Government election is shaping up to be the same.

With a bumper field of 69 candidates, MidCoast has enough names on the ballot paper to fill the available positions many times over.

But the biggest challenge, according to Bulahdelah resident, Jack Ireland OAM, will be ensuring equal representation across the entire Council area.

“Local representation is very important, it allows people to have a say on issues that are affecting their areas, and it gives them access to the board,”

Mr Ireland said.

“If you don’t have that local representation, you don’t have a voice.”

Mr Ireland, who served as a councillor on the former Great Lakes Shire for 40 years, said Gloucester, with a population of around 2,970 people, is one of the smaller communities that could struggle to secure representation.

Prior to amalgamation, 25 Councillors represented the three former Councils.

But with only 11 positions available for the entire MidCoast region, equating to one

councillor for every 8,181 residents, hopeful candidates will now need a much larger quota of votes to get them over the line.

This will be almost triple the number of votes needed to claim a seat on former Great Lakes Council, more than double the quota for Taree and 14 times the votes previously needed in the Gloucester Shire.

“The southern part of the shire needs someone to represent them, and Gloucester needs someone as well,” Mr Ireland said.

MidCoast Council represents a region of over 90,000 residents spread over 10,000 square kilometres.

It operates a $320 million per year business with 3,200kms of roads, 542 bridges and 3,000 hectares of open space.

Mr Ireland said council “have a tough job ahead of them” and equal representation across the varied communities is needed.

Book Sale Dates Announced

IT’s still some months away but the Myall Coast Rotary Club is already preparing for its biggest fundraiser of the year its ‘Annual Book Sale’.

Rotary has just announced the dates for the very popular event which attracts hundreds of locals and visitors to the area.

“The dates for the local Rotary Club’s Annual Book Sale are 5-7 January, 2018,” Ian Mackenzie-Smith told News Of The Area.

The sale is held in the Hawks Nest Community Hall in Booner Street.

“Although it may seem a long way off, the Club members are at present madly sorting

the donations of books already on hand,” Ian said.

“There is always room for more and as the ‘Sale’ is Rotary’s principal fundraiser, our generous local Community members are encouraged to drop off any surplus books in their collection.”

The 2017 Book Sale raised more than $10,000 which was then donated to various notfor-profit community organisations Books can be delivered to Pelican Pest Control on Myall Street at Tea Gardens or pick up is available by calling 4997 0984.

Ian however did add, “Unfortunately, as no one seems to

want them these days, sets of encyclopaedias and National Geographics are impossible to sell.”

After the death of a loved one, family members often quarrel over a deceased’s possessions.

Jewellery is frequently fought over.

Unfortunately, the legal costs of taking such disputes to Court are prohibitive which means that whoever has the jewellery is likely to keep it. In Tina Marie Carter v Elizabeth Margaret Law [2017] NSWSC 919 a Judge hearing a dispute over jewellery acknowledged this saying: “It is most unfortunate that a dispute involving the sum of $30,000 could not be resolved without incurring costs”. The Judge’s view was that the costs were likely to equal the amount in dispute. In that case, a mother died leaving her estate to her children in unequal shares. She

appointed two of her children executors of her estate. The executors deducted $30,000.00 from the monies due to be paid to their sister arguing that she had taken her mother’s jewellery before she died and should give credit for it. The sister argued that her mother had gifted the jewellery to her.

Before final orders were made, the Judge ordered that the executors be given the chance to supply evidence as to the value of the jewellery and the fact that the jewellery was in the sister’s possession. To keep the family together, when writing your Will seek advice from your lawyer about the best way, in your particular circumstances, to avoid disputes such as this one.

Lioness Fashion Show

FOR the last few years The Lioness Club of Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest has held a Fashion Show as a fundraising activity to aid worthwhile endeavours in the community. In the past proceeds have been given to the Pre-school, the PCYC and Ronald McDonald House at the John Hunter Hospital.

Last year and again this

year we are extremely lucky to have as our fashion show coordinator Carole Richards.

Carole, originally from the United Kingdom, arrived in Tea Gardens two years ago after twenty three years of living in Spain.

She has coordinated numerous Fashion shows for charity in both Spain and the U.K. Showcasing clothes from local businesses,

Carole produces a lively and entertaining show using local models. Last year was a sell out and was deemed by many to be great fun and a good night out.

This year the Show will be held at the Hawks Nest Community Hall on the 20 October, commencing at 7.30pm. Doors open at 6.45pm.

There will be champagne and light refreshments on

arrival. As last year was a sellout it is advisable to get your tickets early.

They can be purchased shortly at the businesses involved and the Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens pharmacies.

NOMINATIONS for the 9 September MidCoast Council election have closed, with 69 candidates throwing their hats into the ring.

The line-up includes a mixture of the old and new, the familiar and unknown, all vying for one of the 11 Councillor positions.

Eleven groups have nominated, accounting for 64 of the candidates, with only five hopefuls, including Tea Gardens resident, Malcolm Motum, contesting the campaign without the support of an abovethe-line ticket.

Former Great Lakes Deputy Mayor, Len Roberts, has drawn the number one position on the ballot paper, with local residents Alacoque Welsh and Arthur Baker also listed on the seven-person ticket.

Other groups, in the order of the ballot draw, will be headed by former Taree Councillor Brad Christensen, former Gloucester Mayor, John Rosenbaum and former Taree councillor, Peter Epov.

The Liberals team, headed by Forster’s Troy Fowler will be fifth on the ballot sheet with groups lead by former Great Lakes Councillor Karen Hutchinson, former Taree Councillor Kathryn Bell, Independent David West and former Gloucester Deputy Mayor Katheryn Smith, filling the next four positions.

Taree’s Dr David Keegan leads the Country Labor team and former Great Lakes Mayor, Jan McWilliams, heads the final ticket on the ballot, which includes Tea Gardens local and former Great Lakes Councillor, Carol McCaskie.

The MidCoast Mayor and Deputy Mayor will be elected by the Councillors.

Voting is compulsory, and residents need to vote at a polling place in their Council area.

Pre-polling opens on Monday 28 August at the office of the MidCoast Returning Officer at Stockland Forster, Manning Uniting Church in Taree, Gloucester Council Chambers and Raymond Terrace Pre-Poll at 72 Port Stephens Street, Raymond Terrace.

Of the 46 Councils conducting elections, MidCoast is one of the 20 newly amalgamated council areas going to election for the first time.

An Honour They Deserve

By Daniel SAHYOUN VIETNAM Veterans Day Commemoration Services will be held this Friday 18 August, in recognition of the 51st Anniversary of the Battle Of Long Tan. More than 60,000 Australians fought in the Vietnam War, and over 500 lost their lives.

Like many Vietnam Veterans, Bulahdelah RSL sub branch President, Peter Millen, was confronted by the hostile moratorium protest and shunned for his involvement in the war when he returned to Australia.

“We faced bitterness and resentment and were called ‘baby killers’ when we returned home, if you had been in Vietnam you were targeted.” he said.

“After disembarking in Sydney, we walked down the street in our uniforms and were assaulted by antiVietnam protesters, I ended up in hospital and still have a scar from that incident.”

Peter enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) in 1967 and was assigned to

the HMAS ANZAC as a medic.

The following year, at 23 years of age, he was deployed to escort the HMAS Sydney to Vung Tau Harbour in Vietnam.

“It was my first trip,” Peter told News Of The Area.

“In Vung Tau, we sat in anchor and waited, I remember there were so many ships in the harbor and a flyover of about 30 choppers going in all directions.”

Peter said the HMAS Sydney was nicknamed the Vung Tau Ferry as it made 23 trips to Vietnam, transporting thousands of troops, supplies and vehicles.

Peter went on to specialise in hyperbaric medicine, and was drafted to the RAN Clearance Diving Team as a medic.

He was later deployed to Papua New Guinea and the Philippines and was involved in clearing more than 2,000 pieces of unexploded WWII munitions.

Peter said unlike other wars where veterans returned as heroes, “there was no welcome home” for

those who served in Vietnam.

“It wasn’t until 1987 when there was an acceptance march that our service was acknowledged,” he said.

“It is important that all veterans of all conflicts and peacekeeping missions be recognised equally, and not forgotten.”

The sounding of the Last Post at Commemorations this week, will honour the lives lost and sacrifices made.

Vietnam Veterans Day Services Bulahdelah: Commemoration Service at Meade Street Cenotaph commencing at 11.00am.

A sausage sizzle will be held at the Men’s Shed following the service.

Dick Ahmling retires after 17 years in business.

AFTER a solid run spanning almost two decades, Detours Cafe owner, Dick Ahmling, served his final customer last week.

“It is time to retire,” Dick told News Of The Area.

“It has been an enjoyable experience.”

Dick said the best part of his 17 years in business, has been the people he has met.

“I am certainly going to miss that” he said.

The popular Stroud Street eatery in Bulahdelah featured

a robust menu of burgers, light meals and homemade pies and cakes.

“What a little gem,” a reviewer recently stated on TripAdvisor.

“The homemade lamb shank pie was absolutely delicious and the vanilla slice, made on the premises, was to die for.”

The Café has been an integral part of the community, using locally sourced produce and providing employment for more than 20 locals over the years, including several

apprentices.

From Monday 21 August, Tea Gardens Library along with Libraries across the MidCoast will be celebrating Children’s Book Week.

TEA GARDENS local Jennifer Gimbert has taken a leaf out of the Leyland Brothers motto of ‘Travel all over the countryside’.

It’s been a busy couple of months for the owner of Black Possum Fabrics and Beads with no let up in sight.

She recently moved her store to new premises on Myall Street, ironically opposite to where she opened the doors of her first business in Tea Gardens 35 years ago.

“We started off as

a video shop and got bored with that,” Jennifer laughingly told News Of The Area.

“Then we started a sewing and gift shop.”

Jennifer has always had a passion for sewing and it now takes her all over the country.

“We recently did the ‘Craft Alive Show’ in Wagga Wagga,” Jennifer said.

“They show off very different crafts down there, from paper craft to woodworkers.”

From Wagga Wagga it was off to Penrith in Sydney’s west for the ‘Mad

Quilters Expo’.

“We’ve been doing that for 10 years,” Jennifer said.

Over the years, Jennifer has travelled to Craft Shows all over the country, from Broken Hill to Brisbane.

Next she’s off to the small town of Talbingo in the New South Wales Snowy Mountains before heading to Logan and Toowoomba in Queensland.

Tamworth and Orange are also on the agenda.

Luckily Black Possum is a family run store with 3 generations of Gimberts keeping the home fires burning.

WITH less than one in 10 children and adolescents meeting the Australian Dietary Guidelines recommended serves for vegetables per day, the Nestlé Healthy Active Kids program is giving primary schools across the country the chance to win The Kitchen Kart.

Valued at $25,000, the fully-equipped, mobile teaching kitchen, will help teachers to deliver nutrition and cooking education, with the ability to hold classes in a hall, classroom, or even in the garden.

Teachers, parents and community members have just three weeks to nominate a school to win The Kitchen Kart, with the winning entrant also receiving $1,000 to go towards keeping their own family healthy and active.

The Kitchen Kart competition will give one lucky school the opportunity to win a fantastic asset to help turn this learning into valuable real-life experiences.

Nestlé Market Nutritionist, Megan Darragh, said that when kids are

eating vegetables, they are most likely having them at dinner; but there are lots of opportunities for kids to be eating vegetables at lunch and as snacks throughout the day.

“Every child is different and finding out what vegetables kids do and don’t like is an ongoing process.

Talking to kids about vegetables, trialling them in different ways, such as grating veggies into spaghetti Bolognese or savoury muffins and getting kids involved in the kitchen can be a great way to familiarise children with new vegetables, or ones they don’t usually like to eat,” Ms Darragh said.

Winner of the 2016 Nestlé Healthy Active Kids The Kitchen Kart competition, St Mary Mackillop Primary has put The Kitchen Kart to good use in the classroom and in the playground.

St Mary Mackillop Primary, year one teacher, Nicole Jones said: “Previously the school just had a sink and microwave. Now that we have The Kitchen Kart, we have the means to bring

nutrition education to life “Teachers love The Kitchen Kart as it complements nutrition programs, while students are enjoying the practical handson cooking; they are more engaged when they can roll up their sleeves and get stuck in.

“It’s really rewarding to see kids replicating the healthy snacks we’ve made in class at home and bringing them in for lunch and recess,” Ms Jones said.

Nestlé Oceania Head of Wellness, Katrina Koutoulas, said, “The Kitchen Kart competition, provides a very unique opportunity for students to put what they learn in class into practice.

“The Nestlé Healthy Active Kids program also has free, curriculumbased lesson plans ready for teachers to use in the classroom, with, or without access to a teaching kitchen at school,” Ms Koutoulas said.

Cadets Head Out In Orange

THE ‘Orange Army’ was out in force last week, as the next generation of volunteers got a taste of the work done by the State Emergency Service (SES).

The young cadets navigated land searches, took part in mock retrievals and practiced hauling techniques during the week-long training course held at Bulahdelah Central School.

The program also included a visit to the Taree Emergency Precinct where the cadets toured the facility, tried the equipment and inspected rescue vehicles.

Year 10 student, Kya Morrison, said she gained the skills and confidence needed to be able to

Taking to the waters in flood boats for river rescues and jacking and packing will give the cadets a real feel for being an SES volunteer.

Regional Cadet Coordinator, Garry Fajks, said the course is about developing community resilience and developing life

skills along the way.

“The cadets learn valuable teamwork and leadership skills that they can use in their everyday lives,” he said.

“The activity-based sessions, both inside and outside the classroom, also helps to improve their own safety and their response to an emergency.”

The SES Cadet Program has been running since 2008 and more than 3000 of the region’s students have taken part over the years.

New name for Aged Care service

A COMMUNITY celebration was held last week to formally acknowledge the joining of Great Lakes Aged Care and Anglican Care.

The special event was held at Bulahdelah Bowling Club and also provided the

opportunity to officially announce the home’s new name, Cedar Wharf Lodge.

Anglican Care Chairman, John Kilpatrick, said the name honours the early history of the area and the community members who made the home a reality.

“This is a nice way to

recognise the community, especially in regard to the first manager, Lindsay Ireland,” he said.

Local history shows Cedar Wharf on the Myall River was once used as a collection point for timber logged in the area.

“We see taking on the nursing home as a privilege because we know how much blood, sweat and tears from the community went into it,” Mr Kilpatrick said.

“There is so much community ownership, and we want to look after this facility that has looked after

the community for so long.”

Great Lakes Aged Care Chairman, John Ireland, paid tribute to the many people who have served on the board.

“They have done a tremendous job over the years and it is only through all of those efforts that we can take this next step forward,” he said.

“I believe joining with Anglican Care will give the nursing home a far more secure future long into the years to come.”

Anglican Care is one of the largest providers of community and aged care services in NSW.

When my sister went to Newcastle University in the 1970’s, Shortland was famous, more properly infamous, for one thing. Its mosquitoes.

If you think this is hyperbole, next time you are heading to Newcastle take a look at the picture of Ozzie the Mozzie outside the Hexham Bowling Club.

Fortunately the thirty plus walkers visited on a magnificent winter’s day, so not a mosquito in sight.

Included in the environmentally significant variety of flora and fauna are

217 bird species.

On our walk along the paths and boardwalk we delighted in seeing a family of swans, egrets as well as many duck species.

Hunter Wetlands Centre is also an important site for the conservation of two threatened species, the Magpie Goose and Freckled Duck.

Walking through this special area it is hard to imagine that prior to 1985 this was sporting fields containing a remnant rainforest in very poor condition, full of lantana and other invasive weed species.

Thanks to the vision of a core of conservationists, the hard

work of many volunteers and the financial support of visitors and many others the remnant rainforest has now increased to approximately one hectare.

Another vague childhood memory I have is of discussion taking place in the local paper about what could be done with the mangrove swamp at Hexham/Shortland.

Fortunately we live in more enlightened times where the ecological value and necessity of these areas is widely understood.

Although to paraphrase a famous statement, the price of conservation is eternal vigilance.

Serena told News Of The Area, “I’ve been based at Hof Börnsen since December 2015 and I am now pursuing my dream of becoming a professional rider and an international dressage competitor for Australia.”

“I’ve had the opportunity to compete this season with two incredible horses, Dauphin’s Dream and Franklyn 11, and it has been a very successful season so far, including winning in Vierlanden

which was only my third competition with Dauphin’s Dream,” she said.

“My goal is to continue competing this season and consolidating my training in order to be able to qualify for the Future Champions event next year, which is a major international competition for young riders held each year in Germany where I hope to represent Australia.”

Serena is living proof that although it takes a lot of bravery to follow your dreams, the outcome can be wonderful.

Get Shucked

THE Farmers Of The Sea event at d’Albora Marinas last weekend showcased the Port Stephens Oyster Industry as a part of the Love Seafood festival.

Minister for the Hunter Scot MacDonald, and Councillor John Nell participated with others in the celebrity Oyster Shucking competition.

There was plenty of fun and some great prizes for the amateur shucking and the local industry professional oyster shuckers also competed against each other and the clock.

The winners of the shucking competitions were Dean Cole of Cole Bros Oysters in the professional category and John Ridgeway in the Amateur

Category.

The winners were presented with their awards by Minister for the Hunter Scot MacDonald.

There was plenty of interest at the various information sessions including the sex life of oysters.

Port Stephens is home to four oyster growing regions, Karuah, Tea Gardens, Tilligerry and Oyster Cove, producing the world famous Sydney Rock Oyster as well as large Pacific Oysters and the Flat Oyster which is endemic to the region.

IT was a great day out in Karuah last Saturday especially if you were playing or supporting the Karuah Roos Rugby League side.

Thursday 10th August: Finally, enough bowlers present on a Thursday for a game.

Format for play was a game of Triples and a game of pairs. On Rink 3 Ingrid Luck, Bev Rhodes and Maynie Roberts v Lynda Richards, Jo Younghusband and Loretta Baker.

This was a very evenly matched event, right to the last delivery.

The winners were Loretta’s team 15 v Maynie’s side 14.

The Pairs game was also very close with Sheril Johnson and Carol Hayden winning by 2 shots over Margaret Smith and Karen Green.

The winners on the day with the lowest margin were Lynda Richards, Jo Younghusband and Loretta Baker.

Congratulations to our team of Fours that participated in the Soldiers Point Blue Water Carnival held on the 7th, 9th and 11th August.

By all accounts this was a very well run bowling competition with some strong teams vying for the prize money.

Our ladies played 8 games, winning 6 of these scoring 12 points for the wins plus 34 margin.

This score put them in 6th position out of a field of 42 teams.

The team consisted of Lead: Vicki Rankin, Second: Lynne Green, Third: Lorraine Harvey played Monday and Friday and Dale Winter played Wednesday and finally Skip: Kayelene Pearson.

Last Home Game For Season Karuah Roos Rugby League

SATURDAY was the last Home for the 2017 season for the Karuah Roos and what a fantastic day it was. Game day sponsor was the Morten Family, the Roos took on Maitland United.

The Roos kicked off and under 5mins Mitch Napier was held up over the line.

But it was only a few more minutes later and Mitch O’Bryan was in with Captain Sam Croese converting, the opening score was 6/0. Then Maitland countered with a

converted try to equal the score 6 all.

The Roos big hitters in the first half were Matt Feeney, Adam Crampton, Mitch Napier, Justin Anderson, Tim Higginbottom, Kane Chishlome, Mitch O’Bryan, Darren Weatherall, Jack Croese, Ben Feeney, Matt O’Connor, Nathan Ritzau and Ashley Voll.

Twenty five minutes into the first half Ben Smith was held up over the line but he wasn’t going to give up because the next set he was over and there was no stopping him and with Sam converting the score was

12/6. Maitland once again countered by scoring and converting to equal the score at 12 all.

The Meter men for the Roos were Mitch Napier, Tim Higginbottom, Justin Anderson, Jack Croese, Matt O’Connor, Mitch O’Bryan, Ben Feeney, Matt Feeney, Alex Simon, Adam Crampton, Kane Chisholme and Jake Blanch.

Just before half time the Roos were over with Adam Crampton scoring and Sam Croese converting for the half time score to be Karuah 18 Maitland United 12.

Wild Dog Control 1080 Baiting The NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service (NPWS) will be undertaking 1080 ground baiting for wild dog control within Myall Lakes National Park and Ghin-doo-ee National Parks.

This baiting program is being carried out as part of a broader cooperative control program coordinated by the Hunter Local Land Services to mitigate the impacts of wild dogs on stock and wildlife. Cooperative partners include LLS, Forestry Corp, MidCoast Council and the Bulahdelah & District Wild Dog Group.

Voting by Post You can apply online for a postal vote from www.votensw.info or by calling 1300 135 736. Your application must be completed and received by the NSW Electoral Commission no later than 5pm Monday, 4th September 2017.

Domestic pets are not permitted in Nature Reserves, National Parks or State Conservation Areas. Neighbours and reserve users are reminded that 1080 baits are lethal to domestic pets. We suggest that pets and working dogs be restrained to ensure that they do not enter the baiting location during poisoning operations or to muzzle dogs if they are required to work the baiting location during and after poisoning. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

No baits will be placed within 500 metres of residences. All areas will have 1080 baiting signs erected at access points to where baiting is being undertaken.
