Sister Libbey joined the Sisters of Charity in 1979 at age twenty-six and moved to the Myall Coast Parish in 2016.

When asked what she has enjoyed most during her time in the Myall Coast Parish she replied, “The people.”

“I heard a faint alarm and got up to investigate what it was; I thought maybe it was at the neighbour's house.”

“I came out of our bedroom and the house was full of smoke.”

“We walked around trying to find the source, and our neighbours came over because they had heard the alarm going off too.”

“One of our neighbours saw that a light in the main room had a hole burned right through it and then saw that the chair was smouldering.”

“We were very lucky.”

Deputy Captain of Fire and Rescue NSW, Dean Chester, said that there’s no doubt that the smoke detectors saved their lives.

“It’s a busy time of year for us for house fires.”

“People are getting out their heaters, but also overloading their powerboards and electrical devices.

“If the smoke detectors didn’t go off, it would have been a very different story.”

Mr Chester said to be extra careful of the placement of certain furniture and items around sources of heat.

He also said that in the case of a fire, turn the power to the house off immediately and keep all of the doors and windows closed to keep the oxygen levels down.

Mrs Wilkinson continued, “The firefighters were great and very thorough, checking the house with a CO2 detector to make sure it was safe for us to return inside.”

Fire and Rescue NSW advises to test your smoke alarm batteries every month by pressing and holding the test button for at least five seconds until you hear the beeps.

You should also remove dust from smoke alarms every six months, and replace batteries every twelve months. By year ten, they recommend replacing all smoke alarms completely.

Education Scholarship for Two YEAR 9 Students, Zahli Conroy and Amia Murphy have been awarded a Harding Miller Education Foundation (HMEF) Scholarship in recognition of their academic achievements.

The scholarships, valued at up to $20,000 over four years, include a new laptop computer, home internet access, face-to-face tutoring and mentoring along with

cash to help with other school expenses.

The HMEF scholarships aim to provide tools and support to lift the educational achievements and career aspirations of girls with high potential.

Zahli and Amia are amongst 136 students from across Australia to receive HMEF scholarships this year who were selected from over

400 applications.

“We are incredibly excited for these outstanding young achievers and look forward to being alongside them and coaching them every step of the way through the next four years, as they learn and grow through high school,” Harding Miller Education Foundation said of the girls.

Zahli Conroy said, “I am very fortunate to have been selected for the scholarship.

The laptop and other resources are very useful, particularly while learning from home during the pandemic.”

“With the assistance the scholarship provides, I am going to keep working hard and achieve the best I can," Zahli said.

Daycares to accept new enrolments

By Ashley CHRYSLER THE Federal Government recently announced the end of their free childcare scheme next month.

The scheme was intended to stop the childcare sector from collapsing as a result of lack of demand, as well as allow for essential workers to continue just that – going to work.

The Federal Government Report found that 86 percent of childcare services said that the scheme helped them remain open, and 87 percent said it allowed them to care for the children of essential workers.

For Dr Sura Abbas, a General Practitioner at

Hawks Nest Medical Centre, this was not the case.

“We were planning on moving from Maitland to Hawks Nest as my Husband and I both work at Hawks Nest Medical Centre.

“We had to put our moving plans on hold due to COVID and the free childcare scheme, since local daycares were unable to take on new enrolments.

“Hopefully the end of the scheme means that we can continue with our plans to move closer to our place of work and have our kids enrolled.”

was more of a burden on business than anything.

“The Government removed family subsidies and replaced it with only 50 per cent of the fees.

“At the time, we had just reopened the service due to a change in ownership and had only just commenced receiving new enrolments.

“The 50 per cent was therefore based on our lower numbers.

“The fact that subsidies resume next month means that we have increased our enrolments and are now nearly at full capacity.

“It’s hopefully onwards and upwards from here.”

The free childcare scheme will end on 12 July.

It is not unusual for a group of people (whether it be two or more) to form a syndicate for the purposes of purchasing a property as an investment.

Usually the owners hold the property as Tenants in Common. The shareholding can be equal or otherwise.

For example, a commercial property may be held by three people, one owning one half and the remaining two owning one quarter each. It is wise for the syndicate to have a partnership agreement. However, if there is no such agreement and if there is a dispute then Section 66G of the Conveyancing Act can assist where one owner would like to sell the property and the remaining owners would like to keep the property.

Section 66G provides that where a property is held in co-ownership (whether as Joint Tenants or Tenants in Common) the Court may, on the application of any one (or more) of the co-owners appoint a Trustee to hold the property in trust for all of the owners for

the specific purpose of selling the property. At the completion of the sale, the nett proceeds of sale are split between the co-owners in the proportions in which they owned the property.

Proceedings under Section 66G are brought in the Equity Division of the Supreme Court and in most cases there is no defence to the proceedings.

In other words, if all of the documentation is in order, and the ownership of the property by the co-owners is established, then the Court will make the Order and vest the property in the Trustees for the purpose of the sale. The Court must be satisfied that the Trustees are suitable for the purpose. It follows that if a property is owned by a group of people that there should be a partnership agreement in place to avoid the possibility of proceedings under Section 66G being brought.

Progress Report for Region

By Gordon GRAINGER ANOTHER month has passed and we have been unable to resume group meetings of the HN/ TG Progress Association (PA), or the Council sponsored Reference Group.

Signs indicate a loosening of restrictions and hopefully these meetings may be able to resume in a few months.

Meanwhile there have been some developments we can report.

MidCoast Council has issued their report card following Community Conversation sessions, and reported in last week’s edition of Nota. A number of community issues have, or are being addressed in TG / HN, as well as Bulahdelah and surrounds and we can advise a few updates.

The application for grant funding for an upgrade of the boat ramp in Hawks Nest was incorrect and the funding applied to the Tea Gardens ramp near the bridge.

We are reasonably confident the grant will be approved and the up grade completed before the holiday season.

As previously reported the Moira Parade ramp and the Hough Street ramps are also in need of upgrading and we are continuing

to liaise with Council.

New signs have been erected on the Singing Bridge asking bicycle riders to dismount when using the footpath and we are awaiting a response regarding the one-way suggestion for motorised wheelchair traffic using the pathway. We understand a traffic committee meeting is to be held in June. This committee is composed of Police, RMS, a representative from Port Stephens Electorate and decisions are made on input from Council. Let us all hope sense will prevail, before a serious accident.

The dredging program for the eastern channel (shortcut) has begun and 15,000 cu.m. has been placed on the stockpile.

The access track to the STS, damaged through erosion has been reinstated and the contractor will place 10,000 cu.m. of sand at that location during the campaign.

A date to place 20,000 cu.m. on Jimmys Beach is yet to be determined and it is expected the program will be completed by end September.

Have also been told the Craft Groups are reopening for customers and participants in early July. Again, social distancing will apply.

International travel on the horizon

The Community Groups I refer to are committed to that end and I note in Mike’s Opinion Letter to the Editor, he only attended a few meetings of the PA. I would like to say to him “You are well travelled, articulate and have the attributes to give us a hand in kicking some goals.

Hopefully you will return to PA when Covid departs.”

Community Announcement – Delay in release of ANU PFAS Study Final Report Due to disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the release of the final report examining the potential health effects resulting from per and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) exposure will be delayed from December 2020 until mid-2021.

The Australian National University (ANU) study has been affected by travel restrictions, demand on pathology services, restrictions on non-essential activities and re-assignment of the researchers to urgent work associated with the pandemic.

The Australian Government understands many people, particularly in the investigation areas of Oakey, Williamtown and Katherine, are concerned about the potential health effects of PFAS. Dedicated mental health and counselling services continue to be available for people who live or work, or have lived or worked in these areas until 30 June 2021. You can access these services through your GP or local Primary Health Network (PHN).

The issue has always been the appearance of the new addition. It is quite sensible, in this day of increasingly sophisticated technology, that such new features be housed in a self contained purpose factory built unit. These can be produced in a production line system under controlled conditions and rolled out to any part of the community. This method should be cheaper than an individually built on-

What seems to have been forgotten in this exercise is that these prefabricated units need to fit into the townscape of the environment into which they are installed.

Here at Tea Gardens we have the police located in the old Court House, a simple and elegant weatherboard structure painted a traditional cream. The external appearance of the new module could, and should, have been finished to harmonise with the existing building. Instead of horizontal boarding to match the Court House the new unit has vertical boarding. Instead of being painted cream to match the adjoining Court House the new module is varnished natural timber.

Visually it is an abomination.

The appearance can easily be fixed.

Cover the front and exposed sides with

horizontal weatherboard painted cream to match the Court House. In doing this include a front gable, again to match the Court House.

This should be simple, quite easy and not expensive.

I can hear the machinations of the public service churning away. To do this would require a contract of work to be prepared and then let. This would require an open public tender which would then have to be adjudicated and then administered. The result would be that a relatively small and inexpensive task would become a major exercise costing many thousands.

Come on! Wake up Australia. We can do better!

KIDS love a bit of independence don’t they. They like to have all the gadgets so they can Snapchat and TikTok and whatever else they have to do.

I can assure you it is not so they can keep in contact with you, and it definitely isn’t so you can reach them. I’m thinking back to when I was 14 and we had two absolutely brilliant options. The first was the phone plugged into the wall with a cord that only stretched about a metre. I’m pretty sure it was designed by helicopter parents so they could eavesdrop whenever you called your friends. Our phone was in the kitchen (yep, just one phone for the entire family) so when my parents wanted the conversation to end, they just started unpacking the dish rack (note, no dishwasher) until I gave up and went and wrote a letter to them instead.

‘What on earth happened when you went out?’ my kids often ask me. Well then you had the pleasure of a pay phone (there are still some of these relics standing). If you wanted to be picked up or chat to a friend you had to stand in the phone booth and if someone else wanted to use the phone, you had to speak quickly.

This system also didn’t have that annoying little tracker app that parents have now, so you could feasibly say you were in Salamander Bay, when you were actually in Darby Street, Newcastle and they’d be none the wiser. That was until they said they’d be there in 10 minutes to pick you up and you had to do some quick thinking, which is why our generation is so quick thinking and devious.

OUR ‘Scallop Club’ was originally formed in 2004 by nine golfing ladies who decided to meet once a month for lunch, wine & cards taking it in turn to go to one of the members houses.

This month was Elsa's turn and it was great to get together again having a break of 3 months because of the virus. We also gave some of our time to remember past members Beverley & Val. Val only recently passed away we were all very sad as we could not attend her funeral. Below is a little "ditty" I made up in 2014 when Beverley & Val were with us and I would like to dedicate this to them.

Bridge Club to open for games Hawks Nest Bridge Club

By Esther DIGBY FOLLOWING the easing of coronavirus restrictions, Hawks Nest Bridge Club is opening for two sessions a week of social bridge commencing on Wednesday 24 June.

In order to comply with current regulations, no more than 20 players will be allowed and the tables grouped together to maintain appropriate social distancing.

A detailed Covid Safety Plan has been developed to ensure rigorous cleaning and sanitizing of the Clubhouse and all equipment.

Of course, this means quite a bit of extra work for all involved but, hopefully, it will be worth it, particularly if members who have not been playing bridge online are able to play again and meet up with old friends.

Local groups , such as Yoga classes, are also able to return to the Club facilities providing they, also, strictly adhere to current requirements and implement a Covid Safe Plan.

Despite the disappointment of not being able to proceed this year, the committee is feeling optimistic about the continuation of the much anticipated event next year.

Miss Johnson said, “We are brainstorming and pursuing new ideas in order to ensure we come back with a bang and make the next festival even better than the last.”
