnetic and scalar waves, claims to successfully keep fleas, ticks, and other parasites off animals of any age, including sick, convalescent, and pregnant ones, for up to four years. It does this by creating a force field around the animal that repels the parasites before they can attack. There is even an app that can be downloaded to your smartphone to verify that the force field is active. Star Wars anyone? Test results are published on their website, www.petprotector.org, about a four year study done with the disc on animals from different parts of the world, to substantiate its efficiency on fleas and ticks in varying environments with different species of parasites. They say the results were very impressive, with a 96.67% effectiveness rate, which beats the 90% effectiveness rate of the pesticide chemicals used monthly by many pet owners. They say it is the only patented, nontoxic product in the world with scientific proof of effectiveness, no harmful chemicals and no side effects. For four years of protection the cost is very reasonable especially considering the cost of the chemical repellents. I am telling you about this product because I have checked it out fairly extensively, with positive results. The information has come to me from several reliable sources. Every testimonial I can find — and there are many — are very positive. The main reason though, is that I so believe the most commonly used chemical repellants are toxic and dangerous for our animal friends and the planet that I want to do my part in offering other, better solutions to animal parents. And, I plan to order one for my dog. If you have any experience with them or use them on your animal friends, please report to me about the results. Beekeeping: A Shamanic Approach By Shonagh Home

I have been keeping bees for three years now. As a devoted practitioner of shamanism, my approach to beekeeping has focused on communing with the spirit of the bee. The Greeks and Egyptians revered them as divine messengers of the gods. Bees are a delicate and essential component to our ecosystem and they need all the love we can give them. Garden stewardship goes hand-in-hand with beekeeping. I do not use pesticides but instead work with the soil to create vibrantly healthy plants and herbs.

Monroe Garden Club

Just working with the soil deepens my connection to the earth and feeds my soul. I’ve planted a number of bee-friendly flowers that offer the necessary pollen and nectar for the bees to feed on. As I plant and work the garden I engage the devas, asking them to provide my bees with rich nectar. I whisper to the plants and send them prayers of thanks everyday. In doing so I acknowledge their essential role in keeping the bees fed and healthy. After I hived my first bees I did a little ceremony welcoming them to my land. This ritual was my first act of conscious

communication with the bees. I stated my intention, telling them I was a beginner and wanted to give them a beautiful space to grow and thrive. I invited them to communicate with me so I could form a deep connection with them. I did a blessing over each hive and called to the deva of the bee to teach and help me steward them wisely. Thus began my shamanic practice of communion with these divine bee-ings. Three years later I find myself in a sacred soul communion with these beeings. When the weather is warm I regularly sit next to the hives, meditating to develop sensitivity to them. The sound of their hum puts me in an altered state, taking me into deep meditation. The hum of the bees is said to echo the sacred mantra, OM, which is considered to be the seed syllable of created existence. If OM is chanted in just the right way, the cranium and cerebral cortex begin to vibrate, emitting a sound like the hum of bees. The ancients felt the sound of the celestial realm could not be heard except for the buzzing of the bees. In this altered state I journey into the beehive as a loving presence to simply commune. The interior of the hive is dark and warm, teeming with the vibration of humming. I feel myself merge with a pulsating, vital being, as if each individual bee is an integral cell composing a single organism. In a way, the hive is a single organism that requires the cooperation of all the bees for its survival. There is a perceptible intelligence that can be felt as I deepen into this practice. In so doing, I merge into the divinity of the soul of the bee and lose all sense of self-importance. A profound sense of the interconnectedness of all things is felt when I merge with the hive. I feel the sunlight within it. I feel the alchemical

mystery of nectar fermenting into honey and tree resin melding with wax. I feel the vibration of the heavenly scent that emanates from the hive on warm summer days. I am intoxicated and humbled and utterly surrendered to the experience. My soul is nourished every time I engage the bees in this way. The bees come to me in my dreams as messengers. They have told me that in return for my love and care, they are gifting me with greater wisdom. I recently had a dream where the bees gave me a message about my relationship with my younger daughter. She is 13 and no longer a little girl. I had a dream that I was in a room with boxes stacked against the wall. My daughter was sitting on top of the boxes but she was only about 8 years old. Suddenly, I felt bees around me buzzing loudly. I turned my head to see that a door was open and asked her dad to close it. When I turned back the boxes were gone and so was my daughter. I immediately awoke with great pain in my heart as I felt the message come in. I was keeping my daughter in a box and the tiny child is gone now. I must embrace her fully as she is and as she is becoming. I wept with the full realization of that and then tearfully thanked the bees for gifting me the awareness. Our bees are sacred and they welcome our love and assistance as we endeavor to heal our planet. I encourage anyone who loves bees to engage their own sacred practice. The magic that results will be most sweet. In Lak Ech! (“I am another you” – a traditional Mayan phrase – editor’s note) Shonagh Home is an author and shamanic practitioner. It became a dogma, scientific materialism, the idea that everything is matter and material movement. Like all dogma, scientific materialism also excludes and in this way creates a new elite. Initially, its slogan was “[worldly] knowledge is power.” But it eventually developed the more objective slogan, “information is power.” The dogma of the religious worldview left out the material knowledge with which to better the human condition. The dogma of scientific materialism leaves out meanings and values to live by; the quality of living, the basis of civilization. Eventually, the burden of mass poverty initiated change from the religious DOUBLE DORJEE

worldview. And you cannot progress indefinitely on material prosperity anyway because the finiteness of material resources and the environment creates barriers. This problem of sustainability is sinking the scientific materialist worldview. So now there is a worldview polarization. We are caught between two dogmas, each an incomplete worldview without integration with the other. Fortunately, a hefty percentage of people in the middle want to integrate; they want a complete worldview free of dogma, free of exclusivity, free of elitism. To integrate is to bring back the causal efficacy of both the mind (and God) and matter as in modernism. Modernism failed because its inherent mindmatter dualism is not compatible with science; it’s dualism. How do the dual partners interact? In science, all interactions are accomplished by signal exchange; signals carry energy. However, the energy of the material world never changes, energy of the material world never goes out to or comes in from another world. Quantum physics solves this problem of dualism in every respect. Here is a brief summary of how: 1. Objects in quantum

physics are waves of possibility residing in a domain outside of space and time, distinguished by the fact that no signal is needed to communicate in this domain. Signal-less communications are called nonlocal. 2. When we look, a wave of possibility — a multifaceted object — becomes an actualized and localized particle and somehow a single facet manifests. 3. The nonlocal domain of potentiality where objects are possibilities is consciousness itself. That is the agent of choice from a multifaceted wave of possibility to a one-faceted manifest object. 4. In this way, there is causation outside of matter. Call it downward causation since its causal agent – nonlocal consciousness – must be recognized as a non-ordinary “higher” state of consciousness than our usual familiar and local ego. Material “upward” causation (so called because all material causes arise upward from the base level of elementary particles whose interactions ultimately are the only material cause) produces the waves of possibility. It requires downward causation by a higher consciousness to convert possibility into actualities that we experience.

“A quantum society where the worldview is based on consciousness allows outer creativity to accommodate information and material prosperity,” explains Amit Goswami, Ph.D. 5. It recognizes higher consciousness as “God” of religions and realizes that the basis of an integration of science (scientific materialism) and religions (religious elitism) is now a done deal. 6. Further integration, legitimizing our internal experiences of feeling, thinking, and intuition is easily achieved by positing four different worlds of possibility within nonlocal consciousness, which is the ground of all being. The first, material, gives us the material world that we experience by sensing. The second, vital, gives us the experience of feeling when manifest. The third, mind, gives us thought and meaning when manifest. And the fourth, the supramental world, gives us the archetypes that we intuit such as truth, goodness, love, beauty, justice, abundance, etc. The mindbody problem is now solved. Coming back to elitism, does elitism go away in this integration? Does a quantum society achieve what historically no other

human society has ever been able to achieve? The answer is yes. The reason is subtle. A quantum society where the worldview is based on consciousness allows us outer creativity to accommodate information and material prosperity. However, the society also legitimizes subtle internal experiences and acknowledges the value of inner creativity that manifests subtle energies, that is positive emotions, meaningful knowledge, embodiment of archetypes, and even happiness in the form of wholeness. Inner creativity does not necessarily require acquiring sophisticated knowledge systems. And more importantly, the creative inner achievement makes you humble, not an elitist. Now that you have experienced transformation, you no longer are happy denying inner suffering by the carpet of material pleasures. If an inner creative has any authority, it is moral authority; it comes from nonlocal consciousness transcending separateness. Amit Goswami, Ph.D. is a professor of theoretical nuclear physics (retired the University of Oregon where he served) since 1968. He is a pioneer of the new paradigm of science called “science within consciousness.” The author of eight books his most recent, Quantum Creativity: Think Quantum, Be Creative (March 2014), explains all facets of creativity: its definition, the quantum thinking it entails, and what is required to be creative. He will be in Seattle May 10 at East West Bookshop. For information on his seminar, go to www.eastwestbookshop. com/events/6201 or call (800) 587-6002.

Can your companion animals help you live a better life? Or do you believe it is a one-way energy street between you and them? In Animal Wisdom, Learning from the Spiritual Lives of Animals by Linda Bender, DVM (North Atlantic Books) we learn about the wisdom our animal friends have for us. Through stories as well as in some step-by-step practical ways we can learn to be more intuitive and communicative with animals, we can develop a deeper spiritual connection with other species. Animal lovers of all types will love this book. Do you enjoy short quotes from wise people? If so, you’ll want to get the book having the time of your life, little lessons to live by by Allen Klein (Viva Editions). Try these on for size. “Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself,” – George Bernard Shaw; “Life is the art of drawing without an eraser,” –John W. The first is Yoga Meditation, Still Your Mind and Awaken Your Inner Spirit, by Stephen Sturgess (Watkins Publishing), a London-based yoga and meditation teacher. His book teaches yoga as preparation for meditation. His teachings are based on the concepts

of Raja yoga as taught by Paramhansa Yogananda. The book explains the eightlimbed path of yoga taught by Patanjali, and gives hatha poses as well as instructions in breathing and meditation that can help the reader experience the deeper dimensions of yoga practice. Yin Yoga by Ulrica Norberg (Skyhorse Publishing) focuses on the fascia, the type of tissue that holds our bodies together. “Fascia is what gives us our form and what makes it possible for us to work our amazing bodies in the ways we do,” explains the author. The beautifully illustrated book shows numerous poses one can do to improve the flow of prana or qi in the body that will result in improved circulation, reduced stress levels, and a calm mind. If you want more joy in your life, The Doors of Joy, 19 Meditations for Authentic Living by Daniel Odier (Watkins Publishing) is a sweet book you’ll find helpful. Each chapter offers thoughts about attaining a joyful life and questions/practices to help us attain joy on an ongoing basis. This is a small but very powerful book that could be worked with for years. Osogbo, Speaking to the Spirits of Misfortune by Ocha’ni Lele (Destiny Books) explains the role of osogbo (misfortune) in our lives. The author says it is misfortune that motivates us and brings great evolution to the world. More than 40 stories are shared from the ancient Yoruba of West Africa. This book is a great chance to learn about the different spirits of osogbo and their place with the 256 odu of the diluggún, the divination system used in Santería to receive guidance from the orishas. In order to make the most of the video, one must keep in mind that a sense and ability of basic yoga positions is assumed, and one must have adequate balance to use the sets. In other words, the poses are called in a flow-type manner, without introduction or instruction, so this reviewer would say that it is not for beginners or practitioners without a solid sense of poses by name and experience in a flow-type sequence. The sequences are modeled, but there are no safety queues and no instructor. Aside from the understanding that this is not for beginners, this is an excellent, high-quality video that offers challenging, portable, and complete routines. Since there are six different routines offered, one could practice for a time daily and have a day off, the same as I recommend to my yoga students. Depression and the Spiritual Journey By Yve Bowen

There are many who experience regular depressive episodes that come about as a result of the letting go that is part-and-parcel of the spiritual journey. Not everyone may experience spiritual depression, but for those who do, it can often be a symptom of releasing unhelpful stories and emotions which either no longer serve us or match who we are becoming. In the context of the spiritual journey, depression often comes about because there is already a feeling of difference and otherness from those who embrace mainstream thinking and doing. That sense of not being understood, valued, or appreciated for our willingness to go deeper and look deeper, can be demoralizing if there is no one else around to appreciate that commitment. It is also true that allowing long-buried feelings to come up and be explored is not always the most pleasant aspect of the commitment to seeking unchanging truth. There is often a rejection by our egoic nature – which wants to cling on to its victim status – to exploring events from a broader perspective. The feelings of depression in this case are often a sign of the resistance of the ego to stepping into greater awareness and deeper understanding.

A COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER FOR SOULFUL LIVING

A Healing Music Journey By Patricia Herlevi

One day in 2010, I woke up with a sore throat, which I had fought throughout the day. I made myself a cup of slippery elm tea and listened to “Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto in A major, K.622” through my headphones. I visualized Mozart’s face while I listened to the music and I felt my body’s vibration rise, I felt loved by the music. The sore throat subsided and I avoided coming down with a virus.

Now, I wonder if musical composers like Mozart who was Masonic, experimented with metaphysical ideas. Did he know that combining certain instruments, composing in specific keys and building musical architecture would result in healing music? Did he know about quantum physics before the rest of us or that musical vibration that can either heal the body through harmony or cause illness through dissonance with no resolution? Or did the young composer simply channel the divine without his awareness? What did Bach, Beethoven, or Debussy know about the power of music? I’ve read enough scholarly biographies on

the composers that mainly delve into the personal lives of the composers and then toss music theory at me. However, I want to know if the composers found music healing during their time. Many composers that I’ve researched suffered from serious illnesses. Could they have been composing music as a balm for themselves? What about Debussy when he was fighting a battle with cancer or Mozart who died at 35? Perhaps, Beethoven composed with such extreme dynamics because he was losing his hearing and he felt angry, helpless, but still hopeful about his situation. So through the compensations these composers made, they ended up

creating something that would heal others down the line. Should we discern when we listen to classical music? Is all of it healing or just the music that had healing intentions behind it? Is the music of Wagner healing? Some experts say yes, but I have my doubts. How can music composed by a megalomaniac act as a healing balm? Or was there a side of Wagner that was kept hidden from us, a more vulnerable side in need of deep healing and his music could have provided that for him? What about the dangerous decibel level of a live symphony orchestra performance? How is it that we don’t read about classical musicians complaining about hearing loss? Do the musical timbre, sweeping melodies, and passionate performances protect them in some way? So far, I’ve placed a great emphasis on European classical music because of its healing potential, but other types of music also defined my healing music path. In 1997 when I was diagnosed with multiple chemical sensitivity syndrome and stopped performing my music in Seattle clubs, (prior to that diagnoses I performed my music for 10 years), I also stopped listening to music. Out of bitterness and growing sensitivities to sound, especially loud noise, I turned my back on music. A year prior to that decision, I would not have imagined moving in that direction. At that time, I was sending my demo tapes to independent record labels, and even receiving a few nibbles. However, I suffered from depression as I immersed myself in disturbing lyrics, and people could have labeled my lyrics as negative. I only needed a time out to rethink my relationship with music. A radical healing occurred when I attended the World of Music Arts and Dance (WOMAD) in 1998 and discovered a true world music community. As my friends and I walked around the festival grounds in Redmond, Wash., I heard strains of classical music of India compliments of Ravi Shankar and his daughter Anoushka, an eclectic band from Angers, France, Lo’Jo who left a musical mark on my life, and Latin American music. When I sat on the grass and listened to the cacophony of ethnic folk instruments, I felt at home. I was ready to embrace music again, though a new type of music called world music. This felt tribal. I had returned home. Fast forward to 2007, as a college project I launched The Whole Music Experience blog where I posted reviews of CDs already in my collection. Soon labels started sending me classical, traditional, world music, and jazz recordings which I dutifully reviewed. However, I started noticing how

Martha’s Canine, Feline and All CreatureCounseling (360) 217-7258 www.marthanorwalk.com marthalight@aol.com

my sensitivities reacted to the different instruments, timbres, rhythms, melodies, and harmonies. Suddenly that music my mother played for me during my earliest years returned to me (my mother played music for me when I was in her womb and throughout my childhood), but this time as a powerful healing force. Rock music no longer interested me and in fact, I could no longer tolerate it for reasons unknown. Perhaps my body had switched frequencies or changed the channel. A few years later, I created a music laboratory in my apartment and tracked musical effects on my body and mind. I listened to sacred music from around the world, but not as a member of any religion. I took workshops on the power of intent and learned everything I could about sound healing. However, my interest revolved around actual music genres and compositions, and not the use of sound healing tools, though they have their place. As my music consciousness developed further, I developed healing music workshops and music appreciation lectures, which without any academic credential in music, I taught at various venues. In one of my workshops, I explore the elements of music that create its wholeness. By comparing “whole music” to “whole foods” and by tracking emotional and physical responses to music in a diary, students develop a music diet that’s healthy for them. I couldn’t have developed this workshop without my unique musical journey. Oh, and I’m happy to report that I’m able to listen to some types of pop and rock music again without adverse effects. Do you suffer from TMH (Too Much Help)? The good news these days is that the world is ready and waiting to help you with whatever is at-hand. But lately, I hear the word “overwhelm” creep into the conversation. There are “free summits with experts” where you can exchange your email address to build the mailing lists

A COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER FOR SOULFUL LIVING When you are feeling overwhelmed, consider these suggestions:

1. Do one thing at a time. As you undertake any project, sit quietly for a moment and ask yourself, “What is my next step?” It may have nothing to do with the project itself, but rather your wellbeing.

2. Unravel the issues. Two of the stickiest excuses for not moving forward are

time- and money-related. You may undertake something because you need money. Or you want to do something, but feel that you’re too old, or too young, or there’s not enough time. Take that excuse out of the equation and look at it again with fresh eyes. (This is similar to “the lottery test:” if you won the lottery, and money was no longer an issue, would you still undertake the project?)

3. First things first. Many of us spend a lot of time getting ready. We create beautiful spaces, or buy new computers, we take classes, or get rid of what we believe might be blocking us. But the truth is, we just don’t feel confident. We don’t feel assured of success. Here’s the deal: you will never know until you put something into the world. You may score big on your first try, or it may take many iterations. For example, much of the help for writers forgets to mention Step 1: write something. After you’ve written, or made a prototype of your product, or put together a plan, then you can find help getting it into the world. There’s plenty.

4. Don’t give away your power. We all have stories of the times that we ignored our intuition. Experts are only people with opinions. They may have had experiences that worked for them, but they aren’t you. Check in with yourself. If the advice sounds great and really resonates with you, take it. If the expert tells you something, but your intuition is saying something else, wait. If you don’t get a clear “Yes!” it means, “Not right now.” We have an internal guidance system that might begin showing up as a vague feeling, a hunch, or things that we might call coincidence. But, the more we pay attention to it, the more our intuition blossoms, we find that what we used to call coincidence is more often a trail marker on our journey. The universe of help is at your fingertips. It’s not going anywhere. Take only what you can digest at this moment. You have everything you need to get moving right now. You don’t need to do, to learn, or to understand everything at once. Rebecca Cooper can be found at Stand8.com and FlipYourThinking.com.

The Profitable

Soul Proprietor

Just about all business owners – but especially soul proprietors – tend to ride the revenue roller coaster and it has never been a fun ride to be on. For those in the helping professions, there seems to be a consistent mindset that somehow it is wrong to accept compensation for doing their work. Soul proprietors very often say to me “I just want to help people; it is not about the money.” The reality is, it is always about the money. It has to be. Whether they’ll admit it or not, people go into business not just to help their fellow human beings, but to earn a living as well. In our society, the bills have to be paid. And we do that with the exchange of money. The healing you do, and the solutions you provide to the problems your clients have is of great value to them. Those healed – those whose problems have been taken away – expect to pay you, want to pay you, and are more than willing to pay you for the value they’ve received. Your job, after providing the healing and the problem solving, is to graciously accept payment as an acknowledgment of the value you’ve given. Everyone is happy; everyone is taken care of. No one has been harmed because of the exchange of some currency. So the big mystery for you, the soul

is the freedom that you have. You get to choose exactly how you want to spend your time and when, and with whom! So creating a profile of your ideal week that includes time for marketing, time for business development, and time for serving clients will make your days easier and your weeks fly by. If you don’t know what you’re doing over the next 30 days then you are adrift. Planning what you are going to do every day – and then doing it – is the only way you’ll grow your business and become profitable. You must be honed-in on the most important tasks each day and execute them one by one. 3. Marketing. Without marketing no one will know that your business exists. These days, the old adage of location, location,

they come back again and again. These days, you can’t get by without some kind of online presence. So navigating a well-thought-out Internet gameplan is essential. Will you have a website? Of course! Will you do e-mail marketing? Probably. Will you use social media? Maybe. Your carefully planned Internet strategy can increase your visibility and bring in the clients. Your database is like gold, so treat it that way. Next to having cash in the bank, this is the biggest asset your business has. On a daily basis you’ll want to be leveraging your contacts and connecting with someone either by phone, email, postal mail, or better yet, all three. And last, you’ll want to have meaningful conversations with your prospects. Soul proprietors want to have authentic engagement with anyone with whom they might work. That one-to-one time is crucial in getting to know whether you can really help someone or whether that person is a perfect-fit client for you. Either by phone or in-person you want to listen carefully and respond appropriately. Follow these best practices and your business or practice will be full all the time. Your days will be satisfying and joyful, and your coffers will overflow.

Spiritually Based Management: Making a Difference in the Workplace By DS Clark

Unfortunately, the one thing many businesses have in common is poor management. You’ve heard the stories of what happens when someone gets called to their manager’s office and the door is closed. There is yelling and belittling, trying to control employees with fear. This is called verbal abuse, and is equivalent to the bully at school.

Sadly, this type of management is commonplace and no one reports their unawakened manager because they are afraid they will lose their job. These managers I am referring to are not inherently bad people, but they are in a state of unconsciousness, suffering, and so unaware of the animosity they are creating. They are projecting outward through the egoic self, the place where they are never wrong, and cannot apologize for their controlling and tawdry behavior. Can you imagine a world where

NewSpirit JOURNAL

people who managed others honored their position? They would be awakened, kind and caring people you would look up to; people you would respect. They would lead by being good role models. In this world, there would be no yelling; no pointing of fingers for simple human mistakes. I am always floored when I hear these tales of abusive behavior. Tales that fill me with sadness. I make it a point to know the pulse of my coworkers. Why? Because I care about them as people and I like to see them happy. I know when they are happy they are productive and get results, not just for themselves, but for the company they work for. They leave for the day carrying with them a sense of accomplishment, that what they did mattered. The feel that they made a difference, not just for themselves, but others as well. And isn’t that what sits at the core of all humans: to serve and be of service?

MAY 2014

What really happens when your boss yells, stomps feet, breathes out smoke, and belittles you? You leave for the day, angry and resentful. In short, you are unproductive. For anyone out there in a position of power, you have been given an opportunity to help guide others, which is an honor and a privilege. And when there is a problem, remember to show a bit of humility. Use a velvet glove, not a boxing glove. Look at your coworkers through the eyes of compassion and empathy. After all, they are presenting you with a great opportunity to seize the moment and deepen, to step outside the egoic-self and grow. Make your encounters impactful and meaningful. In other words, be the leader you would want to turn to. Spiritually-based management in a business is evident in genuine compassion for humankind and all that it implies. It encompasses compassion and consideration for other people by making decisions and

conducting oneself in a way that cares for people and the world we live in. As Gandhi said, “Be the change that you want to see in the world.” DS Clark can be reached at dsclark@ hubbardradio.com (425) 653-9462.

Tai Chi and Developing a Relationship with the Earth in Everyday Life By Mary Newbill

Tai chi is an ancient Chinese art that is both a health exercise and a meditation, that works with gentle movement to open the flow of chi (life force) in our bodies. It is a form of chi kung (qi gong) as well as a sport and a martial art as one grows in skill. It is usually practiced as a solo exercise for health or relaxation and is often prescribed by Chinese doctors when one becomes ill. People sometimes practice together and it is a common early morning sight in China to see groups of people moving through the various forms or practicing with a partner in developing their skill in Push Hands, the martial art application of the movements. We all need teachers or mentors in learning tai chi, as the movements are very specific in order to stimulate the flow of chi, and since we can’t see ourselves, it is difficult to know where we are still holding stress (not relaxed) or where we move more than necessary. The form is based on economy of movement and upon the natural way that animals move. Think of your cat or dog resting, peacefully relaxed, yet ready to bound into movement, so efficiently and freely at any moment. Many of the poetic names of tai chi movements describe animals or nature in movement: “White Crane Spreads its Wings,” “Blue Dragon Swings its Tail,” or “Wind Ruffles the Lotus Leaves.” You can get a feeling for the benefits of tai chi by practicing deep relaxation with certain postures. Standing erect and relaxed each person becomes a connection between heaven and earth energies. Take time to be aware of your breath taking it deep into your abdomen as well as your chest. When we breathe into the belly it helps us to relax, so take deep breaths and relax more with each exhale and expanding with the inhale.

Tai chi is based on economy of movement and upon the natural way that animals move. Then, put your attention on your feet, pointing them straight ahead, and keeping your knees relaxed you will open the kidney meridian which helps our body source earth energy. This connection is a major source of energy for the body as well as a channel for grounding and releasing stress and tension back into the earth. The earth is a safe place to let go of stress as it is just energy to the earth and can be recycled into something else. This has been studied in the West recently and called “Earthing.” It is the phenomena that we experience when we have had time to lie down in a meadow, a park, a beach, and find we feel refreshed and relaxed upon arising. We can consciously practice more such a relationship with the earth while standing. Recently I took a workshop from Sana Shanti, intrigued by the many positive things I had heard about her unique use of earth energy in her tai chi workshops. I found that one need not be a tai chi practitioner to benefit from what Sana has to share. She is acknowledged as a gifted instructor using grounding or earth energy to help students with balance, alignment, and strength, all

the while reducing stress, tension, and pain. Sana has developed and integrated her unique awareness of personal and earth energy that can be applied in tai chi practice, martial arts and sports, and shows us how these practices apply to all dimensions of our overall health: physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. For example, try standing with your feet shoulder-width apart and relax all your joints. Take time to be aware of where your weight is. Gently shift your weight to different parts of your feet and notice how that influences your alignment. Where does your body feel most relaxed? Can you tell where your body is most balanced? Most still? What happens in your mind when focusing in such a way? Next try experimenting with the sensation of rooting into the earth. Imagine you have roots growing from your feet. How far down do your roots go? How does it affect your sensation of grounding or rooting into the earth? Notice if there is greater body awareness or if you feel more present to this very moment. Has your awareness of your surroundings become more acute? Does it change your breath,

and if so, how? Do you sense the earth returning energy to you? Are you aware of any other changes? If just a few moments of tuning into these experiences can deepen your relaxation and well-being, think how you might feel were you to include a few moments of such awareness into your day, especially when feeling rushed or stressed. This connection with the earth can be cultivated and applied to everyday life as well as exercise. We can all benefit from developing a stronger awareness of how we are supported by earth energy in every moment of our lives. Experience Sana’s body-based transformational training, Saturday, May 10, at Phinney Community Center, 6532 Phinney Ave N. from 1 to 5 p.m., Room 32 in the lower brick building. $10 registration fee and $15 hour, cash only. Mary Newbill, LMHC, NTP, has studied and practiced tai chi for 40 years. She teaches tai chi through the UW Experimental College, and privately, and can be reached at (206) 364-6297 if you have questions.

Seven Features of a Cancer-Prevention Diet

Nutrition for Body & Soul by Deanna Minich, PhD, CN, RYT

Deanna Minich with her grandmother.

Anyone who is into health has a story of how they got there. For me, it was more than three decades ago that I witnessed, as a 10-yearold, my grandmother battling breast and bone cancer. I remember the days she would return from treatments, weak, fragile, and nauseous, with only enough strength to crawl into bed. One of those days, while standing at her side, I found myself withdrawn from the external bustle of family and lost in an internal quiet of reflection. This trio of chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery only made her sicker, wearing her down, ultimately leaving her feeling defeated, quite the opposite of who she was most of her lifetime: a wonder woman mother of six who had been able to “do it all.” For the next two years as she made this arduous journey, I secretly promised to myself that I would eventually do something throughout my life to help others with cancer. Years from that point in time, during my graduate school days studying nutrition, I had the privilege of doing some parttime research for a Continued on Page 4
