STEM Fair set at high school

The seventh annual Delran STEM Fair is set for Monday, May 20 at the township high school.

The fair is organized by students and community partners of the township’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Ecosystem Alliance, which will showcase the Delran Innovation and Fabrication Laboratory, Star Lab (an interactive blow-up planetarium), Tesla Coil demonstrations by Lockheed Martin and other programs.

The goal is to expose the Delran community to the school district’s growing programs.

“… The opportunities for all students to move into a career in a STEM field is growing, including our strong connection to higher education and businesses in our area,” said Erica DeMichele, a K-12 supervisor

for the Delran school district.

“Students are being exposed early on to the importance of learning new skills, which will move them into great professions once they graduate.”

The fair will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Student and ecosystem partner display tables will include some of the following: K-2 First Lego League Jr. displays, grades three to five and six through eighth Lego Education displays, and Green Team Energy Savings interactive displays. The township Green Team will give away native seedlings.

of-the-art leaf machine – to demonstrate technology on the job. New this year is the Universal Technical Institute’s hands-on displays in auto, diesel and welding, robotics and wind-power activities.

Nominations sought for 2024 Outstanding Women Awards

Burlington County Commissioner Director Felicia Hopson and Commissioner Allison Eckel announced that nominations for the 2024 Outstanding Women of Burlington County Awards are now open.

The commissioners and the Burlington County Women’s Advisory Council will honor the outstanding contributions and leadership of women from the county. This year’s awards will include a new cat-

egory recognizing excellence in humanities, such as the arts, film, history, music, theater or writing.

Applications will be accepted until the close of business on Friday, June 28.

The awards are sponsored by the Women’s Advisory Council and the Burlington County Board of Commissioners.

The council is looking for women who have made significant contributions in their

chosen field and who have demonstrated their support for women in our communities. The nominees may have acted as mentors, role models or advocates for other women.

In addition to the new humanities category, the council will select women to honor in the following categories: community service and volunteerism, diversity/inclusion, military or veterans service, education/mentorship, first responder/law enforcement, government, health care and law.

NO ONE GETS A DIPLOMA ALONE.

Nomination criteria and forms are available online at https://burlingtoncountynj. formstack.com/forms/outstandingwomen2024. Questions can be emailed to womenscouncil@co.burlington. nj.us.

Winners will be honored at the annual Outstanding Women Awards Banquet in September.

Battered and bruised: The case that made domestic violence a cause

The recent death of O.J. Simpson brought to mind the staggering events of June 1994, when the football great was accused of killing his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and a friend. It was a legal case that became a spectacle.

We all know how that turned out.

But O.J. Simpson’s death on April 10 inspired a nationwide rehashing of the story we couldn’t look away from – then and even now. Many of us know where we were the moment Simpson was acquitted in 1995.

But behind that history is the fact that the murder case put a spotlight on domestic violence, a still intractable crime that affects more than 10 million adults – mostly women, but some men – each year, according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV).

Police made frequent visits to Brown Simpson’s home before she was killed and her ex-husband had already been convicted of spousal abuse. But that did not end her suffering: her death did.

Domestic violence hurts not just spouses or partners, but their children, of whom one in 15 are exposed to intimate partner violence each year, according to the NCADV. About 90% of those children are eyewitnesses to the abuse.

Repeated domestic violence can also have an effect on the victim’s extended family, the community and law enforcement. An abusive partner may threaten his target’s family or friends. Children who witness domestic violence bring those experiences to their schools. Ask any police officer and they will likely tell you domestic situations are their most dangerous calls.

Many believe the Simpson murder case resulted in Congress passing the Violence Against Women Act three months after Brown Simpson’s death, according to a New York Times op-ed by journalism professor Rachel Louise

Snyder. The law also established the National Domestic Violence hotline.

“At that point in time (the 1994 murders), we were still struggling to get people to understand what domestic violence was,” Rita Smith, executive director of the NCADV, told Time magazine. “And now that term – domestic violence – is something that most people understand. It’s not something that was universally known prior to those murders.”

Yet each step forward is often followed by a step backward. That may be because repeated violence against women most often occurs behind closed doors, with most cases never reported to police, according to domesticshelters.org. While just 10 to 18% of those arrested for domestic violence are arrested again within six months, 15 to 30% face a second arrest within 28 months, according to the website.

Getting out from behind those closed doors isn’t always easy either. The refrain we often hear – Why

doesn’t she just leave? – belies the fact that escaping abusive situations can result in being homeless, often with children. About 50% of all homeless women reported that domestic violence was the immediate cause of their situations, according to the National Center on Family Homelessness.

Victims are still too often not believed when they report domestic violence. Many have a hard time admitting they’re victims, according to NPR. Still others are killed before they can report the crime.

But progress has been made.

“It’s worth taking a moment to remember the ways his (O.J. Simpson’s) case – even in the light of the outcome – had profound and lasting consequences for domestic violence victims,” Snyder wrote, “for their advocates and for court systems.”

If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic violence, call the 800799-SAFE (7233) hotline. It operates 24/7.

County animal shelter holds open house

Event results in homes for 13 dogs and cats

The Sun

The Burlington County Animal Shelter’s April 7 adoption event resulted in forever homes for 13 of its dogs and cats.

The Field of Dreams Open House was organized by shelter staff, Burlington County Commissioners and the Friends of the Burlington County Animal Shelter. Along with activities and prizes, the event featured a simulated baseball game between the Burlington Strays (dogs) and the County Cats, where each shelter adoption produced a home run.

The felines prevailed.

“We wanted to do something where we get to showcase the animals outside of their kennels,” explained Ericka Haines, the shelter’s director. “Animals are always so much better when they’re outside the kennels, less reactive, much calmer, and we have a wonderful team of staff and volunteers.

“Shelters can always be very scary and intimidating and overwhelming for the dogs and for people,” she added “so it’s a great way for people to come out in a relaxed setting and meet different animals, whether they want to adopt or just learn about how to take care of animals.”

Among the 13 adopted pets were Ginger, who was surrendered last month after her owner passed away; and Romeo, Pierre and Biscotti, a trio of cats adopted by their foster family.

For those who missed the open house, there are plenty of opportunities to support the shelter and its animals, including as adopters and foster families. Available animals are listed online at https://www. co.burlington.nj.us/1446/Available-for-Adoption. Adoption fees are waived all year long for seniors, veterans and military families.

Burlington County Commissioner Deputy Director Dan O’Connell stressed that all the shelter pets are winners, as are the individuals and families who came out for the adoption event.

“Thirteen adoptions in one day is outstanding and shows how events like this that bring people to our shelter to meet and interact with the animals can make a difference,” said O’Connell, who tossed out the ceremonial first pitch for the simulated baseball game.

“ … It was a beautiful day for baseball and pet adoptions.”

“It has been a wave of emotions because it’s so great to see that the community backs us and they come out,” Haines observed. “We’ve had such a great turnout with something like this and it’s such a hard thing working in animal welfare, so it gives everybody an opportunity to see the positive.

“It gives us a chance to laugh and work together, so it really is a great chance for everybody just to come out and

have a great day.”

Residents unable to adopt or foster can also help by following the shelter’s social media and spreading the word about available dogs and cats. Volunteers can help with shelter tasks, make financial donations or offer the shelter needed supplies.

Singer-songwriter – and TV mogul –John Eddie ready to rock Resorts

To those who remember when singer-songwriter John Eddie regularly played up and down the Jersey Shore, his Saturday gig at Resorts Casino-Hotel may not seem like a particularly big deal. But seeing the Cherry Hill native on the Superstar Theater stage will actually count as a rare sighting.

“We stopped playing, obviously, during COVID; I hadn’t played until last summer,” offered Eddie during a recent phone call to his Nashville home. “I did a couple shows at (Asbury Park’s famed Stone Pony), one in Philadelphia and one at Ram’s Head (in Maryland) and that was it.

“I love playing, but it’s a different beast for where I’m at in my life now than it was when I was younger. So, I’ve only played four gigs in the last four years.””

What’s also different, he continued, is the musical marketplace. When he said he always looks “at the writing on the wall,” he was referring to the tribute-band explosion of the past decade or so. Whether the venues are theaters, clubs or casinos, acts that recreate the music of a specific band or solo artist tend to take up large chunks of the performance schedules.

“The tribute bands are really killing it,” Eddie noted, using the verb in a positive way. “I do a couple of covers in my shows, but it’s mostly original (material). It’s not like it was back when we first started (in the early 1980s). Everyone was trying to be in original bands back then. But now people want to hear songs they know.

“I’ve seen some of these tribute bands,” he added. “It used to be you’d look down on them with dis-

dain, but they’re really good and they really put the work in. I’m just like another audience member when I go see them: I want to hear a song I know, too. So I enjoy seeing them. It’s just not something I’m good at.”

As it turns out, Eddie – who has gained a loyal cult following with his gritty, roots-rocking music and heartfelt lyrics often tinged with a sly sense of humor – had another, far more glamorous excuse for cutting back on his musical performances the past few years: In 2023, Netflix streamed 10 episodes of “Agent Elvis,” a for-adults animated series in which Elvis Presley is portrayed as a super spy working for the U.S. government.

Eddie created and developed the show – the original pitch was “Elvis Presley directed by (“Pulp Fiction” director) Quentin Tarrantino” – with Mike Arnold, a writer for the FX series “Archer”; and the King’s ex-wife, Priscilla, whom Eddie first met some 20 years ago when he was the opening act on two tours headlined by Presley’s daughter Lisa Marie. The series’ star-studded cast included Mat-

thew McConaughey (as Elvis), Kaitlin Olson (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”) and Don Cheadle.

Despite receiving generally good critical and Internet buzz, the series was not renewed for a second season.

“I was co-show runner and cohead writer,” Eddie explained. “So that was a pretty heavy workload. We were working like 10 hours a day for three years on it. I was blessed to have it during COVID, because I didn’t have to play “to earn a living.”

While Eddie is likely disappointed that “Agent Elvis” wasn’t renewed, he certainly appreciates what a huge accomplishment it was to pitch a “crazy idea” to Priscilla Presley back in 2012.

“It would blow my mind when they’d go, ‘We sent the script to Matthew (McConaughey); he wants to do it,’” Eddie recalled. “And I’m like, ‘Really? Matthew McConaughey wants to be in this first thing I’ve ever done for TV?’”

Working with Priscilla Presley and the “Agent Elvis” cast was not Eddie’s first time rubbing elbows with big-time celebrities. On multi-

ple occasions through the decades, he has been joined onstage by Bruce Springsteen. The first time was in 1982 at Big Man’s West, the Red Bank nightclub owned by the late Clarence Clemons, the E Street Band’s beloved saxophone player.

As he recently posted on his Facebook page:

42 years ago today … it was Easter Sunday … the first time Bruce jumped up on stage and played with us … There were like 11 people in the audience … I was 22 years old and the guy who changed my life at age 14 with his words and music was standing next to me singing with me and my band … We played ‘Long Tall Sally,’ ‘Rockin All Over The World,’ ‘Proud Mary’ and ‘Carol’ … The next day my face hurt … I couldn’t figure out why … Then I figured it out … It was from smiling so hard the night before …Thanks for the kickstart Bruce

While Eddie, who has had his songs recorded by the likes of Kid Rock, Sammy Hagar and Keith Urban, has severely cut back on performing and is mustering most of his time and energy for future TV projects, his fans needn’t worry they’ve heard the last of him, musically speaking.

“I still write, and I’m planning on putting out a new record,” he promised. “I have no thoughts that I’m gonna have a hit record, but I write songs for myself that aren’t good for pitching to other artists.

“So I’m gonna put out another record once I figure out what songs I want to put on,” Eddie added. “I’m blessed; I still write. I could never stop writing music, even if I wasn’t putting it out. My phone has 3,000 songs on it that I wrote. I’m not saying there are 3,000 good songs. But I have 3,000plus songs on my phone.”

The latest offering is “A Dundie Demise: An Office Whodunnit,” whose setting and characters are taken from the sitcom “The Office.”

The program – for which audience members solve a homicide committed during the annual Dunder-Mifflin interoffice awards ceremony – debuted earlier this month and will be repeated this Saturday; Saturday, May 4; Saturday, May 18; and Saturday, June 1 and 8. services that include dental and developmental screenings, testing for lead and related poisoning education, flu shots and school physicals.

During the autism event, the Virtua team of Kim Bicenti, Deb Vickers, Victoria Cobb and Steve Martin were on standby in front of the pediatric unit in case anyone involved in the Fun Run got hurt. The smaller produce bus was also there, loaded with fresh fruits and sports drinks.

“Virtua’s Pediatric Mobile Services Unit is dedicated to advancing health equity by removing barriers that limit people from accessing vital care services,” said Virtua Vice President of Rehabilitation Services Maria Franchio. “By going directly into under-resourced neighborhoods and working with community partners, we believe we can help children onto a path toward optimal health.

” … We can also refer families to additional services –such as early intervention – as needed.”

Franchio also noted that the unit visits daycare cen -

ters, schools, community centers and other destinations to reach people in a familiar setting.

“The services we provide are free for patients,” she pointed out. “We are supported by several donors, notably the Joseph Lacroce Foundation, who make this program possible.”

The grocery store bus on its weekly 2 p.m. Thursday visit to Palmyra looked like a supermarket aisle, with displays of fresh vegetables; fruit; eggs; frozen meat and fish; bread; and non-perishable foods, among others.

The vehicle also makes stops every week in Cherry Hill, Sicklerville, Willingboro, Camden, and Delanco, and now in Atlantic City as part of a program created by Gov. Phil Murphy, according to April Schetler, assistant vice president of community health engagement at Virtua.

“You can measure success in so many ways,” she observed. “In the short term, helping to

ensure people have enough food to feed their family on a given week is hugely impactful. “Long term, we hope to demonstrate how good food and good health go hand in hand.

“We often survey our customers, and they tell us that they eat better and worry less about cost due to shopping with us,” Schetler continued. “Importantly, we visit the same sites week after week. This allows us to establish relationships, build trust and help people get healthy.”

The farmer’s market bus makes stops each week in Sicklerville, Westampton, Camden, Willingboro, Collingswood and Pennsauken.

“The Virtua Eat Well Mobile Grocery Store – and its sister program, the Eat Well Mobile Farmers Market – strives to increase access to fresh, affordable foods in neighborhoods where they are typically hard to come by,” said Schetler, adding that Virtua

also aims to provide culturally relevant foods and access to nutrition education through its partnership with the Rowan University Dietetics Program.

“We believe that healthy eating is the cornerstone of a healthy lifestyle,” Schetler noted. “Many people live in areas where fast food and corner stores are prevalent, and fresh food is hard to come by. We are working to change that, and we offer groceries at deeply discounted prices.

“For children, this helps establish healthy habits at an early age,” she added. “For adults, we have seen how healthy eating can help reduce symptoms of hypertension and Type 2 diabetes. We are building relationships with our community and demonstrating that we are here for good.”

Commissioners adopt fiscally responsible budget

The Burlington County Commissioners adopted a 2024 County Budget that delivers programs and services essential to residents’ quality of life, health and safety, while extending the county’s streak of having the lowest average county tax in New Jersey.

The $263 million spending plan was unanimously approved by the commissioners earlier this month, along with the County’s Open Space and Farmland Preservation Trust. The budget calls for a small reduction in total appropriations but maintains the county’s workforce and services.

Supporting farmland preservation and parks improvement

The budget calls for a $187.5

million tax levy for government operations, plus an open space tax of 3.5 cents per $100. The open space tax is expected to generate about $20.29 million to fund farmland and open space preservation, parks and trails improvements, along with park programs.

The open space remains below the maximum 4 cents per $100 rate authorized by county voters in 2006.

More than 63,000 acres of farmland is preserved in Burlington County, ranking the county No. 1 in New Jersey and No. 7 nationally.

Responsible financial planning

The budget’s operations tax levy complies with New Jer -

sey’s statutory levy cap and maintains the county workforce of 1,075 total employees.

Total salaries and wages increased $8.2 million and includes contractual increases and other reasonable adjustments needed to attract and retain quality workers. The budget also funds increased county payments for employee pensions and health premiums.

The budget maintains the county’s annual support for both the Burlington County Institute of Technology and the Burlington County Special Services School District, and it increases county funding for Rowan College at Burlington County, which is seeking to navigate a proposed state

funding reduction.

The spending plan continues funding for public safety, health and human services, including approved changes that increases assistance from the county’s first-time home buyer program and emergency home repair programs.

The county plans to use $11.5 million of the county’s $32.4 million in fund balance from 2023 to support this year’s spending. County officials still anticipate ending the year with a healthy surplus in excess of $20 million.

The budget uses $6.4 million in federal American Rescue Plan Act funds to offset revenue losses from the pandemic, marking the final year those funds will be available for rev-

enue offset. It also continues to responsibly manage the county’s debt with $38.4 million in debt service, up $2 million from 2023.

The county’s net debt of $189.9 million is now about 25% less than the $253 million debt carried by the county in 2018.

Burlington County’s Aa1 credit rating from Moody’s Investor Services is near the top of its rating scale and the agency has repeatedly cited the county’s budgeting, cost controls and strong financial management in reports maintaining that rating.
