RACE

From Page 1 I mean a few inches,” said Canadian Director Bernie Daynes. “He lost the second heat by .0056 of a second, so close. What an experience,” Isaac’s mom Kim Bucknall, said last week, rounding him up from chores around the family’s Campden farm to talk about his experience as an international racing star. A little self-conscious with all the attention, Isaac admitted he was a bit nervous for the big race but he has some good advice he wants to share with competitors for this weekend’s derby. “Stay very cool, quiet hands, straight line and tuck,” Isaac said he was told by “a very wise man,” Gord Gerrie, Lincoln Soap Box Derby Chairman. Another great tip he picked up on the circuit wear beach water shoes or water socks. They’re not clunky like runners and are easier to maneuver inside the tight space of the race car. Isaac met champions from around the globe July 15-21 at the world famous Derby Downs track in Akron. “The Lions and his sponsor George, a chartered accountant in Beamsville, helped with the costs and the Lions delivered the car two weeks prior to the big race,” Kim said. A week prior, it had to be inspected by All-American officials. “Our car earned a VIP,” meaning it was in tip top shape and ready to go. The criteria is tough. One wrong washer and the car has to be adjusted. Race week, the Akron city core shut right down for a parade of all the champions through the downtown streets. There were more than

400 kids ready to test their mettle on the race track. “Everybody is a champ and the volunteers were amazing,” said Kim. It was the best family vacation. “Isaac didn’t feel the pressure. His main concern was swimming at the hotel.” He cruised through a number of trials, winning his first heat in the challenge race and in the second heat, losing by .0056 of a second. Final race day, he finished third in the trial to set the lineup and then 8th in the fifth and final heat. A police escort led the top nine, riding in golf carts, past thousands of cheering spectators. Isaac also earned third place in the Build and Battle competition, building a car in two hours and racing it. Since last summer and Isaac’s win in the Lincoln derby, Daynes had kept the family in the loop with upcoming rallies to give Isaac more exposure. First stop was Greece, New York where Isaac did great placing fourth. “The only way to get the car there was to dismantle it and put it in the back of the vehicle,” Kim said. They arrived to find other competitors with pre-assembled cars transported in car haulers. There was some great good-spirited fun made of the Canadians, “but Isaac kept winning and beating them,” Kim said. And then it was on to Jamestown, New York, where they started calling Isaac “The Canadian Force.” He earned two first-place trophies. The journey began last summer when the Lions contacted Kim and Rob to invite their son Wyatt to enter the race. But Wyatt had dislocated his elbow and with the age cap at 13 years, he would’ve aged out by

the race date. So Isaac was put in the driver’s seat. “I squeezed into the car, it was a tight fit and they told me to tuck down to increase your speed. I tried that and it went faster,” Isaac said of his win at the inaugural Lincoln derby. Isaac is looking forward to Saturday’s derby and at the end of the day says Kim, “world champion or not, he has to remain humble and he still has to do his chores.” The Lincoln derby is a sanctioned event and

licensed to host a Canadian-All American Soap Box Derby Local Championship. This Saturday, Aug. 11, the format will run three divisions of races including the Stock Division, 7-13 years, with 16 sponsored cars; Little Rascals, 7-13, with 12 cars; and the Super Kids division for children with special needs with six ready to race. The action starts at 9 a.m. at Great Lakes Christian High School in Beamsville.

Isaac Bucknall, 11, Campden, poses during the Build and Battle challenge in Akron where he built a car from scratch and raced it down the track, winning 3rd place against 16 other drivers.
