NOTABLE PERSONS OF INFORMATON TECHNOLOGY FIELD: Charles Babbage, FRS (26 December 1791 – 18 October 1871) was an English polymath. He was a mathematician, philosopher, inventor and mechanical engineer, who is best remembered now for originating the concept of a programmable computer. Considered a “Father of the Computer”,Babbage is credited with inventing the first mechanical computer that eventually led to more complex designs. His varied work in other fields has led him to be described as “pre-eminent” among the many polymaths of his century. In 1991, a perfectly functioning difference engine was constructed from Babbage’s original plans. Built to tolerances achievable in the 19th century, the success of the finished engine indicated that Babbage’s machine would have worked. George Boole (2 November 1815 – 8 December 1864) was an English mathematician, philosopher and logician. He worked in the fields of differential equations and algebraic logic, and is now best known as the Author of The Laws of Thought. As the inventor of the prototype of what is now called Boolean logic, which became the basis of the modern digital computer, Boole is regarded in hindsight as a founder of the field of computer science. Boole said, “no general method for the solution of questions in the theory of probabilities can be established which does not explicitly recognise ... those universal laws of thought which are the basis of all reasoning.”

Alan Mathison Turing, OBE, FRS ( 23 June 1912 – 7 June 1954) was a British mathematician, logician, cryptanalyst, computer scientist and philosopher. He was highly influential in the development of computer science, giving a formalisation of the concepts of “algorithm” and “computation” with the Turing machine, which can be considered a model of a general purpose computer.Turing is widely considered to be the Father of theoretical Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence. During World War II, Turing worked for the Government Code and Cypher School (GC&CS) at Bletchley Park, Britain’s codebreaking centre. After the war, he worked at the National Physical Laboratory, where he designed the ACE, among the first designs for a Stored-Program Computer.

Dennis MacAlistair Ritchie (September 9, 1941 – c. October 12, 2011) was an American computer scientist who “helped shape the digital era”. His father was Alistair E. Ritchie, a longtime Bell Labs scientist and co-author of The Design of Switching Circuits on switching circuit theory. He created the C programming language and, with long-time colleague Ken Thompson, the Unix operating system. Ritchie and Thompson received the Turing Award from the ACM in 1983, the Hamming Medal from the IEEE in 1990 and the National Medal of Technology from President Clinton in 1999. Ritchie was the Head of Lucent Technologies System Software Research Department when he retired in 2007. He was the “R” in K&R C and commonly known by his username dmr. Steven Paul “Steve” Jobs (February 24, 1955 – October 5, 2011) was an American entrepreneur, marketer, and inventor, who was the Co-founder, Chairman, and CEO of Apple Inc.He is widely recognized as a Charismatic Pioneer of the Personal Computer Revolution and for his influential career in the computer and consumer electronics fields, transforming “one industry after another, from computers and smartphones to music and movies”. Jobs also Co-founded and served as Chief Executive of Pixar Animation Studios; he became a Member of the Board of Directors of The Walt Disney Company in 2006, when Disney acquired Pixar. Jobs was among the first to see the commercial potential of Xerox PARC’s mouse-driven graphical user interface, which led to the creation of the Apple Lisa and, a year later, the Macintosh. He also played a role in introducing the LaserWriter, one of the first widely available laser printers, to the market. Edgar Frank “Ted” Codd (August 19, 1923 – April 18, 2003) was an English computer scientist who, while working for IBM, invented the relational model for database management, the theoretical basis for relational databases. He made other valuable contributions to computer science, but the relational model, a very influential general theory of data management, remains his most mentioned achievement. Codd received the Turing Award in 1981 and in 1994 he was inducted as a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery. Even so, SEQUEL was so superior to prerelational systems that it was copied, in 1979, based on pre-launch papers presented at conferences, by Larry Ellison, of Relational software Inc, in his Oracle Database, which actually reached market before SQL/DS — because of the then-already proprietary status of the original name, had been renamed SQL.

John Warner Backus (December 3, 1924 – March 17, 2007) was an American computer scientist. He directed the team that invented the first widely used high-level programming language (FORTRAN) and was the inventor of the Backus-Naur form (BNF), a widely used notation to define formal language syntax. He also did research in function-level programming and helped to popularize it. The IEEE awarded Backus the W.W. McDowell Award in 1967 for the development of FORTRAN. He received the National Medal of Science in 1975, and the 1977 ACM Turing Award “for profound, influential, and contributions to the design of practical high-level programming systems, notably through his work on FORTRAN, and for formal procedures publication for the of programming languages. Bjarne Stroustrup born (30 December 1950) is a Danish computer scientist, most notable for the creation and development of the widely used C++ programming language. He is a Distinguished Research Professor and holds the College of Engineering Chair in Computer Science at Texas A&M University, a visiting professor at Columbia University, and works at Morgan Stanley. Stroustrup began developing C++ in 1978 (then called “C with Classes”), and, in his own words, “invented C++, wrote its early definitions, and produced its first implementation... chose and formulated the design criteria for C++, designed all its major facilities, and was responsible for the processing of extension proposals in the C++ standards committee Stroustrup was the head of AT&T Lab’s Large-scale Programming Research department, from its creation until late 2002. Kenneth Thompson (born February 4, 1943), commonly referred to as ken in hacker circles, is an American pioneer of computer science. Having worked at Bell Labs for most of his career, Thompson designed and implemented the original Unix operating system. He also invented the B programming language, the direct predecessor to the C programming language, and was one of the creators and early developers of the Plan 9 operating systems. Since 2006, Thompson works at Google, where he coinvented the Go programming language. Other notable contributions included his work on regular expressions and early computer text editors QED and ed, the definition of the UTF-8 encoding, his work on computer chess that included creation of endgame tablebases and the chess machine Belle.

PERSPECTIVE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY ACADEMIC PERSPECTIVE: In an academic context, the Association for Computing Machinery defines IT as “undergraduate degree programs that prepare students to meet the computer technology needs of business, government, healthcare, schools, and other kinds of organizations .... IT specialists assume responsibility for selecting hardware and software products appropriate for an organization, integrating those products with organizational needs and infrastructure, and installing, customizing, and maintaining those applications for the organization’s computer users”.

COMMERCIAL AND EMPLOYMENT PERSPECTIVE: In a business context, the Information Technology Association of America has defined information technology as “the study, design, development, application, implementation, support or management of computer-based information systems”. The responsibilities of those working in the field include network administration, software development and installation, and the planning and management of an organization’s technology life cycle, by which hardware and software are maintained, upgraded and replaced. The business value of information technology lies in the automation of business processes, provision of information for decision making, connecting businesses with their customers, and the provision of productivity tools to increase efficiency.

ETHICAL PERSPECTIVE: The field of information ethics was established by mathematician Norbert Wiener in the 1940s. Some of the ethical issues associated with the use of information technology include: •Breaches of copyright by those downloading files stored without the permission of the copyright holders •Employers monitoring their employees’ emails and other Internet usage •Unsolicited emails •Hackers accessing online databases •Web sites installing cookies or spyware to monitor a user’s online activities

QUALITIES OF GOOD AND PROFESSIONAL IT’ian: A good Computer Professionals must possess certain attributes to thrive in IT listed as follows:

•See the Big Picture •Be Adaptable •Work Collaboratively •Communicate Well •Solve Problems and Troubleshoot •Research •Multitask

NOTABLE PERSONS OF INFORMATON TECHNOLOGY FIELD: Andrew Stephen (“Andy”) Grove (born 2 September 1936), is a Hungarian-born American businessman, engineer, and author. He is a science pioneer in the semiconductor industry. He escaped from Communist-controlled Hungary at the age of 20 and moved to the United States where he finished his education. He later became CEO of Intel Corporation and helped transform the company into the world’s largest manufacturer of semiconductors. As a result of his work at Intel, and from his books and professional articles, He has been called the “guy who drove the growth phase” of Silicon Valley. Steve Jobs, when he was considering returning to be Apple’s CEO, called Grove. One source notes that by his accomplishments at Intel alone.

James Arthur Gosling, OC (born May 19, 1955) is a Canadian computer scientist, best known as the Father of the Java Programming Language. Gosling is generally credited with having invented the Java programming language in 1994.He created the original design of Java and implemented the language’s original compiler and virtual machine. Gosling traces the origins of the approach to his early 19s graduate-student days, when he created a pseudo-code (p-code) virtual machine for the lab’s DEC VAX computer, so that his professor could run programs written in UCSD Pascal. Pascal compiled into p-code to foster precisely this kind of portability. In the work leading to Java at Sun, he saw that architecture-neutral execution for widely distributed programs could be achieved by implementing a similar philosophy: always program for the same virtual machine”.

Rasmus Lerdorf (born 22 November 1968) is a Greenlandic programmer with Canadian citizenship. He created the PHP scripting language, authoring the first two versions of the language and participating in the development of later versions led by a group of developers including Jim Winstead (who later created blogs), Stig Bakken, Shane Caraveo, Andi Gutmans and Zeev Suraski. He continues to contribute to the project. From September 2002 to November 2009 he was employed by Yahoo! Inc. as an Infrastructure Architecture Engineer. On 22 February 2012 he announced on Twitter that he had joined Etsy. In July, 2013 Rasmus joined Jelastic as a senior advisor to help them with the creation of new technology.Lerdorf is a frequent speaker at Open Source conferences around the world.

Linus Benedict Torvalds born December 28, 1969 is a Finnish American software engineer, who was the principal force behind the development of the Linux kernel. He later became the Chief Architect of the Linux kernel, and now acts as the Project’s Coordinator. He was honored, along with Shinya Yamanaka, with the 2012 Millennium Technology Prize by the Technology Academy Finland “in recognition of his creation of a new open source operating system for computers leading to the widely used Linux kernel”.Initially, Torvalds wanted to call the kernel he developed Freax (a combination of “free”, “freak”, and the letter X to indicate that it is a Unix-like system), but his friend Ari Lemmke, who administered the FTP server where the kernel was first hosted for download, named Torvalds’ directory linux. As March 2011, Torvalds has been granted 35 patents worldwide. Richard Matthew Stallman born March 16, 1953, often known by his initials, RMS,is an American software freedom activist and computer programmer. He campaigns for software to be distributed in a manner, such that a user receiving it, lsoftware that ensures these freedoms is termed free software. He is best known for launching the GNU Project, founding the Free Software Foundation, developing the GNU Compiler Collection and GNU Emacs, and writing the GNU General Public License. Stallman launched the GNU Project in September 1983 to create a Unix-like computer operating system composed entirely of free software. With this, he also launched the free software movement. He has received fourteen honorary doctorates and professorships for this work.

COMBIMOUSE MAKES TYPING MORE COMFORTABLE

The left part is stationary and provides the function of

the left hand side of a conventional QWERTY keyboard. The right part has a similar mass, centre of gravity and moment of innertia to a conventional mouse. The right part is a mobile combination keyboard and mouse that can be moved around on a support surface like a conventional mouse. The keys are arranged in the fashion of the right hand side of a conventional QWERTY keyboard.

By default the right part operates in keyboard mode. When the user grips the right part and so touches the side of the part in the area labeled above as ‘Contact switch’, the right part automatically changes to mouse mode. When in this mode, movement of the right part enables cursor movement on the screen and as described below the keys become mouse click buttons and take on the functions labeled in green text - Aishwarya V. ARTICLES GOOGLE ANNOUNCES NEAR-PERFECT REALTIME SPEECH TRANSLATION SYSTEM

GOOGLE has announced its prototype real-time speech translation systems are performing with “close to 100% accuracy” in laboratory conditions. However the web giant has given no indication as to when a finished product will become a reality. Google Translate, the web and mobile tool for converting text from one language to another, is already indispensable for most business travelers, expats and holidaymakers. The company is developing a real-time translation tool that can do for voice what its current systems can do for text. In an interview with The Times, Android product management vice president Hugo Barra revealed that the current prototypes are achieving “close to 100% accuracy,” and that with some language pairings, the results are “near perfect,” meaning that in laboratory conditions at least (ie. without background noises and over a perfect internet connection), two people speaking two completely different languages can communicate via the system. Earlier this month, Microsoft Asia researchers demonstrated a system that uses the Kinect sensor that can translate sign language in real time and also turn text into visual sign language via an avatar.

PROJECT EIDOS: THE MASK THAT GIVES SUPERHUMAN POWERS I’m pretty sure all of us, at one point of another in our lives, wanted to be superheroes. While gaining superhuman strength and flight capabilities is still problematic, a group of students came up with a solution to give people superhuman sight and hearing. It’s only fitting that the devices designed by Royal College of Art in London students are in the shape of masks that enhance sensory perception. The project is called Eidos and although the prototypes themselves are relatively simple, the technology behind them is quite interesting

The second prototype, designed to enhance the wearer’s sight, is of course worn over the eyes. It operates through a special camera that captures the video and transfers it to a computer. The computer then applies various effects to the video in real time and relays it back to the prototype and the wearer. With this system, you will be able to distinguish movement patterns very clearly, just like you would with the help of long-exposure photographs. In other words, you will be able to see someone’s movement frame by frame. The students behind the project believe Project Eidos can have a broad range of applications in various fields that require audio and video analysis. It could be used by athletes to visualize and improve their technique, or in the arts, to enhance live performances. The technology could also be useful in the medical field, to boost sensory signals in aging or ailing patients. The possibilities are practically limitless, because this technology, if it continues to develop, may mark a new step in human evolution. Just imagine a world in which our senses could be enhanced on command, in real time, and how we would experience everything around us through superhuman powers of hearing, sight, or touch.
