about Goliat Goliat is the first oil producing field to come on stream in the Barents Sea. eni norge is the operator of the field (65% ownership share) and Statoil (35% ownership share) is a partner. The Goliat field is located in production licence 229 which was awarded in the “Barents Sea Round” in 1997. Estimated recoverable oil reserves are 28 million Sm3/174 million barrels and estimated recoverable gas reserves are 8 billion Sm3. Further exploration is ongoing in the area.

setting a new standard in offshore loading The Goliat development has set new standards in technology and safety in the transport, storage and loading of crude oil on the Norwegian Shelf. eni norge and partner Statoil have selected the Sevan FPSO 1000 (Floating, Production, Storage and Off-loading) concept for the Goliat field. The FPSO with its circular shape is the largest and most complex of its kind and it was selected in order to ensure safe and reliable production in the harsh conditions in the Barents Sea; it is fully winterized with the production areas covered for protection against icing. Goliat has one of the safest and most reliable offloading systems ever fabricated for offshore operations. The system is designed to be intuitive and safe to use. The distance between the shuttle tanker and the platform is greater than in similar offloading systems, to provide easier manoeuvring and to decrease risk.

A custom designed suspension system absorbs loads from the hose and ensures reliable and durable operation. A number of other measures have been taken to minimize operational risks; for example, a system is in place for frequent status monitoring of the hose, enabling it to be inspected in a variety of ways. During loading operations each time the hose is reeled in, its entire length is scanned by a video camera and light system. A camera will also be sent inside the hose to make an internal inspection – all to ensure safe and reliable offloading.

Goliat transport The Goliat shuttle tankers represent a new standard for offshore loading and transport. To ensure respect of the strict environmental requirements and safe and reliable operations in the Barents Sea, two state-of-the-art winterized vessels were designed and built. They are the first and only of their kind and will be dedicated to Goliat operations. The Goliat blend is exported directly from the FPSO with these vessels, therefore it will be sold on a delivered basis (e.g. CFR).

In the first few years of production it is expected that a vessel will arrive every ten days, loading approximately 850,000 barrels. Norway is ideally positioned to serve North West European and Baltic Sea markets, and potentially further destinations.


Goliat crude blend The Goliat blend consists of two reservoirs: Kobbe (74%): light (API: 43.3), low sulphur, paraffinic crude with low acidity. Realgrunnen (26%): medium (API: 32.3), low sulphur, intermediate paraffinic crude with low acidity.

The Goliat blend is low in sulphur and intermediate paraffinic, with a stronger naphthenic behaviour in distillates and more paraffinic behaviour in higher temperature fractionation. High yields are produced particularly in middle distillates. Distillates until 370 °C yields range between 69.0 and 70.5% m/m and distillates until 530 °C range between 90.1 and 89.9% m/m. Acidity is low.

Refining Characteristics Naphtha: C5-180 °C full of naphtha fractionation yields ranging between 27.3 and 23.6% m/m, 80-180 °C heavy naphtha (N+2A = 72.5-85% v/v) making it a very good feedstock for catalytic reforming for gasoline production. Middle Distillates: good yields in kerosene fractionation: poor combustion properties (smoke point) and excellent cold properties.

In gasoil fractionation it has good combustion properties (cetane index) and fairly good cold properties. Vacuum Distillates: low metal and nitrogen content and a good “K factor” results in this crude being a good feedstock for catalytic crackers or hydrocrackers. Vacuum Residue: low yields and medium low metal content (Ni+V = 23 ppm).

yields and properties The key properties of the Goliat blend are compared here against other grades in the North Sea. It is a sweet light crude oil, with a 째API gravity of around 40 and a sulphur content of about 0.14%wt; much lower than other North Sea crudes such as Statfjord, Forties or Brent.
