A Taste of Paradise and a Touch of Bliss By Jalaja Bonheim

Many years ago, I used to hang out with a little two-year-old boy called Ben. One sunny morning, as we were putzing around in the back yard, he got curious about his dad’s tool shed. So I took him by the hand, and together, we cautiously pushed the door open. The first thing we saw was a dusty table, and on it, a rusty old flashlight. “Wazzat?” Ben demanded. “It’s a flashlight,” I explained. To my surprise, it worked. Crouching down, I showed Ben how, by pushing the button in one direction or the other, one could turn the light on or off. Ben’s eyes lit up; he loved anything with buttons. “Try it out,” I suggested. Ben stood very quietly, turning the rusty thing over in his pudgy hands. With a little frown of concentration, he pushed the button and the light came on. Off, on, off, on. Then, he grew very quiet. For the longest time, he just stood there, gazing adoringly at the beat-up old thing in his hand. Then, he sighed, a deep, contented sigh. “That’s beautiful!” he breathed. Mesmerized, I thought to myself, “What if I could forget everything I’ve learned about beauty? What if

Jahala Bonhiem says that beauty is always accessible and is not an external set of conditions but an inner experience that opens our hearts, shifts our perception of the world and fills us with joy.

I could forget all the messages I’ve absorbed about what’s beautiful and what’s not? What if I just started looking for beauty, listening for it, without any preconceived notion of where I might find it?” This has been a practice I’ve been using ever since, and one that never fails to remind me that we’re surrounded by a myriad forms of beauty just waiting to be noticed, appreciated, and celebrated. As a workshop leader, I’m privileged to work in some exquisitely beautiful spaces. Surrounded by nature, they’re serene and graciously appointed. But I also work in places like the West Bank, where trees are rare and the luxuries we tend to take for granted in this country are largely absent. Yet here too, beauty is always accessible. Beauty is, after all, not an external set of conditions but an inner experience that opens our hearts, shifts our perception of the world, and fills us with joy.

Beauty is firmly rooted in the physical world; in the curve of a cheek, the color of an apricot, or the shape of a mountain. At the same time, it’s something utterly transcendent. Carrying messages from beyond, it offers us a taste of paradise and a touch of bliss. To me – and, I suspect, to most if not all of us – beauty is no mere luxury. Rather, it’s a necessity without which life would feel barren and meaningless. Beauty reassures our anxious heart that spirit abides within this world; we have not been abandoned in a material wasteland. “Beauty,” said the Sufi mystic Rabia over 1200 years ago, “helps me to know God cares for me.” I could not agree more. Yes, we live in a material world. And yet, as light shines through a stained glass window, spirit shines through matter. And when we catch a glimpse of that radiance, we call it beautiful.

Does beauty rank high on your list of priorities? Is it something you value? Then consider whether your lifestyle actually supports and fosters that experience. Continued on on Page 10

Suggest ions for a Happy New You!

Indeed, it is that time again, that time when many of us set goals, resolutions, and plans for the new year. This is, of course, an artificial beginning point since we can declare a new year any time, any day. However, since many people are doing this at the same time worldwide, we can participate in the group energy and use it to our advantage. Here are a few ideas that might help you in making changes any time of the year. These are a few things I have noticed in my own life as well as in the lives of others, concepts that if practiced seem to be very supportive of change-making. 1. Make goals and plans and write them down. This seems obvious and I am always surprised to learn how few people actually commit goals to writing or make plans to meet the goals. There are a ton of books, websites, and other resources that can guide you through the process of choosing and making goals as well as how to make plans that work. Just don’t let yourself get bogged down in this research and fail to use what you learn.

4. Frequency of action trumps spurts. You will be more successful if you walk every day than if you walk only on the

6. Don’t let moods derail your good intentions.

Living The Good Life

Moods can seduce you into giving up, getting distracted, or changing tactics when that is not in your best interests. Contrary to what by Krysta the world-at-large says, moods are not necessary and we are capable of living at a higher level of reality where moods don’t exist. Make this the year you overcome moods, align with your own higher soul-self and live from this higher dimension.

9. Be playful! When we’re trying to accomplish something, we tend to do a lot of metaphysical grunting and groaning. Lighten up! Have fun with whatever it is you’re doing. Look for the humor in your situation and in your life. As Paramhansa Yogananda says in his delightful poem Samadhi, “A tiny bubble of laughter, I am become the sea of mirth itself.”

2. For whatever you are doing, have a practice or routine you follow. This builds positive habits. If it’s meditation, have a certain spot where you meditate daily, use a particular type of meditation, and meditate at the same time very day. If it is some sort of artistic pursuit, have a particular place and way you approach it every day. If you read the stories of successful authors, painters, and musicians, you will find they have routines that support their creativity. Find yours. Aristotle said, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”

3. Never use the word “try.” Do something or don’t do something, but never try. When we’re clear on our goals and plans, trying becomes moot. We put our plan into action, adjust sails when necessary, and go from there.

focus on this year instead of making a list of resolutions. Focus everything you do and are on this one word for the entire year. Choose a word like persistence, grace, laughter, creativity and live it for one year.

10. Live in infinity.

weekends. It’s better to do something shorter in duration and more freqently than it is to do a lot of something only once in awhile. Bestselling author Gretchen Rubin writes, “What I do every day matters more than what I do once in awhile.”

5. Look at how you do things, not only at what you do. Is your life designed to support the changes you say you want? If not, what needs to change? Do you allow yourself enough solitude, enough time to focus your efforts? Do you give yourself the gift of taking classes, reading books, working with a mentor or coach? Make sure the hows of your life merge successfully with the whats.

7. Don’t wait for the cavalry to come. You are the cavalry! Sometimes we don’t take action because we’re waiting for someone or something to save us. Getting the inheritance, winning the lottery, or landing the perfect job or relationship isn’t going to save us from ourselves. Whatever issues we’re facing right now will be the same ones we face then. Deal with them now.

8. If spiritual ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) is an issue for you... ...follow the plan in the little book I reviewed last month, One word That Will Change Your Life. Choose one word to

The nows of our lives are such a tiny part of who we are. If we can learn to experience ourselves as living in infinity, the pressure drops from our shoulders, we can relax, and live up to the greatness we truly are. Our lives are not meant to be spent dealing with the pettiness of this world. Go large and be the infinite creation you truly are. I wish you the best, most joyful and loving year you have ever had. Let 2014 be the year you will remember as the turning point, the year you crossed the threshold of material living into one of joyful spiritual exploration. Morning Constitutional By William Wittmann

I’ve just returned from my morning constitutional; a morning walk. Healers a century or two ago would have recommended it. These days, we don’t even talk about our constitution or take steps to build it. In that way, the idea is as quaint as building character. Constitution refers to your physical status including your vitality, health, and strength. It includes your ability to shrug off disease and recover from injuries. After 40 years of working with mind/body healing, I find that your constitution relates to your character and also reflects your deepest heart. I suggest you take a morning constitutional in order to build your constitution and your character as well as feeding your soul. I rise early and workout with kettlebells, eat, drive to work, meditate, then

I wait for the sun to come up so I can take my morning constitutional.

Walking Meditation I use this time to quiet my mind and connect to the day. I listen to sounds, both human and animal. I hear the rustle of leaves and my own footfalls. I see deeply into the distance and widely into my peripheral vision. I center myself in my environs. Play with those ideas for yourself. When your mind worries at your problems, return to simply seeing what’s around you in the here-and-now. And listen to the sphere of sound around you. And feel the movement of your body internally and through space. Your morning walk can be aerobic, but keep it on the bottom end of the heart rate zone. Try to mosey instead. The morning constitutional builds mind/body health and character. We’re not shooting for sweaty aerobics here. Do that some other time. You can walk with other people if you want. I’m an introvert, so I can walk with one person, not two. And

JANUARY 2014 most of the time I prefer to walk alone. Keep it intimate. Do turn off the phone. Really, let yourself get away for 20 minutes. I enjoy knowing that no one really knows where I am for that time. I am completely free. The morning constitutional gives you an opportunity to connect with the world and come into the full presence of the sacred. Each day.

How Long, When, and Where? Generally, it takes 20 minutes for your mind to shift out of monkey mind. So, I’d recommend at least 20 minutes. I aim from between 30 to 45 minutes. You can walk farther, longer. Daylight strengthens us like other nutrients. That’s why I wait until first light to take my walk. Walk in the light. On most days, that’s the only outdoors time you or I will get. Not so long ago, we each spent hours outdoors every day; in this lifetime as a child and historically as a species. Go out in all weathers, it will strengthen your constitution, your immune

system will build muscle. And you’ll build character. Remember, there is no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing. Wear what works. I have learned to love the ripple circles that rain makes in puddles. You can walk anywhere that pleases you. Consider: the easier it is to get to places to walk the more likely it will be that you’ll do it. Explore and discover what feeds your heart and soul. Have a variety of routes if that helps. It helps me. When I travel, I love to explore routes in places I’ve never been. May you be lighthearted and free. Spiritual and Shamanic Apprenticeship

Celebrating our Twenty-Fifth Year of Healing, Knowledge and Guidance

Our theme for 2014 is Nordic Shamanism, Spirituality and Mythology We pursue and relish the clarity of firsthand and experiential knowledge. For over thirty years of teaching together, we have been on a journey, both literally and metaphorically, to touch the mystery and myth and the spiritual and healing lore of indigenous cultures throughout the world. Our adventures have taken us from our present home on the edge of a fjord in Western Washington through the North and South Americas, to the icy plateaus and volcanos of Iceland, through the windswept barrens of the British Isles, onward across the Orkney Islands, Norway, continental Europe and the Mediterranean, to Asia and Polynesia. Due to our extensive firsthand experiences of the Otherworld and our initiation within various indigenous shamanic cultures and our direct experience of the ‘old ways’ of these cultures, we will explore and share the knowledge and teachings of the pre-Christian Germanic-Norse-Icelandic spiritual beliefs and practices.

Being Heard

“hear” them. That’s one reason writing can be such a lonely job. However, active listening is only half of the equation. “Being heard” requires responsibility on both sides. Here’s a list I’ve compiled as I’ve watched thousands of people who, like the majority of us, want to be heard. Some were a lot better at it than others.

By Ariele M. Huff

I’m a paid listener, and that’s only fair as I’ve also been an unpaid listener all my life. For 35 years, I’ve edited books and taught writing classes where I’ve heard somewhere over 5,000 people’s stories, opinions, and jokes. Early in my teaching and editing, I realized I was applying the techniques I’d learned being an eldest child; confidante to both parents: leaning in, plenty of direct eye contact, nodding (sometimes I look like I have Parkinson’s), affirmations like “ah” and “oh” or laughter or sighing (I learned to minimize that when I worked doing radio interviews), and facial expressions that react to what’s being said. All of those are nonverbal signals to show that I’m not just listening, but truly hearing what is being said. They aren’t enough. In spite of the common applause for “good listeners,” many people misunderstand what this means. Catch phrases like, “You have two ears and only one mouth,” imply that being heard only requires others not to speak. Helping women awaken the Soul Goddess within

1. Consider your audience: What

kind of topics will interest or bore them? What will offend them?

Movies like Being There demonstrate just how silly that precept is. Peter Sellers plays the role of a developmentally challenged man, Chance, and Shirley MacLaine a wealthy woman who takes him into her home. In one scene, Chance placidly watches a television show while Shirley’s character rattles on and implies all kinds of things from his silence. In effect, he is totally ignoring her, even though she is talking to him continuously. That is not “being heard.” Even in my early relationships with family members, I used “active listening” skills: repetition, feedback, questions, and sharing of similar stories to build trust and to elicit further depth. When I’ve asked class groups what makes them feel heard, they often cite these kinds of responses. Anyone who has been published in a magazine or blog knows that simply potentially exposing people to your ideas does not assure anyone will truly

2. Spend as much time watching your listener as you’d like them to spend watching you. This helps in recognition of confusion, disinterest, or distaste.

3. Change approaches or topics if audience attention wanders. 4. Find different ways or examples to make a point. Studies

have shown that people recall things they’ve been told three times. Ears stay open longer if variety is employed.

open and “hearing” when the speaker is looking for a patsy, a villain, or a savior.

7. Be entertaining or informative if possible. 8. Don’t be known as the one who only shares the difficulties. Share the successes and joys too.

9. If you share problems, share solutions you’re trying or want to try. That takes away the inferred request for advice that simply sharing a trouble can imply.

10. Ask for help if you want it.

Then, respect the response whether it’s useful or not.

11. Be clear that you aren’t looking for advice if you aren’t. 12. Don’t share problems with someone you pay for help and then expect not to hear solutions.

Doctors, teachers, ministers, counselors, plumbers, and editors solve problems for a living and assume if you’re there and laying out a predicament that you’re requesting a cure for it. So, being heard is more than just talking or just not talking. Both sides require skills to achieve the best results.

Is There a Magic Wand for the Perfect Relationship? By Marilyn Redmond

I always wanted a perfect relationship. Finally escaping a 30year marriage filled with domestic violence and fear, I was praying not to recreate the dynamics I was leaving. Surprisingly, I heard an inner voice telling me that I had to change myself to attract what I wanted. It said when I became those characteristics that were favorable, I would find a partner with the same qualities. After years of receiving counseling, attending support groups using the 12-steps, and participating in classes to learn healthy behaviors, I began to awaken. Experiencing a few more unhealthy relationships, my inner voice began to reveal some normal and rational solutions. One of the first things that was revealed to me was my need to be in control. I thought that would keep me out of harm’s way, because I witnessed my father beating my mother repeatedly. At a very young age, I learned from my mother how to manipulate situations by being passive. Sadly, I began to realize that my mother’s passive controlling behavior was not working for her or for me. Her modeling was not giving me the results that I was trying to achieve. In truth, they never worked for her either. That is the insanity of how the human mind works when living in fear.

In Life Between Life by Joel L. Whitton, M.D. Ph.D, I read that I could change my reality. This was a new idea for me. I always stayed in a safe mode. I was a robot going through life. I had no way to experience anything because my feelings were shut down from fear. Through my spiritual support groups, I began to understand that I was creating my own reality out of my fears. Through the universal laws of cause and effect, I was recreating my own disappointingly, destructive life. What did I have to change? A magic wand would have greatly relieved my pain and the huge emotional costs to me. What if I made the wrong decision? Initially, I had to start making decisions and not continue sitting on the fence to be out of injurious consequences. My basis for living was not making decisions. If I did not make a decision, then I could agree with either side in any discourse and everyone would accept me. I finally realized that I needed to change my “flawed basis for living” and take a stand. To stand up for myself and my ideas was fearful and new to me. How could I have enough courage to have an opinion and speak up to be heard? Since I was attending spiritual groups that were teaching me to overcome my fears, I decided to try it. I was terrified to change. As a child in Sunday school, I learned that I was not good enough for God, I had never invited God into my everyday life and the decisions I made. I would now allow a loving spirit that I defined as God, to help me. Using faith was not common for me at that time. I needed to have faith in something greater than myself. My first attempts of using faith to act and think in a more positive way were difficult. However, the results were actually better than I expected. I felt good about the experience. I learned that when I came

Tips to build more loving relationships 1. Focus on yourself and make yourself happy. That is not the job of others. 2. Respond but do not over-react to other people, places, or things. 3. Accept others as they are, whether or not you agree with them. 4. Ask, “What is my part? What is my responsibility? Do I need to change anything in me?” 5. See with your heart. Everyone else is a child of God the same as you. 6. Allow people to have their own reality even if it does not agree with yours. 7. Ask what you can contribute to this relationship to help it grow and thrive? 8. Validate yourself; give yourself credit for a job well done. 9. Release your expectations, communicate your needs, and negotiate the outcome so both people get their needs met. 10. Realize that you would rather be happy than right. How important is it to win an argument?

from a positive place I could have results that were positive. I was becoming a new person that I liked. Today, I am the person who I want to be with, a rational, mature human being with common sense. In releasing my old fears, I surrendered my ego. This allowed the love in my heart to be the cause of my actions. This new process allowed me to become a cooperative, friendly person and to have a harmonious relationship with others. I could not change them, but I did change me. Eventually, I attracted another person of like mind and together we have learned to give each other the space and mistakes to continue growing in our inner journey. It feels like unconditional love. Neither of us has an ego that needs to win. He has a life, I have a life, and we share wonderful experiences traveling, enjoying plays, and progressing on our spiritual journeys along with other friends. We both focus on God first and the rest falls into place. The magic wand is love. Rev. A New Vision of Nourishment:

Seven Ways to Feed the Spectrum of You Through Food “If we always do what we’ve always done, we’ll always get what we’ve always gotten.” –Anonymous

A new year means a new vision, which is why many of us create “New Year’s Resolutions.” Popular resolutions typically involve going on a diet or adjusting what we eat or how we live in the hopes of making a breakthrough on a particular goal. But lasting change extends beyond the notion of “going on a diet,” which implies a temporary regimen that we’ll eventually “go off of.” If we continue to see food as a static diet, and not in the broader sense of being a dynamic tool for personal growth, chances are we won’t be led to our inner potential through eating.

Therefore, I am going to challenge you to open your vision of “food” to a larger concept of “nourishment of the whole self,” which I believe will give you more sustainable changes and a renewed, fresh relationship with something as common as eating. Our relationship with food can be broken down into seven aspects of the self. Discover which areas of nourishment may be particularly relevant to you in 2014:

1. Food is grounding Most people have a grounding relationship with food; it provides a way to be fully present in the body. It gives us the energy we need to exist. Our body provides us with the foundation for our entire being to survive in the physical world. How do you connect with your body and listen deeply for its wise messages? Are you tapped into your instinct? How do you create stability in your everyday life so you feel safe enough to make choices that serve your bodily needs?

2. Food is emotion. We have strong feelings about food: what to eat, when to eat, how to eat. Our eating becomes who we are, and, as a result, it can stimulate a wide range of feelings.

Sometimes our feelings are trapped within and when we don’t express them, we turn to our favorite foods for comfort. How can you take the concept of “flow” into by your everyday creativity, allowing your emotions to be fluid and free? Are there ways that you invite a healthy dance between emotions and eating that satisfies you, not your cravings?

3. Food is transformation. Every act of eating represents one of transformation. We take in a food and turn it into our being. Often when we eat, we are not just taking in the food; we may find ourselves taking in the clutter in our mind and in our environment, including the conversations, the hustle-bustle of the

Put your fear to rest once and for all by following these guidelines for how to follow-up without being pushy, annoying or too “salesy.”

Your follow-up system begins while you are still talking with your prospect. As you exchange business cards it is just a common courtesy to look at their card. While looking, you are checking to make sure all contact info is present that you want. You are especially looking for a postal mailing address. If the postal address is not on their card you’ll want to ask the prospect for it. (Make sure you always have something to write on.) Tell them that you have something to mail them that will benefit them and be of value and that is why you are asking. Most folks will readily give you their mailing information.

Step 1 - Enter the contact info in your database: As soon as you get back to your office, clutching the business card of the person you’ve just met – who just might turn out to be your next client – enter their contact information in your database. Your database can be either electronic or on paper. Some folks simply record information on a 3x5 index card. Whatever you use, the information must be easily accessible for you to use.

Do you know of a location where New Spirit Journal should be distributed? Let us know! (425) 356-7237

Step 2 – Send them a warm, personal E-mail. Do not add this person to your e-zine or e-mail marketing list. Remind them of who you are, where the two of you met, the

Step 3 – Mail them a personal note. On your personal note stationery, write them a warm note, similar to what you said in your email. Again, no selling. Don’t ask for a date. You may include your business card if your note does not contain your contact info, but otherwise, it is better to include a gift of some kind. Perhaps a business-card size magnet with a favorite quote on it and your website URL. You do not want to come off as pushy. Also, if you promised to mail them something specific, like a report, or an article or something else, be sure that you do that immediately.

Step 4 – Mail them your print newsletter. A printed and mailed newsletter is still one of the best soft-sell marketing tools you can use to promote your business. It is an ideal way to stay in continual contact with both prospects and clients alike. It will help establish trust and goodwill and newsletters are always appreciated.

Step 5 – Follow them on social media: You do not want to become a stalker, but following your prospect on social media will allow you to learn a great deal about them Continued on Page 8

How to Follow-Up Continued from Page 7 and permit you to engage with them on a different level. In return, they will likely follow you as well. Of course, not everyone is engaged in social media so you’ll likely need to do some research first.

Step 6 – Call them on the phone. This is where most people stop in their followup because they are too afraid to pick up the phone. Again, you are not calling to sell them something. You are calling to connect and to find out in what ways you can help them get more clients themselves or find out what their needs actually are. Common courtesy dictates that they will ask you the same. If they don’t reciprocate this could be an indication of their lack of interest in you. (That’s okay, because now you know. And can decide how you want to continue in your follow-up.)

Step 7 – Invite them to join your e-mailing list.

that the prospect feels for getting their problem solved, you could make the sale almost immediately. The key is to stay in touch on a regular basis. Don’t let them forget who you are. When the time is right for them to buy, you’ll know exactly when to ask. Done right, they’ll likely ask you before you have the chance.

Ask in a personal email (and when I say personal I mean use your regular business e-mail address oneto-one, just as you would send any e-mail to someone, not your autoresponder). Provide a link to your squeeze or landing page at your site and let them opt-in to your list.

Step 8 – Continue to stay in touch. Using a variety of means – like your e-mailing list and your print newsletter, and/or postcards, notes or letters – to be in continual contact with your prospect. Also, pick up the phone and call them when appropriate, and meet them for coffee or lunch when appropriate. Done right – and if the prospect really is ideal for what you offer – you should be able to close the sale within 90-days or less. But, depending on what you offer, and the immediacy

Seven Ways to Feed the Spectrum of You Through Food

Continued from Page 6 others or surprise them with a gift of food. When we make foods with love, we are extending the outreach of our heart and we may get gratitude in return. How can you find even more self-love by serving yourself and others by making nourishing, healthy choices that resonate with your heart?

5. Food is our truth. Speaking our voice about what we eat allows us to be authentically who we are. When we are presented with an array of choices, we have the ability to choose for our highest good, our best self. If we make these congruent choices, we are consistent on our path. How many times are you able to find your voice to speak what is on your heart? Are you open to making choices that will surrender you to an authentic life? By expressing your unique eating truths, you may open up to an expanse of opportunity.

6. Food is mood. What we eat can impact our overall mood, and our

mood can drive our food choices. How do you stay conscious of this rhythmic flow? Are you tuned in to your internal sense of intuition, which can allow you to know what food is good for the type of mood you want to create? We contain all of the wisdom we need when it comes to knowing what is beneficial for us. The goal is to go within to seek this internal wisdom that can transition us from intellect to insight we can harness in every moment.

7. Food is connection. Every bite of food we take represents the web of nature, from the field to the farmer to all the interactions that food had with the natural elements of animals, sun, rainbows, clouds, stars, and moon, and to all of the hands it passed through to make its way onto the fork. There is something special about the act of eating; it is required for our bodily survival and, at the same time, it gives us a pathway to the soul of seeing outside of the constraints of our body and into the eternal landscape of connection. How can you

get more connection in that next bite of food? If you can stay in the mindset of every meal being a miracle, you are on your way to filling yourself with the divine nourishment of connection. Like a kaleidoscope that turns to reveal new patterns and colors, food is an everyday rainbow experience of nourishing the whole self. Opening to Heart-Centered Consciousness By Bente Hansen There is a shift in consciousness occurring worldwide. It is becoming commonplace to hear words or phrases in mainstream communication that once were the considered to be exclusive to the spiritual domain. For example, “live in the moment,” “be in the flow,” “the universe….,” “karma,” “heart consciousness,” etc. The Internet has played a predominant role in providing an increasing amount of written and audio information for this shift. However, there are times when this surplus of information can be confusing and even contradictory. It is easy to be swayed by words or images because they resonate. Then, before too long, exposure to another set of words or images may totally change perception and set up the likelihood of a new set of beliefs. With this overload of information it can become difficult to ascertain what actually has a real basis for consideration or what may be erroneous. So, how is it possible to live with heart-centered consciousness when intellectually we are continually faced with many issues that require deep reflection to resolve them?

Hearts Have Their Own Consciousness The heart, which is a highly complex system, has its own functional “brain.” It communicates information to the brain and throughout the body via electromagnetic field interactions. The electrical component of the heart’s field is about 60 times greater than that produced by the brain, and it permeates every cell, atom and molecule in the body. It does this by pulsing waves of energy that radiate out from the heart and interact with organs and all body systems. It’s been found that emotional states affect heart functioning. For example, sustained positive emotions give rise to a

distinct code of functioning which increases awareness of and sensitivity to others. It’s also likely that the heart field is involved in intuitive functioning.

Shifting to Heart-Centered Consciousness In life we say and direct our energies to where we aspire to be. For example, once there is awareness of the importance of living in the moment then we continually make reference to this. Our language reinforces the fact that we live in the moment. Over time there is a repetition of that energy which builds up so that instead of merely repeating the same words we actually step into the feeling state of living in the moment. The point I’m making is that talking about something is different than feeling it. Yet, in order to step into the feeling state there has to be plenty of talking, which then leads up to the shift of experiencing the feeling state. Once fully immersed in that feeling state it’s virtually impossible to revert back to just talking about a conceptual experience. The concept actually becomes an experience. It is the same with shifting to a state of living with heart-centered consciousness. Lots of talk precedes the feeling state. Once in the heart feeling state there is a huge shift on all levels; physically, mentally, emotionally, energetically, and spiritually. Being in a feeling state and functioning through the heart center ultimately means that there’s no need to constantly engage in thoughts or to even express words. The energy of being in that state takes precedence and anything that does not resonate with this new state of being feels incredibly uncomfortable. Shifting to heart-centered consciousness, however, cannot occur until a great deal of inner work has transpired. This involves healing on all levels in relation to self and others.

In the sessions I conduct I’m emphatic that the energy memories based in the lower three chakras require a lot of healing. When working solely on shifting to heartcentered consciousness without doing the inner work, the result will end up being out of balance. The fear and pain triggers in the lower chakra centers will always manifest, resulting in dissonance and possibly even considerable pain.

Techniques for Shifting These “techniques” are powerful and critical to the process. They are basic and simple, and all too easy to overlook or forget due to life’s issues and pressures. • Give gratitude daily. This is an ongoing process and though what you express gratitude for may change the act of giving gratitude needs to be as ingrained as the act of breathing. When in a true state of living with heart-centered consciousness the expression of gratitude does not require thoughts. It becomes a feeling state and experience. • Live in the moment. Find the technique that works for you. Personally, I prefer the breathing technique taught by the energy of Edgar Cayce. It works for me and I’ve also had feedback from others as to the high degree of efficacy of breath work in creating the now moment.

• Express love daily, and constantly.

Whether it be to nature, body, health, friends, family etc. Expressions of love – whether they be verbal, physical or mental/ emotional – go a long way to creating that feeling state of heart centeredness. • Apply forgiveness to self and others

whenever a situation arises that brings up painful memories. Rather than dwelling on the issue or emotion, mentally affirming “I love myself, I forgive myself” is extremely powerful for shifting the pain

energy. This can also include an additional statement, “I love…, I forgive…” when in relation to others. • Do what you enjoy and gives pleasure. The more you do the things that enthuse and inspire you the greater the reduction of inner stress.

• Let go of toxic situations and people. Sometimes it’s not possible to do

this, so instead I recommend that letting go of the anxiety and stress reduces the level of inner tension. My favorite mantras in this regard are, “This too shall pass,” and, “It is what it is.” This in no way diminishes the nature of the issue or situation. Instead it creates an energetic barrier, distancing you from the situation and allowing greater ease within. • Let go of your story. Most people carry memories of experiences that have been painful. Continually talking about those experiences, remembering them, revisiting the emotions keeps them truly alive and creates an energy trigger that doesn’t abate. I’m not saying ignore or suppress the emotions. Instead, when they surface I’ve found the statement, “I release with love…” to be highly effective in reducing any stored pain. Sometimes that statement needs to be repeated countless times, along with doing forgiveness work, but ultimately is well worth the energy. Most likely you also use a technique or two that work for you. The ultimate outcome of applying these techniques is a shift from thought-centered existence to a heart-centered consciousness, which in turn results in significant enrichment of all life’s experiences. The truly blissful experience of beauty will elude you when you’re harried and stressed or when your whole body feels like a tight knot. Beauty is always present, but to receive it we must be open, expansive, and receptive. We’ve all heard the spiritual teachings that tell us to be present, to slow down, and to open our heart. Yet often, we misinterpret them. For as I see it, their message is not, “Be present and you’ll get enlightened,” or, “Open your heart so you can be more spiritual.” Rather, the true message is this: “Be present, so that beauty will know where to find you. Slow down, so that joy and peace and love can find you.” Every time I lead a retreat for women, I’m struck by the beauty that emerges through them. Their skin becomes softer, their eyes shinier, their movements more fluid. They aren’t getting facials or beauty treatments, they’re just slowing down. They’re connecting deeply with themselves and with Spirit. They’re speaking their truth, quieting their mind, and opening their heart. They’re letting go into the arms of love, and as they do their innate beauty begins to shine through. Unfortunately, our society doesn’t support this. It doesn’t want us to take a step back and look at the bigger picture or ask the bigger questions. Instead, it wants us to keep running, running, running. “Forget about beauty,” it tells us. “You don’t have time. You have too much to do.” And so, we worship at the altar of Chronos, the cruel Greek god of time who devoured his children. But where Chronos rules, Beauty makes herself scarce. She far prefers the company of Chairos, who represents sacred time, time out of time. Standing on the threshold between the worlds, she welcomes us into a realm of infinite abundance and mystery. And as we enter, we realize that no matter how long we have lived under the spell of Chronos, this other realm is in fact our true home. Our souls are starving for the nourishment that only beauty can provide. Let us therefore shed our addiction to efficiency and speed and recognize her as the great goddess she truly is. Let us invoke her, invite her, embrace and celebrate her, each in our own way, so that our lives might be healed and blessed by her sweet presence. Invite Beauty Into Your life:

Try This:

Sit down in a quiet place with pen and paper. Ask yourself: “What are some ways in which I could invite beauty into my life?” Write down whatever ideas you come up with. You might want some fresh flowers. You might take a simple activity like putting on your clothes, and do it with complete mindfulness, so that it becomes an act of beauty. You might want to clean up a closet that has been neglected for too long, or to go for a slow, leisurely walk. Now, chose one practice to which you’re willing to commit. Notice what happens as a result. No judgment, no self-criticism, just witness your process with deep kindness and compassion.

How Much is That Doggie in the Window? Okay, maybe you have some holiday money to spend and you want to buy a dog, or perhaps your New Year’s resolution is to add a dog to your family. You know that you want to get a purebred dog rather than a mixed breed. You also know that you do not want to go through a purebred rescue group and you want to pick and raise a puppy. So, how do you know where to go to do that? Before I answer that question, I want to say that for the purpose of writing this particular column and the limited space, I am assuming that you know there are tons of unwanted dogs both mixed and purebred waiting for forever homes in shelters, rescues and foster care all over the place. But for whatever reason – and I will tell you that there are some good reasons for this – you have decided that you want a purebred puppy from a good breeder. I am also assuming here that you know what breed of dog you want. In addition to knowing what breed you want, it is also important to know what you will be doing with the dog. Do you want a hunting companion? Maybe you want a conformation dog that can be shown for titles and eventually bred. You might want a dog for agility fun or competition. You may want a dog for any one of a number of other dog sports like tricks, rally, obedience, tracking, nose work, fly ball, dock diving or Frisbee competition, just to name a few. Perhaps you want a dog that could do several of those sports seriously or just for fun. It is also possible you want a dog to simply run and play with you and your family. You might want a watch or protection dog. Some may want a dog that could become a service dog for them. Others may just want a couch potato for companionship. I think you are getting my point here. There are many, many different reasons why we want dogs. Not every breed is suited to do everything. And within a breed that is suited for what you want, some may not be bred for that purpose. For example, if you want a hunting dog and a Labrador retriever, it would be good to buy from a field trial or hunting breeder. If you want a lab that is a good easygoing family dog, that would not be a good breeder to buy from. It would be better to buy from someone who is breeding for temperament, obedience, and conformation. Once you know what you want to do or not do with your dog and you know what breed you want, you can begin your search to find

How Much is That Doggie in the Window? Continued from Page 11 find a good breeder. I have stopped people on the street when I liked their dog to ask where they got it. When you buy from a breeder, make sure it is one you can visit to check out the environment in which the puppies will be born and raised. You also need to be able to meet Mom and Dad too, if possible. Get references and check them out. If the environment or situation does not feel good to you, do not buy a puppy there, no matter how much you want one. I got my “very best dog in the whole wide world,” as I tell him everyday,

through a Craigslist ad. I drove all the way over to a small town on the Olympic Peninsula to check it out. They did not show or title their dogs, but they were knowledgeable and did do their due diligence with breed certifications and were very responsible. They were a very nice family with young kids, another dog, and a cat. The puppies were being raised in their kitchen and they even offered to crate train my pup in my crate before I picked him up. Perfect for what I wanted my puppy to experience as a youngster. Equally important, I had to pass their requirements to

qualify to buy one of their puppies. It is very important to avoid puppy mill situations at all costs. I do not recommend buying puppies from websites out of your area. Anyone can create a beautiful website but unless you can visit and check them out in person, buyer beware. If you find a breeder out of your area who offers to meet you halfway when they sell you a puppy, this is also a serious red flag. What don’t they want you to see? With a very rare exception, I say do not buy puppies from pet stores. Responsible breeders do not

sell their puppies through pet stores. Most pet store puppies are puppy mill puppies, no matter what they tell you. Ask to see the paperwork on the puppy and if the breeder is listed out of state, especially the Midwest states and Oregon, it is a puppy mill. We even have puppy mill operations in our state now, so go check it out and remember what I just said about responsible breeders. Now Is Our Time By Jerry Gay (According to Jerry Gay, the first part of this article was given to him by Ashtar, supreme commander of The Inner Galactic Council. –Editor)

“Every life form is one thought in the mind of The Source of Life, on earth most often referred to as God. The year 2014 will open human consciousness to spiritual revelations revealing the triune reality of sacred universal precepts that are now fully evolving: The New World Order, The Paradigm Shift and The Second Coming. These are related thought processes being personalized in each soul’s unique consciousness now. “The New World Order is a recognition that each male and female of every nationality is interrelated eternally. “The Paradigm Shift brings the supreme importance of environmental qualities being seen as spiritual values.

“The Second Coming is the renewed reality revealing each person to be The Christ of their earth life purpose. “As societal media and entertainment variations begin to reformulate these concepts, you will personalize their orchestrated revelations into your internal perceptions visualizing new ideas to recreate each person’s duality. “Political, religious, racial and sexual ideologies will now acknowledge the importance of each person in reality. “Everyone will begin working together recreating images of our shared reality in the mind of The Source of Life by refocusing all spiritual visualizations and societal perceptions with reverence, respect and responsibility. “Welcome to seeing a world that we all create by being the best we can and living together peacefully now.”

The Inner Galactic Council is an alternative spiritually aligned group of multidimensional souls creating love. Over the years I have gained much from my higher-self relationship with Ashtar. He has given many insights and perceptions in regard to my photographic endeavors as well as my personal ventures and spiritual goals. The most important aspect of these times of support and assessments is that now we all see the opportunity for everyone to have an inner-connection with their higher self. Our higher-self relationships are reflective of the spiritual conversations with relationships featured in the classic movies Field of Dreams and Star Wars. With all of this said, the triune reality is putting our best spiritual foot forward to see the best we can in all of our endeavors and relationships. We are encouraged to follow through by creating our own sense of new reality and helping others do so as well. Here are some ideas how to apply these thoughts in our daily lives: The New World Order creates an ability to see the best in ourselves and others. Now we understand the relevance of the person holding a “help me” sign on a street corner. We accept our own life challenges to be our personal journey and no longer feel guilty or embarrassed by our unique circumstance. Now everyone of us is divinely guided by the inner voice of our higher-self creating our own solutions and influencing others by our example. When we help others we show we are all one family and we change reality one

step at a time. The Paradigm Shift widens our sense of responsibility to support local and global environmental issues with our personal lifestyle and actions to create sacredness for vulnerable outdoor natural settings and wild animal habitations. In most basic concepts we must encourage all of society to pick up after ourselves when we are outdoors. This includes paper scraps, coffee cups, soda cans and cigarette butts, as well as household junk. Our thoughts of self-control must be advocated in our educational and religious teachings and news media. The Second Coming is teaching the true message of Jesus who encouraged all souls to personally emulate being the best we can in our lives. His thinking extends beyond religious philosophy into the universal reality. Simply stated, we must personally respect our unique sense of who we are. By our doing so, we then will see that our actions do speak louder than our words. Now our daily challenge is to stop, look, and listen to what is really going on around us and what our higher-self is telling us and then to be our very best we can. Author’s note: To personally affirm higherself relationship insight: Ashtar assisted me when I drove across America over three summers discovering situations and observations for my visualized spiritual guidebook Seeing Reality.

Continued from Back Page gives lots of information that helps sort out facts from fiction. Options of dieting for 16 hours a day, skipping breakfast or dinner, or of having a pattern of fasting for two days a week and eating normally the other days are given. There is more of a nutrition-based approach and the book offers four meal plans as well as 100 recipes, questionnaires to help select the plan right for you, and scientific research showing the health benefits of fasting. The author feels this is the weight-loss technique of the future and it is being adopted by some people worldwide. With all this talk about food and eating,

let’s remember to give thanks for our food by using The Grateful Table, Blessings, Prayers and Graces for the Daily Meal by Brenda Knight. A beautiful hardcover book, there are 365 days of thankfulness offered by people known and unknown, various traditions, and cultures. Some are short, others a little longer. All of them feed the soul while being grateful for feeding the body.

Meaningful Stories We all love stories and when they also teach great lessons or ideas, we love them even more. I’ll Meet You at the Base of the Mountain by Donna Visocky tells the tragic story of how the author’s daughter died in a car accident and how this led to a complete change of life for Visocky. Not only did she begin a serious spiritual journey, she began Bella Spark Productions and BellaSpark Magazine which led her to meet and work with some of today’s best-known spiritual teachers. Anyone who faces the death of a loved one will find this book a consolation as well as a guidebook to deep spiritual opening. Luck, Religon,Boundaries, and Crystals How to Attract Good Luck: And Make the Most of it in Your Daily Life by A.H.Z. Carr was originally published in 1952. It is one of the oldest decks, dating back to the mid-15th century, and was commissioned by Filippo Maria Visconti, Duke of Milan.
