Last week saw Medowie schools acknowledge the seventh National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence on March 17 and News Of The Area spoke with local students about one special program for young people.

‘You Can Sit With Me’ is an anti-bullying campaign and kindness initiative.

She decided there and then to join in as a tribute to the memory of her son Tui who was taken by cancer at the age of just 22.

Marilyn herself is a survivor of ovarian cancer and lost her hair as part of a chemotherapy program which saved her life.

“There must be a cure out there and we need to support the researchers as much as we can,” she said.

“I’d like to give heartfelt thanks to my sponsors and in particular Vanessa from ‘Hair on the Move’ for volunteering to get on the business end of the clippers,” she said.

REAL Estate agent Tiffany Jeffery has a philanthropic spirit, and a love of supporting quality education in our schools.

Tiffany, an agent for Century 21 Curtis & Blair, gets a kick from selling houses,

but wanted to add an extra element of enjoyment to her work.

Towards the end of 2016, Tiffany announced that for any person who listed and sold with her before the new year, she would donate $250 of her personal commission to Wirreanda P&C. Initially planned as a trial to see if it gained any interest, Tiffany was delighted to have

four vendors request to be a part of her offer.

Tiffany recently presented a cheque for $1,000 to Wirreanda P&C, as a result of four quick sales for the vendors who took her up on her generous offer.

Tiffany told News Of The Area, “From an early age, I was always part of fundraising and community events.”

“This was just another extension of that.”

“I don’t see any point in being successful if you don’t give back to your community and those who help you build your career,” she said.

Wirreanda Public School student Adryane Montgomery told News Of The Area, “We should all have them so if someone is

The Wirreanda Public School ‘friendship seat’ is worthy of special mention.

A bench has been painted bright colours and sits in the playground.

It is well known by all students as somewhere they can sit if they need someone to talk to or play with.

Other students can then approach the child on the bench and invite them to play.

report that the bench has been a wonderful addition, and that all students are active in ensuring children who sit on the bench don’t stay there long before being invited to play.

Irrawang High School student Attila WorleyMcGrath told News Of The Area, “I’d like all kids to feel strong enough to speak up.”

wonder that many Port Stephens locals are feeling less than enthusiastic about the voluntary merger with Dungog that has now been put on the table.

DAVID Hoyle is excited. The sports fisherman from the Koala Bay Estate at Tanilba has just nailed a very large flathead.

“I knew I had something big on the moment it hit my lure,” he said.

“My fishing buddies reeled in to give me space and one grabbed the landing net.”

David described how he got it near the surface twice but it took off on two long hard runs against the set drag of his reel.

“It circled the boat and I actually started to shake when its mouth broached the surface.”

“My buddy could hardly

fit it in the net and I was somewhat overwhelmed to see it floundering in the bottom of the boat,” he said.

“We are strictly ‘catch and release’ with big female flathead and I watched on in awe as it slowly glided beneath the surface.”

David and his friends started out their day’s fishing spinning for flathead around Snapper Island.

With nothing to show for their efforts, they headed for Oyster Cove where they hit the jackpot.

Apart from flathead, their hard bodied diving lures nailed bream up to 40cm (1.6 kg).

The big one in the framed photo measured 76cm and

feels that it is a lack of facts and information being shown to Port Stephens residents that is getting in the way of locals seeing the positives of this potential Country to Coast merger.

Lisa met with News Of The Area and shared her thoughts,

medowie@newsofthearea.com.au saying, ‘There are so many roles and responsibilities that used to be Government functions, which now fall on the councils.”

“Small councils like Dungog struggle to keep up, yet would be able to make vital contributions to bigger councils like Port Stephens if they were to join as one.”

“Departments and positions that small councils can’t possibly keep afloat would be much better supported in larger councils where it makes sense for those departments to be in place for a larger body of people, with two councils of support working together,” she said.

A major criticism of the proposed merger has been how long a newly merged council, each entering with their own concerns and problems, would take to be a functioning team.

Reports suggest a seamless functioning merged council may take upwards of ten years, but Lisa Connors argues that those years of ‘ironing out’ would be worth it and that those opposing the merger are perhaps not armed with all the facts about the offer on the table.

Lisa said “Dungog’s offer from Port Stephens is conditional, with no rate

freeze, an immediate or rapid movement towards rate parity, and the government putting in at least $15 million to the merger.”

“The benefit to both councils is that we would become a long term sustainable council, and we would be making the choice for ourselves before it’s made for us down the track in another silly State Government-led plan.”

“Dungog was a tourism hotspot with dairy and timber industries, and we can be again, but we can’t do it alone when we’re this small,” she said.

With the flourishing tourism industry in Port Stephens, it is entirely possibly that we could make the lifestyles of ‘Beach and Country’ work well together.

The Gold Coast and Hinterlands have developed a wonderful tourism relationship for those wanting getaways from the coast, so the same could be said for Port Stephens and Dungog tourism working together to offer the ‘best of all worlds’ to tourists to travel between Port Stephens and the Barringtons for different experiences.

Port Stephens and Dungog could be the Surf and Turf of New South Wales.

State Awards for Irrawang Scholars

By Rachael VAUGHAN IN a wonderful nod to the high quality of secondary Public Education on offer for our young people, a group of Irrawang students and their teacher have taken out state awards at a distinguished awards ceremony as the only comprehensive state school in New South Wales to win a place at the 2016 Arthur Phillip Fieldwork Awards ceremony.

Two Irrawang Year 10 groups took out first and second place in the Dr Maurine Goldston-Morris Civic and Citizenship Award.

The first placed group was Jessie Dennett, Phebe Farrawell, Dakota Gordon and Mitchell, with a synopsis of: Sustainable school project.

Their proposal was to install a water tank at Irrawang High School.

The group applied to the P&C for funding to complete the project and were further supported by Hunter Irrigation and Water Supplies at Raymond Terrace, who donated three 556l tanks.

Caitlin Ping, Year 7, took out first place in the Global Education, Fieldwork and Research Stage 4 competition, with a Synopsis: Olympic National Park in USA and its classification as a biosphere reserve and world heritage site.

Teacher Mrs Catherine Donnelly also took out an award, winning the Dr Maurice Goldston-Morris Teacher Award.

School representative Lue Fagan told News Of The Area, “We are so proud of these students for their hard work and commitment to their projects.”

The Garden Club regularly holds these sales to align with spring and autumn, to give locals the perfect opportunity to gather seasonally appropriate plants.

The plants have been grown by members and are suitable for Medowie and surrounding areas.

Members of the gardening club will also be on hand to answer any questions you may have about your plants and gardens, and can offer tried and true techniques and tips for improving your garden.

Medowie Garden Club member Ann Tomlinson told News Of The Area, “Previous plant sales have

been very successful, even the sale in October 2016 for spring, where the weather was somewhat inclement.”

“The plants were well watered and one member was ecstatic with the weather, which was providing much need watering of everyone’s gardens, and showed his excitement, as pictured in the photograph.”

The proceeds from the plant sales are used to benefit members, by subsidising Club activities, such as outings to places of interest to the avid gardeners.

The Medowie Garden Club holds meetings on the first Saturday of each month, with the exception of January.

Gardeners and residents of Medowie are always welcome to attend.

The meetings are held at alternating members’ residences each month, who take turns hosting the Club and giving advice from their own gardens with tips and solutions that have helped

She kick-started a ukulele group and it has gone from strength to strength.

“We were all beginners who helped one another along the way and three years down the track we have built up our self confidence to the extent that we give public performances,” she said.

“The added bonus of getting involved in a community group is that you

create a sense of community by ‘putting something back’.

Social interaction is very important for most people.”

“It leaves loneliness and boredom behind in its wake,” Jenny said.

The ukulele group meets twice weekly at the ‘Habitat’ on a Thursday and Saturday between 10am and 12 noon.

Dogs Get Lonely Too What could be more sweeter for dogs than a walk in the park or a rub on their belly

HAVE you ever been by yourself for a long time?

Nobody to talk to, you don’t have a car and your mobile phone doesn’t work.

Gets very very lonely, doesn’t it.

This happens to dogs as well.

Left in the backyard all day with their owners at work and bored, they can howl, bark and over-react to the slightest noise.

Apart from obedience training, a local dog group offers up companionship and interaction for our four footed furry friends.

They’ve been going for some 14 years and their owners also get social contact with others who share a similar interest.

The dogs get together at 8am of a Saturday at their venue beside the Anglican church in Strathmore Rd.

Owner and manager Cassie Beer told News Of The Area, “Our valued clients deserve the best products, services and environment, but after nine years, its age has started to show.”

“The changes are also to help our growing staff and clientele base because

If you want to join you are most welcome, but new pooches and their parental partners must only come initially on the first Saturday of each month.

Compatibility is the name of the game and newcomers will be assessed to see if they fit in with the other pampered pooches. Most do.

Spokesperson Fay Boyd said that the group also promoted responsible ownership and had invited a representative of PSSC to update members on council regulations governing both rights and responsibilities of dog owners.

“We have lobbied council over the years to have reserves set aside for ‘on lead’ and ‘off lead’ exercise,” Fay said.

“We are very careful to maintain our good name and encourage all dog owners to abide by the rules.”

“Designated areas are clearly marked and we ask all dog owners to read the signposts and comply with the regulations.”

only having just completed year 12 in 2016 and still having the bulk of his career ahead of him.

After performing well at the trials for the Australian Youth Sailing team, Lachlan was invited to do some training with the Australian Sailing Team just prior to the Rio Olympics.

After Rio, Lachlan was invited back to participate in the Pathway to Gold Program.

As a direct result of his performance in the gruelling program, he was selected as a member of Australian Sailing’s Nacra 17 Training Squad.

Following this selection, Lachlan partnered up with a friend from Melbourne and competed in the Viper World Championships at the start of this year.

The pair were in contention for a podium

finish until Lachlan was injured in an accident due to equipment failure.

He was whipped in the eye, and was taken to a local hospital with a blunt force trauma.

It took nearly a month for his sight to return properly.

Even though they missed the last two days of racing, Lachlan and Tayla still held onto fourth position overall and became the Viper World Youth Champions.

The pair are now aiming to make it to an Olympic Games in the newly established Nacra 17 mixed division.

Lachlan told News Of The Area, “I have such a deep passion for the sport, as there are so many avenues to explore and so much to learn; it is very physically demanding but at the same time psychologically draining.

“I think that is why it is so easy for me to have a continuous passion for the sport as there is always something to learn and there is always progress to be made.”

The annual game is played in memory of club life member Graham “Herbie” Gallagher, who passed away in 2001.

This year, that round will have an extra twist to

honour all fallen team mates from the club, and with the wishes of Herbie’s family, will now be known as the Memorial Round.

Important Public Notice Wild Dog and Fox Control The NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service (NPWS) in cooperation with the Bulahdelah and District Wild Dog Control Group, NSW Forestry Corp, MidCoast Council and the Hunter Local Land Services will be undertaking an annual 1080 wild dog/fox baiting and trapping program within Myall Lakes and Ghin-doo-ee National Park. The control program will use a combination of 1080 ejectors and trapping methods.

The 1080 program will take place from Friday 20 March 2017 to Monday 1 May 2017.

The use of 1080 ejector baits and trapping techniques are being conducted as part of a broader dog and fox control program, to lessen the potential impacts on neighbouring property and biodiversity values.

Warning signs will be erected on the main access tracks where the baiting is undertaken.

All neighbours and people using the parks are reminded domestics pets are not permitted in National Parks.

By Rachael VAUGHAN AFTER a 20 year break from the sport of sailing, Lachlan White’s father purchased a boat, and decided it was time to show his son what it was all about.

It didn’t take any persuading before Lachlan was hooked on the sport that would become his passion.

The father and son pair sailed for three or four seasons together, even taking out a National title together.

Lachlan told News Of The Area, “It was a great experience learning such a unique skill from my dad and I love the fact that the knowledge he provided me has opened up so many doors for my sporting career.”
