The Minister for Local Government Shelley Hancock MP has postponed the NSW Council elections until 4 December 2021.

A NSW Government Gazette dated 24 July 2021, stated, “I, the Hon. Shelley Hancock MP, Minister for Local Government, in pursuance of section 318C of the Local Government Act 1993 ("the Act"), do hereby revoke the Order made on 26 June 2020 which postponed the election requirements of the Act for all councils in New South Wales to 4 September 2021.

ATAGI urge locals to get vaccinated

AS the numbers of cases of COVID-19’s Delta strain increase in Sydney and Melbourne, no new cases have been seen in Port Stephens or the Myall Coast.

However, exposure sites have crept into Wallsend and Thornton.

We, like all communities are at risk through freight movements.

A pop-up COVID-19 testing clinic for freight workers has been placed on the Pacific Highway at Taree and there are more of these pop-up testing sites planned to help keep communities safe.

The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI), who advise the Minister for Health on the National Immunisation Program (NIP) and other immunisation issues, have changed their advice around vaccination stating that, “All individuals aged 18 years and above in greater Sydney, including adults under 60 years of age, should strongly consider getting vaccinated with any available vaccine including COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca.

“This is on the basis of the increasing risk of COVID-19 and ongoing constraints of Comirnaty (Pfizer) supplies.

By Tara CAMPBELL ONE person in Stockton has been found dead after a fatal fire blew through several units in Fullerton Street, Stockton.

Just after 5am on Monday 26 June, emergency services were called to the blaze on a series of units on Fullerton street and quickly extinguished the fire.

Derek Speck, Duty Commander for Fire and Rescue NSW Lake Macquarie and Newcastle told News Of The Area, “One person in unit one was found to be deceased and one person in unit three was evacuated by firefighters.

“Units one, two and three were severely damaged by fire,” Commander Speck said.

The tremendous winds overnight intensified the scene and the fire was well-advanced by the time emergency services reached the scene.

The deceased person found is yet to be identified.

NSW Police Detective Superintendent Wayne Humphrey addressed the situation at the scene.

“The condition of the remains of the deceased are

New mask mandates

NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard has implemented tougher rules on face masks in the News South Wales’ fight against the Delta outbreak of COVID-19.

exempt from wearing a mask will now have to carry evidence from a registered medical practitioner any time they leave the house.

Mr Hazzard spoke regarding the new mandate.

“If you don’t wear a mask for what you say is a medical reason you will be required

to have on your body, in your possession, a letter or other evidence from a registered medical practitioner explaining that is actually a true situation,” he said.

The current health restrictions highlight the compulsory mask-wearing of all residents over the age of

twelve in NSW in all indoor non-residential premises including public transport, unless they have a medical condition permitting an exemption.

According to NSW Government rules, Police regulatory officers can ask for confirmation of the

lawful reason residents are not wearing a face mask, where a medical certificate, letter from a health practitioner or NDIS provider alongside a statutory declaration must be provided.

NSW Health emphasises the importance of proper mask-wearing.

“Wash or sanitise your hands before putting on or

taking off your mask and refrain from touching the front of your mask whilst wearing or removing it.

“Ensure the mask covers your nose and mouth and fits snugly under your chin, over the bridge of your nose and against the sides of your face,” the organisation said.

THE pandemic has seen Australians isolated, lonely and vulnerable to cyber attacks.

Cybercriminals are targeting Australians at an unprecedented level to steal sensitive information and money, including through business email compromise and ransomware attacks.

Launching the next stage of the ‘Act Now Stay Secure’ cyber security campaign, Assistant Minister for Defence, the Hon Andrew Hastie MP, said the consequences of cybercrime can be catastrophic for businesses, families, and individuals.

“In the 12 months to 30 June this year, around 4,600 reports of business email compromise have been made to the Australian Cyber Security Centre.

“Of these, around a third reported financial losses totalling approximately $81 million,” Assistant Minister Hastie said.

“Email is a very common tool for the delivery of ransomware attacks, with phishing messages sent to potential victims containing malicious links or attachments.

“Compromised email accounts can also be used

by cybercriminals to send fraudulent emails to the business’ customers, or steal sensitive information leading to the victim being blackmailed.”

Business email compromise occurs when criminals exploit trust by impersonating employees or companies through email to fraudulently obtain money or goods.

“A business or individual who has their email account compromised or targeted by scammers and cybercriminals could suffer catastrophic financial losses through scams or ransomware.

“There are things everyone can and should be doing to protect themselves and their email accounts – use complex passwords and multifactor authentication, back up your data and keep a copy off-line, and don’t click on suspicious links.

“As part of the ‘Act Now Stay Secure’ campaign, the Australian Cyber Security Centre has released new email security guides to help prevent email compromise, and advice to help victims recover from an email attack,” Assistant Minister Hastie said.

“There are also easy stepby-step guides on securing your

PLASTIC: it’s in our foods, our waterways, it is killing our wildlife and is one of this century's biggest environmental issues.

Yet, for far too long, plastic has been used for cheap promotions and throw away disposable implements.

Children’s toys are heavy on plastic these days and now, the era of a plastic giveaway at the supermarket checkout to promote loyalty is seemingly coming to an end.

In its Together to Zero commitment Coles has launched a National Sustainability campaign committing to no longer give away plastic collectible toys.

As part of its ambition to be Australia’s most sustainable supermarket, Coles Group is launching a national campaign that brings to life and celebrates its recently launched Sustainability Strategy under the pillars of ‘Together to Zero’ and ‘Better Together’.

Commencing Sunday 25 July, the campaign highlights Coles’ aspiration towards zero waste, zero emissions and zero hunger.

Having recently stopped selling singleuse plastic tableware, Coles has also reviewed the sustainability of its marketing campaigns and has today committed to no longer give away plastic collectible toys.

Coles Chief Marketing Officer Lisa Ronson said while collectible toy programs like Little Shop and Stikeez have been popular with customers in the past, they no longer align with Coles’ sustainability ambitions or with customers’ preferences and priorities.

q Nelson Bay Hockey juniors can now aspire to a home advantage at the Brisbane 2032 Olympics.

AN 11 year window for training exists for athletes to participate in the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.

Australian Sports Commission (ASC) Chair Josephine Sukkar says an extended 11-year runway to the Brisbane 2032 Games provides an incredible opportunity to unite the nation through sport.

The ASC, comprising Sport Australia and the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), welcomes the International Olympic Committee’s decision to award the 2032 Olympics and Paralympics to Brisbane.

Nelson Bay Hockey Club is very excited that Australia is hosting the 2032 Olympics.

Lindsay Brown of the Nelson Bay Hockey Club told News Of The Area, “As a small club we have a high success rate of developing our kids so they can go on and achieve success at State level.

“We are hopeful that some of our current juniors will be competing in 2032.

“It will be good not having to travel so far.

“I’ll be 25 then and I aim to be at my peak so I can race to my full ability.

“This is definitely something I will be working towards, as well at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.

“I just have to keep training hard.”

It will be the third time Australia hosts the Games, but this will be by far the longest lead-up.

Sydney was announced as host in 1993, seven years before the 2000 Games.

Ms Sukkar of the Australian Sports Commission said, “When you consider how successful Sydney 2000 was and how those Games still carry an enormous legacy today, the extended build-up to Brisbane 2032 is an incredible opportunity to again unite Australia through sport.

“For a lucky few, competing in Brisbane will represent an opportunity of a lifetime.

“All of us, however, can

benefit from the positive influence of a home Games if we embrace it.

“We must take advantage of the laser-like focus hosting a home Games presents us.

It is a chance to drive sport participation, re-invigorate volunteering, elevate our inspiring sporting heroes and continue building our vision for sustainable success across Australian sport.

“There is a golden decade of major sporting events on home soil ahead, with World Cups or World Championships locked in for basketball, cricket, football, and netball, to name some.

“Every sport needs to take advantage of this generational opportunity, to capture the hearts and minds of Australians.

“We acknowledge the hard work of all that have contributed to this successful Brisbane 2032 bid, including the Australian Government, Queensland Government, Australian Olympic

With the additional funding, Energy Renaissance will accelerate the development of scalable process, and procedures from a 2,700 square metre pilot facility in Tomago.

Funding from this grant will allow rapid testing and the development of a scalable, manufacturing line and trained workforce that will inform the technology, systems and processes for Renaissance One, Energy Renaissance’s permanent, purpose built, 4,400 square metres battery manufacturing facility in Tomago that is slated for completion in February 2022.

Energy Renaissance manufactures Australian made batteries that are safe, secure, affordable and optimised to perform in hot climates.

These batteries will power stationary (grid and microgrid, renewables, community storage, mining electrification, Defence SilentWatch applications) and transport (buses, light commercial and industrial vehicles) applications.

Tomago Clean Energy Business Gets Funded

BATTERIES are big in the future of clean energy and local businesses are at the front of the race to manufacture them here in Australia.

Port Stephens based Energy Renaissance Pty Limited has received $525,072 to scale up production of its lithium-ion battery energy storage system (‘BESS’) technology for use in hot-climate markets such as Australian and Asia.

The Morrison Government is supporting Australian manufacturers with $7.1 million in funding to help them commercialise innovative products and take them to the world.

Under tranches two and three of the Government’s $30 million Commercialisation Fund, 15 ground-breaking projects have received backing, including production of lithium-ion battery energy storage system technology, and a handheld onfarm analysis tool to check the nutritional values of produce.

Energy Renaissance is building a plant at Tomago which will be making batteries at the cutting edge of technology.

Minister for Industry, Science and Technology Christian Porter said the Commercialisation Fund supports Australian manufacturers to take their valuable innovations through the commercialisation phase and unlock new economic opportunities both at home and abroad.

“These grants will enable companies to undertake further research and development activities, improve engineering and design elements and invest in new technologies so they can scale up operations and bring their products to market,” Minister Porter said.

Be Wildlife Aware On Our Roads

By Alice HENNEN IT’S clear that wildlife and cars don’t mix.

One only has to look for the often unrecognisable carcasses of what were once kangaroos and possums by the side of the road to see the impact that traffic can wreak on our local native animals.

Wildlife In Need of Care (WINC) volunteer Ryan Ashpole was called out to Myall Street, Tea Gardens at 9:30 pm on 19 July to attend to a male kangaroo which appeared to have been hit by a car.

Unfortunately, by the time Mr Ashpole arrived at the scene, the kangaroo had already died from his injuries.

“As I was looking over him I could not see any visible broken bones or blood from him or from a big hit from a car,” he reported.

“That doesn’t mean he was not hit from [sic] a car.”

“If someone was speeding they would have had to slam on the brakes and I could not see any tyre marks on the road.”

“Again this doesn’t mean that he didn’t get hit from [sic] a car.”

Motorists are urged to look out for wildlife and to be aware when driving at dawn and dusk, as these are times when kangaroos and other wildlife are most active.

If a driver hits a kangaroo or other animal, Mr Ashpole advises to call a wildlife rescue organisation such as WINC and they will be on the scene to help the creature.

“Please do not approach the kangaroo [sic] it will stress them out and they can

In response to a number of reports about locals and visitors feeding dingoes, MidCoast Council is renewing its plea for members of the Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest communities, as well as visitors to the area, to refrain from feeding/interacting with dingoes.

“It’s really disappointing that we find ourselves back in this situation, such a short time after serious action had to be taken as a result of these types of interactions,” said Mat Bell, Council’s Senior Ecologist.

It is only a matter of months since Council culled a group of dingoes which were deemed dangerous.

Council, together with NSW National Parks and Wildlife Services and Hunter Local Land Services, took lethal control to manage the escalating risks to community safety from a pack of subadult dingoes that had been involved in a spate of incidents with people and domestic pets.

These dingoes were being

given access to human food in and around urban Hawks Nest.

“We believe education is key and we would hate to see the need for control measures to be taken again.

“While these people may think they’re helping the dingoes, they’re actually doing them a great disservice.”

Council follows an adopted dingo management procedure that is a risk management model based on the successful program in place on Fraser Island.

Mat explained that when dingoes are fed by humans they can lose their inherent shyness and fear of people and the territory that they occur in becomes worth aggressively defending.

Sometimes within days, these animals can become highly territorial and exhibit increased aggression to domestic pets and people.

"It's imperative that the community gets behind this important message and please, do not approach, encourage or feed the

dingoes.

"We cannot have this continue, ultimately it's the dingoes that suffer," Mat added.

Council has an online reporting form for members of the public to share information about interactions and incidents with dingoes, while Rangers have commenced issuing penalties to anyone caught ignoring Dingo Smart advice.

“Our Rangers will be following up on reports of residents and visitors feeding dingoes.

“The compliance also focuses on other actions that unreasonably permit dingo access to human food sources, such as where bins haven’t been secured properly and food scraps are easily accessible,” said Mat. "We're continuing to work closely with experts from Taronga Zoo and the University of NSW to increase understanding of the dingoes in our region but we'll need the community to be advocates and lead by example to stop other community members

Don’t Feed The Dingoes!

DINGOES on the Mid North Coast are at risk and it’s the members of the community that are feeding them that are doing the greatest harm.

Local dingo advocate Jen Parker is angry that people are continuing to do the wrong thing around the local dingo population.

Jen has been working for over 40 years to create better outcomes for the dingo which is Australia’s Apex predator.

Jen has worked alongside Queensland National Parks on Fraser Island and Midcoast Council to help create signage that works to educate the public in relation to dingoes.

She told News Of The Area, “It is not the dingoes fault - it is human error – dingoes don’t need to be fed.

“Dingoes are naturally lean and are quite capable of finding their own food source.”

She is keen to see the community better educated and believes that a leaflet to all households outlining the do’s and don’ts around

Grants are between $100,000 and $1 million, with funding to make up no more than 50% of the total project costs.

Port Stephens has been successful in gaining funding for four crucial areas. $350,000 has been allocated in Nelson Bay for Beach Road Victoria Parade: to install kerb improvements, a raised

pedestrian crossing, High Pedestrian Activity Area with traffic calming and intersection and/ or pedestrian crossing improvements.

There is a further $440,000 in Nelson Bay for Stockton Street, Donald Street, Yacaaba Street Magnus Street, Lamen Street and Government Road to install a High Pedestrian Activity Area with traffic calming, and improve road geometry.

GEORGE Reserve in Salamander Bay is the latest Port Stephens park to receive a freshen-up, with Council installing new amenities and new play equipment.

Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer says the improvements will make a big difference for users.

“George Reserve may be small but it’s very popular with locals including young families and it’s not hard to see why – the view over the port is spectacular,” Mayor Palmer said.

“To make this space even better for users, we’re installing a new swing set for the kids and new pathways to improve access to and from the playground.

“We’re also installing new inclusive amenities and a beach shower, which will be a big upgrade on the current facilities.

Former Salamander Bay Rotary President Ina George has been committed to sourcing funds to upgrade and restore the park for the community.

“George Reserve in Salamander Bay is an iconic waterfront park with spectacular views to the Tomaree Headlands.

“The reserve is named after my husband’s late uncle Herbert George – a member of Port Stephens Council over

50 years ago – and I wanted to revitalise the neglected park and bring it back to life.

“This park has been visited by thousands of people throughout the years and

A CONCRETE pathway linkage between Lemon Tree Passage and Mallabula is now listed in the forward works program for Port Stephens Council.

This will entail some excavation work around the main bend in the approach to Lemon Tree Passage and it will link up with Kawarren St. On top of this, work is currently underway on pipework to drain Tanilba Bay's main thoroughfare, Avenue of the Allies.

“We need to drain this road before the major makeover begins,” said Port Stephens Councillor Steve Tucker.

“Over three million dollars is ear-marked for the project and along with the drainage, a pedestrian pathway will be put in place at the same time.

A pantry for all

SOMETIMES empathy and doing just a little bit more than required changes an entire community.

The Little Free Pantry is a grassroots, crowdsourced solution to immediate and local needs in the Stockton community.

Tucked away from the weather in the picnic shelter near Lynn Oval, the pantry stores food and items of need, and is available 24/7 for anyone in need in the community.

The creator of Stockton’s Little Free Pantry, Rachel Towns, spoke to News Of The

Area about what the project means to her.

“Little Free Pantry Stockton provides a dignified and practical way for people to donate and access foods and information on services without judgement.

“The Little Free Pantry idea developed when I was caring for a patient in the Psychiatric Emergency Care Centre.

“It went straight to my heart when I realised that during a really terrifying time at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the patient’s only possession was a list of places to go for free meals,” she said.

After looking into the list

and realising that there were no initiatives in the Stockton Community, Rachel continued researching before stumbling onto the American incentive ‘The Little Street Pantry’ and so Stockton’s location was created.

Set up just over a year ago, Rachel chose not to advertise the pantry to minimise shame attached to need, hoping that word of mouth would be enough.

It wasn’t long until Priscilla Chapman reached out and is now a pivotal part of the Pantry.

“Priscilla supplies the Little Free Pantry with resources to connect people

in need with vital services and support in our community area.

“She has sourced grocery donations from big name supermarkets and even secured a supply of delicious nutrition bars and tee shirts from ‘KIND’ endorsed,” Rachel said.

The pantry is now supported by a number of community members who donate a range of items.

“Whether a need for food or a need to give, Little Free Pantries help feed neighbours, nourishing neighbourhoods. “Little Free Pantry Stockton is not an organisation,” she said.

For those wishing to donate to the pantry, consider non-perishables and hygiene, first aid and health supplies.

AS COVID-19 cases have surged across the nation, so too has sexual abuse and sexual assault of children and young people, cites Kids Helpline.

Kids Helpline, a service of yourtown for children and young people aged 5 to 25, reports an increase of 49% nationally in sexual abuse by family members over the past 6 months from 1 January 2021 to 30 June 2021 when compared to the same period in 2020 of young people making contact with counsellors.

“Kids Helpline answered

210 additional contacts in the first six months of 2021 (a total of 662) from children and young people raising the issue of being sexually exploited by family members.

“A total of 452 contacts were responded to in the same time period in 2020,” said yourtown CEO Tracy Adams.

“Child sexual abuse can take place behind closed doors.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has affected daily life through restrictions on people’s movements and interactions, potentially limiting opportunities for child abuse

to be detected and reported.

“It is uncomfortable to think children are being sexually abused by those who have responsibility to care for them most, but Kids Helpline statistics for the past 6 months highlight the vulnerabilities children have in their own homes,” continued Ms Adams.

A breakdown by State of Sexual Abuse (Intra familial abuse/Incest) and Sexual Assault (classified as being external to the family) for the period 1 January to 30 June 2021 vs the same period in 2020 is as follows.

STUDENTS around Port Stephens continue to have their efforts rewarded through the Positive Behaviour and Learning Program.

The program highlights rewarding safety, trust and honesty, acting responsibly and respect for success and involves nine local schools.

The breakfast club at Irrawang High School provides essential meals for students that would otherwise miss out.

Hot toast and Milo, juice, and a chance to eat with others is provided at the school for every student that may not get a meal at home.

Liam Bennett has been nominated for PBL for his efforts in helping to make the breakfast club available.

He volunteers from 7am every Tuesday to help his fellow students.

Logan Ackling of Salt Ash Public School was nominated because has given up his weekend to sell raffle tickets to raise money to help the motor neuron disease charity Fight MND. Meanwhile, being helpful and compassionate to other students saw Tia Richens of Seaham Public School, Astra Barrett of Raymond Terrace Public School, Miriah-Rose Saunders of Karuah Public School, Angus Vaughan of Medowie Public School, Edith Thornton of Grahamstown Public School and Xanthiah Roach of Hunter River High School nominated.

Parliamentary inquiry into pandemic management

A NSW parliamentary inquiry has been restarted to explore the circumstances of the latest COVID-19 outbreak and its management by the state government – including the handling of restriction and lockdown measures, and how the pandemic will be managed in the future.

In view of the recent outbreak of the Delta variant of COVID-19 in NSW, the Upper House Public Accountability Committee has recommenced its COVID inquiry, which first began in early 2020.

It will be holding further hearings into the following issues: • The circumstances and the cause of the recent outbreak of COVID-19 • How the quarantine and transport protocols in place prior to the recent outbreak were assessed and set • Lessons learnt from the transportation of Fed Ex workers • The steps that have now been taken to ensure that such an outbreak cannot happen again, including any changes to state and national health, quarantine or transport protocols since the outbreak • The nature and content of the health advice relating to the imposition of additional restrictions and lockdown,

and the timing of such additional restrictions and lockdown • The future management of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Commenting on the recommencement of the inquiry, the Chair of the committee, Mr David Shoebridge MLC, observed, "The latest COVID-19 outbreak is a public health and economic crisis. The committee is looking for cooperation from the government to understand the circumstances of the outbreak and the steps that have been taken to ensure that it does not happen again."

"Whilst the committee is exceedingly mindful of not diverting government efforts and resources from containing and suppressing the outbreak, there remains an important and ongoing role for the Parliament in keeping the government accountable for its actions in response to the recent outbreak. The government must be scrutinised for decision-making at this critical juncture."

The committee will be seeking the cooperation of the Minister for Health and Medical Research, the Hon Brad Hazzard MP, and the Chief Health Officer, Dr Kerry Chant PSM, to appear and give evidence on these important matters before the Legislative Council sits again, currently scheduled for 10 August 2021.

Karuah To Meet Candidates In November

HOT on the heels of the announcement to change the date of the NSW Council elections, the Meet the Candidates meeting set for August 4 in Karuah has been postponed.

Fred McInerney of the Karuah Progress Association told News Of The Area that

he “hopes that the meeting will be rescheduled in November to precede the new NSW Council election date of 4 December 2021”.

Minister for Local Government Shelley Hancock said the decision, after extensive consultation with and advice from the NSW Electoral Commission and NSW Health, has been made

in response to the COVID-19 situation.

“Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and current Public Health Orders impacting Greater Sydney, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the Local Government elections until later this year,” Mrs Hancock said.

There is some climbing over rocks involved, so sturdy shoes and a jacket are a must.

2. Walk the waterfront. Start at Apex Park in Nelson Bay and follow the footpath west over the hill.

There is a footpath pretty much the whole way to the Anchorage, when you get there you can reward yourself with a drink or a bite to eat before tackling the return journey.

If you arrive at Apex Park between 1pm and 3pm, kick back and enjoy the live music.

For everyone 1. Head through Shoal Bay and take on the Tomaree Headland Walk.

It is a bit of a hike to the top but the view when you get there is spectacular.

Okay, now let’s not jump to conclusions here. A fingerless net glove conjures all sorts of difficultto-explain scenarios, but this could be entirely innocent. You know, maybe he had to do a role play in his marketing job, and he was given the card that required him to wear suspenders, gloves and a masquerade mask, because the company was testing the market on a new range of . . . um . . . Or maybe he was watching the Rocky Horror Picture Show, and just, you know, getting involved in the ‘Don’t Dream It, Be It’ sequence.

No? Okay, maybe he was doing an experiment, like, ‘Do mosquitoes penetrate body netting?’, because he is going to patent a new range of pesticide-free mosquito products. If he had bites on his fingertips, but not the rest of his fingers, he could be onto something. No? Maybe he just likes fingerless net gloves, and who are we to question that, Mrs DP from Lemon Tree Passage, because with that very long road into Lemon Tree, sometimes you need a bit of amusement. Things can get a bit boring on that straight stretch.

I wouldn’t be too worried. I’m more concerned that you are still putting away your husband’s socks and underwear. Do you iron them? Do you fold them in neat Marie Kondo space-saving combinations? Do you colourcoordinate? Does he have the days of the week on his socks and undies? This is 2019, you know.

Let him put his own things away and then you’ll be none the wiser.

Thompson Trophy B Grade

NELSON Bay Croquet Club – Thompson Trophy B Grade The Thompson Trophy is the Club’s annual golf croquet singles competition which is played in three grades based on handicap.

The B Grade competition for handicaps 7 to 9 was played on Sunday 25 July 2021.

Despite cold and windy conditions, Club President David Wilson went through the day undefeated to take

out the 2021 Thompson Trophy B Grade competition.

Eight members contested the B Grade competition: Barry Elliott, Liz Friend, Laurie Lawson, Allen Lees, Karen Lilly, Jim Timbs, Rae Uptin and David Wilson.

The players were seeded into two blocks of four giving a round-robin of three games, followed by semi-finals and a final.

In Block A, Barry Elliott and Liz Friend both won two games with Barry finishing top on hoop difference.

In Block B, David Wilson was top winning three games with the others all winning one game each, with Laurie Lawson finishing 2nd on hoop difference.

In the semi-finals. Laurie beat Barry 7-4 and David beat Liz 7-6 before David triumphed over Laurie 7-3 in the final.

KARUAH EAST QUARRY COMMUNITY CONSULTATIVE COMMITTEE POSITION(S) VACANT Karuah East Quarry is a State Significant Development with an established Community Consultative Committee (CCC).

The purpose of the CCC is to provide a forum for open dialogue between the operators of the quarry and representatives of the local community, stakeholder groups and local Councils.

The CCC are seeking suitable applicant(s) to join the established committee. Applicants will generally live locally and/or are members of community, environment, Aboriginal or Industry stakeholder groups.

Positions on the CCC are voluntary and you will be expected to: • contribute constructively to committee discussions; • communicate information about the KEQ between the committee and the broader community; and • attend two (2) to four (4) meetings per year.

The role of the committee is advisory with meetings held during normal working hours.

q The Soldiers Point team of Shipley, Clarke and Antram.

WATCHED by a large crowd, the final of the Zone Men’s Bowls Triples was played at Soldiers Point Bowling Club last weekend.

In one semi-final, the Nelson Bay Team of Richard Girvan, Jake Graham and Chris Edmonds beat a strong Raymond Terrace Team to qualify for the final.

The other semi-final was won by the Soldiers Point Team of Terry Antram, Daniel Clarke and Warren Shipley.

The final resulted in high quality bowls being played by both teams with Soldiers Point proving too strong with a 24 shots to 14 win.

The team will now progress to the State Finals.

Congratulations also go to the two Soldiers Point teams qualifying for the Zone Final of the over 60's Triples held at Wallsend.

The team of Michael Beesley, Bill Ahoy and Mark Sheppard beat the team of Chris Ramage, Trevor Sager and Barry Brennan in a close encounter.

New bowlers are welcome at Soldiers Point Bowling Club where they can receive free coaching so as to compete in this challenging sport, contact Terry Antram on 49827137.
