HealYour Emotions FREE

& Free Your Energy By Adam Dreamhealer

Emotions are feelings associated with thoughts and memories. The impact of negative emotions tends to settle like a logjam in a stream and block your energy flow. The issues around which this energy block occurs, and the size of the blockage, differs in each of us. We all have our own unique blockages. Identify the feeling that shows up for you when you accumulate stress or the emotion that you express as a physical symptom. For example, what is your first physical reaction to a crisis? Do you get an instant headache, backache, stomachache or the proverbial pain in the neck? In your mind’s eye, see the logjam of your emotional reactions and set your intention to burst the dam in order for the natural healing stream to flow. It is important to become aware of the impact that habitual emotional reactions from your past have that you carry forward with you. Learn how to identify these reactions, leaving no emotional stone unturned. Note that some emotions are based on repetitions of fragmented ideas with no apparent solutions. Some issues tend to replay over and over again, like a tape loop. Anger can eat away at us. What unresolved issue do you often revisit with anger? Does any of your anger involve blaming others? In doing so, you give them power over you. Choose to empower yourself instead of at those with whom you are angry. Do you feel guilt about any of your behaviors, or about decisions from your past? Three Strategies to Strengthen Your Imagination By Mary Lee LaBay

good foundation. What is desired, though, is to expand that basic skill into something grander and more adventuresome. Why do we need to do that? Simply put, this is the foundational ingredient for increasing intuition, expanding consciousness, communicating with spirit guides, recalling past lives, planning your future, experiencing deep healing, and manifesting your dreams. If you want any of those things, you will want to strengthen your imagination. Here are three strategies to expand and exercise the imagination:

Interestingly, people often say they don’t have an imagination. True, it may be underdeveloped or stifled. However, everyone has an imagination. Without it, we would be unable to communicate at all. How would you rate your imagination? Is there room for improvement? Please read on to learn a few strategies for improving your own imagination. If you watch children playing, it is easy to see free and boundless use of imagination. So what happens to us that we let that slip away? From my clinical practice I have learned there are many factors in the loss of imagination. A primary one is that it falls into disuse as emphasis is placed on studying, memorizing, and learning about the world from teachers and parents. Other causes that my clients have shared include being punished or ridiculed, being told that imagination isn’t real, being lazy (being highly imaginative does take energy), and that it is a waste of time (and that would be shameful). While most of us are not frequently engaged in outlandish and creative imaginings, we do use our imaginations all the time. We must, just to navigate our world. As an example, when your dining companion says, “Pass the ketchup,” you reach out, grab the ketchup, and hand it to the person. Are you curious what that has to do with imagination?

Practice creative visualization Listen to guided visualization tapes and CDs. Rather than being passive in the process, encourage your mind to really embellish the journey, adding details, emotions, curiosity, and surprises. Visualization tapes and CDs are widely available from your favorite book and music sources. Some libraries have them available at no charge. Your mind perceived the request, and then drew up a mental picture of something that would represent ketchup out of your memory banks. You looked around and found a duplicate image that matched closely enough to be identifiable, perhaps sitting right in front of you on the table. Then your mind went on to imagine the act of grabbing the bottle and handing it over to your friend. Finally, your body executed the action. There are many more steps that the brain instantaneously goes through in order to achieve such a simple act, which are beyond the scope of this article. However, the point is that we are using our imaginations on a daily basis. We all have an imagination, and that is a

“Being in a float tank is like relaxing in outer space.”

Make up stories Practice writing fictional stories with outlandish characters and environments. Allow the story to go beyond all possibility of reason or reality. The wilder it is the better. Remember there are no limitations and no judgments concerning style in this exercise. Volunteer to tell stories to your children, nieces and nephews, or grandchildren. You may even have to borrow a child from one of your friends. It can be great fun and you may become the children’s hero for delighting them with your flights of fancy. Naturally, you will keep your stories ageappropriate.

Read fantasy fiction Reading science fiction stories requires a fertile imagination. This genre of tales involves descriptions of characters, landscapes, vehicles, machinery, and adventures that have rarely, if ever, been seen or experienced in this world. Some people consider reading science fiction a waste of time. In reality, it can be a valuable exercise in expanding the imagination. Imagination is one of the most important tools we possess. What can you do each day to exercise that skill? Living The Good Life

As I read the list of questions, I felt worse and worse about myself. I lead a pretty good life and do most of the things that I am “supposedâ€? to do. But, hey, I am far from perfect and I am painfully aware of areas needing my attention. I don’t need someone having me grade myself on whether or not I have dimmer switches in my dining room and bathroom as if this somehow makes me a better person (yes to the dining room and no to the bathroom). Don’t get me wrong. I think it is a great idea to take stock of where we are in our lives because this helps us stay pointed in the right direction. What is important, though, is how we feel about our lives and ourselves. How we feel has a great impact on what we create in our lives. If we feel negative about ourselves and our world, we will tend to create more negativity. There is a fine line between having a commitment to bettering ourselves and beating ourselves up because we are not the person our dog thinks we are. This month we celebrate the day of love, Valentine’s Day. Love is something we can’t live without and the more we share it with ourselves and others, the better our lives can be. Loving others begins with having respect and love for ourselves. Just like we can’t give with an empty purse, we can’t love with a closed heart. A good way to be in sync with love energy is by starting a new way of feeling about ourselves. Here are some ideas of ways to help you feel better, more loving, kinder, and expansive. Then share those feelings with other people in your world. 1. Sit down and make a list of all the things that are right about yourself and your life. Your mind will throw up all sorts of “Yeah, buts,â€? wanting to remind you that you are not perfect. Just tell it you know you are not perfect and keep writing down the things that are working for you. 2. Affirm. Some people might think it is a clichĂŠ, but this affirmation has helped thousands of people improve their lives by telling their subconscious to get with the program: “Every day in every way I am getting better and better.â€? Do this regularly and out loud and before long you will see it as true in your life. 3. Find time to be creative daily. Whether it is something small like a craft project or something big like writing a book or building a workshop, opening the channels

Dreams allow us to fly; they lift our spirits by showing us the possibilities of our lives. Spend some time every day just dreaming about your life and how it can be. 6. Are you sharing yourself and your talents with others? Get out of the competitive frame of mind and more into the cooperative way of thinking. Are you volunteering somewhere? Do you share your knowledge and skills freely? 7. How focused are you? It doesn’t feel good to scatter our energies. If you find yourself wandering from task-to-task, jobto-job, or teacher-to-teacher, stop. Choose one and focus on it long enough to make a difference in your life. Imagine if someone drilling for water kept pulling up the drill and starting over in a new location every half-hour. They would never drill deep enough to find the water, would they? 8. Where is your passion? What gets you so fired up that you lose track of time when you’re doing it? That’s your passion. Do it more and watch yourself bloom. Continued on Page 7

Automatic Writing? Intuitive Writing! By Linda Zeppa In the last few months many people have talked to me about “automatic” writing. They want to write but don’t know where to start. They have been told that they are writers or are meant to be writers and just want to do it now. They want to learn how to “automatic” write. “Teach me how to automatic write,” they say. Here is my reply. While I refer here to writing, this also applies to all areas of opening and awakening, channeling, artistry, music, dancing, and so on. There is no magic switch that turns the supply of words and writing on and off. There is not one button or key to push, like that of an automatic dishwasher, washing machine, car. And it is different for everyone. The supply is always there within you. It is the energy of you and all about you in the spiritual world. It is always available to you, available to be released in the manner and speed that you wish to do so. Yes, sometimes it will feel automatic. Something – an incident, a sight, a sound, a smell – will trigger it and with a pen/ pencil/keyboard close by, information or a

story will suddenly come through. It is with awareness, allowing, and practicing that this will continue. Teaching and learning does not come from an external source. You must look within, acknowledge the energy there, and allow it to flow. With writing, the flow is through the communication center (the throat chakra), through the shoulders, down the arms, and out the fingers. It is by going within that you get comfortable with the essence and the energy of yourself, and then you can allow whatever to flow out. You are putting into physical form what lies within. Nothing is too stupid, and lots will flow out that doesn’t make sense in the outside world, or to everyone. It doesn’t matter. Let it flow anyway. Have no expectations. Allow yourself to be surprised. Allow yourself to acknowledge what you already know inside. Sometimes an emotion will flow out. Let it out and release it. Use any language that you wish… even the words that you never allow yourself to speak. Sometimes a story will flow out, from this lifetime or from a past life or from someone else. Don’t be overwhelmed with the length, emotion, idea of it. Just get out what needs and wants to be out. Allow it.

Poems, messages, ideas, perhaps lessons that we don’t physically want to acknowledge… the essence of you, the energy, the spirit of you coming forth. It doesn’t always have to be serious. Deep down we can be fun as well as serious. So for me and for those that I have had the pleasure to work with, the switch to writing is the choice that you make to allow your energy to flow outward into physical form. No one can “teach” you that. The energy is there. The “teaching” part is guidance, offering exercises, triggers, information, meditation, etc. to assist you to open and allow the flow. It is your choice to accept and allow. It is your choice to follow your intuition. And yes, sometimes it is hard work as we are prompted to write, write, write. Rather than automatic, I prefer to use “intuitive” writing. It is gentler, allowing, opening, and it is always there. It is writing from your source, your energy and that of spirit. It is all part of your journey, awakening and developing. It goes beyond writing and beyond automatic. As well as being a writer, I allow myself to be a guide and teacher. I somehow know what to present to people to trigger and open their flow. The triggers are often simple exercises; relaxation and meditation are key. I am constantly aware of the words of Kahil Gibran from his book The Prophet: “If he is indeed wise he does not bid you enter the house of his wisdom, but rather leads you to the threshold of your own mind.”

The bonus for me is that by encouraging others on their path, I am encouraged on mine. As we move into a new year, become aware of the triggers and clues. Find and work with a guide or coach. Meditate. Begin to or continue to develop your intuition, to open the flow and allow words, music, art, creativity or whatever shows the essence of the true you, to flow out. Linda Zeppa is a writer, an educator, an intuitive development coach and guide, a writing coach and guide and editor. She offers classes, workshops and private sessions in writing and creativity, personal and intuitive development, and works privately with clients from around the world in all of these areas. A Beautiful Mind Continued from Back took on a meaning for me in that moment that I had not gotten in the 18 years I had been listening to it. I released and completely let go of everything I thought I knew, wanted or needed. I knew that all I needed was to reconnect on a deeper level than I’ve experienced before with the universe. I refused to make one more phone call or send out one more e-mail until I was grounded in the awareness of one power, one presence, and one life, and that this one power contained within it all my good. Was this hard? From an ego perspective, yes. If I surrender totally to God, am I gonna get my stuff? Am I gonna get what I want if I surrender? Well, I certainly had nothing to lose, because doing it my way wasn’t getting me my stuff. So, I committed to 40 days of prayer/ meditation/journaling and turning away from every appearance (illusion) of struggle, lack, and limitation. Understanding that in God or universal presence, there is no such thing as struggle, sickness, lack, or hardship; there is only good. So, every time I’d feel fear or doubt I would consciously and resolutely turn away from it, saying to the illusion, “You’re not real. You are an illusion trying to pull my attention away from that which is real. You’re trying to keep me stuck in an old worn out paradigm. No, you cannot have me.” And then I would recenter myself. This reminds me of the movie A Beautiful Mind, where Russell Crowe was suffering from schizophrenia. He had created out of this illness his best friend from college, his best friend’s niece (a seven-year-old little girl), and a CIA agent that made him believe he was on a secret mission. This illusion wreaked absolute havoc in his life. He lost his job and was on the verge of losing his wife and child. But mostly, he lost his mind

Reiki in Seattle REIKI CIRCLE

to his belief in something that wasn’t real. He had a turning point one day when at his lowest moment, he almost drowned his baby because the illusions he suffered from directed him to do so. That was the last straw for his wife. She put the baby in the car and attempting to drive away, when he jumped in front of the car and said to his wife, “She never grows old, the little girl. She never gets any older. She’s been seven years old for 10 years.” It had finally clicked for him that his friend, the little girl, and the CIA agent were not real, and that he had been basing his life on illusion instead of reality all that time. That is the truth for many of us isn’t it, we react from the false beliefs in fear, doubts, and uncertainties instead of living our lives from wholeness, love, harmony, and peace. In the movie, Russell Crowe made a decision to heal himself by not taking anymore medication, and by acknowledging the illusions when they arose, but not give them any power, ever again. One of the last times the friend, little girl, and the CIA agent showed up, he bent down to kiss the little girl on the cheek saying to her, “I will miss you, but I will never speak to you again.” The more he ignored the illusions when they appeared and kept his attention on what was real, the illusions started to fade into the background. He not only started to live a normal life, he started to thrive. You now have this golden opportunity in this moment, right now to turn away from the illusions of fear, doubt and uncertainty. They are not your friends and they mean no good. Of course, acknowledge them when they crop up, but refuse to hang out with them anymore; refuse to negotiate with that which is not real and reclaim your divine inheritance as an expression of the divine. When we do this, and the illusions start to fade away, we can truly say, wow, life really

Growing Beyond Isolation An interview with Larry Dossey, MD by Craig Weiner, DC

Recently, I had the privilege of reading the newly released book One Mind: How Our Individual Mind Is Part of a Greater Consciousness and Why It Matters and interviewing its author, Larry Dossey, MD. Dossey is one of the foremost experts on mind-body-spirit healing and is the author of The Power of Premonitions, Healing Words and 10 others. In One Mind, he explores both the scientific and the personal: stories, anecdotes, research from his own life and career as well as those told by some of the world’s greatest philosophers, physicists and poets. One Mind is a book about the inter-connectedness of all beings, of an infinite consciousness that is beyond space-time and accessible to all sentient beings. It is the place where mind, energy, quantum laws, and non-local healing come together in one matrix continuum. Craig: Larry, Why this book and why now? Larry: I guess I could call it an autobiography, because there’s so much personal stuff in there. I wanted to get a lot of things out on the table and in print, things that have been gestating for decades. This is my twelfth book, and it is a summation of the things that I began to write about as early as the 1980s, when my first book, Space, Time & Medicine was written. It’s sort of

an update on everything that’s happened in my life and my journey and my path up until the present time. Craig: This is not a new concept, it has been around for thousands of years. Do you think that there is a new receptivity out there for your cosmic soup concept? Larry: For me, the one mind is a way that consciousness has of manifesting when it goes beyond any confinable limit. When one mind appears to be without boundaries and behaves in a way where you clearly can’t put it in a box and keep it there, then it appears to be boundless and without any demarcations. If that is so, then it makes sense that in some dimension, the individual minds come together and form a connected unity in which all minds participate. This is what we see with consciousness. The entire book is devoted to exploring not just people’s experiences of being united and at one with everything, which is probably the most generic mystical experience in the history of the human race, but also this one mind idea comes out of an increasing number of experiments that have been done over the years which show that there are no boundaries to consciousness. Craig: How can we bring this big idea to a more personal level? Larry: I think everybody has either experienced a one mind moment or is on the verge of it. Today, I received an e-mail from an airline pilot who flies commercial jets, and he told me about his one mind moment. He said that he was minding his own business, reading a book, and all of a sudden, he had what sounds like many people call an epiphany. He said all of a sudden, he just felt himself getting really warm all over, and he felt this sense of being connected with everything there was in the universe. And airline pilots

aren’t noted for being very woo-woo and undisciplined. He said this was one of the most majestic experiences he’s ever had in his life. It’s a classic one mind experience. These things usually happen to people who are quite healthy, not to people who are having near-death experiences. So the one mind moment is just the sense of being at one with all there is. There’s something else that this pilot said which is classic. This sense of being connected with everything is usually marinated in a sense of profound love and compassion. So there you have it. There are a million iterations and nuances of this, but that’s basically the skeleton of what a one mind experience is. Craig: What is your greatest hope that happens as a result of this book’s publication? In his new book, One Mind, Dr. Larry Dossey Larry: I hope people can explores the experience of being united in learn to go beyond the isolation consciousness with everything else, as well as of the individual. The reason I experiments that show that there are no say that is because unless we boundaries to consciousness. learn to do that, I think we’re sunk on this planet. It requires some shift nothing of helping us stay alive on this planin the way we conceive who we are. 9. How often do you let yourself play? People who want to better their lives tend to be a bit too serious. Be sure you plan time for play in your life. Sometimes an hour spent laughing and being silly can release all sorts of pent up energy and allow us to do more with our day than we thought possible. 10. See yourself as brilliant because you are. When we acknowledge our brilliance, we feel great about ourselves and then even more brilliance comes forth. Whether your brilliance shows itself as ideas, personality

traits, or physical abilities of some kind, praise your brilliance and let it shine so the rest of us can enjoy it too. Happy Valentine’s! Krysta is publisher of New Spirit Journal. on modifying or eliminating them. Identify what triggers habitual negative emotions in you. What or who reinforces your negative thoughts and emotions about events? How can you change them? Think about what your healthier modified responses would be to any situation that causes you stress. For instance, do you harbor unresolved issues with anger, guilt, or blame? Think about your own personal history that has created these energy-draining feelings. You have habitually placed yourself in this vulnerable position. Now think about how you are going to move beyond this barrier that you have constructed for yourself. Know your trigger, or what sets you off into your automatic habitual response. Instead of the trigger sending you to an emotionally vulnerable space, empower yourself by creating a new response to the old trigger reflex response. Reprogram yourself to react differently when this trigger occurs. Visualize how you will more positively react with your situation.

Rehearse what you are going to do and when you are going to do it. See yourself in your mind’s eye as you become proactive by positively creating your reaction to events, hence your feelings and thoughts. Change the way you view yourself and you change the events of your past, present and future. You will have truly empowered yourself. We receive many books for possible review each month. It is challenging to choose which ones to highlight and we make our decisions based on which ones we think will be of greatest interest to most of our readers. During the month, some books are featured on our Facebook page: New Spirit Journal. Two well-known and well-loved authors just came out with very different books. Dr. Wayne W. Dyer shares his life story with us in I Can See Clearly Now (Hay House) while Marianne Williamson gives us a book of daily devotions and reflections, A Year of Miracles (HarperOne). In his memoir, Dr. Dyer does much more than just share his life story. Anyone who has read one of his 40 books or listened to his seminars knows he is generous in sharing stories about himself. He goes much further here by not only sharing stories from his life, but then telling us what he learned from the episodes through the vantage point of his current life wisdom. It is fascinating to learn more about his life, but even more than that, the reader is encouraged to look at his or her own life in the same way in order to glean the precious

life lessons that have taken us to where we are today. This is an informative and inspirational book fans will love. Leave it to Marianne Williamson to take the principles of love and weave them into a year of inspiring ideas and prayers. The goal is to help us shift our thinking and thereby change not only our own reality but that of the world around us. Through daily spiritual readings, prayers, meditations, declarations and affirmations she gives us guidance and support to focus our thinking. A Year Of Miracles can be a daily friend to anyone because it is not based on any one teaching, belief, or organization. Findhorn Press sent us four small but powerful books this month. Twelve Essential Healing Crystals and Gem Water, both by Michael Gienger will be of interest to professional healers as well as to those working on issues of self-healing. In the first, he gives us a “pocket pharmacy for common ailments.” The book focuses on 12 stones that can help with issues such as allergies, rashes, headaches, pain, and healing wounds. There are beautiful full color photos as well as a ton of information packed into a small, easy-to-hold-and-use paperback book. You will want to keep this on hand after studying it for basic information. In Gem Water, the author, along with co-author Joachum Geobel, explains how to prepare and use more than 130 crystal waters for therapeutic treatments. Dos and don’ts are given as well as some actual recipes and mixtures along with their effects. Again, beautiful color photos enhance the book throughout.

I found the book Let Your Body Speak, The Essential Nature of Our Organs, by Ewald Kliegel, with illustrations by Anne Heng, fascinating. The various organs of our bodies channel messages and drawings that help us understand better their purpose and what they need from us to function fully. Learn to communicate with and listen to your bladder, blood, pancreas, and kidneys in order to enjoy better health and spiritual realizations. Don’t wait to get sick to communicate with your organs. Do it now and realize your life’s potential. If decluttering is on your to-do list, Be An Angel, Clear that Clutter, by Jacky Newcomb could be your new best friend. Using humor and stories of her own decluttering processes, this little book is full of ways to get started and continue on the journey of letting go of what we don’t need and organizing what we decide to keep. Secret hoarders and just-a-little-messy folks will find what they need to make permanent changes in how they deal with “stuff.” Do you procrastinate getting things done or do you simply use delays when it is wise to do so? In Solving the Procrastination Puzzle (Tarcher/Penguin), Timothy Pychyl, Ph. D. explains what procrastination is, why we sabotage our own best intentions, and gives clear and wellresearched strategies to help us change. If procrastinating is keeping you from doing the things you want and need to do, don’t procrastinate: get this book, read it, and use it. Loved and Protected, Stories of Miracles

apply principles to our lives. With headings such as “Use the right tools for the job,” “When pulling up weeds, get the root,” and “Fiercely guard the seedlings,” this book is insightful, practical, and entertaining. Lion of Light, The Spiritual Life of Madame Blavatsky by Gordon Strong (Axis Mundi Books) is fascinating as it gives a lot of history surrounding the Theosophical Society and the writing of some of the books considered bedrock in the study of spirituality. There are a lot of stories and myth surrounding the life of the enigmatic Blavatsky. I’m not sure this book ends any of the myths but it sure makes an interesting read. The Council of Light, Divine Transmissions for Manifesting the Deepest Desire of the Soul by Danielle Rama Hoffman (Inner Traditions) is based on work the author has done with what she calls “an intergalactic group of thousands of light beings from across the multiverse.” These teachings cover all aspects of life from health to wealth and relationships and offers practical meditations, written, spoken, energetic, and breathwork exercises to enhance well-being and create more joy. Yoga Reviews by Ronan Bennett

Banyan & Bo by Gaiam Continued from Page 8

Earth Saver Yoga Mat This is an odd review for me to write regarding the flagship and trusted name of Gaiam in the U.S. Yoga world. Unrolling the mat for first time use, it appeared cushy, supportive and surprisingly thin, which is what I expect from Gaiam: innovation and taking equipment to the next level for the practicing yogi. I love the feel of the mat. Its thin profile allows for a lot more room inside my Marrakesh Bag. This is especially important when traveling. However, I was shocked when, about 20 minutes into my class, I felt my hands and feet slip from perspiration. I am a yoga teacher, and the teacher leading the class noticed my recovery and rushed over to see what was wrong. I wiped the mat off with my yoga towel and kept going. I slipped again right away. At this point, I switched mats and continued class. The teacher and I both examined the mat afterward and decided to wash it down and try again. Well, yesterday’s class gave me the same experience. Now, as an experienced yoga practitioner and RYT, I was able to recover quickly from slipping. However, as an RYT, I would not recommend this mat for my students, and I hope to not see one in class. There’s no sugar coating this one: I think this mat is way too slippery to trust. Perhaps with Gaiam socks and gloves it would work, or even a yoga mat towel, but that’s an extra step that this “no slip” mat is supposed to circumvent.

Natural Cork Block

Gaiam Sol This soft all natural cork block will be a great addition to the yoga practitioner’s “tool box.” This block is stable and feels comfortable in the hands. It is easy to grip and does not slide around on the floor or flex when one puts their weight on it. Even with my tight hamstrings, I was able to use this block to go from a standing “T” to a full crow without any trouble. This block also works well for the beginning and yin type classes. It feels nice when holding a supported bridge or even a supported fish pose.

The strap will also adjust and fit around the arms to offer support and stability for those challenging hand balance poses. This strap fits nicely in the bag along with the cork block for the warm up, the desire to take the pose deeper, and those wonderful cool-down release poses we all look forward to.

Nutrition vs. Nourishment “When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened for us.” – Helen Keller

I find myself looping back to a conversation with a friend of mine, whom I will call Amy, which occurred over the past months. It was an exchange about how she was riddled with all kinds of health complaints, most of which were arthritic in nature. The symptoms were increasing in severity to the extent that she was going to have to take time off of work due to the excruciating pain. Being a nutritionist, I naturally asked her what she ate. She listed a number of foods, revealing some top food allergens like dairy and glutencontaining grains. In fact, just about every meal was punctuated by one or both of these foods. Since she knows my profession, she didn’t seem to be entirely surprised when I mentioned to her that she may want to try changing her eating for a short while to see what would happen to her pain. My voice quickened as I relayed to her the many instances of patients I’ve seen with different forms of arthritis who had a resolution of their complaints after removing foods they were intolerant of or allergic to, including my own experience with psoriatic arthritis and eating gluten. I discussed some alternatives and options for her if she chose to replace dairy- and grain-containing foods so she didn’t feel lost without what had become to be staples for her, and suggested that maybe she could go slowly in weaning off of these items. After about a week’s time, I saw Amy again and excitedly fired out a barrage of questions, “How is your pain? Did you give up gluten? Did you let go of the dairy?” She

shook her head and sheepishly proclaimed, “I just can’t give up those foods. I love having milk in my coffee, and I especially love my cheezzzz.” My heart sank. In an instant, the familiar wisdom flashed through my head, “The foods we most crave are the ones that are most likely keeping us unhealthy.” I pleaded to her saying, “Are you sure you don’t want to give it a try? What if your pain lessens and you can work again? It’s only one week’s worth of experimentation to potentially give you a life back and prevent you from having to take off a week. Aren’t you worth it?” She lightly shook her head indicating that she had closed the door on this one. The entire conversation had me thinking more deeply on what was preventing her from letting go of certain foods. Why was she letting her symptoms control her rather than taking charge of her health? My head was enrobed in a ribbon of unending questions. What held her back? She was fairly young and relatively nimble in her life without a stressful job or family to make the shift more difficult. Was I not convincing enough? Was it a lack of faith that the oneweek exercise would give results or that it would give results that she didn’t want to embrace? After all, on the other side of a lifestyle change is the potentially looming big downside in that it could turn into a lifetime of incorporating change if someone finds out that there is an issue that can be reconciled through what they eat or how they live. How many people really want to know that there could be the hint of taking something out of their eating for a lifetime? Now that is surely a big leap. But isn’t the reward equally great if not greater?

Nutrition for Body & Soul by Deanna Minich, PhD, CN, RYT

I’m reminded of the Helen Keller quote, where we are so fixated on the closed door that we do not see the open door of possibilities awaiting us. I’ll call those possibilities optimal health, better function, less pain, and a new life. If it’s not a lack of faith, could it be a lack of love? What if we scrutinized every scenario in our lives from the lens of love? For example, what do we love more: soft, rich cheese or rigid hip bones? Toasted bread with butter or flexible fingers? It may not be faith or discipline in our eating regimen, but how much we are willing to love ourselves fully and completely where we have only to choose that which is best for us, which may include venturing into risk and the unknown. I am brought back to the idea that the most difficult lessons in life are to develop self-esteem and self-love as foundational cornerstones of our existence. Maybe there is a glimmer of these lessons here when sitting at the crossroads of a pending lifestyle change. While I don’t believe that self-love deficiency is the ultimate root of every symptom, I think it’s a good idea to investigate the terrain of the heart, and have an honest look at the reasons behind our

choices and to know our values. If I mentioned to this person that they had a nutrition deficiency, would she have acted differently? After all, in the nutrition field, if we are having symptoms, we assess the spectrum of deficiencies: protein deficiency, vitamin deficiency, mineral deficiency, and more. Several people feel confident enough to tackle a nutrient deficiency head-on. Is a nutritional deficiency easier to address than a deficiency in “nourishment?” While nutrition gives sustenance to the body, nourishment involves the whole self: our emotions, ego, heart, voice, intuition, and soul. Doesn’t one tie together? If our bodies are deficient, how can our souls carry out their mission? If our souls are longing for nourishment, the body may deliver its signs through symptoms and conditions. I am posing more questions than answers, but there can be a lot of “gray” when it comes to looking for answers to our health or what motivates us to change. We might need a tandem approach to exploring both the nutritional and nourishment aspects of diseases, as we hunt for both deficiencies and excesses, aiming for that state of blissful balance. Deanna Minich, PhD, CN, RYT, is a mind-body-spirit nutritionist and author who bridges together modern science with ancient spirituality in her novel approach to food and eating. Grow Your Business With An Effective Content Marketing

shared across the various social media available.

Content is king. That’s an old cliché for a reason: it’s true. As a soul proprietor and in keeping with your need to always be in touch – whether you have an online or offline business – you must have a constant stream of fresh content that will keep your prospects and clients alike engaged with you.

High Quality Content Your audience expects a steady flow of high quality, high-value content. If you post on your blog each week, your readers will be expecting it. If you send e-mails daily, your subscribers will be looking for those. If you publish new videos weekly, your viewers will be checking in to watch them. All of your content, no matter where it’s published, needs to be interesting, unique, helpful, and informative in order for you to build a readership and a relationship with those readers. It’s nearly impossible to create good content consistently without a content strategy in place that emphasizes your standards of quality.

A Consistent Message Your overall strategy in content marketing should be to brand yourself as the expert source of information on a particular topic. In order to do this, all of your content must be relevant to that topic. Everything you

Your Target Market

Creating and publishing this content on a regular basis, however, is one of the most challenging tasks for business owners. This is why you must have a well thought-out content strategy. A content strategy is simply a system for planning your content creation, delivery, and management. Let’s take a look at some key factors that make up an effective content strategy:

publish must contribute to the overall story of you as the expert. It’s like fitting together the pieces of a puzzle, and it’s only possible to do this if you take the time to outline this key message in your content strategy.

Goals and Measures Knowing your content strategy will help you to set goals and determine whether or not you’ve reached them. How will you know if your content marketing is getting results? The only way to know is to create specific goals for each piece of content that you publish, and to make sure that those goals are both achievable and measurable. Then, tailor your strategy to meet them. Your content marketing goals should be in direct alignment with your overall marketing goals. For example, your broader goals may include attracting more visitors from your social media profiles to your main business website. That may mean that you need to set goals for creating more content to post on your social media sites, or by creating more content that will be

Part of developing a content strategy is to identify your target market. You need to know whom you’re creating content for. Only then can you identify what kind of content they need to help them solve their problems. A good content strategy will outline as much detail as possible about your target market. That includes demographics, pain points, hopes, dreams, preferences, learning styles, personality, etc. The more information you can use to paint a portrait of your typical customer, the better. Then you’ll be able to speak directly to that “person” when you’re creating content. One mistake that many content marketers make is to write as if they were addressing a group. It’s a natural inclination to do this. After all, you are writing to reach the masses. But you will be reaching them one person at a time. So always go back through your copy to see if it sounds like you are writing to just one person. (You want to see the word “you” a lot.) Adopting this style of writing will make every single person on your list feel special.

of ideas and information, you can simply go to these sources when you don’t know what to write, or send your content creators there. This is one of the keys for becoming a “content creation machine.” I keep a stack of 3x5 index cards around at all times. I simply write down any ideas I have for articles or content with enough information to remember what I was thinking. When I feel stuck, I simply go through these cards to spark my creativity.

Avoid Getting Stuck

Here’s some homework to get you started

A solid content strategy helps you a great deal when you get stuck for ideas or if you have writer’s block. By including an idea bank and previously identifying sources

The Resources You Need As part of your strategy, think about the type of content you’ll create early on so you can assess what resources you need before you need them. For example, if video is part of your strategy, you need video tools along with creation and editing software, or have a video expert available. There may be areas where you need to outsource parts of your content creation. Your content strategy should start with your readers and focus on their needs and interests. As you begin producing and publishing content, pay attention to reader feedback and traffic metrics to help you decide if or how your strategy should be changed.

Integrating Your New Puppy Last month I talked about how to go about finding a good breeder and buying a puppy. This month I want to talk about how to go about introducing your new puppy to the animals you already have and integrating them into your family. This is not intended to be a “how to raise your puppy, teach manners and good behavior” column, except where the specifics apply to creating a good relationship with other animals who are already a part of your family. In my experience, many people get a new puppy to keep an older dog company and to be a playmate for the older dog. This is not a bad idea but we tend to assume that because dogs are pack animals, the older one will like the idea of having a new sibling around. In most cases, that would be an incorrect assumption. Yes, dogs are pack animals, but to an older only-dog, their pack is their human family. A newcomer can be seen as an intruder and unwanted competition. Even if you have followed my advice and gotten a smaller, younger, opposite sex puppy, generally speaking you must know what you are doing and work at it in order to make your first dog feel good about the new puppy. Our human tendency is to do exactly the opposite of what works. Before we bring the new pup home, we often try to make up for it ahead of time with our first dog by giving them a ton of extra attention, love, and play. Then when the newcomer arrives we are totally distracted by and consumed by the needs of a new puppy. The older dog is often ignored for much of the time. When we are not dealing with the puppy, we think we should spend really good “special” time with the older dog so he/she knows how special they are and that we still love them. Looks good on paper, but actually this is how the problem of family dog fighting is created. Think about it. Temporarily, the older dog gets tons of attention and feels very special. Then, along comes a youngster and that pup gets all the attention. When the puppy is around, the older dog is either ignored

or, even worse, is reprimanded for bothering or being too mean to the puppy. What do you think the older dog learns from this? I’ll tell you. He begins to think “Darn, when it is just me, I get all the attention and everybody loves me, but whenever that stupid pup comes around, I get nothing or get in trouble.” He then goes on to think “I don’t like that puppy and I don’t want it around!” From the other side, we tend to baby the puppy. We pick them up and love ’em up all the time. We excuse their bad behavior. Besides that, we support them when they break all the dog pack rules and pester the older dog. We discipline the older dog when they try to teach the youngster some manners and the relationship goes down hill from there. What does the pup do with this? They start thinking “Wow, I am so special, surely, I am to be the leader of this pack, I can do anything I want, everything is mine, I am the boss of everyone here!” A recipe for disaster is brewing. To avoid this, do the opposite. Before the new puppy arrives, for at least a few days, put your older dog in doggie boot camp. That means, cut off all the free stuff and make them earn their privileges. Instead of just petting them when they approach you, ask them to “sit.” When they do, pet them for a few seconds. If they want more, ask for another sit or a different command. Have them earn everything, like their food, treats and going outside, play time and

games. When the new puppy arrives, continue to have the older dog earn privileges with one huge exception. Whenever the puppy comes around; give the older dog attention for free. The free attention can be physical pets, enthusiastic verbal praise, a treat, or a toy. When the puppy leaves or wanders away from the immediate area, cut off the free attention to the older dog. Puppy comes back, more free attention to the older dog. Now what does the old one think? “Darn, when it is just me, life is tough, I have to earn everything, but whenever that puppy comes around, I get lots of good stuff. I like having that puppy around. Hey puppy, I want you with me all the time.” Do not spoil the puppy right away. Teach manners and confine, supervise, and schedule everything. Do not make the older dog the “puppy sitter.” The older dog should not lose already earned privileges, like freedom from confinement, because you need him to be with the puppy. Let the older dog discipline the puppy. If you have done a good job of making the older one like and feel good about the pup, they will only sound tough and pull their punches physically. Stop the puppy if they pester the older dog. Do not allow the pup to take stuff away from the older one but do allow the older dog to take away from the puppy (there could be exceptions here). Separate them at meal times. Let the old dog push in front of the puppy but not vice versa. Treat and feed the older dog first and

the puppy second. Praise, praise, praise the older dog when you see them being patient with or even just tolerating the puppy behavior. Sometimes just verbal praise is more effective and important than touches and pets. Along with this basic concept, I also recommend good communication with both older dog and puppy, including telepathic aspects. If you are bringing the new pup into a household with cats, the most important thing is to be sure you have control of the puppy at all times. To allow the cats to build confidence and establish leadership and respect, never allow the pup to chase or harass the cats and let the cats discipline the pup if he gets too close. Encourage the cats to stand their ground bravely. Remind them that “Cats rule, dogs drool!” Martha Norwalk is an animal behavior therapist and host of Martha Norwalk’s Animal World, Sunday mornings, from 9 a.m. to noon on Alternative Talk AM 1150. Lose Weight, Get Fit and Influence People By Paul Timo It’s easy to lose weight and get fit. The natural effect will automatically be that you will influence people, particularly yourself. Your life will change, as you will be a different you. You’ll have more possibilities available to a healthier you. You’ll probably live longer with the decreased probability of health concerns. People 15 pounds under their recommended weight have the lowest mortality. Other people will be influenced as you will be showing up as a “better you.” They will want to be like you. Would you like to weigh what you weighed 10 years ago? I knew that when I got fit I would be better able to compete with my son when we play basketball and other sports. Here are some steps I’ve followed since September that allowed me to lose 19 pounds in eight weeks, returning to the weight I was in February of 2004. To lose weight and get fit, you will need to commit to a change in lifestyle. If you are willing to exercise because fitness is what you want, you will average exercising three to six times a week. If you don’t want to exercise that much, you can still lose weight easily by just controlling your intake of solids and liquids. You can lose weight with no exercise. Eat less, live more. If you decide to use a gym or fitness club, choose one that’s not far from your home. The one I chose was only three miles away. Choose a gym offers a contest for losing weight and/or gaining muscle. The supportive environment and comradeship helps one to follow through. The one I joined had a trainer available to help support me, one-on-one. The trainers can educate you regarding losing fat and gaining lean muscle mass. Muscle weighs more than fat. Depending on what percentage fat you have, there are different strategies to use for what you want to do. Pick the trainers’ brains as much as possible, and then when the contest is over you may want to have some extra sessions to keep you on track. It is also important to have your body measurements taken, including your fat percentage content. You want to have a “before” to compare to later on, so you can see how far you’ve come. Be sure that the contest includes a meal plan. If you don’t want to join a club, you can get your own personal coach/nutrition specialist and get your meal plan from them. Either way, it’s a good idea to have the plan approved by your doctor. I wouldn’t have entered the contest without a meal plan. I needed to be educated in that way. I’d never tried to lose weight before, nor had I monitored my consumption. I’d never counted calories. If you can be disciplined to workout at home, that’s great. I need to have a place to go, where exercising is the reason for being there.

There was a meal plan for a day of resistance training (anaerobic exercise, weights), and there was another meal plan alternative for cardio (treadmill, recumbent bike, stair stepper, etc.) and recovery days. Three meals and two snacks were on my plan for each day. The meal plan showed suggested foods for each meal, with the number of calories associated with a particular quantity of each food. It is important to consume some protein at each “feeding.” All day long, keep track on the meal plan sheet of the number of calories you consume (use pencil that can be easily erased at the end of the day). This is very important as it makes you snack less. My suggested total caloric intake per day was around 1,850 calories. At the end of the day, the totaled calories from the meal plan sheet can be entered on a calendar. Any calories burned from engaging in an activity, can be subtracted then from the total calories entered on the calendar to get to net caloric intake for the day. It is important to increase your water intake. I think most people are dehydrated, and drinking more water will automatically help curb your appetite. It will be easier to eat less. I suggest trying to drink a cup of water every hour. I set timers both to remind me to drink water hourly, and for my snack and meal times. Another important time to remember is three hours before bedtime. It is best to not eat close to bedtime. I want you to visualize what may happen to food if we get horizontal before our food is digested. See it turning into all kinds of fat. After one learns these basics, they can easily choose to continue to sculpt their body, decreasing their body fat percentage and increasing their lean muscle mass on their own, under their doctor’s supervision. It’s easy, as they’ve developed new habits of living. For example, you might want to go for a 35-month plan with a goal of ending up with your own version of a “six pack” or a “36-26-36” body. It might be a good idea to post some examples of similar bodies (visuals) around your home, particularly on the refrigerator door to give you lots of incentive. For even more incentive, you might see people playing tennis, playing two-on-two sand volleyball, hiking, sea kayaking, playing racquetball, winning Miss America contests, sunbathing on the beach in their bikinis, hang gliding, zip lining, the types of things that people with these types of bodies might be doing. I’m sure you’ve seen the bodies of those guys who play beach volleyball. Paul Timo is a motivational life coach who helps people realize their potential. His is not the normal coaching method. It is somewhat radical. He helps people recognize distractions, “listen,” trust and to allow themselves to be guided to their “truth.” Reach him at (425)260-8878 or

Spiritual and Shamanic Apprenticeship

Celebrating our Twenty-Fifth Year of Healing, Knowledge and Guidance

Our theme for 2014 is Nordic Shamanism, Spirituality and Mythology We pursue and relish the clarity of firsthand and experiential knowledge. For over thirty years of teaching together, we have been on a journey, both literally and metaphorically, to touch the mystery and myth and the spiritual and healing lore of indigenous cultures throughout the world. Our adventures have taken us from our present home on the edge of a fjord in Western Washington through the North and South Americas, to the icy plateaus and volcanos of Iceland, through the windswept barrens of the British Isles, onward across the Orkney Islands, Norway, continental Europe and the Mediterranean, to Asia and Polynesia. Due to our extensive firsthand experiences of the Otherworld and our initiation within various indigenous shamanic cultures and our direct experience of the ‘old ways’ of these cultures, we will explore and share the knowledge and teachings of the pre-Christian Germanic-Norse-Icelandic spiritual beliefs and practices.

A Spiritual and Mythic Journey to Norway September 20 – 28, 2014 Join us on a spiritual and shamanic journey to Gudvangen and Bergen, Norway. Experience the land and the Viking ancestors, actually row our Norwegian friend’s Viking Dragon Boat to a little-known sacred ceremonial site where we will teach and conduct ceremony; receive hands-on direct experience of the land and traditional knowledge such as the runes and galdr and spend time with Gudvangen’s Viking Chief. Our journeys are transformational and life-changing. Leave the mundane behind and experience the practices, magic and myth of the Norse.

Rev. Dr. JC Husfelt and Rev. Sherry Husfelt are your teachers and guides. Together they explore and adventure through travel and teaching and have been married for 47 years.

Empower Yourself with Crystals & Gemstones by Master Stephen Co

Crystals and gemstones deliver the magical qualities of nature. They are readily available and open a gateway of empowerment to all who understand these subtle but dynamic applications. We can harness the power of crystal energies for improving our health and relationships, protection from negative energies, increasing our healing powers, and increasing our spiritual connection. Grand Master Choa Kok Sui, in his book Pranic Crystal Healing, explains the ancient teaching that crystals are energy condensers. They have the ability to absorb, store, process, project, and focus different frequencies of subtle energies. This allows them to be powerful tools for manipulation of subtle energies with a variety of uses. Healing: Quartz crystals amplify the pranic energies (chi) that healers emit. This allows the healer to heal more severe cases that require massive pranic energies and to heal more people without being tired. Protection: Crystals, especially colored crystals/gemstones, like amethyst and rose quartz, can be programmed by the use of “mind intent” to concretize subtle energies and form powerful protective energy shields around people and places for protection against negativity and loss of energy to others. Increasing intimacy: Colored crystals like rose quartz can be used to activate the heart chakras of two people and strengthen their “heart connection.” It can also be used to awaken certain chakras that are connected to physical and emotional intimacy. Magnetizing prosperity energies: Crystals can also be programmed and worn on the body to stimulate the “prosperity chakra,” to make a person more practical and grounded. In order to fully harness the power of crystals and gemstones, the proper cleansing of old energies and programs have to be performed first. This can include cleansing with salt water and purging techniques to erase previous pro-

grams contained in the crystals. Then the crystals can be charged with special techniques to fully tap into their innate powers. When choosing a crystal, consider the following: Clarity: Clear quartz crystal is the most ideal for healing on all levels. The clearer the crystal the more energy it can process and store. Avoid inclusions that cut across horizontally and adversely affect the flow of energy. Color: Clear quartz is the ideal “multipurpose color.” You can project any color prana you wish through the clear quartz. Amethyst (violet) crystals are best to be used for emotional or psychological healing. Rose quartz (pink) is also a multipurpose color. It is not as powerful as clear quartz but has the advantage of projecting a softer and more loving energy that is easily absorbed by the subject’s body. Shape: The energy always flows out of the point. Single-terminated is the most functional shape. The single termination allows one to channel tremendous amounts of energy in one directio, through the pointed end. Double-terminated is ideal only for self-healing, not for healing others. Size: It is important that the crystal is long enough to be held comfortably like a pen, with both front and back parts of the crystal exposed. This allows energy to flow in from the back and project out of the point, adding to the powerful flow of energy already flowing from the healer’s hand. Diameter determines how strong the overall flow is. The wider the crystal the wider the energy beam. Master Stephen Co. the foremost master pranic healer in the world today, will be presenting classes and benefit events in the Greater Seattle area in March and April, 2014. Happy Valentine’s 3

A Beautiful Mind By Ester Nicholson

In the last couple of years, I’ve found myself recommitting to a kind of “spiritual boot camp” if you will. I made a decision to anchor myself even deeper in spiritual principles when I realized that I was off-center, and that I had somehow allowed the illusions of powerlessness and fear of lack and limitation to enter my heart and mind. I found myself basing my security on people and conditions. Of course, people and conditions are temporal, they change-up on you all the time. Companies that had contracted me to speak and teach were canceling on me left and right because of the “appearance” of the slow economy, the nest egg I had put aside was diminishing by the day, and the answer to every inquiry I made about getting booked as a speaker seemed to be “No, we don’t have the budget right now.” Needless to say, I forgot all about a higher power or higher order of things, and I was freaking out. Then I was freaked out about being freaked out. I’m a spiritual therapist; I’m not supposed to get freaked out if I really trust in something greater than myself, right? Well, this was a rich, wonderful opportunity to show me just how much I really did trust the universal presence, and it wasn’t looking too good. One evening after a particularly bad day, when everywhere I called, no one answered or when they did, the answer was, “No” or “Not right now,” I sat in the middle of my floor and made a decision. The decision was, “No more.” I will not live in fear, and I will not allow the illusion of lack and limitation to run my life for one more minute. I will not place my faith or my security in “man with breath in his nostrils,” and conditions. I’m not going to even place my faith in my own thinking right now, because my thinking needs a tune-up.
