By Margie TIERNEY NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian came to Tea Gardens last Friday, armed with $1,000,000 to spend on the local Police Station.

News of her impending visit had spread quickly through the community and more than a hundred locals had gathered outside the Station on Marine Drive to hear what the Premier had to say.

“I’m so pleased to be here,” the Premier said.

“As I announced a few days ago, we have a record budget for Police this year and because of that, I’m pleased to say there will be a $1,000,000 upgrade of Tea Gardens Police Station.”

She went on to say, “The Police are the pillars

Craig Jackson, Superintendent for Port Stephens and the Hunter told News Of The Area, “The money will be very welcome and very well spent here at Tea Gardens for an upgrade to the Police Station.”

The decision on how the money will be spent is still to be made.

“It gives us a few options and what that looks like we’re not sure, but it’s a win for local Police and a win for the community,” Superintendent Jackson said.

The container was just one of 83 lost from a cargo ship bound for Sydney last Friday.

The accident happened in rough seas off Port Stephens, the container ship on a voyage from Taiwan.

Two more containers were spotted floating off Fingal Bay and Maritime Services issued a warning to shipping and boats to be on the lookout, as many of the containers were thought to be floating just below the surface.

“I can tell you it’s a mess,” local Julie Sims told News Of The Area.

“Plastic bags, plastic containers, food wrappers, nappies, surgical masks, it’s all washing up on the foreshores and then blowing into the dunes and bush.”

Remarkably, some of the cargo washed up included clocks bound for Ikea.

A small army of brave souls battled the elements to do what they could to clean up the area, but the rain and an afternoon high tide made it a challenging task.

“Roads and Maritime Services in collaboration with the owners and insurers of the ‘YM Efficiency’ are working to locate, identify and secure containers that have come ashore, predominantly in the Port Stephens region,” Marnie Procter from RMS

told News Of the Area.

“Debris has been confirmed at Jimmy’s Beach inside Port Stephens and Rocky Point near Anna Bay.” Maritime Services sent a number of photos to News Of The Area of the debris and damage to the ship.

“Other debris found at Fingal Head includes some high and low density foam likely to be from the container and packing materials.”

“I suspect we’ll be collecting this stuff for weeks but we just need to stay on top of it until the ocean stops spitting it up.”

The weekend of shocking weather also caused more erosion and damage at the Winda Woppa end of Jimmy’s Beach.

Resident Ken Garrard said, “The Geo-matting that has been used to form the substructure and the substructure itself remains pretty much intact except for being marginally undercut.”

“Council works crew have already been to the site and placed protective barriers.”

Boomerang Raffle Winners

By Margie TIERNEY RAFFLE winners at the big three, the Hawks Nest Golf Club, Tea Gardens Country Club and Tea Gardens Hotel, had more to celebrate than just winning a tray of meat or seafood last week.

The first 10 lucky winners also received a free Boomerang Bag as part of the group’s ongoing initiative to rid the Myall Coast of plastic bags.

“Everyone involved had a brilliant time and the conversations about why we need to cut back on single use plastics seemed to get through,” Brooke Feltis said.

“The raffle nights were definitely a success with raising awareness about plastic pollution being the main objective.”

The Boomerang Bag movement also received a commitment from the Tea

Gardens Country Club General Manager, Warren Gooley.

Brooke said, “Not only was the Club completely behind the ‘plastic free’ concept, the patrons were also incredibly supportive, so much so that Boomerang Bags were sold out before the raffles were drawn.”

“Warren Gooley, said he was more than happy to phase out the use of plastic bags for Club raffles.”

“With the help of Dawn Engel and Sue Dempsey, who run the raffles, plastic bags will not be available after July 1st.”

Brooke is also hopeful the Golf Club and Tea Gardens Hotel will follow suit.

The Tea Gardens Hotel has already replaced plastic straws with a paper version.

The Hotel also hosted another sewing bee last Saturday for the busy bees who help create the Boomerang Bags.

As children get older their priorities change, and friends and social groups become increasingly significant to them. This creates a tension between the importance of socialising children and the importance of children spending time with their parents – particularly the parent with whom they do not live.

The Family Law Act obligates a parent to do all they can to encourage children to attend with the other parent pursuant to Orders.

It is common for conflict to arise when children want to attend social events at the same time as they are due to spend time with the other parent. Courts have acknowledged this tension, but regularly remind parents of the need to be sensible and display common sense. The Full Court of the Family Court has gone as far as

reminding parents that “…children are not parcels to be passed back and forward at the convenience of parents. Children have lives and routines of their own…” The Court reminds parents that Orders should be seen as providing a template around which they can build the time with their children but, in doing so, parents should try to adopt flexibility and common sense to promote the children’s happiness and well-being. Parents, however, should not underestimate the importance of the other parent in their children’s lives.

Agreement cannot always be reached, and consequently the Court remains available as an avenue for enforcement of Orders.

In such circumstances parents are regularly reminded to consider both the practical utility, and the ultimate effect, of any Court proceedings on their children.

Culture Celebrated COINCIDING with National Reconciliation Week, BoolahDillah at the Bulahdelah Mountain Aboriginal Place was officially opened last week by the NSW Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Sarah Mitchell.

The development and revitalisation of the Mountain comes from a partnership between the Karuah Aboriginal Land Council and NSW Forestry Corporation, providing a unique experience for visitors.

“This land is culturally, spiritually and historically significant for the local Worimi People and now all of us can experience the local culture in this stunning part of the world,” Minister Mitchell said.

The project involved completing tree carvings to mark places of cultural significance, new interpretive signage, the development of a cultural

site with seating and a fire pit and upgrading visitor facilities.

Karuah Land Council CEO Len Roberts said he hopes visitors will come away with an understanding of the history of the area and its significance to the community.

“This is a place that represents all of Bulahdelah - its history and the Aboriginal People have always been closely entwined,” he said.

“Bulahdelah means ‘two teeth’, but the word here also means two things united, showing it’s a place that brings people together which is what reconciliation is about.”

Len said the carvings were completed by a talented team of young Worimi People utilising traditional skills learnt during workshops at the Land Council.

Corporation Senior Manager Kathy Lyons said the Mountain project is an example of what can be achieved through collaboration.

“We have established many good working relationships,” she said.

“We get people involved so they can do traditional activities and gain pride in what they do.”

More than 100 guests were welcomed at the official celebration last week, which included a formal ceremony, traditional dancing, carving demonstrations and guided walks.

Minister Mitchell congratulated the Land Council and Forestry Corporation for their hard work in making the project a success.

THE Bulahdelah Branch of the Country Women’s Association (CWA) marked their 87th anniversary last week with a special Devonshire morning tea.

Joining the celebration, Myall Lakes MP Stephen Bromhead and NSW Minister for Volunteering Ray Williams quickly discovered the CWA sure do know their scones.

“The scones and lemon myrtle cheesecake were sensational,” Minister Williams told News Of The Area.

“Absolutely delicious,” Mr Bromhead added.

Being a celebration, the official guests did not come empty handed, delivering a special Birthday gift of $3,000 in recognition of the CWA’s “remarkable community involvement”.

“The activities undertaken by the CWA to improve the lives of women, children

and families in our local community could not be achieved without the selfless dedication of its volunteers,” Mr Bromhead said.

The Bulahdelah CWA branch kicked off on 31 May 1931 with 20 members under the charge of inaugural President Ruth Pile.

After meeting in members’ homes for decades, the Group moved to the CWA rooms in Wade Park built by Council in 1964.

Branch President Lore Green said although some of their activities have changed over time, the core purpose of helping others has remained the same.

“It’s all about helping out in the community,” she said.

“There’s a new generation coming in and we are doing more things to involve the community to hopefully appeal to the younger ones.”

Class teacher Mrs Elizabeth Smith said although 4mm needles and 8 ply wool will be ideal, they will be grateful for any size or colour.

“All donations will be greatly appreciated and can be left at the school’s front office,” she said.

In making the announcement, the Mayor paid tribute to Steve Embry, who has been the Acting General Manager since January.

“I would like to congratulate Acting General Manager Steve Embry and fellow Directors for their hard work and dedication to ensure we have been able to deliver the best service possible to our community during this transition.”

In accepting the role, Mr Panuccio said he was looking forward to working with the staff and Council of MidCoast to deliver for the community.

“I believe in the benefits of an effective community engagement strategy to plan

and deliver the desired services, facilities and outcomes for the MidCoast community. I appreciate and enjoy the role that local Government can play in bringing the community together.”

Mr Panuccio said he is looking forward to relocating to the area, and plans to spend lots of his free time exploring the region and getting to know the community.

“Outside of work I am a keen golfer, social tennis player and restorer of old cars. My current project is a 1977 Holden Statesman – you may hear it around the area” he explained.

$100 Million for Roads THE fight may have been long and hard, but MidCoast Council finally has $100M to spend on fixing local roads.

Labelled historic by Myall Lakes MP Stephen Bromhead, the significant injection of funding comes from a partnership between the NSW Government and MidCoast Council, with each chipping in $50 million.

“Never before has a Government partnered with a local Council anywhere in regional NSW to deliver a package for local roads and bridges,” Mr Bromhead said.

The funding announcement was made by Premier Gladys Berejiklian, Deputy Premier John Barilaro, Minister for Roads and Freight Melinda Pavey and Mr Bromhead following a community cabinet meeting in Forster last week.

Ms Berejiklian said the maintenance blitz will dramatically improve the safety and drivability of 70 kilometres of roads across the region.

“We are about saving lives and also about improving connections between the communities and villages,” Ms Berejiklian said.

Twenty-five road projects have been listed for upgrades as part of the four-year $100 million package, with Council’s $50 million contribution fully funded by the special rate variation.

Mr Bromhead said The Lakes Way and The Bucketts Way are on the list of projects.

“Markwell Road between Bulahdelah and Gloucester will also be upgraded which will mean sealed roads all the way from Bulahdelah through to Tamworth,” he said.

Overcome with emotion, Mayor David West said, “it doesn’t get better than this for regional NSW”.

“It is a truly significant moment for the MidCoast community - this injection of funds will take us a long way to address a generational backlog of roadworks,” he said.

“This could not have been achieved without the generosity of the State Government and the foresight of MidCoast Council to successfully raise funds through a special rate variation which was supported by the local community.”

Mr Bromhead said he was thrilled to be delivering a “phenomenal amount of money” and upholding his long-held commitment to residents.

“People who live in the region, and who pass through the region, are about to witness a transformation of our vast road network,” he said.

The Premier, Ministers and Mayor West all acknowledged “the great efforts” of Mr Bromhead, who “campaigned furiously” to secure the funding.

NORTH Arm Cove’s Biggest Morning Tea was a roaring success, with a total of $2,050 raised for cancer research.

Entries in the Lavender and Lace competition were many and varied, from socks, hats, gloves, bears and dolls to mosaic work.

The standard of work was very high and the judges had a

tough task selecting the winners.

They were Cheryl Fleming from Karuah, who won the People’s Choice Award, Annette Searle, also from Karuah who won Judges Choice, Joan Williams, Robin Hadden and Kay Furley from North Arm Cove.

Approximately 70 guests enjoyed a Devonshire Tea and browsed the sale tables.

After the judging was over, the competition items were put up for silent auction and most were quickly snapped up. Lots of raffle prizes were up for grabs, resulting in more than 20 lucky winners.

WITH the end of the official search for the downed airliner MH 370 after 4 years since it went missing, it might be time to ask the tough questions in relation to its disappearance and what needs to be done to simplify trying to find aircraft that have similarly vanished off the radar.

The expectation was that all aircraft should be fitted with transponders or GPS devices to immediately show where they are at any one time whilst on long flights and of course at night.

The issue with MH 370 seems to have been that its transponder was switched off manually from inside the cockpit in order to disguise its location from that moment onwards. The response was logical that transponders , beacons and GPS location devices should be fitted in a place on each aircraft that made interfering with them from both inside and outside the cabin, impossible.

But where are we up to with this very basic but vitally important solution and one would have thought somewhat simple to mandate and design. Is this now regulation world wide on commercial aircraft? What

By Sonja EVANS SATURDAY afternoon the Karuah Roos travelled to Paterson to take on top of the ladder Paterson River. Gameday Sponsors were A Johnson Sawmill and Farley Oysters.

It was a very cold and a bit of a wet day.

With the Roos kicking off.

Paterson were the first to score 6 minutes in with a kick across field in front of the try line to the waiting winger, the try was converted to open the score at 6/0. Then another 6minutes later they were in again with another converted try River 12 Roos 0.

They were in again within 2 minutes to take the score to Paterson 18 Karuah 0.

The Roos never gave up the Hitmen in the first half were Daniel Evans, Mitch Turvey, Matt Croese, Ben Feeney, Justin Anderson, Jack Fleming, Josh Page, Dwayne Fleming, Dylon Foley, Kane Chisholme, Tim Johnson, Simi Asomua and Jake Blanch.

With a nice intercept and almost running the full length off the field with under 10 minutes to go in the first half Aiden Bills was in under the red dot for the Roos and with Josh Page converting the score was River 18 Roos 6.

Just over halfway through the second half and the Roos Cap/Coach Daniel Evans was the next to score to take the score to Karuah 16 Paterson 24.

The Roos never say die attitude and backing up a mate paid off with Josh Page in for his second try of the day 2 minutes later to make it a ballgame Roos 20 River 24.

Dear Mr JH, You are, indeed, the sharpest tool in the shed. That is exactly what your mate is doing. You are his time-filler, his afternoon reprieve from clock-watching, his alternative to drive-time radio with all those irritating commercials.

I once had a mate (yes, only once) and I’m not sure what his job title was, but he pretty much had the same job as Homer Simpson.

He just had to hang around in case there was some kind of emergency, which there never was, and keep his hand vaguely near the big red button on his desk. Other than that, he had nothing to do. So, of course, he would call and say he was bored. I wasn’t bored. I was doing the washing and helping the kids with homework and cooking dinner, but he had all the time in the world, and wanted to talk about all manner of things so his shift wouldn’t be so painfully monotonous.

At first I just thought he really liked talking to me. Pretty soon I cottoned on to the fact that he only liked talking to me if he was also getting paid $50 an hour from his boss.

It was sort of like the reverse of a phone-sex chat I guess – definitely no sex, only dull and dreary conversation at my expense.

The same goes for those annoying phone calls people make on their Bluetooth.

Not only are they taking up precious time, but every time they drive through the phone drop-out zones (pretty much half of Port Stephens), you get eleven words out of every sixty, like this: ‘So I really need to tell you about it. Are you ready? ……………. and that’s how I got into pyramid selling essential oils.’

Actually, come to think of it, maybe it is for the best that you only hear half the conversation.

I recommend calling your mate at 3am and tell him you’ve got a job night packing and you just needed to hear his voice and tell him all about stock rotation. He’ll never call you again.

MidCoast Council will be carrying out aerial herbicide spraying at various locations along our coastal strip, for the control of Bitou Bush. Scheduled works will occur on a number of days during the month of June 2018, weather permitting.

This activity is undertaken as a part of a broader, collaborative and coordinated program with other public authorities and land management agencies on the Mid North Coast of NSW. Council’s contractor, experienced in aerial spraying, will be following recommendations contained within the “best practice guidelines for aerial spraying of Bitou Bush in New South Wales”, as published by The Department of Environment and Conservation, Natural Heritage Trust and National Parks and Wildlife Service.

Two herbicides will be utilised within different areas determined by site specific requirements.

Lynx WG (Metsulfuron methyl 600g/Kg) will be applied at 20 – 30g/ha or Macspred Glymac 360 (Glyphosate 360g/L) will be applied at 2 L/ha. These herbicides will be applied, as per requirements of APVMA off label permit 12251 for the control of Bitou Bush in coastal sand dunes, bushland and grass land.

Master Swimmers hit the Water

WINTER is well and truly on our doorstep, but the intrepid Myall Masters swimmers are still hitting the water and competing.

12 swimmers headed down to the Central Coast late last month for the Ettalong Pelicans meet.

“The team of Colin Bertram, Leon Bobako, John Coles, Brad Jenson, Peter Kellaway, Chris Lock, Ronnie & Warwick Nichols, Christine Sefton, Linda Stubbs, Sharon Taylor & Allan Wilson were successful in earning our

club 390 points,” Valerie Mobbs said.

“Christine Sefton, Ronnie Nichols, Sharon Taylor and Linda Stubbs placed second in the Women’s 200 freestyle relay in the 200+ age group.”

“In the men’s relay we entered two teams in the 280+ age group with the team of Leon Bobako, Allan Wilson, Peter Kellaway and Chris Lock placing second and the team of John Coles, Warwick Nichols, Colin Bertram and Brad Jenson taking out third place.’’

33 Clubs attended the meet with 242 swimmers

taking to the water in 19 events ranging from 25 metre Freestyle to 100 metre Butterfly.

The Myall Masters, with just 12 swimmers came in a very respectable seventh place.

“This is a fantastic achievement for our club considering many of the clubs competing have an indoor pool which allows them to continue their training all year round.”

Valerie added, “Well done to all, great achievement.”

By Lynda RICHARDS TUESDAY 29th May: A good turn up at bowls today and great to see the return of some of our members who have been absent either due to health matters or holidaying.

Format for play 3 games of 2 bowls Triples, 18 ends. A game of Fours with Dianne Kiss playing “swinger lead”, 14 ends. A convincing win to Sandra Leisemann, Wendy Brand and Elizabeth Kelly 25 v Francis Betar, Sheril Johnson and Julie Kennedy 12. Very impressive since Sandra, Wendy and Liz are amongst those bowlers who have been absent, demonstrates what good bowlers these ladies are.

Bev Stephens, Lily Smith and Dale Winter proved to be too strong an opposition against Bette Saillard, Robyn Webster and Loretta Baker winning by 8 shots, 19 v 11. A close contest between Bev Dunn, Dorothy Thompson and Jill McBride16 v Judi Polak, Lyn Nightingale and Jo Younghusband 14. The Fours game resulted in a win for Dianne Kiss, Wilma Drake, Christine Fossey and Lynne Green 17 v Dianne, Pauline Perry, Jeanette Emmett and Deyonne Page 9.

Robyn Beaumont, Maynie Roberts and Kayelene Pearson competed in the Newcastle District Triples Competition held 28th 30th May. What “ a tough ask “ was this competition. Two games played each day just a break for lunch. Unlucky if your morning contest was a long one, not much time left for lunch. Congratulations to our Tea Gardens team Runners Up. Unfortunately defeated by our “arch rivals” from Lemon Tree Passage 24 v 17. This is a first for a Tea Gardens team to achieve such an honour.

Continuing on the glory trail, following this competition Robyn Beaumont travelled down to Warilla to compete in the NSW Indoor Singles Competition. Robyn won her section and proceeded to the knockout, here she bowled to the last 8 bowlers. On her 3rd game she lost to Sarah Boddington, a NSW state bowler. Officially Robyn finished equal 5th and has qualified for the Australian Indoor Singles Competition to be held at Tweed Heads in August. Great bowling Robyn, what an advocate for our club.
