By Tara CAMPBELL MIDCOAST Council is currently in the initial planning stage for disability access upgrades to the Tea Gardens pool.

With a $700,000 funding grant from the NSW Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Fund the funding allocations specifies $300,00 to upgrade the entrance to the site of the pool, providing accessible paths and buildings as well as $400,000 for an accessibility ramp into the pool, with an entrance and exit pod built as an extension to the existing pool.

The current plans were discussed in a meeting with a number of pool users at the site on 27 August.

Port Stephens Hunter Police keeping the region Covid-safe PORT Stephens-Hunter Police have been out and about performing stationary RBT duties, to keep the community safe from drink drivers, and on the look-out for those who have travelled to our region from a COVID hot-spot.

Recently, police attached to Tea Gardens, and local sector stations, positioned themselves on Myall Way into Tea Gardens/ Hawks Nest and performed stationary RBT duties over a period of one hour.

In that time police conducted 286 tests.

“No positive readings were detected, but, four persons were identified as being from a COVID-19 hot-spot, three of them were able to produce documentation that allowed them to be lawfully in our patch, the other person was not able to establish a lawful exemption and was issued a penalty notice for $1000.00 and directed to return home,” a statement on the Port Stephens Hunter Police District Facebook page read.

“Help us to help you - always abide by current COVID restrictions by wearing a mask and signing-in when required.

WITH uncertainty around the COVID-19 pandemic continuing, there’s never been a better time to explore the range of contactless customer service points available when dealing with MidCoast Council.

Whether it’s making a payment, registering your pet, lodging a service request or tracking a development application, there’s no longer a need to visit Council’s customer service centre to complete your transaction over the counter.

These services, and many more, can be handled easily from your own home, over the internet or by phone.

“While there’s nothing more we enjoy than welcoming the community into our customer service centres, their safety and that of our staff remains our number one priority,” explained Adrian Panuccio, MidCoast Council’s General Manager.

“The first phase of integrating our online services was completed late last year and take-up by our customers has been pleasing.”

For those who are unfamiliar with Council’s online services, the Customer Service team is on hand to guide you through the process to complete your transaction as quickly and efficiently as possible.

“Annual property rate notices are currently being prepared, so now is a great time to think about the range of payment options available that will not only save you a trip to your nearest customer service point, but minimise the risks associated with face-to-face contact.”

Setting up a direct debit means you don’t have to transact manually at rates time ever again. Automatic deductions can be arranged either when your payment falls due, or in smaller weekly, fortnightly or monthly instalments.

Online payments can be made securely via MidCoast Council’s website and via BPay, while payments may also be made over the phone or by sending a cheque or money order in the post.

The Australian Melanoma Foundation states, “Australia has the highest melanoma rate in the world.

“It is expected that 16,000 people will be diagnosed with melanoma this year.

“That means one person is told they have melanoma every 30 minutes and melanoma is the most deadly form of skin cancer.”

An estimated 1300 people will die from melanoma in Australia this year, with many of those diagnosed aged between 15 and 39 years of age.

Skin checks are vital to detect melanoma early.

Most general practitioners are able to perform a skin check or you can access more specialised services at a skin cancer check clinic or dermatologist.

The procedure for the transaction of properties has changed significantly, commencing with the introduction of the Torrens Title system in the early 1900's.

From October 2021 you no longer need a physical Certificate of Title and all land dealings must be lodged electronically.

Historically possession of a title deed was confirmation of ownership. Title deeds should now be kept as memories of the past because you will only be able to deal with land electronically through

a registered solicitor or conveyancer.

Presently, transactions are conducted electronically through a platform known as Pexa; however some are made physically.

From October 2021 all dealings will have to take place electronically.

Smart meters help caravan parks save water and money DIGITAL water meters continue to demonstrate their value as water conservation tools across the region, with the technology helping numerous caravan parks to save water and money.

Council-installed ‘smart meters’ have detected leaks at 10 MidCoast caravan parks this year, leading to an estimated saving of 26 million litres of water.

Council’s Director of Infrastructure and Engineering Services, Rob Scott, said the saving was significant and showed the technology was proving a valuable way for major customers to reduce water use and ensure their systems were as efficient as possible.

“Unfortunately, many of our caravan parks have old pipes and are located on sandy soil, which makes it really difficult to pick up on leaks because the water doesn’t show up on the surface,” said Mr Scott.

“Thanks to the smart meters, we’re now able to notify the parks as soon as we notice any abnormal usage, which helps them to find the leaks and fix them before they become too costly and wasteful.”

Sandbar and Bushland Holiday Park at Smiths Lake is one park that has already benefitted from the technology, less than a month after having a smart meter installed.

Park manager Evan Hunter said he was able to fix a 20 litre per minute leak that might have otherwise gone unnoticed.

He was excited by the savings the park could make as a result of having access to upto-date information on its water usage.

button is very handy,” said Mr Hunter.

“Potentially we’re looking at about $50,000 a year in savings.

“That’s a lot of money to the bottom line.”

Smart meters were identified as an effective tool for reducing water use in Council’s most recent Integrated Water Cycle Management Strategy, Our Water, Our Future. “ They have been installed at the sites of selected large users at no cost to the customer to reduce water loss and give customers greater control over their water use.

A trial of the technology will also get underway at Stroud Road soon, with smart meters to be installed at every residential and commercial property in the village.

This will allow Council to assess the effectiveness of the technology inside the home before potentially rolling it out to more communities across the region.

YOUNG people will develop the skills and knowledge they need to support future employment, education and training opportunities through a NSW Government grant program which opens today.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin said local not-for-profits, community groups and councils are being encouraged to apply for grants of up to $50,000 as part of the NSW Government’s Youth Opportunities program.

“These grants will help young people develop tangible skills to support future employment, education and training opportunities,” Mr Martin said.

“They will also support young people’s participation, engagement, and inclusion in the community.”

The Youth Opportunities grants provide one-off, time-limited grants between $10,000 and $50,000 for programs targeting children and young people aged 12-24 Since the program began in 2012, Youth Opportunities has provided $13.3 million to 282 projects across NSW.

Fish heart mangroves, mangroves heart fish

LAST week we celebrated the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem, a day set by UNESCO. Mangroves are a valuable asset for the atmospheric carbon they sequester, the protection they provide from tidal surges and for the habitat they offer to a multitude of other organisms, many of which are food for humans.

Unfortunately in some areas where foreshore land has been developed mangrove habitat has been cleared in Port Stephens.

The relationship between fish and mangroves is being uncovered by a range of research projects funded by the Fisheries

Research and Development Corporation (FRDC).

Understanding the role mangroves play as habitat for fisheries, can provide greater rationale for their protection.

Commercial species such as Mangrove Jack, Barramundi, Mud Crabs and Banana Prawns, rely on Mangroves as their nursery habitat.

Locally Bream, Flathead, Blue Swimmer Crabs and Mud Crabs use the mangroves as nursery habitats.

A 2020 FRDC-funded study highlighted the role of mangroves as they support the productivity of prawn fisheries around NSW’s Wallis Lake.

Environmental scientists Dr Becky

Schmidt from CSIRO and Dr Ian Cresswell from the University of Newcastle developed this methodology from the business-focused Natural Capital Protocol and the UN’s System of Environmental Economic Accounting, to determine the connections between ecosystem assets, society and the economy.

The research shows effective management of the whole system requires catchment and water management alongside fisheries management, so the direct impacts of both terrestrial and water-based users on the shared natural capital in the estuary can be considered.

Earlier projects, also funded by the FRDC, unravelled the complicated relationships between fishery productivity and estuarine habitats in three NSW estuaries and developed tools to understand the mosaic of habitat types, including mangroves, utilised by different species.

Australia is home to seven per cent of the world's mangroves covering about 11,500 km2.

If we understand it better then we have a greater chance of protecting it and the life it supports.

Community supports pool upgrade

THE community petition for the Tea Gardens pool has reached over 3100 signatures.

The document was created in support of upgrades and renovations to the community pool in Tea Gardens, under the belief that the existing facilities are in need of refurbishment.

Jim Meehan, Chair of the PoolSubcommittee of the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Progress Association told News Of The Area that he is pleased with the result of the petition.

“It’s a fantastic response from the community but it also shows a significant cross section of the public that wants to use the pool.

“From the demand for swim lessons and water safety, right to the disabled and older communities who want therapeutic use of the pool, we’ve seen an excellent response,” Mr Meehan said.

Mr Meehan says that the next step for the progress of the pool will be to set up a steering committee to look into potential designs, cost and responses from the community before looking into grand funding for the project.

“The community has shown their interest and support and now it’s up to us to make it happen,” Mr Meehan said.

The MidCoast Council are currently undertaking observations and project designs to upgrade the pool to make it more accessible for people with disabilities, however at this stage there are no plans for an entire upgrade.

Karuah Rural Fire Brigade calls for volunteers

KARUAH Rural Fire Brigade are recruiting volunteers in the area.

After opening a $1.1 million fire station in late 2020, the NSW Rural Fire Service are looking for people to assist in the Karuah and Swan Bay community.

Secretary of the Karuah Rural Fire Brigade, Jenny Semple spoke to News Of The Area about the reasons volunteers get involved.

“People volunteer for all sorts of reasons: to help protect the community and gain a sense of self-worth, to meet like-minded people and make friends or to gain training or learn new skills,” Ms Semple said.

The Karuah Rural Fire Brigade also assists in a number of community events including the Karuah Oyster Festival, Anzac Day events and services, Boot Sales, Get Ready Weekends, school education and New Year’s Eve safety.

The brigade attends a multitude of different calls from grass and bushfires to flood and storm damage and accidents, providing a number of opportunities for locals

to get involved.

“We have a lovely new station which we haven’t as yet been able to show the community due to COVID-19 restrictions.

“We look forward to this changing in the near future so we can get back to normal, but in the meantime we would love some new members to be trained before this fire season,” Ms Semple said.

At the current moment the Brigade are performing a burn off for private landowners, a water blast on the Karuah Bridge to assist the painting of a new mural as well as a number of large burns to be completed soon.

The NSW RFS work side-by-side with other volunteers and the wider community in fire prevention and awareness with all members providing fire and emergency service to approximately 95% of NSW. The NSW volunteers are the largest volunteer fire service in the entire world.

Australian Technical Advisory

THE Hunter Joint Organisation (JO) has received a $862,000 grant towards their Accelerating Event Economies (A2E) Project through the Bushfire Local Economic Recovery (BLER) Fund run by the NSW Government.

The Hunter Region already has fantastic event capability; however, there is potential for bigger and better events at a regional scale.

This project is focused on unlocking that potential.

A2E will focus on driving economic recovery through identifying systems and processes that will make regional coordination and collaboration simpler and more effective.

These systems and processes will enable the Hunter JO and member councils to collaborate on the potential of creating and delivering a region-wide events.

Cr Bob Pynsent, Chair of the Hunter JO and Mayor of Cessnock, said this funding will be paramount to boosting the tourism industry.

“The Hunter region has so much to offer across our ten council areas, and this project presents a great opportunity for our councils to collaboratively and cohesively promote the region, enabling economic recovery in the aftermath of the bushfires and floods we have experienced over the last two years,” said Cr

Bob Pynsent.

“By using a regional lens to focus on visitor economies and event attraction, we can enable economic stimulus across the whole of the Hunter, with positive benefits for all of our communities.”

The A2E project will deliver outcomes through establishing a regional partner task group, undertaking an Events and Opportunities Audit, and creating destination and event management resources required at a regional scale.

These actions are projected to result in a range of positive social and economic outcomes and public benefits for the Hunter region. A2E will aim to strengthen the region’s collective voice as a visitor and event destination, increase the capacity of Councils through shared resources, and enable councils to collaboratively pitch for major events.

Mayor of MidCoast Council, Cr David West, sees the project as an opportunity to rebuild, shoring up the economic resilience of the Hunter’s communities.

Census To Shine A Light On Homelessness

By Marian SAMPSON DESPITE lockdowns and all that has been happening in the world it is time to stand and be counted.

The Census in Australia, officially the Census of Population and Housing, is the national census in Australia that occurs every five years.

The Census will be conducted on 10 August.

Five years ago, the 2016 Census showed 116,427 people across the country were without a safe, secure place to sleep at night.

Mission Australia CEO, James Toomey said, “Contrary to common belief, homelessness goes beyond those who we see sleeping on the streets or in their cars – in fact these people who were rough sleeping only made up seven per cent of the 116,000 people who were homeless on Census night five years ago.

“The bigger picture is that most people and families experiencing homelessness are hidden from plain sight.

“We know from the most recent Census data that the majority are living in severely crowded dwellings, couch surfing temporarily with friends or family, or living in crisis accommodation, a shelter, refuge or boarding house.

“To gauge the severity of the problem in 2021 and better understand how COVID-19 and the housing crisis has affected homelessness numbers in Australia, we call on everyone who is living in insecure, unsafe and temporary places to participate in the Census and have their voices counted.

“For the Census data to truly reflect the extent of homelessness, it is important that everyone who is homeless – including those who may not previously have realised they’re homeless – report their living situation

Mr Toomey says people should follow the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ advice to accurately report on their living situation on Census night.

They can do this by reporting their suburb as NONE and if they have no accommodation NONE - CRISIS. “This applies to people who are sleeping rough, as well as people who are couch surfing or if they are away from home due to eviction or a family dispute.

Sadly there are people living in our region who will identify this way in the Census.

“By accurately reporting the scale of the homelessness problem in Australia, we can gain a greater understanding of what actions are sorely needed to end homelessness in our nation altogether.

“There are many reasons why people face homelessness – for some it’s family breakdown, domestic and family violence, job loss or financial or psychological distress, while for others it’s simply the sheer lack of affordable housing.

“Right now we know that there is a severe lack of available affordable rentals in regional, rural and remote areas.

The rental market in Port Stephens has squeezed out many and there is an acknowledged lack of affordable rental properties available for those in need.

Bulahdelah CWA Celebrates Serving Their Community For 90 Years

There is an active CWA Branch in Bulahdelah that has been running for the past 90 years!

Stroke - Every Second Counts

IT’S national stroke week.

In the event of a stroke, remember that time is the most important element to consider - every second counts.

Management of a stroke as soon as possible has a direct link to patient outcomes.

This Monday, 2 August, marked the start of National Stroke Week, an initiative aimed at raising awareness around stroke detection.

More than 56,000 strokes will be experienced by Australians this year - that is one stroke every nine minutes.

Strokes are the leading cause of disability in Australia and the third most common cause of death, affecting 25% of working age Australians.

Unfortunately, despite these alarming statistics, many Australians don’t know the warning signs or how to help if they encounter someone suffering from a stroke.

This National Stoke Week, St John Ambulance NSW want to change this.

A stroke occurs when there is a lack of oxygenated blood getting to the brain, which may be caused by a bleed or a clot in one of the

arteries.

This can cause a variety of symptoms, and it’s important to recognise these signs fast, so you can act swiftly to minimise the damage caused.

St John Ambulance NSW, CEO, Sarah Lance says that the longer a stroke remains untreated, the greater the chance of stroke-related brain damage.

“Strokes can often be difficult to detect, so knowing how to recognise when a stroke is happening is the first step. That recognition can mean the difference between life and death.

“This is where the FAST test comes in,” she said.

So, how do we identify the signs of a stroke?

It’s as simple as remembering the acronym F.A.S.T. Using the F.A.S.T test involves asking these simple questions: FACE: Check their face. Has their mouth dropped?

ARMS: Can they lift both arms?

SPEECH: Is their speech slurred? Do they understand you?

TIME: Time is critical. If you see any of

the CWA and its members have always been there.

From small towns to regional centres the CWA plays a vital role connecting the community and tying it together with their very apron strings.

The CWA is also an organisation that advocates for the bush and its people.

Most recently they have been lobbying against ‘zombie’ Petroleum Exploration Licences (PELS) covering valuable agricultural land, saying it was time for confidence to be restored for the people who call these regions home and who relied on the land for their livelihoods.

They are also advocating for safety at railway level crossings.

The CWA is actively working to make positive changes in areas including: advocating for the use of Australian wool insulation products to be used in development and refurbishment of NSW and ACT Public Building and Housing; supporting and advocating for the establishment of the proposed Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy Rewilding of these signs, call 000 straight away.

The signs and symptoms of stroke are a sudden decrease in level of consciousness; weakness or paralysis, especially on one side of the body; feeling of numbness in face, arm or leg; difficulty speaking or understanding; unexplained dizziness; disturbed vision; loss of balance; and confusion.

In an emergency, call triple zero (000) for an ambulance.

If you are able to assist someone while waiting for emergency services, be calm and reassure the patient.

For conscious patients; support their head and shoulders on pillows; loosen tight clothing; maintain body temperature; wipe away secretions from mouth and ensure their airway is clear and open.

For unconscious patients; place them in recovery position; and make sure that a call for an ambulance has been made on 000.

Strokes are often thought of as something that happens to older Australians but they can also affect younger people.

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare tells us, “In 2017–18, there were almost 40,000 acute care hospitalisations with a principal diagnosis of stroke, at a rate of 133 per 100,000 population.

They are also actively lobbying the NSW Government to make additional funding available for rural and remote Local Health Districts and action to address the failure of age care service delivery in NSW and for the development of a single co-ordinated mental health service information and referral resource in towns to provide immediate clarity, connection and assistance as part of the overall measures for suicide prevention in communities and to provide sufficient face to face acute psychiatric services to all local health areas, especially those in rural and remote locations.

The reach is large and the association is also actively monitoring and advocating in the instance of, threatened or sudden closure of banking services in rural, regional and remote communities, an issue that is currently impacting Medowie and other local towns.

Women living in regional and rural areas can find their local CWA Branch at www. cwaofnsw.org.au. higher among males than females (1.4 times as high), and most hospitalisations (73%) were for people aged 65 and over.

“The average length of stay for stroke patients in acute hospital care was 7 days in 2017–18. “Stroke patients in rehabilitation care had an average length of stay of 24 days.”

There is some good news, stroke is often preventable because many of its risk factors are modifiable.

“These include biomedical risk factors such as high blood pressure, insufficient physical activity, overweight and obesity, and tobacco smoking.

The stylish and surprisingly political affair follows 12-yearold Atari (voice of Koyu Rankin) and his dog Spots (Liev Schreiber), who have been separated after a public health order in the fictional city of Megasaki amid an outbreak of dog flu saw the mayor deport all dogs to an island of landfill. THE ladies’ July Monthly Mug was played last Wednesday.

B.Gordon had a great day, winning the mug with 73n, the Jackpot and the putting comp.

On Thursday July 29 the Vets played a Single Stableford and the winner was G.Buck with 43 pts.

R/Up was I Knox with 39 pts on a c/b from A.Barden.

NTPs were R.Callaghan, K.Hughes and G.Buck.

Saturday 31 was a beautiful day for July’s Monthly Mug. The A Grade winner was T.Styles with 71n, and R/Up was A.Benson with 73n. B Grade and Mug winner was B.Towner with a terrific 60n

and R/Up was J.Stellema with 71n. Ladies’ Mug winner was B.Gordon with 72n and the R/ Up was T.Stellema with 73n.

NTPs were M.Haynes (x2), J.Stellema, G.Buck & B.Gordon.

Longest drivers were D.Harvey, T.Styles, A.Jobson & B.Gordon.

Progress Report

By Gordon GRAINGER AGAIN, we have been unable to have meetings of the Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association (PA) and the Southern Area Reference Group due to Covid restrictions and suffice to say, we have little to report in the way of new developments.

The PA Subcommittee dealing with the public pool has had successful meetings with Council and are reporting separately.

We can advise that since our last report, Council staff are again restricted to home, Council elections are deferred to December and on the local front, little has happened.

We are still waiting on a decision re the oneway proposal on the bridge footpaths.

The new boat launching ramp in Tea Gardens is still in the planning stage and will definitely not be in use in time for the Christmas traffic.

Grant money of $6,000 was received for the “Environmental Stabilisation of the Myall River Foreshore” and work was done on an area needing the most work, approximately 30 m long.

Council contributed a further $8,000 to

As the foreshore needing attention is nearly 1 kilometre long, it may be some time before final completion.

The ladies of Hawks Nest have again shown their artistic skills and have painted a mural on the wall of the convenience building adjacent to the Community Hall.

A fantastic job ladies!

Now you have your chance to provide murals on the water tanks on Shearwater where Council have selected the site as one of their two mural trails.

In other related news, we can advise that the Myall River Chamber of Commerce has conducted their AGM and are proud to present their new committee with Alison Howell as President.

She has an active and vibrant committee behind her who have updated their website which can be accessed through https://www.myallcoastchamberof commerceandtourism.com.

Under current Covid restrictions, businesses are doing it tough and our local business houses are no exception.

The newly established and burgeoning Myall Tours has suspended all activities due tourist exposure and the local Tourist Information Centre has also closed.

Our local businesses also rely heavily on the annual Myall River Festival, which unfortunately has had to cancel once again this year.

It is imperative that we, the local community, support our people.

Shop locally whenever possible.

Stay in town and stay safe.

It is overwhelming, isn't it. Day in, day out.

Waiting for 11am, which used to be reserved for morning tea and perhaps a piece of cake but is now the hour when we wait for the pressers and the politicians to announce the latest set of figures. It can feel quite relentless, so instead of my usual cynicism and devil-may-care attitude, I've decided to offer the advice I'm trying to stick to, which has been gleaned from a range of different sources.

Limit the amount of time you listen to the news.

This may seem a weird thing to recommend from a column in a newspaper, but really, you can absorb all the Coronavirus news you require in a very short time span. Just allocate 10-15 minutes a day instead of dipping into newsfeeds every waking moment.

There's very little good news around in the headlines and it can become quite depressing.

Try to find one thing you enjoy and devote an hour a day to it. It may be playing a board game with your kids (if anyone finds that enjoyable) or gardening or going for a walk along the beach or drawing or listening to your favourite music. It's important to have something to look forward to.

There are a lot of polarising views at the moment on social media, so I'd suggest removing yourself from conversations or threads that are just going to upset you. There will be countless perspectives and ideologies floating around and if someone has a very firm view, there's not a whole lot of point trying to change it. It is better to perhaps unfollow anyone who is making you clench your teeth so tightly that you are discovering your jawline again.

Try a book. Books don't argue back. Books don't have a comments section. Books can take you into an alternate world and give you a chance to inhabit a different experience. If reading isn't your thing, maybe try a podcast. There are some incredibly inspiring people around and listening to them can help your own frame of mind.

COUNCIL Round-Up

By Cr Len ROBERTS Tea Gardens Visitor Centre IN my last column I may have inadvertently given the impression that the CTC was receiving $10,000 PA from Council.

That is not the case and I apologise to the wonderful CTC management team

if it caused any angst.

The council figure was the amount the Council spent in operational costs as a “landlord”.

The CTC and volunteers saved Council (ratepayers) many thousands of dollars through their efforts.

They cannot be thanked and appreciated enough.

We have many volunteers assisting the Council in many ways across the shire and their value is immeasurable not only financially but also in community enhancement.

Bulahdelah Highway Service Centre Council received a letter of offer from the proponent of the Bulahdelah Highway Service Centre Planning Proposal to enter into a Voluntary Planning Agreement with Council to offset any potential initial adverse impacts that their proposed development may have on the Bulahdelah business community.

In summary, the proponent has offered to pay Council $500,000 to mitigate the initial potential adverse impacts that their

proposed highway service centre may have on the Bulahdelah business community.

These funds are to be spent by Council on items that will benefit the Bulahdelah township and the Bulahdelah business community.

These funds must be spent on items that fall under the following categories: 1. public domain improvements, to items such as streets/roads, parks and foreshore areas (e.g. lighting, landscaping, seating, signage); 2. general business assistance available to all Bulahdelah businesses (e.g. marketing, merchandising, website advice/tutorials); 3. RV-friendly town improvements (e.g. a designated RV parking area).

In addition, the proponent also agrees to provide for local promotions within the highway service centre, either in the form of an area for advertising/brochures or via digital means.

This offer is seen as a genuine attempt to offset any potential initial adverse impacts of their proposed development.

It is important to remember that such agreements are voluntary, that we have a willing proponent and that the VPA will be placed on the title of the land and hence be an obligation on any future landowner.

The plan will be exhibited for comment.

Council Elections The council elections have been postponed until 4 December 2021.

In answer to many who have asked the question if I will be standing, the answer is yes, and thank you so much to the many who encouraged me to do so.

I have put together a great local team with Sandra Bourke and Arthur Baker from Bulahdelah.

I have finally been dragged into the digital communication age and I now have a Facebook page.

Given the worry of covid restrictions there will probably be an emphasis on postal and online voting.

By Lynda RICHARDS TUESDAY 27 July: Social bowls played three games of Triples Dawn May, Pam Gilchrist and Robyn Beaumont had a lead of seven by the 5th end bowling against Jill McBride, Dorothy Thompson and Sandra Leisemann.

On the 16th end with just two ends to be bowled Robyn’s team were still in front by two shots, 17 v 15, Sandra’s team pulled off a miracle (or bowled extremely well) adding four shots to their tally on the 17th end and another four on the 18th end, winning 23 v 17.

An interesting contest on the next rink score on the 10th end Ingrid Luck, Dawn Jones and Irene Roberts 12 v Bette Saillard, Judi Polak and Karen Green 5.

Score on the 15th end, Irene’s team 12 v Karen’s team 17, the tides had turned.

Perhaps the thought of defeat spurred Irene’s ladies on they won the next three ends, claiming victory 21 v 17.

Jean Glover, Wendy Jones and Maynie Roberts led all the way in their match v Sue Morris, Bev Rhodes and Karen McPhie winning 23 v 10.

The winners on the day winning with the highest margin were Jean, Wendy and Maynie.

Ingrid Luck was the lucky raffle winner, many thanks to The Garden Eatery for their generous donation of the raffle prize.

Karuah Roos and Rooettes

THE Roos travelled to Clarencetown on Saturday to take on the Cobras.

In what was a must win game for both teams in the race to make the semi-finals, both teams turned up to play.

The game started with some hard hitting defence from both teams until Clarencetown broke through with the opening try from a high kick.

With the conversion successful, Clarencetown took a six nil lead.

In what was a defensive style game the Cobras scored another try through a kick and converted to take an early 12-0 lead.

In the hot weather the game was played in quarters.

After the resumption of the second quarter, with play going from one end of the field to the other, the Roos broke through just before half time.

Luke Perry put a kick

over the top, regathered and scored next to the posts for Sam Croese to convert.

The Cobras took a 12-6 lead into the main break.

The second half started like the first, with Clarencetown scoring two quick tries, but missing both conversion attempts.

This took the Cobras lead to 20-6 before the Roos then gained some much needed ball and momentum.

With some slick backline play Luke Perry put Adam Crampton away down the sideline for the first of his two tries with a conversion attempt successful from Sam Croese to take the score to 20-12 in favour of the Cobras.

With some punishing defence from Mitchell Napier, Tyson Peters Josh White, Neil Baker and Nathan Ritzau the Roos began to build some pressure and with eight minutes left on the clock Pat Maloney made a decisive run into the defence line and got an offload away to Dwayne Fleming who went over to score, taking the score to 2016.

From the kick off with three minutes to go Adam Crampton went in to score his second try of the day taking

the score to twenty all.

With the crowd in his ear Sam Croese stepped up to take the conversion attempt as the full time siren rang.

Sam put the ball through the posts to give Karuah what looked like an unlikely victory 22-20 against a tough Cobras outfit.

Unfortunately Karuah player Jake Langdon suffered what looks like broken ribs for the second time this season in what was a very physically tough game and we all wish him speedy recovery.

Player’s player three points Mitch Napier, two points Adam Crampton and one point Neil Baker, Coaches Award Josh White and Sponsors Choice was Tyson Peters.

Meanwhile, the Rooettes were at home against Abermain Hawks, and the game day sponsors were Karuah Quality Meats and Tile in Style.

The Rooettes Kayla Campbell was first to score and Ebony Oakley converted for 6-0.

Lexi Beaton was unstoppable running in two tries before halftime and with Ebony converting the halftime score was Karuah 18

SPORT Abermain 0.

Second half saw Robyn Draper cross the line, Ebony converting 24-0.

Then Lexi went in for her hat trick and Ebony converted another for 30/0.

Captain Tamara Lilley was next to score and with Ebony's boot on fire to convert her sixth try of the day to take the full time score to Karuah 36 Abermain 0.

Players Player three points went to Chantelle Gallagher, two points to Tamara Lilley and one point to Robyn Draper. Coaches Award was Kayla Campbell and Sponsors Choice was Lexi Beaton.

Next Saturday is the last double header at home for the season with the Rooettes taking on Dora Creek kicking off at 1.30 and the Roos taking on top of the table Stroud kicking off at 3pm.

It will also be our Old Boys Day, followed by a Benefit night at the Yacht Club for Ben Langdon's girls.

LAWN Bowls, while an easy game to learn and play can at the same time be simple and complicated.

It’s also true that it has many variations upon its main theme.

Trevor Barclay, Karuah Bowls Clubs Senior Umpire agrees, saying, “While It's true that you always want your bowl to be closest to the jack, there are many ways of achieving that depending on which game you are playing.”

Bowlers can play in teams of four, three in triples, two in pairs and one in singles.

Each of those games can be either of mixed genders, or of only one gender.

Karuah Bowls Club Game Secretary Stephen ‘Gillie’ Gilchrist said, “That to make it even more interesting, each style of the different varieties can be played with a different number of bowls, four, three,

two or in a game newly introduced, only one bowl per bowler, each end.”

This last weekend, Karuah Bowlers played a particularly popular variety of this great game, mixed pairs.

In this fast paced game, one bowler of each gender is in each team and players four bowls in two separate turns at the mat per end.

Kay Freeman, the Ladies President at Karuah said, “Anyone who thinks that bowls is a sedentary sport should try mixed pairs, 84 bowls and 42 trips up and then back on the green can be quite a work out.”

Long story short, there is a game of bowls for every one.

As well as both genders, there is huge diversity on bowling greens.

Ages vary from primary schoolers through to the odd pensioner, all cultures, ethnicities and drinking habits are accepted and catered for.

If you’d like to give the game a try, simply ring the Club at Karuah, you will be made very welcome.
